“Black Mirror,” “Silo” and “The Last of Us” were among winners at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday night in London.
“Black Mirror” Season 6 was among a handful of shows to take home two awards, with creator Charlie Brooker and writer Bisha K Ali winning in the drama writer category while the show also won best photography and lighting in fiction category for the episode “Demon 79.”
The awards were a win for Apple TV+ with “Silo” and “Slow Horses” also each taking home two awards, the former for original music in fiction and production design and the latter for sound in fiction and editing in fiction.
Meanwhile “The Last of Us” director Peter Hoar took home an award for best fiction director.
Period drama “The Great” also picked up a gong thanks to costume designer Sharon Long.

“The Crown” is back in the Emmy race again with its fifth season and the final completion of its ensemble rotation cast. The last time it was eligible in 2021, the historical drama about Queen Elizabeth II swept all the main categories at the Emmys and won 11 awards overall including Best Drama Series. Throughout the respective seasons of The Crown and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the audience watches two royal women, Princess Diana and Charlotte, take charge of their narratives. Their evolution also is visible in their hair.
Diana’s hair grows out from her iconic crop in the fifth season of the Netflix drama, eventually getting sleeker and more glamorous as she liberates herself from her marriage to Prince Charles. “For me, that evolution is of someone who is taking her independence and realizing her own value, her star value and what she was doing,” says The Crown hair designer Cate Hall. “She sort of looked like a film star by the end of that period.” It coincides with a change in hairdressing: “Her hair was silkier. Everything looked more glossy.”

In partnership with Netflix, for this edition, we look at how the crafts team behind “The Crown” evolved its visual language and storytelling for Season 5.
From the series’ inception, “The Crown” has been structured to evolve as the story of Queen Elizabeth’s reign unfolded. The most notable change, of course, has been the rotating cast, with first Claire Foy, then Olivia Coleman, and finally Imelda Staunton brought in to play the British monarch who stoically bore witness to seven decades of national crises. But the team behind the camera has also kept up with the decades, making adjustments that give Season 5 a weight and poignancy: this is the period where everything’s going wrong with Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), but we know just how much further wrong it will go.

Transforming actors into well-known figures such as Tammy Wynette and Princess Diana was a challenge for artisans, who experimented with techniques to come up with hair and makeup that would look authentic to viewers.
Cate Hall spent hours with Elizabeth Debicki while recreating Princess Diana’s sophisticated coiffure from the early 1990s for Season 5 of “The Crown.” Through a series of incremental adjustments to the wig — and plenty of patience from Debicki – Hall got the look she desired.
“You hold one another’s hand as you keep slicing the wig with a razor and inching towards a shape that feels recognizable,” she recalls of her collaboration with Debicki.
Hall admits that in her first attempt at the wig, Debicki looked more like a “lady called Brenda from 1983” than the glamorous royal. But she kept working on it.
And once the hair was right, it was a matter of the other...

Emmys: Netflix Kicks Off Campaign Season with ‘Wednesday’ Stunt, Relocates ‘FYSee Space’ (Exclusive)
Netflix, perennially a key player in the Emmy race, is launching its 2023 Emmy campaigns on Wednesday with a, well, Wednesday-themed stunt.
Indeed, many voters and tastemakers will receive a hump-day visit — and hand-delivery of goodies — from a trio associated with the streamer’s hit comedy series: “Lurch,” the Addams family’s butler, who will be driving a class black 1930s hearse; “Wednesday Addams,” the titular teenager with psychic powers; and “Thing,” the sentient disembodied hand.
Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, Netflix will — for the fifth year in a row, but for the first year at Red Studios at 846 N. Cahuenga Blvd. in Los Angeles — welcome TV Academy members to an elaborate “FYSee Space” at which it will showcase activations and host star-studded panels and performances in promotion of its numerous Emmy hopefuls. Over the weekend, the La Biennale di Venezia launched its new Biennale Cinema Channel in collaboration with Italian streamer MYmovies, offering up a streamable selection of films which have featured in previous editions of the Venice International Film Festival but which are not currently available elsewhere in Italy. The channel drops with an initial library of 36 titles which featured in various sections of the festival between 2007 and 2020. In September, the first group of films will be supplemented with titles available on the 2021 festival’s Sala Web from Sept. 1-11, and continuously updated thereafter. The channel is available as a monthly subscription for €7.90 ($9.38) or in three-month blocks for €19.90 ($23.62).

Princess Diana was always known for her iconic looks throughout her life in the public eye, from her fairy-tale wedding gown worn with the Spencer family tiara, to her black “revenge” dress from the night Prince Charles admitted his infidelity. In Season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown, the princess, played by Emma Corrin, displayed the evolution of her style, from her arrival as an outsider to become a fully-fledged member of the Royal Family.

“The Crown” is one of TV’s most heralded series, winning top Emmy Awards through the years for Best Supporting Actor (John Lithgow), Best Drama Actress (Claire Foy) and Best Drama Directing (Stephen Daldry), among others. However, it lost the top Best Drama Series trophy on its first three tries to “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017), “Game of Thrones” (2018) and “Succession” (2020). The fourth time could be the charm for Netflix’s popular regal series, as it leads all of the other drama contenders at the upcoming 2021 Emmys, according to Gold Derby predictions.

It isn’t often that Variety gets to break news to “The Crown” star and seasoned award-winning actor Gillian Anderson, but on the afternoon of Feb. 3, Anderson found herself rushing through the door after a photoshoot to get on the phone with us. She had no idea that what she had missed in the midst of getting through her to-do list was groundbreaking.

The BBC has ordered “A Tabloid Empire,” a three-part documentary series on Rupert Murdoch’s influence over the British press.
The series will air on BBC Two in the U.K. and examine in detail Britain’s popular press between 1997 and 2012, a period that covers phone hacking and corruption but that also saw Murdoch’s and other papers wielding great influence over politics and society in general.
“House of Assad” producer 72 Films will make the series, which will use archives from the period as well as interviews with key figures from the time. The BBC promised that the series will document “the colorful characters and unrivaled power of those at the top, forensically deconstructing some of the most iconic and infamous moments of modern times.”
Despite closing down the weekly News of the World as a result of the phone-hacking scandal, Murdoch still owns The Times and The Sun in Britain.

The three-part series, which will air on BBC Two, will explore the extraordinary reach of the Murdoch empire across the British press. Covering the period from 1997 to 2012, the series examines how the press went from exerting astonishing influence over British politics and public to being mired in scandal from phone hacking to corruption, culminating in the revelations of the Leveson Enquiry.
