Almost two years have gone by since A24 announced that production was underway on the psychological horror film The Front Room, with Brandy Norwood taking on the lead role and Max and Sam Eggers – the younger brothers of The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman director Robert Eggers – at the helm. Now the film finally has a release date. Deadline reports that A24 will be sending The Front Room out to theatres on September 6th, putting it in direct competition with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Based on a short story by Susan Hill, The Front Room centers on a young, newly pregnant couple forced to take in an ailing stepmother who has long been estranged from the family. According to Deadline, a woman’s mother-in-law moves in and proves to be the house guest from hell. If you would like to read the short story source material, it can be found in...

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will kick off with Quentin Dupieux’s “The Second Act,” a star-studded surreal French comedy headlined by Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel and Raphaël Quenard, Variety has learned.
The anticipated movie is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi, a Mediawan company, and is represented in international markets by Kinology. The film will play out of competition on May 14 and will be released on the same day in French theaters.
Laced with absurdist humor, the meta movie follows actors starring in a doomed film production. Dupieux is one of France’s most popular and prolific filmmakers. He delivered two films in 2023: “Daaaaaalí,” which played out-of-competition at Venice, and “Yannick,” a French box office hit that sold around the world.
In confirming the film’s selection at Cannes, the festival described Quentin as a “filmmaker who embraces freedom – in tone, form and...

At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford and Scarlett Johansson hit the red carpet to premiere their latest big movies. But Hollywood may have a much lighter presence at the 2024 edition of one of the world’s most notable film festivals.
The culprit is the combination of last year’s actors and writers strikes, which created production delays, as well as a tough economy that’s leading studios to tighten the purse-strings. But there will still be stars on the Croisette, in addition to “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who will be presiding over the jury.
Based on intelligence from industry insiders on both sides of the Atlantic, the upcoming edition will have a larger emphasis on European auteurs, along the lines of Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” which were each nominated for five Oscars.

Roll up, roll up: It’s Cannes prognostication time.
With the 77th edition of the great cinema showcase less than three months away, the blurred outline of a lineup is beginning to emerge. At this stage, the process of elimination is as telling as the process of inclusion: hardly any films have been guaranteed a slot by the festival, but we’re starting to get some clarity on which projects are likely to be ready and which are leaning towards a different launch strategy.
There has been a longstanding expectation that George Miller will be back at the festival with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Cannes chief Thierry Frémaux himself has said he “hopes” it’ll be there and while it isn’t locked yet, nothing we’re hearing so far indicates it won’t be at the festival. The film’s May 22 France release date and Miller’s long...

It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s 80s-set “IMAX thrill-ride” for Bad Robot is shrouded in secrecy. So could Flowervale Street be another Cloverfield spin-off? We look at the possible clues.
We’ve been following the slightly under-the-radar progress of Flowervale Street for some time now. An upcoming film from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell, it has been shrouded in secrecy for several months, with even that title currently in question.
As more details about the project have emerged, though, we’ve began to wonder: could it be another film in the Cloverfield series? If so, this would place it in a series that has so far included the 2008 original and the spin-offs 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).
Let’s take a quick look at the clues we currently have to hand.

The PG-13 rating, at least for horror, often induces derision or skepticism, like an instant shackle on the horror. A PG-13 rating broadcasts straightaway not to expect any excessive gore, violence, or any of the explicit fun stuff that tends to be horror’s bread and butter. But those things aren’t synonymous with horror’s true aim, which is to scare you silly.
Luckily, PG-13 horror has proven time and time again throughout the decades that it’s more than capable of inducing chills. Especially when it comes to the supernatural.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to PG-13 horror movies that bring the terror through ghostly jump scares, ominous atmosphere, and more. That the PG-13 rating means they also double as potential gateway horror for the budding monster kid is a bonus.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.
However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

Up next from Babak Anvari is a psychological thriller titled Hallow Road, and Deadline reports today that Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) will star.
Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) is also on board for this one.
“The film watches as two parents enter a race against time when they receive a distressing late-night phone call from their daughter after she caused a tragic car accident.”
Deadline notes, “Production is taking place in Ireland and Prague, with Lucan Toh of Two & Two Pictures and Ian Henry of London Film & TV producing. XYZ Films is the financier.”
William Gillies wrote the screenplay for Hallow Road.
Anvari said in a statement, “I treasure the opportunity to collaborate with Rosamund and Matthew, two hugely talented actors who I’ve long admired, on Hallow Road. I believe we can create something emotionally intense, and charged with uncanny terror, that nevertheless taps into something relatable to all families.

He writhes and screams as a contraption comes near his face, a Pov shot revealing buzzing blades, grinding gears, and a set of glowing red eyes. The security guard scrambles to set himself free, trying to control his hyperventilating long enough to shake loose one of the restraints. But it’s no good. The contraption settles on his face, drowning his screams under a mechanical mask.

2023 happens to be the 15th anniversary of the release of the creature feature Cloverfield (watch it Here), which was directed by Matt Reeves and spawned an anthology franchise, being followed by Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and Julius Onah’s The Cloverfield Paradox. Last year, Under the Shadow‘s Babak Anvari signed on to direct a new Cloverfield sequel from a screenplay by iBoy writer Joe Barton. The only information we’ve really learned about this new Cloverfield sequel is that, unlike the original film, it won’t be presented in the found footage style. But during an interview with CinemaBlend, 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg revealed that the film is setting aside the anthology approach to be a direct sequel to the original film. He also said that it’s going to be “very cool”.

The Cloverfield franchise may have been dormant for the past few years, but like the titular creature, it will rise again when you least expect it. That’s the fun of this sci-fi horror franchise, which first made its name as a viral hit in 2008 before expanding into a larger universe of stories involving aliens and alternate dimensions. You never know when a new installment might drop.
Such is the case with Cloverfield 4, which, as is tradition in this series, is shrouded in mystery. What we know for sure is that it’s being penned by British screenwriter Joe Barton and will be directed by Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow). Unlike the other sequels, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, which began life as completely unrelated standalone scripts before being rewritten and integrated into the Cloverfield franchise, Cloverfield 4 is being developed specifically for the franchise.

It's been five years since a "Cloverfield" movie has graced our screens, but that appears to be changing now that a relic of the past from when the franchise first launched has resurfaced. As fans of the J.J. Abrams-produced monster movie franchise are no doubt well aware, secrecy and viral marketing have been a gimmick big part of the franchise since the very beginning. Now, a bit of viral marketing tied to the original 2008 blockbuster that started it all has us thinking that a sequel is imminent.
The Slusho website is once again active after being offline for some time. In 2007, well ahead of the release of "Cloverfield," a website for the fictional drink appeared and included an interactive game, though nothing directly connected to the movie. (It was all in-universe.) In its present-day form, visitors to the website are greeted with happy animated characters and a tagline boasting,...

One of the more interesting things about "Cloverfield" is how the speculation and discussion leading up to the movie hardly waned after its release. The mystery of the movie's premise had finally been revealed, but audiences still had more questions than answers. The found footage monster movie puts audiences into the perspective of ordinary people unaware of the circumstances leading to a kaiju attack in New York, allowing "Cloverfield" to lean more into the thriller genre, never short on suspense or scares. The uncertainty of it all is a big reason why the film is so appealing. By the time the credits rolled on that ominous ending, discussion and theorizing were inevitable.
There was always speculation about another story following the events of "Cloverfield," although a direct sequel never came to fruition. Anthology films "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "The Cloverfield Paradox" were released and had Twilight-Zone-like approaches to their stories.

2023 marks the 15th anniversary of the release of the creature feature Cloverfield (watch it Here), which was directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay by Drew Goddard and produced by J.J. Abrams. The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Reeves specifically to discuss the fact that 15 years have gone by since Cloverfield reached screens, and during the conversation Reeves mentioned an idea for a direct sequel to the film and revealed that he doesn’t think they could keep a movie secret today the way they did when they were working on Cloverfield.
When asked why a direct sequel to Cloverfield has been so tough to crack, Reeves answered, “Well, to be honest with you, when we finished, we [Reeves, Abrams, Goddard] all had ideas for what the sequel could be, and it was just one of those things where our schedules got pulled off into different directions. More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

The Cloverfield series was ambitious from the start. When the first teaser trailer made an unannounced premiere with Michael Bay’sTransformers back in 2007, it started buzz with mysterious, ominous found footage of an unseen force attacking New York City. It showed the head of the Statue of Liberty getting thrown onto a city street and capped off with only a date and no title. Since the release, the J.J. Abrams-produced movie would eventually turn into an anthology, with the word “Cloverfield” being the only connecting tissue.

Joe Barton is looking back on what could have been.

Ultimately, Warner Bros. Discovery decided to part ways with the concept entirely, and reimagined the series as a “horror movie or a haunted house” centered on Gotham mental institute Arkham Asylum, according to executive producer Reeves. “The Staircase” showrunner Antonio Campos is now helming the series.
“It was pretty chaotic when I was doing my thing there so in a way, I didn’t get to avoid the chaos. I think we were slightly the first wave of that chaos,” Barton said of the scrapped series to Variety amid the Warner Bros. Earlier this year we learned that following up his five-film anthology Small Axe, Steve McQueen’s next narrative feature is Blitz, which will tell the story of Londoners during WWII in 1940 as they endure the German bombing campaign known as The Blitz, which lasted for eight months. With production set to kick off this fall from Apple, Deadline now reports that Saoirse Ronan will lead the film.
After being in development for a few years, a new Cloverfield film is now moving forward and a director has been found. The fourth film in the franchise, following the better-left-forgotten The Cloverfield Paradox, will be helmed by Under the Shadow and Wounds director Babak Anvari, Deadline reports. Scripted by Joe Barton and produced by J.J. Abrams, of course no details have been unveiled quite yet, but with Anvari’s genre skills, expect this one to pack some terror and thrills.

Another Cloverfield Movie Is In The Works At Paramount With Wounds Director Babak Anvari At The Helm
Like just about everything else related to Warner Bros. Discovery, Bad Robot's partnership with HBO Max and DC is very much on the fritz right now. Luckily, the company still has plenty of irons in other fires to fall back on elsewhere. With the future of the slow-moving "Star Trek 4" once again up in the air following Matt Shakman's recent exit as director, it seems a different Bad Robot sci-fi project is roaring back to life over at Paramount Pictures.
According to Deadline, Paramount has a new "Cloverfield" movie in the works, with J.J. Abrams (as always) producing for Bad Robot. The film is being written by Joe Barton, who also penned 2017's "The Ritual" and recently created the sci-fi series "The Lazarus Project" for Sky Max. Babak Anvari is attached to direct, with original "Cloverfield" writer-director duo Drew Goddard and Matt Reeves also onboard as executive producers.
