Kevin Costner may have a lot of drama swirling around his small screen western but that doesn’t mean we weren’t excited for his next cinematic epic, Horizon: An American Saga. Now, we have the first reactions on social media out of the Cannes Film Festival, where the film screened out of competition.
Check out some of the initial reactions to Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga:

Horizon is a grand, sprawling epic or the birth of America, told with elegance and spectacle of yesteryear Hollywood. It proves once again that Kevin Costner is a master of the genre. I would have watched Chapter 2 immediately afterwards. #Cannes2024 pic.twitter.com/5ki7gxYqM3

Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.
The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Just like with the network, we don’t have any official cutoff in terms of the years of films that we’re showing. But, interestingly — it’s the opposite of a cutoff,...

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s relationship was one full of ups and downs. Their romance lasted eleven years and ended in a cloud of smoke that left both of them gasping for air. It is safe to say that being together for so long and walking away was difficult for both of them. Cruise managed to find love in Katie Holmes, with the two having an even more complex relationship. However, Kidman’s story was a lot more different.

We are somehow now into the spring season, and while cinemas have been a tad dull, noteworthy new books have arrived at a frantic pace. Here are some that should be on your radar, and please note that our next column will include, among other treats, a lengthy rundown of recent noteworthy novels.
The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two by Tanya Lapointe with Stefanie Broos (Insight Editions)
Dune: Part One, the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, spawned a handful of painstakingly crafted, info-packed hardcover books. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two takes the same approach that made these earlier texts so satisfying. Tanya Lapointe was on set every day, and her accounts of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes are captivating. The designs of Geidi Prime are standouts and supplemented with quotes like the following, from production designer Patrice Vermette...

Actress Olivia Colman has revealed that she was very nervous the night she won her Oscar.
Colman has shared that she had to take a beta blocker to calm down.
The actress, 50, also revealed that she ordered a high neck dress to hide a huge rash.
The actress states that the rash appears when she is stressed, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.
Colman won the award in 2019 for ‘The Favourite’, the movie in which she played Queen Anne.
The actress said in a new book: “I had been really against anyone talking about it as I didn’t like the pressure. I had half a beta blocker because I was so nervous. It took away all my fear. I shouldn’t recommend that, but it was great.”
As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, the pills slow down the heart.

Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.
“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. He’s the Walter Cronkite of TCM. The Johnny Carson. The Alex Trebek. With these intros of Robert’s, we’re celebrating his impact and his continued influence. Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”
Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.
For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary, TCM on April 14 will present a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from Robert Osborne and throughout the month feature programming with other staffers who started with the channel, it was announced Thursday.
For more than 22 years until his death in March 2017, the revered Osborne served as TCM’s primetime host, bringing millions of viewers into the world of classic cinema he knew as an actor mentored by Lucille Ball, as an Oscar historian and as a longtime The Hollywood Reporter reviewer and columnist.
“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” Ben Mankiewicz, who took over for Osborne, said in a statement. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne.

It’s not news that the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is a key stop on the awards trail. Every year, Executive Director Roger Durling pulls a starry lineup and Oscar wranglers make sure their clients make the most of the 2,000-seat Arlington Theatre red carpet tributes and panels.
The new trend? Multiple presenters, and thus even bigger star power. Bradley Cooper had both costar Carey Mulligan and friend Brad Pitt pay him tribute last Thursday, while on Friday Robert Downey Jr. drew both his old school chum Rob Lowe and “Oppenheimer” costar Cillian Murphy.
Saturday brought the producer and International panels along with the annual Virtuosos show hosted by TCM’s Dave Karger, who hawked his glossy new Oscar book published by TCM, “50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars & Filmmakers on Their Career-Defining Wins,” including Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Hudson, Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep, and more. It’s been a star-filled weekend in Santa Barbara, with a dozen of A-listers — including numerous Oscar nominees — making their way to the American Riviera for events at the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
On Friday night, inside the 2,000-seat Arlington Theater, which was sold out, the fest celebrated Robert Downey Jr. with its Maltin Modern Master Award, which is named after the film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Maltin moderated a brisk career retrospective conversation with the Oppenheimer best supporting actor Oscar nominee, who charmed the audience with his self-deprecating humor and imitations of everyone from Richard Attenborough to his late father Robert Downey Sr., prior to Downey’s costar Cillian Murphy presenting him with the award itself.

Whoopi Goldberg is looking back at how Patrick Swayze convinced her to take on her Oscar-winning role in 1990’s Ghost.
The actress told author Dave Karger in his new book 50 Oscar Nights, via People magazine, that she needed a bit of persuading before she decided to play psychic Oda Mae Brown in the Jerry Zucker-directed film.

Actress Nicole Kidman ate alone in her hotel room the night she won an Oscar in 2002 as she recalled “struggling” with her personal life despite the professional high. The 56-year-old actress won an Academy Award for her role in drama film ‘The Hours’ in 2002 but had not long split from Tom Cruise – with whom she has Isabelle, 30, as well as 28-year-old Connor – and recalled “struggling” with her personal life despite the professional high as she opted to just go back to her hotel after her victory at the ceremony.
In an excerpt from Dave Karger’s upcoming book ’50 Oscar Nights’ , she said: “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well. That’s what happens, right? I’m not a big party girl, so I was going to skip the Vanity Fair party, and everyone was like, ‘You’ve got to go.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Jeffrey Wright with the Montecito Award at a Feb. 15 event. At the event, Wright will discuss his career leading up to this year’s performance in “American Fiction,” for which he has received lead actor nominations for the Gotham, Spirit, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
“I’ve been a fan of Mr. Wright since I first saw him in 1993 in the original Broadway production of “Angels in America.” I’ve since admired that he brings a high level of class and integrity to every role he does. Yet, no film had capitalized on his extraordinary range and virtuosity until “American Fiction.” It is about time,” Sbiff’s Executive Director Roger Durling.
Wright has received Tony, Emmy, AFI and Golden Globe awards and has appeared in “Rustin,” “No Time to Die,” “Westworld,” “Asteroid City” and “The Batman.”

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced Thursday the 2023 recipients for its Virtuosos Awards, recognizing four performances from notable up-and-comers that are sure to gain awards traction all winter.
This year’s honorees are Lily Gladstone for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Greta Lee for Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Charles Melton for Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers.”
This quartet has been buzzed about for months since the earliest of the year’s film festivals, and all have an excellent shot at Oscar nominations in January. All four recently received performance nominations at this year’s Gotham Awards — however, Gladstone’s will be for her small indie release “The Unknown Country,” as “Killers” was not entered for consideration at the Gothams.

Telluride Film Festival attendees were treated to an honest-to-goodness crowdpleaser on Friday night at the Werner Herzog Theatre in the form of “Nyad.” The feature directing debut from “Free Solo” Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin had the packed audience literally cheering before its credits rolled, an impressive show of support for the filmmakers and distributor Netflix.
Described by Netflix as the “remarkable true story” of long-distance swimmer, sportscaster, author, and motivational speaker Diana Nyad, the film focuses on Nyad’s many attempts to swim from Cuba to Key West, Florida – a feat she finally accomplished in 2013 at the age of 64. Four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening stars as the prickly and controversial Nyad with two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster playing her steadfast coach, Bonnie Stoll – and the film, adapted from Nyad’s memoir by Julia Cox, gives both actors plenty of strong material with which to work. Charles Tabesh, TCM’s SVP of Programming who was reinstated at Warner Bros. Discovery after widespread outcry over his dismissal from the classic movie network, thanked fans for their continued support on Tuesday. “The support for TCM, and for me, has been wonderful,” he tweeted.
“I just want to say that it’s always taken a true team to make it work,” he added. “There are too many people to name so I won’t, but the talent and dedication has always been across the network. I know how lucky I’ve been to work with them.”
After speaking with industry heavyweights Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, Wbd CEO David Zaslav backtracked on Tabesh’s firing and agreed to bring him back on.

David Zaslav has at last made a good decision with regards to the film history he acquired more than a year ago via the creation of Warner Bros. Discovery. The fact that Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson were metaphorically leaning over his shoulder is probably not a coincidence. However he got there though, it seems the small but indispensable cable network that is Turner Classic Movies has been spared a total ransacking by its new corporate owners.
The news became official Wednesday afternoon with the announcement that rather than staying totally under the control of Wbd TV Networks, creative decisions regarding the classic cinema network will now fall under the oversight of Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy (Wbd TV will still control TCM’s budget). Further, after being ousted just last week from TCM by Wbd’s cable network C-Suite, longtime chief TCM programmer,...

Audiences are making it clear which superhero film they prefer at the box office right now, as Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has returned to the No. 1 spot in its fourth weekend in theaters while Warner Bros.’ “The Flash” has suffered a 72% second-weekend drop, the worst for the soon-to-be-finished DC Extended Universe.
“Across the Spider-Verse” earned $19.3 million this weekend, continuing its strong run as it passed $500 million in global grosses earlier this past week. With $317 million grossed domestically and over $525 million worldwide, “Across the Spider-Verse” is on the doorstep of passing the $563.7 million global total of the 2011 live-action/CGI hybrid “The Smurfs” and becoming Sony Pictures Animation’s highest-grossing movie ever.
“The Flash,” meanwhile, has collapsed from its $55 million opening to $15.3 million, suffering a second-weekend drop worse than that of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which had much more room to fall from its $106 million opening, and the 70% drop...

Just Days after Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson met with Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav to, essentially, make sure he wasn’t planning to kill off Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Wbd has decided to shut down the cable channel’s British version.
TCM Movies UK will cease to exist on July 6, 2023 TheWrap has confirmed. An individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap the closure is unrelated to the events concerning the U.S. version of TCM, and stems instead from a review of UK market-related linear strategy initiated after the merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.
Some of the TCM Movies UK film library will go to UK free-to-air channel Quest.
On Tuesday, TCM chief Pola Changnon exited the company amid layoffs of several other members of the network’s top brass, part of cuts affecting approximately 100 staffers across Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.

If the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival had an official focus, it was on the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros., from the opening night premiere selection of a restoration of “Rio Bravo” to a celebration of the 50th anniversary of “The Exorcist.” Almost equal in emphasis, though, by virtue of the guests brought in, was a celebration of the ingenues-turned-leading-ladies of the 1960s, who now represent the elder guard of a Hollywood golden age — Angie Dickinson, Ann-Margret and Shirley Jones.
Dickinson had the highest profile of any star at the festival, being the belle of the ball at the Thursday screening of “Rio Bravo” in the big house at the Tcl Chinese Theatres, where most of the screenings were held. Elton John is just one “E” away from being an Egot, and there was no mistaking that an event for Television Academy members at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre Monday night was not just about celebrating the success of Disney+’s livestreamed Dodger Stadium special from last November, but about reminding potential voters that the star lacks just one vowel in his crown.
Following a screening of a condensed version of “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium,” moderator Dave Karger, of TCM fame, asked, “Ben Winston, you have 12 Emmys; Elton has five Grammys, two Oscars, and a Tony. So combined, there’s an Egot on this state. Would you be willing to share?” Replied Fulwell 73 Productions’ Winston, who produced the special, “We’re all members of the Television Academy, and I think that we take it with us tonight that all of us have a responsibility…” before his remarks got drowned out by appreciative applause.

Friday night’s Palm Springs International Film Festival kicked off its opening night with the world premiere of “80 for Brady,” Kyle Marvin’s life-affirming comedy about four best friends — played by Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin — whose love for the legendary, seven-time Super Bowl Champion quarterback cuts so deep, they embark on a quest to Houston to see the New England Patriots play the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51. That game resulted in the Pats digging themselves out from a 25-point hole and winning the title in overtime, a feat considered one of the greatest comeback victories in the history of the NFL.
The audience gathered at Palm Springs High School for the screening was tickled silly by the film, based on a real-life story, with laughter and applause echoing throughout the theater, most notably in scenes spotlighting cameos by Pats’ heroes: former tight end...

On Thursday night in a desert resort east of Los Angeles, the Palm Springs International Film Awards filled a cavernous convention center with an all-star lineup of honorees: Viola Davis, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Yeoh, Steven Spielberg…
And 24 hours later, the Palm Springs International Film Festival officially opened with another all-star lineup: Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field.
The venue was different and so was the level of formality and glitz. But the biggest difference was that the 10 honorees on Thursday were there representing 10 different films, including “The Woman King,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Fabelmans,” while Friday’s event was the world premiere of a single movie, “80 for Brady,” which stars that formidable quartet of legendary women.

“31 Days of Oscar” on Turner Classic Movies has recently made some fascinating, big changes in how it presents the movies in its latest, annual presentation of the top films that once competed for Hollywood’s highest honor.
Usually, the series showcases films that have either won or were nominated for Oscars. “This year we’re just presenting Oscar-winning movies,” notes the series’ savvy host Dave Karger, who contributes his predictions to Gold Derby. “So it’s only Oscar-winning movies for the entire month of March, 24 hours a day, no commercials. That gives us some cachet.”
Below are the air dates of just some Best Picture winners. See the full “31 Days of Oscar” schedule here and take note that the movies tend to be grouped by different decades each day. “That’s so interesting because you get to see how the Oscars have changed over this passage of time,” notes Karger.
