Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Balik, and more have joined Cate Blanchett in the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Father Mother Sister Brother.
Per Variety, the film recently wrapped production in Paris after previous shoots in Dublin and New Jersey, and will be completed later this year. The film is a triptych that follows three separate stories between parents and their adult children — one in Paris, one in Dublin, and one in the American Northeast.
The film’s description deems Father Mother Sister Brother as a “comedy interwoven with threads of melancholy,” with “character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental.” Jarmusch had hinted that the film will have a musical component, but it’s unknown whether the film will feature original songs or not. In addition to Driver, Waits, and Balik, Vicky Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat have also joined the cast.

Jim Jarmusch is back behind the camera after five years.
The auteur has formally announced his latest film “Father Mother Sister Brother,” his first since 2019’s “The Dead Don’t Die.” Jarmusch is reuniting with “The Dead Don’t Die” and “Paterson” actor Adam Driver, who is also leading Francis Ford Coppola’s buzzy Cannes debut “Megalopolis,” as well as his “Coffee & Cigarettes” star Cate Blanchett and frequent collaborator Tom Waits.
“Father Mother Sister Brother” is described as an anthology film following three separate stories centered on strained relationships between adult children and their parents. Each of the trio of plotlines take place in different countries: “Father” is set in the Northeast U.S., “Mother” takes place in Dublin, Ireland, and “Sister Brother” is based in Paris, France.
The film is a “series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental. A comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy,” the synopsis continues.

It’s at least autumn before we see Jim Jarmusch’s first film in five years, but his latest contribution is larger than most can manage: Sqürl, his musical outfit with Carter Logan, scored four newly restored shorts from the legendary Man Ray, which will debut on May 15. Janus Films are releasing it as a package entitled Man Ray: Return to Reason and encompassing Le retour à la raison, Emak-Bakia, L’étoile de mer, and Les Mystères du Château du Dé; there is now a trailer showcasing films and music alike.
Here’s the synopsis: “The four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929, Le Retour À LA Raison, Emak-bakia, L’ÉTOILE De Mer and Les MYSTÈRES Du CHÂTEAU Du DÉ represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema, a seminal nexus of experimental technique, surrealist narrative, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. Filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and his music partner Carter Logan’s SQÜRL want to induce a “psilocybin-inspired” experience for their latest project, a drone rock score written for four Man Ray films. The project debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, comprising Dadaist pioneer Man Ray’s “Return to Reason,” “Emak-Bakia,” “The Starfish,” and “The Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice,” with new music by SQÜRL. Now, the 4K-restored shorts, along with the score, are coming to theaters as one presentation this coming May. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for “Man Ray: Return to Reason,” as the series of four films has been dubbed, below.
The quartet of shorts holds up a distorted mirror to human sexuality as Jarmusch and Logan’s eerie music envelops the Freudian dreamscape — and while you might be tempted to take psychedelic drugs for the viewing, Jarmusch says that’s not necessary, as the fusion of sound...

SQÜRL, the duo of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and composer Carter Logan, have announced a new album, Music for Man Ray — “a sonic exploration of the cinematic works of Dadaist pioneer Man Ray.” It’s set to be released on May 17th via Sacred Bones.
For the past eight years, Jarmusch and Logan have been providing the live score to the short films of Man Ray in venues across the world. This culminated with the 100th anniversary of Man Ray’s inaugural foray into filmmaking in the spring of 2023, when the newly restored Man Ray: Return to Reason — a Man Ray anthology — premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The recordings on this particular album were born from a February 2023 performance at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Like with their past work under the SQÜRL moniker, the resulting music was created with “distorted guitars, hypnotic feedback, loops and affected synthesizers.”

While it’s understandable that many’s most-anticipated films at a festival are also some of the biggest titles of the season––evidenced by the instant sell-outs of the latest from Hayao Miyazaki, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sofia Coppola, Andrew Haigh, Jonathan Glazer, and more at the 61st New York Film Festival––one of the true joys of the experience is seeing work one may never find again. For this year’s edition of Film at Lincoln Center’s annual celebration of world cinema, we’ve gathered eight recommendations that currently don’t have U.S. distribution. While we imagine news will be announced soon for some of these selections, a release might not occur until next year, so be sure to catch them if you can.

Jim Jarmusch has undoubtedly been the most visible peripheral filmmaker of the last thirty years. Since his jagged rise to fame in the mid-1980s, he has worked with some of the most entrenched actors, actresses, producers, and distributors in Hollywood without ever becoming part of the establishment himself. Now, at the age of 70, his primary occupation is that of frontman for the “enthusiastically marginal rock band,” SQÜRL, which he formed with producer Carter Logan in 2009. “The film industry is kind of gone,” Jarmusch told the Guardian earlier this year. “It sucks.”
Last week, in an interview with Believer Magazine, Jarmusch reiterated that sentiment and expressed his indifference to some of cinema’s most beloved and successful films. “I will never see any Star Wars films, because I resent that I know so much about them and the characters. Why is all that in my head when I’ve never actually seen one,...

Room 999, one of the films premiering in the Cannes Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival, poses the question of whether cinema is dying, a casualty of the digital age, streaming platforms and other factors.
The answer will only become clear down the line, but in the meantime Cannes Classics itself is playing a substantive role in preserving and celebrating cinema, an artform now over 125 years old. Each year, the festival section headed by Gérald Duchaussoy screens a curated selection of newly-restored classics, a lineup in 2023 that includes Hitchcock’s Spellbound (1945), the Armenian romantic drama Hello, It’s Me (1965), Bertrand Tavernier and Robert Parrish’s documentary Mississippi Blues (1983), the German drama Es (1966), and the 1934 French comedy Ces messieurs de la Santé.
‘El Esqueleto de la Señora Morales’
“We want to represent as many cinématographies as possible,” Duchaussoy tells Deadline, employing a French term that refers to the whole of a film and its techniques.

The first time Jim Jarmusch came to Cannes was with his sophomore film Stranger Than Paradise, which played the Quinzaine in 1984. “We all shared one apartment that had no hot water, that was up the hill,” he recalls. “One day I had to be on TV and there was no water, so I had to shave with leftover tea.” Those days are long gone; Jarmusch is a fixture on the Croisette these days, and even had the dubious pleasure of opening it in 2019 with his Bill Murray-starring zombie comedy The Dead Don’t Die.
This year he arrived at the festival with a piece for Cannes Classics called The Return to Reason, a work-in-progress restoration of four films by American artist Man Ray shot in Paris during the early 1920s. Jim Jarmusch hopes his latest project — a soundtrack composed with his SQÜRL bandmate Carter Logan for a new restoration of Man Ray silent films — induces in viewers a “psilocybin-inspired” experience.
The “Only Lovers Left Alive” and “Stranger Than Paradise” filmmaker and musician, along with Logan, spoke exclusively with IndieWire about the screening of four early-1900s black-and-white shorts from Dadaist pioneer Man Ray hitting Cannes Classics tonight: “Return to Reason,” “Emak-Bakia,” “The Starfish,” and “The Mysteries of the Chateau of Dice.”
Together, Jarmusch and Logan improvised an original score, a tripped-out sonic soup of distorted guitars and loopy feedback, now recorded to accompany the films. The quartet of shorts holds up a distorted mirror to human sexuality as Jarmusch and Logan’s eerie music envelops the Freudian dreamscape — and while you might be tempted to drop a tab of acid or mushroom cap or two for the viewing, Jarmusch says that’s not necessary,...

Just a few weeks ago we got the welcome news that Jim Jarmusch is finally planning to shoot a new feature this year, backed by Saint Laurent. Then just today, a special collaboration featuring Jarmusch scoring Man Ray restorations was announced for Cannes. Those two don’t mark the only projects the artist is up to: after many singles, EPs, and score contributions to his own films, Jarmusch and Carter Logan’s band SQÜRL have now released their first fully-fledged album, titled “Silver Haze.”
“The length of things that you release [is] so arbitrary,” Jarmusch told Spin. “For example, our feature films are 90 minutes to two and a half hours based on the turnaround in a movie theater. It’s not based on the aesthetic design of filmmaking, because a great film can be two minutes long or six hours long. The whole idea of these arbitrary formats are interesting and silly,...

In keeping with tradition, the 2023 edition of Cannes Classics promises to be a feast for cineastes with tributes to global masters and restored versions of all-time classics.
Cannes Classics’ Memories of Jean-Luc Godard strand pays homage to the master who died in 2022 by screening a restored version of “Contempt” (1963); “Godard by Godard,” a self-portrait of the auteur; and the world premiere of “Phony Wars,” a trailer for a film that will never get made, described by the festival as a venture where the filmmaker “transformed his synopses into aesthetic programs.”
Liv Ullman will be present at the strand with “Liv Ullmann – A Road Less Travelled,” a documentary directed by Dheeraj Akolkar.
Japanese master Ozu Yasujiro will be paid tribute to with screenings of “Record of a Tenement Gentleman” (1947) and “The Munekata Sisters” (1950) off restored prints. “Return to Reason” – where four films of painter, photographer and director Man Ray have been...

We’re now in the month of Cannes Film Festival 2023 and they have a few more surprises up their sleeves thanks to the announcement of their Cannes Classics lineup. After being heavily rumored, it’s now confirmed a posthumous film from the legendary Jean-Luc Godard will premiere at the festival, billed as “Trailer of the film that will never exist: Phony Wars” and clocking at 20 minutes. Described as “the ultimate gesture of cinema,” Godard wrote this accompanying text: “No longer trusting the billions of diktats of the alphabet to give back their freedom to the incessant metamorphoses and metaphors of a true language by returning to the places of past shootings, while taking into account the present stories.”
Also amongst the lineup is Room 999 featuring interviews with James Gray, Rebecca Zlotowski, Claire Denis, Olivier Assayas, Nadav Lapid, Asghar Farhadi, and Alice Rohrwacher; a mini Ozo retro; Man Ray restorations scored...

The Cannes Film Festival will pay tribute to iconic late director Jean-Luc Godard, following his death last September, with a trio of works in its Cannes Classic cinema heritage line-up.
A highlight of the homage to Godard, who died last year at 91, will be the world premiere of the 20-minute trailer he created for a film that will never get made: ‘Drôles de Guerres (Phoney Wars).
The 20-minute work is billed as A Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello and Vixens production, in coproduction with L’Atelier.
“Jean-Luc Godard often transformed his synopses into aesthetic programs. Phoney Wars follows in this tradition and will remain as the ultimate gesture of cinema,” said the festival.
It quoted the text that accompanies the short work to give an indication of the director’s intention. It reads: “To no longer trust the billions of diktats of the alphabet to give back freedom to the incessant...

At 70, the outsider movie hero is releasing his first album. He muses on music, the demise of film and finding joy in mistakes
There are few film-makers quite as particular about music as Jim Jarmusch. Over the years, he’s enlisted Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA to score his hitman-meets-samurai flick Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, had Tom Waits and Iggy Pop jacked up on caffeine and locking horns in a thick swirl of smoke in 2003’s Coffee and Cigarettes, and got Neil Young to let rip some improvised guitar for the soundtrack to Dead Man. Not to mention that his films feature acting turns by everyone from Joe Strummer to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and he directed a documentary on the Stooges along the way.
“Music’s always been there,” he says, in his unmistakable deep baritone register, speaking from New York. “Since being a teenager, music has been...

If you happened to be at the Overlook Film Festival earlier this month, you were gifted with the rare opportunity to see Jim Jarmusch onstage twice. Once was during a live performance by Sqürl, the band he cofounded with collaborator and producer Carter Logan; the other was the tenth-anniversary screening of “Only Lovers Left Alive.” On paper, it was the perfect synthesis of art forms and artists, with Jarmusch and Logan playing songs from the “Only Lovers Left Alive” soundtrack before introing the film the following day.

For the past decade, Jim Jarmusch has walked two paths in the entertainment industry. While he continues to be best known for his work as a filmmaker and music video director, Jarmusch also performs with producer Carter Logan under the name Sqürl, a self-described “enthusiastically marginal rock band from New York City” that has also collaborated on the soundtracks for Jarmusch’s last three films. But according to the director, only one of those roles may be part of his next project.

Considering it’s never been more than a few years between feature films for Jim Jarmusch, here’s hoping we get news about his next project soon. In the meantime, after many singles, EPs, and score contributions to his own films, Jarmusch and Carter Logan’s band SQÜRL is now set to release their first fully-fledged album. Titled “Silver Haze,” it’ll drop on May 5 via Sacred Bones and the first single “Berlin ’87” has arrived.
With a hat tip to Brooklyn Vegan, they report the Randall Dunn-produced album also features Charlotte Gainsbourg, Anika, and Marc Ribot. Jem Cohen has also directed the music video for the first single. “He’s one of our favorite filmmakers, and with his magical hands and eyes, he somehow captures the most evocative details that most people don’t even notice,” the band said. “The images he has chosen and shaped so perfectly evoke the feeling of our music,...

SQÜRL, the duo of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan, have announced their debut album, Silver Haze, out May 5th via Sacred Bones. As a preview, they’ve shared the opening track, “Berlin ’87,” and its accompanying video.
Silver Haze is described in a press release as “a poetic journey of spoken words, dynamic instrumentals, drone riffs, and distorted effects, one that features tubular bells and a cello in addition to their signature stacks of delay, encircling the listener in a warm oscillation both delicate and devastating.”
Produced by Randall Dunn, it features Charlotte Gainsbourg, Anika, and Marc Ribot. Pre-orders are ongoing. See the artwork and tracklist below.
“Berlin ’87” features heavy, droning guitar riffs first laid down by Jarmusch in his home studio while inspired by memories of living in — you guessed it — Berlin in 1987. The skeleton track was then “SQÜRLized by Carter and Randall at Circular Ruin,” according to a press release.

The recent announcement of the upcoming Mötley Crüe/Poison/Def Leppard tour inspired pangs of hair-metal nostalgia among a certain generation.
