Cast your mind back to 1997. Britpop’s bubble had yet to burst, the Spice Girls were the biggest band on the planet, and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” was inescapable. Then out of nowhere came “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia, a pop-rock banger so perfect it broke airplay records in the UK and Australia. Trying to sing along, badly, to its slide guitar solo was practically a rite of passage.
“Torn” catapulted 22-year-old Imbruglia to global fame, making her the latest Neighbours alum to pull off the tricky transition from soap to pop. But Imbruglia‘s sound and attitude, harnessed enthrallingly on her debut album Left of the Middle, was much more unexpected than her Ramsay Street predecessors. Her pure, expressive and slightly plaintive voice sounded tremendous on the album’s grungey but catchy pop songs, which were underpinned by Garbage-style guitar loops. Whether Imbruglia was exploring sexual jealousy on “Wishing I...

Arguably the biggest power couple in showbiz, Beyonce and Jay-Z, are nominated for Best Original Song at this year’s Critics Choice Movie Awards … but they’re nominated against each other for different projects. Which one of them do you think has the better chance of winning? And might they have a rematch at the Oscars?
Beyonce is nominated for “Be Alive,” her original song from “King Richard” which she co-wrote and co-produced with Dixson. It’s not her first bid from the Critics Choice Awards. She actually won this category for “Listen” from “Dreamgirls” (2006). That song was also nominated at the Oscars, but the motion picture academy disqualified her as a songwriter as they only allowed a maximum of three writers to be recognized: Henry Krieger, Scott Cutler, and Anne Preven, with Beyonce being the unlucky fourth. She made another play for awards recognition with “Spirit” from the photo-realistic...

Home cleaning often comes with the realization that you’ve amassed way too much stuff — including in your wardrobe. Donating your closet castoffs is one option, but you can also try to get a decent return on your sartorial investment by selling your unworn or gently-used merch online. (Plus, environmental advocates point out that a hefty amount of donated clothing and textiles end up in landfills, and resale helps to extend the life cycle of items).
But how exactly do you sell clothing online? And what are the best ways...

Ashley Calhoun, Pulse Music Group’s new head of creative, preaches the power of patience.
Calhoun knows a lot about long plays. She signed beloved R&b artist Kehlani to the publishing and label group in February, after five years of conversation. “There were just a lot of things, deal-wise, that needed to be worked out,” Calhoun says. “She was really focused on building out her catalog and her worth, which she did. And it was the right time for us to sign an artist at that level. It was all timing.

Last week, the ASCAP Pop Awards — a major songwriting awards show, closely watched by the entire music business — awarded Publisher of the Year to independently owned music company Kobalt. Considering that Kobalt’s songwriters helped write smash hits of 2019 like Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” and Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road” remix, its win isn’t exactly a surprise.
But Kobalt beat out the behemoth publishing arms of the three global music majors Universal, Warner, and Sony. In his 20 years of attending the awards, Kobalt...

Beyonce has 23 Grammys (and four more nominations there this year), but she won’t be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King.” It would’ve been a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. But it wasn’t meant to be. She made the shortlist, but missed the cut when the motion picture academy announced its final nominees. Check out of this year’s contenders in all 24 categories here.

This wasn’t Beyonce’s first close call at the Oscars. She co-wrote the song “Listen” from 2006’s big-screen adaptation of “Dreamgirls,” which she also starred in. That film was nominated for eight Oscars overall, including Best Original Song for three new tunes that were added to the score including “Listen,...

Sometimes, the end may just be the beginning. Sometimes, though, the end is truly the end.
In the news this week, the late rapper Mac Miller’s family has issued his first new music in two years. And then there’s Dolly Parton, who claims she’s recorded a ton of songs with her voice and a click track that she hopes an innovative producer can use to construct new music from her long after her departure.
On a sadder note, the world bid farewell to Rush drummer Neil Peart, the band’s lyricist and widely acknowledged as one of the best stickmen ever.
This week in music:
Mac Is Back: The family of the late rapper Mac Miller said they will release a posthumous album next week. Circles has already spawned a single that’s out, Good News. An accompanying video shows in-studio footage of Miller

A brand new, CGI version of “The Lion King” opened on July 19 featuring Beyonce as the voice of Nala, but she didn’t just contribute her voice acting to the film. She also produced and curated the soundtrack album “The Lion King: The Gift” and co-wrote and performed a new song, “Spirit.” Will she get Oscar’s attention? Most of our readers think she’ll be nominated for Best Original Song, but not everyone thinks she’ll win. Scroll down to see our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
A plurality of respondents (46%) think Beyonce will win for “Spirit,” which she co-wrote with Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth. Another 36% think she’ll be nominated, but not win, which means that a vast majority (82%) are betting on her to at least make the cut, which leaves only 18% who think Queen Bey will be snubbed entirely.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys, but she may be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King”; the song dropped on July 10 in advance of the film’s opening on July 19. Do you think it’ll cross that off her Egot bucket list? It would be a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. Listen to “Spirit” above.
Written by Ilya Salmanzadeh and Labrinth along with Beyonce, the song will be featured in the film as well as on “The Lion King: The Gift,” a compilation album produced and curated by Beyonce that will include the work of African artists and producers. Salmanzadeh has numerous songwriting credits for a variety of artists, including Ellie Goulding (“Love Me Like You Do”), Taylor Swift (“End Game”) and Ariana Grande. Labrinth, meanwhile, recently released “LSD,” a collaboration album with Sia and Diplo.

Lady Gaga can’t be in two places at once, especially two awards shows at two different sides of the pond this Sunday: the Grammys in Los Angeles and the BAFTAs in London.
We hear that Gaga will be performing at the Grammys where she is nominated for five awards, four for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born: record of the year, song of the year, best pop duo/group (with Bradley Cooper) performance and best song written for visual media. Her fifth Grammy nom is in the best pop solo performance category for her piano version of “Joanne”.
It would come as no surprise if she sings “Shallow” this Sunday. When the song “Listen” from 2007’s Dreamgirls was up for an Oscar nom, Beyonce took the opportunity to perform that song at the Grammys (the track was written by Henry Krieger and Scott Cutler with lyrics by Anne Preven).

Can Gokey do better than the likes of Elliott Yami, Nikki McKibbin and Melinda Doolittle?

If you're a Danny Gokey groupie, there are two ways to look at Wednesday night's "American Idol" results show, during which the 29-year-old singer was ousted from the competition: Weep for lost opportunity, or applaud Gokes for a job well sung and look forward to his career as a recording artist.
And just what sort of career will he have? Last week we took a look back at "Idol" fourth-place finishers, like Chris Daughtry and Josh Gracin, for clues about how 17-year-old Allison Iraheta might fare in years to come. Now we turn our attention to the #3 bootees, whose post-"Idol" careers are considerably less impressive than the #4 losers. Will Gokey fade away or break the mold?

- While what else did you expect? It’s a diner party where the guests drink (sometimes get drunk) and make their speeches a tad to long (Beatty), it’s a predictable awards show where newbies make insignificant victory speeches and where acting vets have at least one great line to deliver. It’s a moment where I get to know more about what’s going on in T.V land, and a moment when I ponder whether I should ever give a mini-series a chance. Kudos go to the Hfp for picking Borat for best comedy actor (I didn’t think they had the ‘balls’) – but the real question is Dreamgirls for real? Despite picking up 3 awards, I have yet to see it, and probably won’t but will it be a contender during the bigger party next month. We’ll see how the noms turn out next week.
