Hollywood is obviously hellbent on adapting every last one of Stephen King’s stories to big and small screens. The prolific author might find himself struggling to keep up with moviemakers at one point, drowning in Carrie remakes of varying quality… And if you think we’re kidding, you’re only halfway right, because we have some news.
Apparently, one of the least famous King stories is also making its way to the screen, and we’re honestly not sure if it even can be properly adapted — or if it should.
Another Obscure King Adaptation Emerges
Primarily known for his 2020 horror take on Gretel & Hansel, Osgood Perkins is ready to present his first attempt at adapting a Stephen King story. To the director’s honor, he chose quite an unknown and overlooked novella from the King of Horror’s vast library — his personal twist on the infamous “possessed doll” horror trope.

The trailer for Longlegs, Nicolas Cage’s new horror movie, makes it looks like a serial killer film. Interestingly, Cage compared the film to a character from Pinocchio. However, the film was directed by the son of a horror movie legend.
Nicolas Cage said ‘Longlegs’ is about ‘a possessed Geppetto’
Anthony Perkins was a talented actor who appeared in numerous films and television shows, but he will always be most remembered for playing Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Bates was one of the first realistic serial killers to be portrayed onscreen in an American movie. Perkins would reprise the role in three sequels. His son, Oz Perkins, is now a horror director known for the offbeat films Gretel & Hansel and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House. He also directed Cage’s upcoming film, Longlegs.

Too often, film trailers tend to give the whole game away. But clearly Osgood Perkins — son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins and director of underrated chiller Gretel & Hansel — didn't get the memo. His latest, Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe-starring occult serial killer chiller Longlegs, has enjoyed an unnerving slew of cryptic teasers and promo posters — and the latest is no different. Check out the new trailer for the film below;
"Is it scary being a lady FBI agent?" an inquisitive kid asks Maika Monroe's (It Follows) Lee Harker. "Yeah," Lee replies. And honestly, on present evidence, that's fair. With its The Silence Of The Lambs-esque combo of crime-thriller procedural and out-and-out horror flourishes, this first full trailer for Perkins' latest has us all kinds of creeped out. From Nicolas Cage's whisper-voiced, straggly-haired weirdo killer, to the satanic symbology and fly-infested crime scenes glimpsed, to the jaundiced Zodiac-esque palette of the whole thing,...

The classic tale of Hansel & Gretel has been brought to the screen a handful of times over the years, and now an upcoming stop motion animated film has attracted some A-list talent.
Variety reports that Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen have boarded the Hansel & Gretel movie as executive producers through their company Square Peg.
Chilean filmmakers Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña (The Hyperboreans) are directing. Variety notes, “The story is expected to twist the fairy tale into inimitable shapes.”
The duo co-directed the stop motion movie The Wolf House back in 2018, and they also worked in the animation department on Ari Aster’s most recent movie, Beau Is Afraid.
“It’s our very personal adaptation of the classic fairy tale, with the main difference that Hansel and Gretel are both boys in this version, at least at the beginning of the story,” Cristóbal León explained. In this telling, “the story itself gets lost,...

Nicolas Cage just might be the most terrifying serial killer onscreen…if he really is the murderer.
Cage stars in and produces “Longlegs,” the latest horror film from writer/director Oz Perkins who previously helmed “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” (2015), “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” (2016), and “Greta and Hansel” (2020).
Perkins, the son of “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins, is officially credited as Osgood Perkins for “Longlegs.” The film is produced by Cage’s Saturn Pictures, Range, Traffic, Oddfellows, and C2 Motion Picture Group. Actress
The feature centers on a series of occult murders that are connected to an FBI detective’s (Maika Monroe) past. A cold case is reawakened; Cage, Blair Underwood, and Alicia Witt co-star in the film.
Cage previously teased his role in a conversation with horror icon John Carpenter for Document Journal. The Oscar winner hinted that his character might be the killer as he...

Well, here's news you don't see every day.
Director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, the same horror filmmaking duo that gave us "Sinister" (read /Film's oral history here) and "The Black Phone," have confirmed their next project: "The Night of the Hunter," adapted from the 1953 novel by Davis Grubb. The project is being developed at Universal.
"The Night of the Hunter" follows Harry Powell, a faux-preacher, and misogynistic serial killer, in the 1930s Ohio River Valley. After Powell is arrested for stealing a car (from one of his brides-turned-victims), his cellmate is Ben Harper, who's on death row for armed robbery/homicide. Harper hid the stolen money in his daughter Pearl's doll, intending it to be her and his son John's birthright, and took that secret to his grave. We’ve all grown up hearing the classic fairytale. A brother and sister are turned out of their home and sent by their wicked stepmother to survive in the deep, dark woods. The ingenious Hansel leaves a trail of pebbles and breadcrumbs to find the way home, but they eventually fall into the clutches of a sinister witch. While Gretel does get credit for pushing the old witch into the oven before she can roast and eat Hansel, most of the story’s heroism still falls on male shoulders. But what if Gretel was actually the one responsible for the sibling’s survival? What if it’s her courage and fortitude that saves the day while her brother is little more than a burden? Oz Perkins’s nightmarish film turns the classic fairy tale on its head...

“Familiar” is one of those descriptors critics can twist into a positive or negative connotation. William Brent Bell’s folkloric Lord of Misrule basks in culty Pagan familiarity but not as cheap mimicry. If you’ve seen The Wicker Man, The Ritual, Kill List — I’ll spare you thirty more titles — you won’t be stricken dumbstruck by writer Tom de Ville’s ode to harvest rituals and wretched traditions. Bell’s not rewriting the book on insidious celebrations beneath all the synchronized dances and laughter, and yet, Lord of Misrule is an undeniably atmospheric venture into villages of the damned.

Back in the 1980s, the term “home video” actually referred to movies that had been transferred to honest-to-goodness analog videocassette tape. Keen-eyed genre mavens would excitedly trawl the aisles of their local emporium, often choosing between titles based on little more than lurid cover art and advertising hype.
One of the premier purveyors of the most cherished low-budget, unabashedly lowbrow entertainments was Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, staffed by a tightly knit “band of outsiders” whose names crop up time and again across the studio’s roster of deliriously enjoyable sci-fi and horror films. As it happens, Empire was a pure product of the decade, founded in 1983 and defunct by 1989, when it made way for Band’s next (and still flourishing) endeavor: Full Moon Features. Now, the fine folks at Arrow Video have gathered together a bumper crop of Empire’s output in their lavishly produced box set Enter the Video Store: Empire of Screams.

Once Upon A One More Time is one of the first Britney Spears-backed projects following the termination of her 13-year conservatorship.
Helmed by directors and choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, with an original story by Jon Hartmere, the musical comedy is slated to open on June 22 at the Marquis Theater and will feature hits like “Oops I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Circus” and “Toxic.”
Ahead of its Broadway run, Once Upon a One More Time attempted a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago beginning in 2019. Initially set for the James M. Nederlander Theatre in October, it would be delayed, and the opening rescheduled for April 2020. But in March, the pandemic shut down the theater industry, with the show’s producers eventually deciding to cancel the planned engagement altogether.

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

As someone who has been a "Star Wars" fan since I saw the first film as a little girl, I've been part of many debates about the original series. Years before the first prequel, "The Phantom Menace," came out in 1999, I was arguing for and against characters with my friends, defending the Ewoks (I was just the right age), and trying to figure out why so many characters couldn't keep their arms attached to their bodies.
The Ewoks were a big argument, though, which has often led to a debate on who exactly the films were made for. Were the "Star Wars" films for children? I'd always thought so — at least for the first trilogy. Often the argument was that the idea of a murderous father was too awful for kids. My defense was always that "The Hobbit," assorted fairy tales with parents who leave their children in the woods...

Traditional fairy tales almost always have important lessons to teach. Goldilocks educates us on why you probably shouldn't just wander into a stranger's house one day and make yourself at home. Red Riding Hood alerts us to the perils of talking to suspicious strangers, even if they are wearing your grandmother's clothes. And Hansel and Gretel expand upon the "strangers are bad" lesson by teaching us that just because a house is made of candy, that doesn't mean you should necessarily start gorging on it.
Because all of these fairytales have a creepy bend to them, many, if not all, have been turned into horror films over the years. Sometimes the movies are obvious retellings of classic tales like 2020's "Gretel & Hansel" or 2011's "Red Riding Hood." Other times though, the fairytale source material is a bit harder to put your finger on.

Taylor Momsen is a name that many pop culture fans think of when they conjure up images of a child star. The young actor, who now focuses primarily on music, started acting in the early 2000s after a stint of appearances in commercials. Her high-profile role in How the Grinch Stole Christmas made her a household name, and she went on to act in several other major movies and TV shows. Unlike many other young actors, Momsen never loved the spotlight — and in the years following her ascent to fame, she opened up about how she “had no choice” in becoming a child star.

Gory, glittery and irresistibly bleak, In My Mother’s Skin represents a stylish, ripe contribution to the folk-horror canon. Not unlike his acclaimed debut, Ma (2018), Manila-based writer-director Kenneth Dagatan’s second feature revolves around a young person who makes a bargain with a malevolent insectoid forest spirit to help her family — with disastrous consequences.
This time round, Dagatan and his team have added a period frame by setting the story on a rural estate in the Philippines during the final days of World War II, just before the defeat of the occupying Japanese forces. Inevitably, that fascism subtext coupled with the creepy-ancient-being stuff strongly brings Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth to mind, at least to a Western viewer’s eyes. But if you’re going to steal, steal from the best. And there’s plenty that’s fresh, frisky and original here. It’s no surprise the global rights were...

Folklore and horror are often two sides of the same coin. Genre filmmakers the world over have either drawn from or created local myths to jangle the nerves of their audience, from “The Wicker Man” in Britain and “The Blair Witch Project” in America to “La Llorona” in Guatemala and “Kwaidan” in Japan. For the latest evidence, look no further than the Philippines and “In My Mother’s Skin” — already picked up by Amazon ahead of its Sundance Mdnight premiere. Writer-director Kenneth Dagatan’s second feature after 2018’s “Ma” (no relation to the Octavia Spencer picture) takes place in the waning months of World War II, as Japan’s occupation of the Philippines is nearing its (un)merciful end. Though that watershed conflict is mostly confined to the background, the film’s very first line of dialogue makes it clear that political and supernatural horrors shall intermingle: “Did you hear...

A supernatural horror rife with family ambiguity, anger and self-discovery, Sarah Lasry’s Spell on You (La Verrue) sees the Paris-based director take the confusion and rage of her childhood and combine it with the companionship she found in the world of witches and spells. It’s a narrative which empowers her young protagonist who after being initially horrified by the warts on her nose, through them, learns to harness her own unearthly powers. Lasry explores adult themes beyond the grasp of children yet glimpsed through forbidden keyholes and cracks in doors, and unlocks the freedom of self-expression through powers unknown. Spell on You is a creeping dark burgeoning of power where the adults do not rule and an ominous presence is felt right from the seeming normality of the opening scene through to a crescendo of unbalance in its final moments. Ahead of today’s premiere, we sat down...

Hospital dramas love the evil corporate takeover trope, but not Chicago Med.
While Gaffney Medical Center may now belong to Jack Dayton, he's not heartless or evil, and so far, he isn't trying to cut costs in ways that destroy the hospital's ability to provide health care.
On Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 10, Will was aggravated, and Archer was skeptical, but Dayton came through for a patient who needed him in the end. There's no telling how long it'll be before he does something problematic. Right now, though, this is a nice departure from the usual.
Like most hospital owners, Jack was more absent than anything else (how often was the previous owner at Med?). Archer's skepticism over Dayton's intentions matched my own.
Halstead: A brand new coffee machine?
Archer: Courtesy of our new pal Jack Dayton.
Halstead: I hope this courtesy extends to patient care.
Archer: Don't hold your breath.

Like a cyanide-laced sugarplum, Violent Night is a jolly and vicious burst of holiday mayhem. Bloody and crass, yet brimming with Christmas spirit, it’s a 110-minute joke that largely works because of how firmly everyone involved commits to the bit.
David Harbour stars as Santa Claus, first seen drinking his holiday blues away at a London watering hole. Santa’s having a rough Christmas Eve; kids are getting greedier and naughtier every year, and he’s thinking of hanging up the hat. His night doesn’t get any easier when he heads to the United States-based home of a wealthy, heartless matriarch (Beverly D’Angelo), whose family has been taken hostage by a gang of thieves (led by John Leguizamo). While his first instinct is to fly off and finish his route, the presence of an innocent child (Leah Brady) causes Santa to reconsider, call upon the skills he learned...

Santa Claus is coming to town with his bag of toys and a war hammer to take down some very bad mercenaries who are on his naughty list in the holiday comedy, Violent Night.
The movie begins with Old Saint Nick sitting in a bar in England on Christmas Eve. Santa’s drowning his sorrow and misery, fed up with all the greed in the world. So many little kids are only interested in getting presents and don’t actually have any real Christmas spirit.
As he flies off in his sleigh to continue his night of gift delivery, the bartender – who followed him to the roof, concerned he might fall – watches Santa fly away with his reindeer. She’s pleasantly awestruck…that is until her head gets covered in Santa’s projectile vomit as he dashes off. This sets up what...

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the great Nicolas Cage will be starring in Longlegs, the latest horror project from The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and Gretel & Hansel director Osgood Perkins. Details on the story Perkins wrote were being kept completely under wraps, but it was said that Longlegs is aiming to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.” Now Cage has let a little information about the film slip out, revealing that he’ll be playing a possessed doll maker.
Cage revealed this information while talking to legendary filmmaker John Carpenter. Document Journal has published a long conversation with Cage and Carpenter, during which they ask each other about their careers and shower each other with compliments. As the discussion goes on, Cage mentions,

There may be two “Pinocchio” films on the horizon, but Nicolas Cage just threw in an unexpected twisted take on the beloved classic.
Cage is set to star in and produce the upcoming horror film “Longlegs,” written and directed by Osgood Perkins (“The Blackcoat’s Daughter”). Filming is set to begin in 2023, and the feature will be in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers. While the plot details were formerly under wraps, Cage teased a few spoilers while in conversation with horror icon John Carpenter for Document Journal.
“I’m working with Oz [Perkins], who you probably know,” Cage told Carpenter. “He’s pretty strong in the horror genre at the moment. But he’s actually Anthony [Perkins’] son. He’s done some really good movies. ‘Gretel and Hansel’ was terrific.”
Cage continued of “Longlegs,” “It’s about a character who’s hearing voices. It’s kind of like a possessed Geppetto,...

Carlota Pereda’s debut feature, Piggy, takes horror’s revenge trope and twists it just so. It isn’t so simple as a much-abused underdog getting a freakish chance to get her payback and painting the landscape with her enemies’ dispatched blood and guts, though in this case, as in many cases, you might forgive her if she did. Bullying is at the forefront of Piggy. Our heroine, Sara (Laura Galán), is fat, and because of that, she becomes a target. “Piggy” is what some of the local hotties, with...
