Rising British actor and former Screen Star Of Tomorrow Callum Turner (BBC-twc’s War & Peace) stars in the rom-com, which is produced by Joshua Astrachan (Short Term 12) and David Kaplan (It Follows) of New York indie maestros Animal Kingdom, alongside Andrea Roa (Drinking Buddies) and Jamund Washington (Gimme The Loot). Washington also shares a story by credit on the film.
Green Room star Turner plays opposite another rising actor Grace Van Patten, who recently wrapped on Noah Baumbach’s upcoming untitled comedy with Emma Thompson, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman.

We’d like to give as much insight into the project other than cast list and title, but Adam Leon‘s sophomore film has been existing somewhere off the radar. His debut became the Cinderella story of 2012 for micro-budgeted American indies. Gimme the Loot won the Grand Jury – Best Narrative Feature prize at the 2012 SXSW Film Fest and then became one of the rare SXSW-selected titles to break into Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section. Nominated for the Gotham Awards’ Breakthrough Director Award and both a nominee (for Best First Feature) and winner (Someone to Watch Award) at the Indie Spirits Awards, we imagine that the coin helped fund his larger-budgeted follow up. Working with another young cast, Tramps includes actors Callum Turner (Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room) and newcomers Grace Van Patten and Michal Vondel.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries” …
Andrea Roa: Tranparent, The Babadook, Fun Home.
Lavallee: With regards to the casting choice of Cobie Smulders, what were some of the personality traits that you were looking for in the casting process of the anti-domesticated, career-oriented future mother to be Samantha.
Roa: Pregnant!
Lavallee: This is your second “Swanberg” feature, I was wondering at what point did you come on board, and how long of a gestation period was there since Unexpected was shot late in the game (early Fall).
Roa: I came on board last year at Sundance when Kris and I met to discuss the script. So it came together quickly.
Lavallee: Between features Drinking Buddies, Sunlight Jr. and now Unexpected, you’ve maintained strong ties (in the producing capacity) to short filmmaking/filmmakers. Could you describe your attraction to the form?
Roa: The attraction is the filmmaker.

Exclusive: NBA All Star and TNT analyst Chris Webber is powering forward into movies with Unexpected, the Cobie Smulders drama from director Kris Swanberg that debuts in competition this month at Sundance. He’s joining his Emmy-winning producing partner Peter Gilbert as executive producer on the film, about a Chicago inner-city teacher (The Avengers’ Smulders) who discovers she’s pregnant and forms a bond with a student (newcomer Gail Bean) who’s in a similar, but very different situation.
Unexpected is written by Swanberg and Megan Mercier and produced by Andrea Roa. It’s set to premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category, marking a Park City first as Swanberg’s filmmaker-husband Joe Swanberg also has a film debuting in the festival – Digging For Fire, starring Orlando Bloom and Rosemarie DeWitt.

We usually expect the unexpected, but in this case, the Unexpected would totally be unexpected. With two previous features under her belt, Kris Swanberg would be in different predictions posture if she had begun filming a little earlier in the year. While Joe Swanberg dug into Digging For Fire (also on my predictions list) in April-ish, shooting on dramedy begin in September and ended around the festival’s final submission date. A finalist for some coin support via the Sffs / Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grant, this stars Cobie Smulders (pictured above – Cap. America pic) in the lead role. Chances are slim, but we’re keeping tabs on it.

The night before the 2014 Oscars was a big one for 12 Years a Slave as it took home five wins at the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards including Best Picture, Director (Steve McQueen), Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o), Screenplay (John Ridley) and Cinematography (Sean Bobbitt). However, don't take this to mean 12 Years is a lock at the Oscars as its strongest competition in categories such as Picture and Director, those being Gravity and American Hustle, weren't among the "independent" nominees. Some likely Oscar winners were among the list of winners as Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto took home Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively. Cate Blanchett took home yet another Best Actress prize for her work in Blue Jasmine and 20 Feet from Stardom won Best Documentary, proving even the Spirit Awards weren't going for The Act of Killing, though that doesn't diminish the impact of Joshua Oppenheimer's film. Some...

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave pulled a five finger discount at the 2014 Indie Spirit Awards grabbing hardware in the Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography categories. Apart from the larceny in the Best Doc category, the winners in the above mention category (excluding Bobbitt’s work) and the double win pairing of Leto and McConaughey along with Cate Blanchett’s perf win in Blue Jasmine will likely repeat itself less than 24 hours later at tomorrow’s Academy Awards celebrations obviously begging many to ponder the following: who needs the 86th Academy Awards when we have the Indie Spirit Awards? While today’s most pleasurable wins come from the truly indie kudos for Best First Feature (Ryan Coogler for Frutivale Station) the John Cassavetes award for Chad Hartigan’s This is Martin Bonner, and the Piaget Producers Award to Ain’t Them Bodies Saints...

Deceptively marketed as a breezy romantic comedy, Drinking Buddies would be more aptly described as a movie about the complexities and compromises of relationships, the little things that are instrumental in making partnerships work. Credit writer-director Joe Swanberg for giving his strong cast the freedom to explore the weighty ideas his film’s simple set-up brings bubbling to the surface, like infidelity, loneliness and immaturity.
As Drinking Buddies opens, we think we know where it’s headed. The flighty, frivolous Kate (Olivia Wilde) works in a Chicago brewery with Luke (Jake Johnson), her emotional equal in every way. They get through the daily grind by immaturely drinking, flirting and reveling in the potent will-they-won’t-they chemistry that they’ve constructed almost effortlessly. The only problem: both are already in relationships. Luke is on the verge of marrying Jill (Anna Kendrick), his attentive and gracious girlfriend of six years, while Kate...

Steve McQueen's acclaimed drama tops nominations in the annual awards ceremony celebrating lower-budget movies, while Nebraska and Short Term 12 also perform well
Its criteria of a budget less than $15m rules out the likes of Gravity, but it was still always likely 12 Years a Slave - Steve McQueen's acclaimed drama set in 1840s Louisiana - would sweep the board at the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards. The film ended up with seven nominations, including nods for feature, director and actors Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong'o and Michael Fassbender.
Coming in second was Alexander Payne's Nebraska, with six, followed by Jc Chandor's All Is Lost with four. Inside Llewyn Davis, Short Term 12, Fruitvale Station and Blue Jasmine all took three.
The lead actor category was expanded to six nominees from the usual five, and James Gandolfini is up for a posthumous supporting prize for Enough Said.

Team Fox Searchlight should be returning to the winner’s circle at the next edition of the Indie Spirits awards. After winning with Black Swan three years back, and losing out in the Best Feature category with Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Descendants, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave leads all other films with seven nominations Best Feature, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and three of the four acting categories. Alexander Payne’s Nebraska follows with six noms. Both Sundance (Fruitvale Station) and SXSW (Short Term 12) winners figure among the noms, but they weren’t as plentiful with only three noms a piece. Among our favorite titles for 2013 which were left off the scorecard, David Lowery’s Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Andrew Dosunmu’s Mother of George Saints got no recognition, while Eliza Hittman’s It Felt Like Love would have got my vote for the Annual Someone To Watch Award.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave is in contention for seven Spirit Awards followed closely by Alexander Payne’s Nebraska on six as Film Independent top brass announced nominees on November 26.
McQueen earned a director nomination and will compete against Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Jc Chandor for All Is Lost, Jeff Nichols for Mud and Share Carruth for Upstream Color.
Not surprisingly given the strength and depth of this awards season, the categories are strong across the board.
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty is among a mighty crop of international contenders that includes Abdellatif Kechiche’s Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Colour, Sebastian Lelio’s Gloria, Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt and A Touch Of Sin from China’s Jia Zhang-Ke.

The 2014 Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced this morning and it was a big day for 12 Years a Slave leading the way with seven nominations followed by Alexander Payne's Nebraska with six and All is Lost with four. Those three films were joined by Fruitvale Station and Frances Ha in the Best Feature category as I felt the nominations were nicely spread around with very worthy titles getting attention. I didn't notice too many surprises and Short Term 12 certainly had a nice showing with three nominations including noms for both Brie Larson and Keith Stanfield. I love seeing the nomination for Melonie Diaz for Fruitvale Station as it seems Octavia Spencer is going to get most of the Oscar attention for that film despite the fact Diaz is the more deserving of the two. I guess if you did want to say there was a surprise I would...

I imagine it has paid dividends as after years of micro-budget productions, the filmmaker’s latest features Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston and the ace talent of Beasts of the Southern Wild Cinematographer Ben Richardson.
Gist: Drinking Buddies is the story of what happens when the worlds of home life and work-buddy camaraderie collide. Luke and Kate are two beer geeks in a Chicago brewery. Inseparable on the job, the two share everything from...

Sunlight Jr.
Director/Writer: Laurie Collyer
Producer(s): Charlie Corwin, Ariel Elia and Andrea Roa
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Naomi Watts, Norman Reedus, Matt Dillon
As I’ve mentioned before, it’s been a half more than a decade since Collyer broke out with her micro-budgeted Sherrybaby and we’ve been waiting for her her second fictional feature ever since. The trio of players (Norman Reedus, Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon) could pan out some ripe results.
Gist: Melissa Winters (Naomi Watts) works as a cashier in a convenience store. It’s a dead end job, one dollar above minimum wage, but it’s as good as she can get. Her boyfriend, Richie Barnes (Matt Dillon) is permanently disabled from a motorcycle accident he had years ago. A former television repair man, Richie now lives month to month on a government disability check. He would love to get a real job,...

Half a dozen years since she first broke out at Sundance with the micro-budgeted Sherrybaby (Sundance ’05) which still stands as Maggie Gyllenhaal’s most raw performance to date, Laurie Collyer finally returns with her sophomore fiction project, her third film when you include her docu Nuyorican Dream (Sundance ’00). With the of trio of players of Norman Reedus, Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon (see collage above from set), Sunlight Jr. is perhaps the most readied film among our predictions set – as filming began in Florida back all the way back in November of 2011. Tech folk includes cinematographer Igor Martinovic and Production Designer Jade Healy.
Gist: Sunlight Jr. is a love story set in the ruins of the American dream. Melissa is a convenience store clerk who lives in a motel with her paraplegic boyfriend, Richie. When they learn they are going to have a baby, they are genuinely excited. But when...

This 2.5 films per year filmmaker was a SXSW favorite up until he was first included in the Sundance family with Uncle Kent (Sundance ’11) and V/H/S (Sundance ’12) the following year. Undoubtedly, Drinking Buddies, which lensed in July and has been in post-prod since August is perhaps sometimes actor (see pic with A Horrible Way to Die) Joe Swanberg’s best packaged film with Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston toplining. Andrea Roa and Alicia Van Couvering are part of the producing team and this is officially Cinematographer Ben Richardson’s first project after Beasts of the Southern Wild.

It wouldn’t be a Scary Movie without some attention-grabbing cameos, and the upcoming fifth installment of the franchise may be getting just that. Set to star High School Musical‘s Ashley Tisdale in a Black Swan-esque spoof, Scary Movie 5 is gearing up for production with Malcolm D. Lee (Undercover Brother) behind the camera and now according to new reports one frequent tabloider who is attempting a career restart is in talks.
Despite some denials, The Wrap reports that Lindsay Lohan has entered talks to join the film, presumably in a small cameo role akin to others like Carmen Electra, Charlie Sheen and Pamela Anderson in past films. With that plot synopsis, I wonder if Lohan would take a role akin to the on Mila Kunis had in Darren Aronofsky‘s film. It won’t take long to find out, as the film is set to hit theaters...
