My first concert ever was Sarah McLachlan at Radio City Music Hall in 1995. The Canadian singer-songwriter was on tour in support of her U.S. breakthrough, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and had enlisted a then-unknown artist, Paula Cole, as the opening act despite protests from tour promoters, who claimed nobody would pay to see two women.
Of course, they were mistaken, and a few years later, McLachlan helped reimagine the touring music festival with the all-female Lilith Fair. She continues her mission to share the spotlight with other female artists on her latest trek, in celebration of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’s 30th anniversary, with fellow Canadian Leslie Feist warming up the audience at the Hollywood Bowl last night as the marine layer rolled in and the temperature dropped.
After opening with a mini-set of popular hits and fan favorites from subsequent releases, McLachlan launched into a track-by-track performance of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Beck has dropped out of supporting Arcade Fire’s US tour just six weeks after Feist quit the European leg.
The musician did not cite any reasons for quitting his role as the band’s supporting act, unlike Feist who released a statement about the allegations facing Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler.
In an email sent to ticket buyers (via Variety), Beck was described only as “unfortunately no longer able to join Arcade Fire on their upcoming North American tour. Taking his place will be Boukman Eksperyans.”
He was due to support the band from 27 October for 18 concerts ending in Toronto on 1 December.
The Independent has contacted Beck’s representatives for comments.
Four accusers have spoken out against the musician, accusing him of sexual misconduct between 2015 and 2020.
Butler denies the allegations but has apologised “to anyone who I have hurt with my behaviour”.

Will Butler, former Arcade Fire musician and brother of the band’s frontman Win Butler, has liked a post by Feist announcing that she will no longer support the group on its current tour.
Leslie Feist – who performs under her surname – shared the news on Twitter on Thursday (1 September), citing sexual misconduct allegations faced by Arcade Fire’s Win as the reason behind her decision.
Win has denied the allegations but has apologised “to anyone who I have hurt with my behaviour”.
In a series of tweets posted in March this year, Will had announced that he had left the band at the end of 2021, saying that it was “time for new things” and that the band remain his “friends and family”.
“Hi friends— I’ve left Arcade Fire,” he wrote. “I left at the end of last year, after the new record was complete. There was no acute reason...

A new mini-documentary explores the making of Leonard Cohen’s posthumous album Thanks For the Dance, out Friday.
“When my father saw the success of You Want It Darker right before he passed, he asked me, ‘Complete the task. Finish the songs that we started,'” Leonard’s son Adam says in The Story of Thanks For the Dance.
The posthumous album features vocal recordings Cohen made prior to his 2016 death — including some leftover material from You Want It Darker — alongside guests like Beck, Leslie Feist, Damien Rice, Daniel Lanois,...

Leonard Cohen wrote and recorded until near his final breaths — the work, it was understood, was keeping him alive. Arriving three years after his death, Thanks for the Dance is a surprise, a sort of séance as shiva, a magnificent parting shot that’s also that exceptionally rare thing — a posthumous work as alive, challenging, and essential as anything issued in the artist’s lifetime.
Completed by his son and collaborator, Adam Cohen, it can be considered of a piece with You Want It Darker, issued just before his father...

New music from an unexpected source, a problem with tickets to a Black Keys show, and technology bringing us a mobile karaoke feature and the return of high-fidelity to streaming services were some of the highlights of the week.
We also saw yet another superstar depart the big stage, as Ric Ocasek of The Cars died in his Manhattan home, leaving behind an impressive legacy.
This week in music:
How Old Was Ric? Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and the mastermind behind The Cars died last Sunday. Ric Ocasek leaves behind a considerable catalog of great music and one mysterious question – how old was he? Some obits said age 70, others 75. There’s considerable differences of opinion among various media, but extensive research by the New York Times finally pegged him as 75 years old at the time of death.
Music Center Problems: It was not a good month at the Music Center.

Ahead of their July tour dates, Broken Social Scene stopped by CBS This Morning to perform songs from their 2019 EPs Let’s Try the After Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.
The Canadian indie rock band, which fluctuates in size from six to 19 members, delivered a thrilling rendition of “Can’t Find My Heart,” followed by the dreamy “1972” and the explosive post-rock track “Remember Me Young.”

Earlier this spring, the ragtag group of Canadian indie-rock lifers and unapologetic idealists known as Broken Social Scene made their way from Toronto to Austin, Texas, to perform eight shows in less than one week. “We didn’t have our gear for the first few shows,” says Kevin Drew, the 17-member band’s de facto frontman. “It was a clusterfuck, and it was an absolute joy.”

Beck recorded an ornate cover of Colourbox’s “Tarantula,” a song later made famous by This Mortal Coil, for his contribution to a compilation of songs inspired by Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-nominated film Roma. The song is a slow build, as orchestral strings and piano provide a moody bed for Beck’s reverb-saturated vocals; eventually, percussion joins in for a big outro. Leslie Feist and Alex Lilly contributed backing vocals to the recording.

It is a well-established fact that as a high schooler in El Paso, Texas, Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-tx) was in a band, Foss — ::pauses to take giant bong rip:: It’s Icelandic for ‘waterfall’ — with Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who would go on to considerable fame fronting the Mars Volta and At the Drive-In. Jenny Lewis successfully transitioned from child star of Jell-o commercials and Troop Beverly Hills to indie musician, and she's pretty at ease with her past, telling People in 2014 that she's "thrilled that I was a part of something that has endured the test of time." (She was talking about the movie, not the Jell-o commercial.)
Thrilled enough to combine her past and present in her new video for "She's Not Me," the second single off last year's The Voyager. Much like her video for "Just One of the Guys," the album's first single, it's a playful, winking clip, only this time,...

Stephen Colbert hasn't been just formidable as an interviewer on Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," he has been altogether intimidating as a host. His conservative pundit persona allowed for his line of questioning to guests in a skit or an interview to be more extreme and pressing, and for his follow-ups to either make fun of the subject or make fun of himself. It's a style and experience that will obviously serve Colbert well at his next gig -- behind the desk at "The Late Show..." -- but the length of "Colbert" plus the host's ability to transition between parody comedy to a sincere interrogation always kept the show's guests on their toes, even when their bits were scripted. The "Report" frequently featured its host singing and dancing, and on a metaphorical level, all the guest could (or had to) do was keep up. With "The Colbert Report" coming to a close tonight (Dec.

Sesame Street might not be as shmancy as, say, the Meatpacking District circa "Sex and the City," but it has its fair share of hip visitors.
The latest "Sesame Street" music video features the wondrous Janelle Monáe, and it's just what you need on a Friday afternoon. Bert's bumming, Cookie Monster is burning his snacks, Big Bird can't dunk a basketball, and the Two-Headed Monster can't seem to find the beat. It's easy to be discouraged, but just as they're all about to toss in the towel, Monáe appears in a stylin' tuxedo to teach them about "The Power of Yet." It's catchy, groovy, and completely adorable - and the perfect song to go with the 45th anniversary of the long-running show!

Unfortunately for Benedict Cumberbatch, the star of hit BBC series Sherlock, there's no shortage of foes wanting to test his super sleuthing skills, and that includes the Muppets of Sesame Street.
In a new clip from the children's show, Murray Monster, now known as Murray-arty, puts Cumberbatch on the spot, and asks him to deduce whether there are more apples or oranges. Much like his onscreen counterpart, the Brit turns to a good friend for help – no, not Dr. Watson – the Count.
The spot-on parody of the actor's turn as Sherlock Holmes is the latest foray for the long-running series into pop culture.

Cookie Monster, the ever-gluttonous star of "Sesame Street," recently covered Icona Pop's breakout single "I Love It" in a parody called 'Me Want It.' While Cookie Monster's version is as adorable as all get out -- and the Swedish electro-pop duo are pretty cute, too -- it still may seem like an unlikely pairing, albeit with perhaps a more appropriate source song than their Lmfao parody "I'm Elmo And I Know It."
But these covers actually fit pretty well within the "Sesame Street" tradition of incorporating songs into the show regardless of whether their music is aimed at the knee-high set or not. And even better than the puppet parodies are the ones that ones where the singers and musicians come to the actual set.

I was excited to write up my reactions to the just released Breaking Dawn Part 2 soundtrack listing, because I truly love the previous soundtracks from the franchise and think Music Supervisor Alex Patsavas always does a killer job cultivating tracks that suit each film’s mood. However, I know that my deep entrenchment in the Twilight fandom might make my opinion a little biased. Yes, I drink out of a giant Twilight cup and can identify every pair of Kristen Stewart‘s sneakers out of a shoe lineup, so my thoughts are certainly tainted by years of Twi-obsession. So take these silly, quick comments with a couple grains of salt, okay? They’re my unedited, unresearched, immediate reactions. Besides, we all know this soundtrack could be made up solely of songs by The Wiggles and I’d still love it.

Looks like "The Twilight Saga" soundtrack series is closing on a bloody colorful note.
Leading up the final installment — "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" — is five-time Grammy-winning rock band Green Day, Yahoo! Movies has announced.
The band's bassist, Mike Dirnt, said "When we were asked to be part of the 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn - Part 2' soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the 'Twilight' soundtracks are so carefully curated."
Some familiar names join the track-list for the last picture's music accompaniment, including "Breaking Dawn - Part 1" artist Christina Perri. She teased that fans'll not be getting a repeat of her gold-certified "A Thousand Years," though. "It's not the same [as the original]... you'll just have to wait and see how," she said.

It's too hot anyway, right? Cool down with this silky, chilly start to your weekend: Feist's "Anti-Hero" music video. The Canadian songwriter is cloaked in shadows and gripping the lines on wallpaper for her "sappy songs about what went wrong." The simple black and white clip was helmed by Martin de Thurah, whose work previously with Leslie Feist exposed an acumen for the melacholy. "The Bad in Each Other" broke my heart in 12 different ways. In "Anti-Hero," they together kind of show off what a broken heart does when its listlessly broken. Of this new clip, de Thurah told Nowness...

“Little Broken Hearts,” the new album out yesterday by the talented singer-composer Norah Jones, is alleged to be different than her previous recordings, which may not be a good thing: Ms. Jones has yet to make a bad album. What’s changed here isn’t the quality – on balance, a middling production by Danger Mouse does little harm – but her point of view, according to some critics and her record label,...

Last week we reported about the unlikely fan friendship between the metalheads of Mastodon and singer-songwriter Feist. The Mastodon crew were smitten with Feist after seeing her perform just two songs on UK talk show "Later with Jools Holland" before they took the stage themselves, and after she heard they were planning to cover one of her songs, she decided to do the same with one of theirs in honor of Record Store Day, which goes down tomorrow (April 21).
Each gave the other complete creative freedom with their respective covers. Feist chose to record a rendition of "Black Tongue" from Mastodon’s latest effort The Hunter and the band took on Feist’s "A Commotion."
"It's a wet dream to have Mastodon take one of my songs and put it into their massive machine," Feist said of the mutual cover lovefest. Meanwhile, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher told Rolling Stone, "We...

Record Store Day has seen a resurgence in popularity over the last few years thanks to the rising interest in purchasing albums on vinyl, and this year’s split 7” release from Mastodon and Feist marks one of the craziest releases we’ve ever heard.
The metalheads of the Mastodon crew were first smitten with Feist when they witnessed her perform just two songs on UK talk show “Later with Jools Holland” before they took the stage themselves.
"They were great," guitarist Bill Kelliher told Rolling Stone. "We thought, 'Why don't we see if they want to collaborate somehow, someway?" which is how the project came to light.
It wasn’t until Feist saw an MTV Canada interview that she found out about Mastodon’s plans. "Next thing I know, they had announced on MTV that they were gonna cover a song [of mine]," she recalled – deciding to return the favor.

It's not often you see a music video without the singer in it. But for Feist's latest Metals video, "Bittersweet Melodies," director Hollie Singer ignored Leslie Feist entirely, focusing instead on the many subjects of Argentine photographer Irina Werning's uncanny Back To The Future project. If you've already seen Werning's work, the video is more or less a straight retread. But the collection of old photographs recreated anew by the people who were in them (including one of Billy Bragg and his old punk band Riff Raff re-staging a bus ride) with Feist's nostalgic lyrics makes for a perfectly lovely, vaguely sad pairing. Check out the video below, which is Nsfw due to the grown-up counterparts to shirtless little girls, and head to Werning's site for more Back To The Future photos.

Toronto -- Indie-rock songstress Leslie Feist took home a Juno for Artist of the Year on Sunday night, and jazz crooner Michael Buble's holiday-themed "Christmas" claimed the prize for Album of the Year at the 41st annual Canadian music awards ceremony.
Feist, best known for her whimsical 2007 song "1234," which became an international hit after it was featured in an iPod nano commercial, might have surprised some with Sunday night's win since her contemplative fourth disc, "Metals," wasn't nominated for Album of the Year.
Feist's big win brought her Juno tally to three for the weekend, and 11 for her career.
"I just need a second," she marveled as she stepped to the microphone, shaking her head from side to side, looking stunned, as well as stunning in a red, lace dress.
"I'm just in shock. ... I guess all I can really do is try to express some genuine gratitude. I can't believe I'm standing here.

Feeling Feisty? You should be, because, just like that, this summer got much cooler with the promise of Leslie Feist gracing stages worldwide—including at many festivals (Pitchfork, anyone?) and other rites of the season. The just-announced summer dates, with a stop in Indy on April 30, are a continuation of Feist’s tour supporting her critically acclaimed and frequently purchased fourth album, Metals. That, in conjunction with her making an appearance on the The Muppets, leaves us wondering what she next has up her kickass sleeves. Tour dates include: March 21—Le Zenith—Paris, France March 22—Transbordeur—Lyon ...

Her new song is called “I F—ed Up.” You can listen to it and most of her new album, called “Mdna” on her You Tube channel and on Facebook. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkgEJPSWRZY&feature=player_embedded#!. The album comes out a week from Tuesday, and it’s the usual hodgepodge of throwaway dance songs and a couple of ballads that have been Auto-tuned within an inch of their lives. Madonna is almost 54 and she sings, basically, about nothing. There’s no one to compare her to, really; she is unto herself. You can’t compare her to the great female singer songwriters like Carly, Carole, and Joni. She’s not a great singer like Judy Collins, Phoebe Snow, or Gladys Knight. She’s not an icon like Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, or Aretha Franklin.

Well Lucas Scott came and went, and most people are not happy about it. We reviewed all that went on in "Last Known Surroundings" on Wednesday.
Now it is time for our panel of Miranda Wicker, Brian Shure, and Nick McHatton to discuss the disappointing Lucas return, Nathan's kidnappers, and more in the latest installment of the One Tree Hill Round Table.
Read their answers below, and then add your own in the comments!
---------------------------------
What was your favorite thing about the return of Lucas Scott?
Miranda: I think the best thing about the return of Lucas Scott was actually the music track playing as he came walking through the airport and reunited with Haley. The line "bring them all back to life" from the Feist song "Graveyard" was perfectly timed and integrated for what could have been a great reintroduction of an old character but which ultimately fell flat for me.

On last night's episode, Grey's Anatomy tackled some characteristically heavy topics, with infidelity, Alzheimer's and the doctors' skills being called into question in an installment that set up arcs for this spring.
As always, this week's show delivered a few choice songs, all timed to coincide with a series of events that gave viewers plenty to discuss, as the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack has since the very first episode.
We've posted the from "Have You Seen Me Lately" below and in our Grey's Anatomy music section:

Man, nothing breaks your heart like seeing somebody bury their dead dog. That's how Feist's "The Bad In Each Other" starts out. Celebrations situations go sour, family relationships are hurt by jealousy, a one-night-stand gets to the sad part: examples of people bringing out "the worst in each other." This high-tension song pairs sweetness with noise, and God love that bari sax because it feels like everything is crumbling by the end. Quoth Leslie Feist, via her website: This video captures glimpses of something human, we get a peek inside something real between people - could be loss, longing and love....

Don't say we didn't warn you. Looks like Mastodon is up for a little collaboration magic with Feist, and are planning to release a split 7" record with the Canadian singer-songwriter for Record Store Day next year. MTV Canada caught up with bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, who said they were going to try and knock out recording one of her songs -- throw a little "hair and dirt on it" -- in the month of December in time for the indie record retailer holiday. In our interview last month, Leslie Feist had told me she and Mastodon had created a little mutual appreciation...
