Johnson, who had been repped by WME, stars alongside Sean Penn in Daddio, which she produced through TeaTime. Christy Hall wrote and directed the drama, which premiered at Telluride and Toronto. Sony Pictures Classics acquired it, and will release in 2024. Johnson drew raves for Daddio, which is just her and Penn in a yellow cab from JFK to Manhattan, two strangers who briefly get to know each other and the problems each faces. The dialogue is razor sharp and Penn turns in one of his best performances in years. Johnson is right there with him the whole way.
Johnson will next be seen playing the title character in Madame Web, based on the Marvel superhero character for Sony. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, the film is slated for a big theatrical release in February.

“The Wedding Ringer” star Josh Gad is being eyed to play Roger Ebert opposite Will Ferrell in the fact-based indie movie “Russ & Roger Go Beyond,” producer David Permut told Hollywood-Elsewhere on Sunday.
Gad has not inked a deal and hasn’t even read the script yet, an individual familiar with the project told TheWrap, but he is the producers’ top choice to play Ebert and the chance to work with Ferrell is an enticing opportunity for any rising comic actor.

ABC Family has the male lead for its tennis-themed drama pilot, which Jay Karas has come on board to direct. English actor Alex Roe’s first stateside role will be as a once-in-a-generation phenom in Unstrung, which is set on the pro tennis tour where brother and sister Luke (Roe) and Ellie Holt (Chanel Celaya) compete to move up the ranks. The Holts seem to have it all, but when Luke discovers that his well-meaning but controlling father and coach has kept a potentially life-altering secret from him, Luke’s world is upended. Former Disney star and recording artist Selena Gomez has exited as a client of CAA and has signed with Wme. The 21-year-old singer and ex-Wizards of Waverly Place actress has also signed with Brillstein Entertainment Partners as she restructures her team and transitions from teen star to more adult projects. I hear the change has been long in the works as Gomez has taken meetings around town with various management firms. Last year she made a bold leap playing a partying coed in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers. Gomez has a huge social media following, with 57.9M Facebook fans and 19.3M Twitter followers. Exclusive: Mandy Moore is set as the female lead opposite James Roday in CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot Good Session. Written by John Hamburg and Matt Miller and directed by Hamburg, the project revolves around a happy couple, Joel (Roday) and Lindsay (Moore), who go to a therapist (Tracey Ullman) to help them decide if they should have a baby but quickly discover they have more to discuss. Moore’s Lindsay is a driven and hyper-focused business executive who loves her husband but isn’t quite ready to hop off the fast track of her successful career to have kids. Moore, repped by Wme, Untitled and attorney P.J. Shapiro, starred in another CBS pilot last season, drama The Advocates.

The Coach is staying on. Original New Girl co-star Damon Wayans, Jr., who returned to the show for an arc this fall, will continue on the Fox comedy for the rest of the season. He is expected to be in every episode but is billed as a special guest star, leaving him available for pilot (He is executive producing a comedy project at Fox, which he could potentially star in.) Wayans Jr. did the New Girl pilot in second position to his ABC series Happy Endings. But when ABC surprisingly renewed Happy Endings, instead of recasting his role, Coach, New Girl opted to leave him in the pilot and introduce a new character in Episode 2, played by Lamorne Morris. When Wayans Jr. became available following the cancellation of Happy Endings in May, he was invited to come back to New Girl for a four-episode arc, which began airing last night.
