In 2011, Universal has picked up Grim Night, a scary and hot spec written by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Rey, with Bryan Bertino attached as director. The spec came with a trailer that helped set the mood of the script and stoked the flames of interest. (Hollywood loves its visual aids.) Now Bestenheider is back with a new project titled The Storm and it too comes with a video, which sets up our scenario: A mysterious solar cloud has erupted from the sun and heads towards Earth. What will be its effects? No one knows. But all citizens should

How’s this for a cool movie premise: once a year, strange creatures from unknown origins known as Grims appear on one specific spot on the planet and go on a rampage that kill thousands, and no one knows who they are or why they do it. Tonight, their target is a small town in America, and it’s up to a father to protect his family from these fiendish creatures of destruction. Of all the towns in all the world, am I right? The script for “Grim Night”, by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey was a hot item last year, when Universal snatched it up in a heated bidding war. Universal has now set German director Dennis Gansel (last year’s female vampire flick “We Are the Night”) to direct for them. Gansel’s “We are the Night” opened in limited release Stateside last year and followed a Berlin...

Back in October of last year we got the first word that Unbroken Films partners Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Adrienne Biddle were partnering with Marc Platt to produce Grim Night for Universal, and now finally a director has been chosen.
Per Variety, German helmer Dennis Gansel is in negotiations to make his U.S. directorial debut on Grim Night, which is based on the original screenplay and short film by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. The film is set in a world where people lock themselves indoors one night a year for fear of random attacks from creatures known as the Grims. Below is a promo trailer put together by Bertino last year when he was marketing the idea to various studios.

In a big move for helmer Dennis Gansel, Variety reports that Universal have pinned down the German helmer to tackle a horror picture, Grim Night. Marc Platt (Drive, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Unbroken Pictures have thrown some weight behind this, a semi-adaptation of Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey‘s short film; they’ve also composed the feature-length incarnation’s screenplay. Gansel is currently in talks for the job.
Both have what is, on the surface, a very simple premise: Every year, for one night, creatures of the unknown (named “Grims”) invade a small town and wreak havoc upon those not locked behind their doors. The direction it takes from that point forward is unbeknownst to us, though the original work clearly (hopefully) had enough going on to make this a worthy endeavor. The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

For the seventh annual year a list of the top unproduced screenplays written in the past 12 calendar months has been made. The Black List is the most recognized and celebritized compilation for screenwriters and unknown movie ideas to be heard. While some prior Black List scripts have gone on to be made (like Juno or 500 Days of Summer), most scripts do not. However, what being on The Black List can do is to give a big push of credibility to a screenwriter hoping to carve out a career in Hollywood.
The Black List recepients are chosen by a committee of 300 individuals working in Hollywood: agents, writers, producers, managers and the like. They read the screenplays that float around the showbiz ecosystem; some are bought and are already in development while others are still seeing the interest of talent of financial backers.

The 2011 Black List has arrived online and there are a bunch of the hottest scripts in Hollywood. Some have already been picked up by studios, while most are still unproduced. Here is the press release: The Black List was compiled from the suggestions of over 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2011 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year.
This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the The Black List.
All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein. The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2011 affiliations.
It has been said many times, but it's worth repeating:
The Black List is not a "best of" list. It is, at best, a "most liked" list.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. This year at the Austin Film Festival, studio executive and “Black List” founder Franklin Leonard introduced the opening film, Butter. It’s a fantastic satirical comedy written by Jason Micallef and Leonard’s post-screening Q&A with him was equally hilarious and unconventional.
Sitting in the upper deck at the Paramount Theatre, I was in awe at how Leonard had not only created the list just six years prior but how it provided such legitimacy to emerging screenwriters, like Micallef. He was relatively unknown in ‘08, but his script placed third on the list. Now he has a movie coming out starring Jennifer Garner, his new scripts have Jack Black and Jason Segel attached (separately), and he wrote a movie titled Good Vibrations about, um, marital aids starring Charlize Theron. That’s the power of the Black List.

After Paramount's "Paranormal Activity 3" opened to $52 million on a $5 million budget, other studios launched a bidding war for "Grim Night," a spec script written by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. This was the plan when the story was being conceived. And to give the project a little extra, the script came with a teaser trailer that was put together specifically to help with the sale. Universal Pictures ended up outbidding everyone. "Grim Night" revolves around strange creatures that come out one night every year to attack Earth and kill thousands, targeting different places with no one knowing why. The story centers on a family in small town America that gets attacked and has to defend themselves. Check out the teaser below. Teaser: If you cannot see the player, click here.

Be they aliens or creatures, all invasions movies have one thing in common: they're a one-time story. The baddies show up, they cause a ruckus, humans fight back, and that's that. Grim Night, however, doesn't want to go that route. Written by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey, Grim Night posits a world where the invasion doesn't just happen once, it happens every year. Every 365 days, strange, cloaked creatures besiege a different place on our planet, killing thousands in the process. Then they vanish. Bestenheider and Bey's script will focus on one family in middle America dealing with the titular night. Bryan Bertino, the director of The Strangers, will produce alongside Adrienne Biddle. The duo, who run Unbroken Pictures, carefully planned their sales pitch...

[1] Universal has beat out several other studios in a bidding war for Grim Night, a spec by first-time feature writers Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. The horror thriller centers around an annual day in which people all over the globe lock themselves in their homes in an effort to avoid violent, seemingly random attacks by terrifying creatures known as Grims. Bestenheider, Bey, and producers Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) and Adrienne Brittle took a slightly unusual (but apparently effective) approach to the sale, releasing a trailer late last week to pique industry and public interest in the movie. Watch the video and read more about the project after the jump. The sale comes right after Paramount found success with last weekend's Paranormal Activity 3, which grossed $52.6 million in its first three days on a production budget of just $5 million. Dementors seem to have found work after the Harry Potter films wrapped. August 20th or “Grim Night” has turned into the night to fear death as one night a year, hooded beings called Grims, undoubtedly short for Grim Reapers, descend upon the world’s population to harvest souls.
According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has won out in an auction against six other studios for this spec script by Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey. Unbroken Films’ Bryan Bertino and Adrienne Biddle have teamed with Marc Platt to produce the film.
The teaser put together to promote the project conveys the fear beset on the world with 97,112 dead. Fema PSAs advise people to stay in their homes to “Stay Alive, Stay Inside.” (Sadly, the toll free phone number on the posters don’t actually lead to any more details of the film.)

Last week, a title landed on the tracking boards called Grim Night . There are thousands of movies out there that have fantastic concepts, but most are unlucky in that they don't get picked up by a big-name production company, and are thus doomed to make due with their minuscule budget. One such film that is among the lucky is 'Grim Night.' THR reports that Universal Pictures won a bidding war for the film that was brought on by its screenplay and its promotional trailer that made its way online a few days back. You can check it out below. The random disappearances of much of the Earth's population has been done quite a bit in cinematic history, so 'Grim Night' has come up with a twist: rather than simply disappearing, several thousands of people are killed once a year by unknown assailants. It's easy to pick on the promotional trailer as it was probably put together with very little money. The Grim Reaper...

What's a pair of guys hoping to break into the big leagues of Hollywood got to do to make the studios take notice of their ideas? Back in the olden days (they were called the 1990s), screenwriters looking to catch the attention of agents used to mail gimmicks, like ticking clocks, to build up interest in the script that they were going to courier them at the end of the week. Today, doing that would get you a quick visit from the Department of Homeland Security.
So Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey decided a new approach that used this thing called the Internet, or more specifically YouTube. They created a trailer for their spec script Grim Night and uploaded it to YouTube. And what do you know, it worked.

Spec scripts are coming back into fashion in Hollywood, but what also seems clear is that if you want a studio to take notice of your little opus, a fake trailer is the way to go. The latest to adopt that strategy are Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey, who just sold their Grim Night to Universal for rather a lot of money.Fake trailers, of course, aren't new at all: the Coen Brothers made one to get Blood Simple up and running. But living in the future as we do, we now at least get to see them when enterprising execs leak them online. So what we can immediately glean about Grim Night is that it's an interesting looking mash-up of dark fairytale, conventional stalker-horror-alien-invasion-monster-movie, and currently modish global pandemic story. It seems that once a year, be-hooded "Grims" visit the entire world, causing planet-wide panic and much battening down of hatches.
