The first trailer for Gareth Edwards' Godzilla landed yesterday. We take a closer look at its finer details...
Next year marks the 60th birthday of Godzilla, Japan's most famous giant monster. The star of around 30 increasingly outlandish movies, a 1998 Us remake, a cartoon series and a mountain of merchandise, it's easy to forget that Gojira (to give him his original Japanese name) wasn't conceived as a familiar figure of fun, but a city-levelling creature to be feared.
Director Gareth Edwards stated some time ago that he intended to reinstate Godzilla's power to inspire a sense of fear and awe in his forthcoming reboot, timed to coincide with the grand Kaiju's birthday next year. And it's clear from the first few seconds of the film's new trailer that Edwards has already gone some way towards achieving that.

AICN caught up with Elizabeth Olsen and asked her about her spate of upcoming movie roles -- some of which, as we well know here on Cbm, are pretty big to say the least. The Scarlet Witch stuff has been covered before, but Olsen also discusses her part in the upcoming Godzilla remake. We already knew that she'd be playing the wife of Aaron Taylor Johnson's main protagonist, but here she reveals a little bit more about both his character and her own. When asked what we can expect from the movie and if it'll be simply a case of "actors running away and pointing at something in the sky for two hours", she responds: "I do that once. It’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s film, but the ensemble, we all are somehow connected to Aaron’s character. He’s the root, and I play his wife and I'm the...

Over the summer, word surfaced that Marvel was courting Aaron Taylor-Johnson and then Elizabeth Olsen to join their Cinematic Universe. Joss Whedon’s hugely anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron was in need of a Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and they were the two in contention for the parts.
For months, it’s been expected that they had joined the project, and all that was left was the crossing and dotting of ts and is. Now it looks like we weren’t wrong, with the studio officially confirming the two for the sibling roles.
It won’t be the first time that Taylor-Johnson and Olsen will be starring alongside each other, with both appearing in Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, due out in May 2014. (Another reason to look forward to Edwards’ similarly anticipated blockbuster, as if we needed one.)

We've already known for awhile that Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen have been cast in Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron. But today Marvel made it official with a press release announcing that they will be playing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, respectively. Johnson and Olsen are both great actors, and I think they are going to be fantastic in the movie! I wonder how many films they signed on for.
Here's the press release:
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen have officially joined the Avengers family as the brother-sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the highly-anticipated sequel to 2012's smash-hit "Marvel's The Avengers"! It may have been the worst kept Cbm secret out there, but now we know -- officially -- that Elizabeth Olsen will play Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. The actress revealed as much to MTV while talking about working with Aaron Taylor Johnson (who will play Quicksilver) once again after starring alongside him in Godzilla. "It's also fun because even though in 'Godzilla' we play husband and wife, we don't have a lot of scenes together. I just love him. I love his family. I love his kids. I'm so excited...to actually work with each other. I think it's going to be fun." Olsen also took the time to compliment her soon-to-be director, Joss Whedon. "He's very smart.

Fears over fan attention rather than scheduling conflict now cited as reason for departure of Sons of Anarchy star from Sam Taylor-Johnson's erotic adaptation

He played an inept imitation of a super hero in Kick-Ass but now Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be portraying a more formidable hero when he takes on the role of mutant speedster Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Aaron Taylor Johnson, who starred in Kick-Ass (2010) and its sequel Kick-Ass 2 (2013) has been rumored to have been in negotiations to play Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron for months now. It’s finally been made official that Taylor has joined the cast as the silver-haired speedster. This comes right on the heels of the semi-confirmation (by Samuel L. Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: My thoughts on Kick-Ass 2 lead to a discussion of two Postmodern Superhero Movies.
I’m going to apply Wikipedia in a way this week that I don’t suggest you do in your personal life if you have access to someone or something that can discuss Post-Modernism with you. There’s going to be some stuff that’s kind of hard to understand because: 1) it just is and 2) it’s written by an online collection of strangers, But – in contrast – we’re going to be talking about this week’s Kick Ass 2. We’re mixing high and low brow art, and – Hey! – that’s one of our criteria, but I digress…

We’re mixing high and low brow art, and – Hey! – that’s one of our criteria, but I digress…
Last September, I briefly got my mitts on a draft of Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2 script.

The hero and villain of Kick-Ass 2, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Christopher Mint-Plasse, chat to us about returning for this summer's sequel...
Has any summer movie harvested quite as many actors with double-barrelled or otherwise lengthy names as Kick-Ass 2? Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Chloe Grace Moretz. All we can say is, after typing up all these set visits and interviews, our fingers are considerably more stumpy than they were before.
Anyway, late last year, as part of our wander around the set of Kick-Ass 2, we got to enjoy a brief, round-table chat with the hero and villain of the piece, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Well, we call it a round-table interview - there wasn't a table at all. The interview took place with about eight or so journalists (including your humble writer from Den Of Geek) on an area of hardstanding just...

Aaron Taylor Johnson has begun to open up a bit about his potential casting as Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver in Marvel's The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, but in this interview with Bleeding Cool the young actor gets pretty in-depth about it. He's already revealed that he's met with Marvel and director Joss Whedon, but now he confirms that he has indeed been offered the role and discusses the character and his place in the team. It sounds like Johnson is waiting to see how much meat Whedon will put on Quicksilver's bones before committing to play him. "Firstly, I’m flattered to have been offered to be one of The Avengers. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best fucking compliments you can have, to be part of that gang, for sure. For me, it’s always about character, so if you haven’t got the basis of something...

The Godzilla filmmaker and cast attended Comic Con this year revealing the revamped Godzilla movie will be an origins story and two other monsters will wreak havoc as well. Plus new images of the beloved Japanese monster reveal a much bigger entity that will be hard to kill.
No one need tell us that destruction will be part of the action in the new Godzilla, but what else did director Gareth Williams reveal about the upcoming monster movie? Director Gareth Williams, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen attended the press panel at Comic Con and they let loose some but not a lot of juicy details. Based on the Japanese film monster, Godzilla 2014 is another chance to make up for the disastrous 1998 English-language film by the same name starring Matthew

On tap right now is a footage description from Legendary Pictures' Godzilla panel in Hall H which was monstrously packed today for the event. We'll keep an eye out for the goods should it hit online or be emailed to us.
“We’re introduced to characters first off: Cranston seems to be an engineer/investigator of some sort — we see him in hazmat gear, and later running towards a crisis event in a government installation as the rest of the staff frantically runs away. Aaron Taylor Johnson is a soldier; Ken Watanabe is seen in a control room of some kind, and Olsen as mentioned above is shown in moments that suggest she’s been a victim of some disaster. A montage of various images shows a world in crisis and deploying military forces to fight some crisis moment.

Universal Pictures held their panel at San Diego Comic Con yesterday where their late Summer/early Fall releases "Riddick" and "Kick-Ass 2" were showcased.
Actors Aaron Taylor Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lindy Booth, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo and director Jeff Wadlow were on hand to talk about how dark and intense the upcoming "Kick Ass" sequel is, though it doesn't include the darkest scenes of the comic (the dog killing and rape scenes).
Chloe Grace Moretz also appeared via satellite and spoke about her character arc, while talk of a third film was quashed as those involved sound like they are so exhausted from the shoot they can't consider it at this point. The juiciest bit though is the Nsfw trailer which has already gone online:
Taylor-Johnson also briefly spoke about his role of Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver in "The Avengers 2:

One highlight of Friday's (July 19) "Kick-Ass 2" presentation at 2013 Comic-Con? A new four-and-a-half minute red-band trailer that was released following the panel.
Stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and (via satellite) Chloe Grace Moretz were on hand at Comic-Con to present a cleaner sneak peek at the film -- a trailer with around 300 fewer curse words, according to Johnson. One star not present? New addition Jim Carrey, who's been vocal in his new-found opposition to the film's violence as of late.
Take a look at the (again, Nswf) trailer and let us know if you're looking forward to "Kick-Ass 2" when it comes out on Aug. 16.

Universal Pictures' Friday panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2013 covered two upcoming sequels: "Riddick" and "Kick-Ass 2."
"Kick-Ass 2" appeared first, with Christopher Mintz-Plasse (The Mother F***er), Aaron Taylor Johnson (Kick-Ass), and newcomers to the series Lindy Booth (Night B****), Donald Faison (Dr. Gravity), and John Leguizamo (Javier) taking the stage.
Screenwriter Jeff Wadlow and "Kick-Ass" comics writers Mark Miller and John Romita, Jr. were there as well, and Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl) even joined via satellite. The main cast members' arrivals were accompanied by a video that spliced together footage from the original film with new shots from the sequel.
"This is a blast," Romita says of making the film and being at Comic-Con.
"Kick-Ass 2" will depict the possibly epic battle between Mintz-Plasse's villainous character and those played by Moretz and Johnson. The sides of good and evil form their own eccentric teams, "The Mother F***er...

The sequel to "Kick-Ass" promises to be dark, intense, hyper-violent, sexual and, according to the director, "not a Marvel movie." No offense, Marvel. "This is not a rinse and repeat sequel," said director Jeff Wadlow, at a panel at the Comic-Con fan convention in San Diego on Friday. "We put them through the meat grinder." Universal just finished up the Comic-Con panel for Kick-Ass 2, and while this is certainly the place for exclusive footage, in this case, the Internet wins. A new four-minute trailer just debuted here in Hall H, but director Jeff Wadlow told the crowd that the red band trailer arriving online would be a much more violent, and profanity laden trailer, and he wasn't lying. There's some hard hits, blood splashing and plenty of naughty words from Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jim Carrey, plus some cool moments for John Leguizamo, Donald Faison and more new cast members. This is going to be wild. Here's the new red band trailer for Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2 from the film's YouTube channel: Chloe Moretz appeared via satellite at the panel and it sounds like Hit-Girl has the heart of the theme in this film as she struggles with her identity...

Kick-Ass 2 has unveiled a new international poster.
The artwork shows the stars of the film together in their superhero costumes.
Aaron Taylor Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will return alongside newcomer Jim Carrey.
Based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's second miniseries, the movie sees Dave Lizewski (Taylor-Johnson) join forces with a group of civilian vigilantes to fight Mintz-Plasse's increasingly powerful The Motherf**ker.
John Leguizamo, Donald Faison, Robert Emms, Lindy Booth and Daniel Kaluuya will also feature in the Jeff Wadlow-directed sequel.
Moretz recently addressed her young character's controversially profane language in the films.
Kick-Ass 2 will be released on August 14 in the UK, and August 16 in the Us.
Watch a trailer below:...

And to prove it here's a new international poster for the film. This time, of course, Aaron Taylor Johnson's Kick-Ass / Dave Lizewski has teamed up with a group of other would-be superheroes in costume, led by Colonel Stars-And-Stripes (Jim Carrey). Meanwhile, Chloe Grace Moretz' Hit Girl is attempting to adjust to normal life as teenager Mindy MacReady with mixed results, and they're all threatened by Christopher Mintz-Plasse's former Red Mist, now rechristened The Mother Fucker and set on revenge.Kick-Ass 2 also stars Clark Duke, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, Morris Chestnut and Lyndsy Fonseca, and hits UK cinemas on August 14 and the Us on August 16. It makes sense that someone might want Aaron Taylor Johnson to take on a superhero role for a major comic film. He's had plenty of time as Kick-ass so it's not like he would need to prepare. Well, he will have to slip into a different personality than Dave Lizewski. Johnson is being eyed to play Quicksilver in The Avengers 2. At least he's got that whiny thing down. Dave did was kind of a bitch at times. It may not even be happening though. There are some issues involving the schedule but...

For a while there it was Guardians of the Galaxy that seemed to be summoning every single white, young, brown-haired actor to potentially play the male lead. Now it's the Godzilla reboot-- and both of them have apparently been turned down by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Today it's Aaron Taylor Johnson's turn to be thrown into the rumor mill, with word coming that he's now the top pick from studio Legendary Pictures. That doesn't mean he's take the job though-- according to Deadline Johnson is waiting on a final draft of the script, which is currently being reworked by former Walking Dead show runner Frank Darabont. There's been a ton of information out there about Godzilla in the last few days, and not all of it good; two of the producers have left the project, and word leaked out yesterday that the story is more focused on the lead human character,...

Exclusive: Legendary Pictures is eyeing Kick-Ass star Aaron-Taylor Johnson to star in Godzilla, the Gareth Edwards-directed reboot of the franchise based on the iconic Japanese reptile. I’m told that Johnson, who starred in the Oliver Stone-directed Savages and Anna Karenina and followed by reprising in Kick-Ass 2: Balls To The Wall is the frontrunner for the job. He won’t make a final decision on whether or not to take the offer until he sees the final polish that Frank Darabont is writing based on the Max Borenstein script. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are taking the creative lead on this project — they just put Mary Parent on after she became a producer of Pacific Rim — and Warner Bros is distributing everywhere except for Japan. There, rightsholders Toho will handle the release. While there has obviously been a legal dust-up in the producing ranks,...

Remember that moving, tragi-comic film about a real-life, ordinary people-turned-superheroes, Kick-Ass? We reported a while ago that there’s a follow-up coming, and now we have another image from the Kick-Ass 2 convenience store set. This is the same store that we saw The Mother F*cker (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) attempt to rob but was ultimately unsuccessful.
The next two images are of the cemetery set being put together at the UK studio. Anyone that has read Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.’s comic book will easily recognize the importance of that set.
The last set of photos are behind-the-scenes shots of Donald Faison (Dr. Gravity) working out with his co-star Olga Kurkulina (Mother Russia).

But takings weren't just modest for this charming animation as a batch of medium-sized movies all competed for attention
The winner
It was the unsung hero the previous weekend, knocked into second place thanks to The Sweeney having its tally inflated by two days of preview takings, and now it's enjoying its moment in the spotlight: ParaNorman is the UK's top box-office hit.
The stop-motion animation does so, however, with a relatively lacklustre number: £1.22m. Only three films so far this year have topped the chart with lower weekend takings. ParaNorman fell just 12% from the previous weekend, the smallest dip of any title in the top 10. It was the only picture in the market to clear £1m.
The chasing pack
Not exactly untypically for this point in the film calendar, there's a large number of medium-sized movies vying for cinemagoers' attention, but little in the way of breakout hits. Only...
