Queenie! I squealed at the screen when I saw Gabourey Sidibe show up in the lobby of the Hotel Cortez, sporting her signature poppin' lipgloss and multicolored hair. Sadly, though, this refugee from American Horror Story: Coven didn't last very long. She survived the never-ending torture of working in a fried chicken joint in hell, only to be felled by James Patrick March two seasons later. Does that mean she'll stick around the hotel for good?As much as I loved seeing Queenie — and as much as I hate that she's robbed from playing Plinko on The Price Is Right — her appearance points out two big problems with the season. The first is the connections between anthology chapters. It's one thing when you have the Realtor from Murder House showing Will Drake the Cortez, since she was just a bit character who appears in two different seasons with no real...

The Commandments countdown is on!
On Wednesday's American Horror Story: Hotel, the Ten Commandments Killer will finally be revealed.
Speculation has been simmering to a boil since the season's October premiere regarding the serial killer's identity – and some have even floated the idea that Wes Bentley's John Lowe, the very detective who's been investigating the case, is responsible for the horrific murders.
But that's not to say there aren't plenty of other options. Heck, half of the damned residents of the Hotel Cortez are vampires whose very existence hinges on bloodshed, including Lady Gaga's sadistic Countess, Matt Bomer's ousted lover Donovan,...

American Horror Story: Hotel, Episode 1, “Checking In”
Written by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk
Directed by Ryan Murphy
Episode 2, “Chutes and Ladders”
Written by Tim Minear
Directed by Bradley Buecker
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm (Et) on FX
It is an unfortunate responsibility to be a critic of American Horror Story, because in many ways it defies criticism, intentionally so. Toward the end of Hotel’s second episode, Iris (Kathy Bates) fills in John (Wes Bentley) about the history of the hotel’s creator, James Patrick March (Evan Peters). An extremely wealthy oilman, he built the Hotel Cortez in 1925 essentially because he could, as a “monument to excess and opulence, where he could satisfy his own peculiar appetites”. This is presumably, and fittingly, a comparison to series creator Ryan Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk, with the murderous and indulgent March standing in for the pair.
This season in particular is greatly indulgent,...

Ryan Murphy really wants you to stay up past your bedtime. When my DVR told me that this episode was going to be one hour and 42 minutes long, 12 minutes longer than even the season premiere, I thought it had to be a lie. Surely this was one of those things where FX was making us tape an episode of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll that aired afterward so that someone would watch that abomination. But it was not a trick. This episode was really that long. And we got tons of answers. God, I really hope Ahs didn’t blow its load before episode three. The biggest exposition dump happened when Iris sat Detective John Lowe down at the bar (oh that gorgeous, gorgeous bar where I want to have every one of my birthdays from now until Lady Gaga's eyebrows grow back) and told him the entire story of James Patrick March,...

We sure learned a lot about Hotel Cortez tonight on American Horror Story: Hotel, and of course the biggest life lesson was: Never Eat The Sandwiches. Thanks for that maggot-infested vision, Ryan Murphy, because we are definitely swearing off bread and deli meat for all time! Of course, there were some very legitimate reveals as well in this masterfully packed episode, which gave us a deeply layered backstory. Let's count down the biggest reveals and theories. Biggest Reveals James Patrick Munch Is The Worst (and Evan Peters Is The Best). Thanks to Iris' (Kathy Bates) riveting black-and-white retelling of Hotel Cortez's history, we now know that...

Michelle Collins has aided the conviction of two parents by giving evidence yesterday (August 14). The Coronation Street actress met the couple's six Nigerian children at a church lunch before hearing their plight. According to the Daily Mail, the parents gave their one-year-old baby a morphine overdose, as well as beating their older children with brooms, hoovers and wires. The pair, unable to be named for legal reasons, have been jailed for seven years. During the trial, it emerged that Collins took the children to the cinema out of pity. Passing the sentence, Judge James Patrick condemned the parents for trying to cover up the "web of deception" and "shocking mistreatment". "No-one who sat through this trial could help but be moved by the fact that these intelligent, charming, fun, lovable children (more)...

My favorite item for the month is pictured above, the Sergio Aragones version of Batman from Batman: Black & White. But there are some absolute art gems here, including Darwyn Cooke’s Jsa cover, and Frank Quitely’s redoing of Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson’s cover for Green Lantern #52.
As for the rest of the books, take a look… as usual, spoilers ahead:
