Gugu Sibandze (SAGE) has been in the film industry for the past 23 years, working primarily as a Film and TV editor.
Her favoured genres include drama, documentary and feature film. She has worked on local and international dramas such as Hard Copy, Tsha Tsha, Zero Tolerance, After Nine, and Bay of Plenty, A place called home, 90 Plein Street, The Mating Game, SIRI (Kenya), Intsika, Fallen, Skeem Saam, Dreamworld, Tempy Pushas, End Game, Thola, Soul City 12, Skeem Saam,Uzalo, Isibaya, Ifalakhe, Maskandi Queen (Showmax) and the first African Original for Netflix, Queen Sono.
Documentaries include the films first screened at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, Nabantwa'bam (Project 10), Vuwani, House of Credo Mutwa, Daughter of Spirits, Our Moments, My India in Africa, Democrazy, Parole Camp and Difficult Love - which was screened in Spain, Russia, Belgium and Canada and has gone on to win various awards at different film festivals and was screened at the Tri-Continental Film Festival in South Africa in 2011
In her career, she has been nominated for a SAFTA award for editing in 2019 (Uzalo Editing team), in 2015 (End Game Editing team), in 2006 (Tsha Tsha and Zero Tolerance) and in 2007 (Hard Copy).
In 2015, the edit team she was part of, won a SAFTA award for best achievement in Editing for the show End Game. She has served as vice-chairperson of The South African Guild of Editors from 2007 to 2009 and in 2008 received the SAGE acronym from the Guild, which is given to highly experienced editors to honour their level of professionalism in the industry.
She has also taught editing as part of the MAPPSETA program in 2005 and has continued to teach and lecture on different aspects of editing at various institutions such as Big Fish Academy for Digital Filmmaking, AFDA and Tshwane University of Technology. She has also served as a judge for the 2013/2014 SAFTA awards.
Her passion for training and development has seen many assistants go on to become editors. She is a storyteller first, a music lover and also a partner at Legends Post Production, a vibrant, creative post facility offering end to end post in Johannesburg.
