Life has its share of mysteries, but the contents of a box of drugstore chocolates (think Russell Stover and Godiva) doesn’t have to be one of them. Most follow the same plan, largely for practical reasons. Square and rectangular treats typically have crunchy or chewy centers: “Fillings like caramel and toffee cool on large slabs, then are cut at right angles and dipped in chocolate,” says Tom Ward, the president and CEO of Russell Stover. Circular and oval treats almost always contain soft fillings, such as ganache or cream. Nut candies have easy-to-read bumpy surfaces.

Running a bar or restaurant, even a fictional one, is no easy task. Between keeping the bathrooms well stocked with paper towel and keeping the health inspector at bay for another few months, bar owners may not have enough time in the day to think about building brand awareness. That’s okay, though, because U.K. graphic designer and branding expert Tom Ward is here to help. Through his studio located near London, he’s worked with plenty of real clients, including Levi’s and the National Health Service. As his Instagram account shows, he’s obviously something of a movie and pop culture buff as well. Of late, Ward has found a project that manages to combine his profession and his passion. Movie Mats is a series of colorful, customized coasters based on fictional watering holes from movie history. Even though these places technically don’t exist, they remain...

In many ways, the movie characters of the 1980s had it very lucky. Not only did they get to experience firsthand what was, at least according to the Rnc, the single greatest era in American history, but they didn’t have to deal with all the depressing problems and complications of the new millennium. Okay, sure, Marty McFly had to deal with a teensy weensy bit of terrorism for a few minutes, and the families in Goonies were facing foreclosure. But, for the most part, it was a magical, trouble-free decade, 10 straight years of leg warmers, arcade games, and Rubik’s Cubes. Even the senior citizens refrained from complaining that the Indiana Jones films had somehow “raped their childhood” by bastardizing the serials they had grown up with. But artist Tom Ward was not satisfied with letting the B.A. Baracuses and Peter Venkmans of the world hibernate in ...

★★☆☆☆ Fantasy epic Seventh Son (2014) had potential to be a somewhat unique film in a genre abundant with echoing plot arcs and medieval-like worlds, but the amalgamation of different cinematic influences director Sergey Bodrov used to illustrate his story is overwhelmingly distracting. Exhaustingly exuberant acting from almost the entire cast, poorly written dialogue, and cheesy comical CGI effects all add to the feeling of seemingly never ending torture the film subjects its audience to. Although the film tries to follow the young adult heartthrob hero Tom Ward (Ben Barnes, perhaps best known for his role as Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia), it's hard to pull away from Jeff Bridges fantastic Master Gregory.

Chicago – I can’t decide which is worse: the “fake deep talk” from Jeff Bridges in “Seventh Son” or the “angry whisper talk” from Eddie Redmayne in “Jupiter Ascending,” which also opened on Friday. Both speech impediments are ugly fish out of water, both films are getting punished by critics and both are underperforming at domestic box offices.
Ironically, both movies have also also been quite delayed and now we see why. “Jupiter Ascending” opened two days ago after initially being slated to open in July 2014. That film’s push back was justified to finish its extensive special effects, which “The Matrix” creators did without remembering to fix its laughable acting and weak story.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Also knowing it was in trouble, “Seventh Son” was originally supposed to open way back in Feb. 2013, but the film was pushed back once and then a second time to Feb. 2015. It even changed distribution...

"Seventh Son" is a new fantasy adventure film that hopes to be a new "Lord of the Rings" but unfortunately is more like a less successful "Eragon". It is a big budget, effects filled movie populated by talented actors, such as Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, but even they can't save the second rate material they are working with.
In "Seventh Son", Bridges plays Master Gregory whose job it is to fight witches and other dark creatures, protecting the land as the last of a dying breed of knights called Spooks. His apprentice is killed by the powerful witch Mother Malkin, played by Moore, so he must find a new one. That is where Ben Barnes' character Tom Ward comes into play. He is the seventh son of a seventh son, and thus destined to be a strong and talented spook's apprentice. He joins up with Bridges' Gregory to...

Ben Barnes, best known for his portrayal of Prince Caspian in the Narnia franchise, is no stranger to mythical beasts and dangerous swordplay. While this might not be a useful trait for the world you or I live in, such talents are necessary when hunting medieval monsters, which made Barnes a perfect fit for Sergey Bodrov’s Seventh Son. Although the film was finished a few years ago, audiences are just now getting the opportunity to watch Barnes fight witches alongside the likes of Jeff Bridges and a loveable ogre, as they rush to stop Julianne Moore before she harnesses an impending Blood Moon for all of its evil power.
I had the chance to sit down with Ben Barnes last weekend when he was in New York City to promote Seventh Son alongside his fellow cast members, and we chatted at length about his role as Spook apprentice Tom Ward.

Just as the film bludgeoned me almost immediately over the head with its insipid nature, I’m going to just jump right into the plot of Seventh Son, or at least what I can make of it. It’s hard to decipher exactly what Jeff Bridges is saying under his accent that sounds like a cross between Gandalf and Bane from The Dark Knight Rises but I’ll do my best. A young Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) locks up a powerful witch that goes by the name Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) in a cave atop a mountain as the film begins. She remains restrained until a “Blood Moon” rises – something that happens once every century – which then causes her to transform into a dragon and escape her slumber. In those years that have passed, Gregory has continued to become a powerful “spook” (think wizard/witch-slayer). Malkin’s return though results...

Just when you thought that Jeff Bridges’ on-screen accents couldn’t get any more ridiculous than his rootin-tootin’ cowboy persona in R.I.P.D, Seventh Son comes along with another cartoonish turn from the actor, this time as a medieval Ghostbuster with a mouth full of marbles. Unfortunately, the comparisons to R.I.P.D don’t stop there as far as Bridges’ latest film is concerned, as Seventh Son is another slight blockbuster blunder whose clunkiness reveals why Sergey Bodrov’s fantasy adventure sat shelved for roughly three years. Blame it on unfocused post-3D, unavoidable comparisons to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and lax character development – a dangerous trifecta that puts a damper on the unintentional comedy found in the few lines of dialogue Bridges mumbles that are just clear enough to understand.

Chances are you saw the "Seventh Son" spot that aired as part of Sunday night's big Super Bowl game (the one that played while Katy Perry was offstage, partying with her land-shark homeboys). The swashbuckling fantasy, starring Jeff Bridges and Ben Barnes and based on the novel "The Spook's Apprentice" by Joseph Delaney, features a lot of off-the-wall monster action in its various promotional materials but not nearly enough Julianne Moore as a villainous witch goddess named Mother Malkin. Well, here we are, answering your prayers with an exclusive scene from the movie (out this Friday).
In this brief clip, Djimon Hounsou, playing Radu (a character not in the original novel), brings Mother Malkin a small troop of assassins, to rid the world of The Spook (Bridges) and his apprentice, Tom Ward (Barnes). After years of sitting around collecting dust, Sergei Bodrov’s Seventh Son is ready to take viewers on a enchanted journey filled with monsters, mayhem, and another one of Jeff Bridges’ interesting accents. Starring Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes, Bridges, and many other familiar faces, Bodrov’s film will finally be unleashing itself on the general public February 6th, a date that also brings about questions of a sequel if the box office numbers warrant another go. We all know the current landscape of Hollywood – if the numbers are there, a franchise will be born – and no one would be happier to see another Seventh Son than Barnes himself.
This weekend, I had the chance to chat with Barnes about his role as Master Gregory’s young apprentice, Tom Ward, who is learning the ropes about monster hunting in medieval times. Barnes believes Seventh Son is just the beginning of Ward’s cinematic exploits though,...

On paper, "Seventh Son" has potential. The cast includes veterans Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore ("The Big Lebowski" reteam), rising stars Alicia Vikander and Kit Harington, along with uh, Ben Barnes, in a Ya adaptation directed by Sergey Bodrov ("Mongol")—what could go wrong? Well, apparently a lot. Shot way back in the spring of 2012, nearly three years and many release date bumps later, "Seventh Son" is finally set to open in cinemas, and a new international trailer is here. Based on the sci-fi series "The Spook's Apprentice,” the movie tells the tale of Master Gregory (Bridges), who plucks an unassuming farmhand named Tom Ward (Barnes) to train in the dark arts, to help him track down the evil witch Mother Malkin (Moore), who he had imprisoned years ago. What follows is the usual quest-y stuff with prophecies and monsters....lots and lots of CGI monsters. "Seventh Son" arrives on February 6, 2015 (unless it gets.

Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarceration, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory. In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Jeff Bridges was lured into the Ya genre this year, but “The Big Lebowski” actor hasn’t had much luck so far. He played a big supporting role in summer’s Ya film “The Giver,” but the movie was mostly met with indifference from audiences. Up next for Bridges is the adaptation of the Ya fantasy sci-fi series "The Spook's Apprentice,” retitled “Seventh Son” for the screen. Perhaps his fortunes will change, but the project is already looking like the unwanted stepchild of the Ya movie genre. It's changed studios, going from Legendary to Universal when the shingle parted ways with Warner Bros, and it’s been delayed for about two years now. A trailer for the film appeared well over a year ago, but now that it’s in the hands of Uni, a new, very different trailer has arrived. The story centers around Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), a...

Based on the book series “The Last Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney, “Seventh Son” tells the story of Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) who faces the witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) years after he imprisoned her. He must train an apprentice, Tom Ward, (Ben Barnes) to join him in the epic battle otherwise she will take over the world with her evil powers. “I'm a big fan of mythology and I saw this as a chance to make a modern day myth,” said Bridges at Comic-Con in San Diego on July 20. “Also, it talks about good and evil and my idea is that good and evil are really the same side of the same coin.” Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”) also joined the cast because he was intrigued by the theme of good versus evil and also the fact there are plenty of witches, ghosts and warlocks in the story.

Warner Bros. were undoubtedly one of the biggest victors at Comic-Con over the weekend, announcing that Zack Snyder and co. would be returning to the fold to unite Superman and Batman for the first time on the big screen. Of the handful of other films the studio took to San Diego, Seventh Son was also welcomed with open arms, following a great first trailer that debuted earlier this month.
Prior to its appearance in San Diego, we started to see a number of Comic-Con character posters surface, and now we’ve got the final two in the set, showing off Jeff Bridges as Master Gregory and Julianne Moore as Mother Malkin.

Now we have a poster dedicated to Julianne Moore’s beautiful but evil Mother Malkin, a sorceress freshly escaped from imprisonment and bent on causing trouble. What. A. Witch. To stop her, Bridges' "Spook" Master Gregory will need to call upon Tom Ward (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son who has magical gifts and who might just be the key to helping stop the plague of witch activity… If it doesn’t kill him first. Trouble is, Malkin and her crone cohorts are also rather powerful, and adept at shape shifting, so they’re even more trouble than the regular cauldron types.Kit Harrington, Antje Traue, Alicia Vikander, Olivia Williams, Djimon Hounsou and Jason Scott Lee...

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures will be hoping to make a splash at Comic-Con with Seventh Son after Pacific Rim's lackluster (undeservedly-so I might add), and now we have a new character poster from the film featuring Ben Barnes as Tom Ward. This joins the previous posters we added for Djimon Hounsou, Jeff Bridges, Alicia Vikander as Alice, Kit Harington, and most-recently Antje Traue. Sergei Bodrov directs the film which opens in theaters from January 14th, a date which is out of the crowded frame, and one which might tell us this may be a stinker, despite how solid the trailer looks.
