Roberto Bentivegna, co-writer for the Ridley Scott-directed “House of Gucci,” developed most of the script over Zoom when he was stuck in Colombia during the onset of the pandemic. And yet, for a virtual screenwriting experience, it went off without a hitch.
“The process was very smooth,” Bentivegna told TheWrap about the process of writing the script. “I read the script in February of 2019, and we spent a couple of months casting the movie,” he said. “After that I left to go to Bogota, Colombia, which is where I am right now and the pandemic started and I got stuck here. It was really just me Ridley, Giannina [Facio Scott] his wife and the producer — and then every now and again, Adam Driver would show up on Zooms unannounced [with] questions and concerns and comments about about his character.”

In April 2019, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences board of governors decided to change the name of the foreign-language-film category, saying it was “outdated within the global film community.” So they renamed it “international film.” It’s better, but still not precise: All films are international, whether they’re in English or not. This year’s Academy Awards race provides many reminders of that fact.

Gucci fashion has made many appearances in Hollywood, both in movies and on the red carpet. The actual story of Gucci is worthy of a movie of its own, and it finally got one in House of Gucci.
Ridley Scott directs the tale of how Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) fell in love with Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga). Maurizio’s father Rodolfo (Jeremy Irons) does not not wish them to get married — he fears she’s after their wealth. Maurizio has little interest in the company himself, as he wants to be a lawyer.

One thing that Hollywood definitely knows how to do is tell a cinematic fairy tale. Whether cut from real life or a work of fiction, filmmakers have long believed that sometimes a story requires bending reality to take flight. In other instances, storytellers have looked to the real world when searching for inspirational tales that feel almost too good to be true. How do our favorite movies inhabit our dream lives, and do our dream lives create situations that might turn fairy tales into nightmares? How do big-screen legends give voices to our most compelling hopes and fears?

For 15 years filmmaker Ridley Scott wrestled with finding the perfect feature adaptation of Sara Gay Forden’s novel about the murder of Maurizio Gucci by ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. At one point Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie were even circling the project. However, the 544-page book proved a challenge for several screenwriters. That is until UK born, Columbia University alum and Black List screenwriter Roberto Bentivegna arrived with a Godfather-inspired, couture and dry-humored take; something Scott could visually wrap his arms around. The MGM-United Artists Releasing feature has awakened cautious adult moviegoers during the pandemic with the biggest debut to date at $22M over 5-days, a current running domestic B.O. of $36.2M on its way to $70M.

Lady Gaga had a good winter in 2019. On February 10 of that year she added three Grammys to her career haul, including Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Visual Media Song for “Shallow” from her film “A Star is Born.” Exactly two weeks later she won the Oscar for Best Original Song. Winning both awards in the same season is impressive enough, but there’s a chance she could do it again in 2022.

Jared Leto has come a long way since the days of expertly leaning against lockers. The Academy Award winner for “Dallas Buyers Club” (2014) currently stars in Ridley Scott’s new film “House of Gucci,” though you probably won’t recognize him. A man known for altering his appearance and disappearing into characters, he’s once again undergone a remarkable transformation to play the balding and overweight Paolo Gucci. However, beneath all the makeup, he’s still Jared Leto, which means it’s probably not surprising that his performance in the film has him staring down the possibility of a nomination for supporting actor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Some might consider watching biopics and other "based on a true story" movies to have a built-in downside, given that we generally know the ins and outs of these infamous stories and how they're fated to end. These individuals, sadly, are missing out on gems like the Pablo Larraín's Princess Diana film "Spencer" and, most recently, Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci." Chronicling the story of the absurdly rich Gucci family and the empire they built selling designer fashion, Scott and screenwriters Roberto Bentivegna and Becky Johnston found an immensely entertaining way to bring audiences into the privileged life of Maurizio Gucci (Adam...

Gaga rules in Ridley Scott’s at times ridiculous drama based on the true-life sagas of the Italian fashion dynasty
“The most Gucci of them all” is how Patrizia Reggiani described herself in a 2014 interview and, judging by this entertainingly ripe, comedically tinged tragedy, she has a point. Variously known as “Lady Gucci” and “Black Widow”, Reggiani became the centre of a very 1990s scandal involving lust, money, fashion, murder… and a clairvoyant. To that tabloid-friendly cocktail, Ridley Scott’s latest “true story” potboiler adds a dash of pop superstardom, with Lady Gaga (Oscar- nominated for her close-to-home performance in A Star Is Born) relishing the chance to find the human cracks beneath a larger-than-life, femme fatale surface.
Adapted by screenwriters Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna from the nonfiction book by Sara Gay Forden, House of Gucci charts a crowd-pleasing course from the Milanese party scene of the 1970s to a high-profile,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “House of Gucci,” an epic family story about the famous fashion brand, directed by Ridley Scott and featuring Lady Gaga, Adam Driver and Al Pacino, opening in theaters on November 24th, 2021.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Lady Gaga portrays Patrizia Reggiani, a lower class Fellini-esque woman who marries Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), part of the famous fashion empire called Gucci. The brand is still managed by the older generation, here represented by Rodolfo Gucci (Jeremy Irons) and his brother Aldo (Al Pacino). When the marriage of Patrizia and Maurizio starts to falter and split, the scorned Gucci wife enlists the aid of her psychic (Salma Hayek) to plot her revenge.

From his early film roles in “Fight Club” and “Requiem for a Dream” to his Oscar-winning turn in “Dallas Buyers Club” and even his twisted take on the Joker in “Suicide Squad,” Jared Leto is known for his transformative performances. But none of those previous parts could have prepared audiences for how Leto looks and sounds in Ridley Scott’s epic new drama “House of Gucci.” Leto spent hours in the makeup chair and altered his matinee idol looks to play the bald and overweight Paolo Gucci, a punching bag for the Gucci family whose own father frequently calls him an idiot.
“When I read it, I just fell in love with this character, the idea of playing this part,” Leto tells Gold Derby in a new interview. “I didn’t know what he looked like, what he sounded like. But there was something on the page that I just connected to.

House Of Gucci is based on a true story, one filled with wealth, power, ambition, family, tradition, high fashion, and murder, a story that plays like Italian opera, equal parts tragedy and farce. Ridley Scott directs, and the lush production stars Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons and Jared Leto.
Filled with gorgeous period clothes and cars, lovely sets and locations, mostly in Milan, and fine photography, House Of Gucci delivers visual delights and jet-set style in this story that runs from the ’70s to the ’90s. Upon sitting down to write about House of Gucci, I thought I’d open with a quote. There had to have been some line, however peripheral, that stuck. That wasn’t the case. How about a moment that encapsulates its 157 minutes? It has the components necessary to dive into its artifice, at least in theory. There’s the grandeur, and there are the more hyperbolic aspects that match whatever people loosely toss the term “camp” at. Alas, nothing on that front dug its heels into me either. Instead all I asked was why this thing is so hard to latch onto.
It’s probably because of the script, which feels like more of an information dump of vignettes than the parsimony Ridley Scott’s direction tries to cobble it toward. It might even be because some of the cast is oddly forgettable. And what if it’s actually because this...

“House of Gucci” has a transfixing backstabbing allure. It may be a drama about a crazy rich Euro chic Old World fashion dynasty, with a cast dominated by American actors scheming and emoting in gaudy Italian accents, but that doesn’t mean it’s some operatic piece of high camp. Based on the trailer, a lot of people apparently thought that’s just what it was going to be, yet trailers can be deceiving. There are moments in “House of Gucci” that will make your jaw drop, and moments you’ll laugh at the sheer audacity of what you’re seeing, but just because the characters in a drama behave in an over-the-top shameless manner doesn’t mean that the film that’s observing them is over-the-top.

Lady Gaga fans hit the roof on Twitter earlier this year when the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s soapy fashion murder drama “House of Gucci” hit the internet. Namely, a certain already-iconic line said by Gaga instantly went viral, as she’s seen crossing herself and reciting “Father, Son, and House of Gucci.” In the film, it’s invoked as a sort of promise to Jared Leto’s Paolo Gucci to trick him into the good graces of Gaga’s Patrizia Reggiani.
As Lady Gaga revealed to Variety on the red carpet of the film’s Los Angeles premiere, she actually ad-libbed the line. “I would do it in the trailer all the time,” she said at the premiere, which took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. “I was doing it in the trailer and then something about that scene when we were doing it felt right.

“House of Gucci” doesn’t come out until Nov. 24, but one line of dialogue has already become iconic.
As soon as the first trailer was released in July, footage of Lady Gaga as Patrizia Gucci reciting “Father, Son and House of Gucci,” while making the sign of the cross, became an internet sensation.
It turns out the line was an ad-lib by Gaga. “I would do it in the trailer all the time,” she told me, slipping into an Italian accent, on Thursday night at the Los Angeles premiere of the film at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. “I was doing it in the trailer and then something about that scene when we were doing it felt right. We did it, and it’s a testament to Ridley Scott as a director because he uses the stuff. He uses the creativity. He uses the love.”

Our “Meet the Experts” Film Writers Panel brought together four awards contenders to discuss their unique projects: Sian Heder (“Coda”), Roberto Bentivegna (“House of Gucci”), Fran Kranz (“Mass”) and Rebecca Hall (“Passing”). Their films differ greatly in style, scope, and subject matter. But is their approach to the writing process just as different? Watch our exclusive video interview with the panel above. For screenwriter Roberto Bentivegna, “House of Gucci” was “the perfect marriage of personal experience and something that has been sort of in the public eye for many years.” He grew up in Milan, and his mother was a fashion designer. Not only that, “I used to play two doors down from where Mauricio Gucci was murdered. So I knew the story just by osmosis.” Bentivegna joined us for our “Meet the Experts” Film Writers Panel. Watch our exclusive video interview with him above.
Bentivegna’s script for “Gucci,” which is directed by Ridley Scott, is based on the nonfiction book by Sara Gay Forden and tells the true story of the events leading up to Mauricio Gucci’s death in 1995. “I really wanted it to be almost like a fashion noir or like a fashion gangster film,” he says. “I feel like the world of fashion has not really been...

Exclusive: As his House of Gucci cast premiered the awards season entry in Europe in concert with the 100th anniversary celebration of the fashion brand, Ridley Scott stayed back in Los Angeles. Glimpsed through the limited lens of a Zoom call, Scott obviously lives well. But he’s quick to say that where he’d rather be is the getaway home in France where he suddenly finds himself at the center of a fledgling winemaking business that manufactured its first batch of reds and roses from grapes grown on his estate in Provence. He shares the place with wife Giannina Facio, a driving force as producer on House of Gucci along with Scott, Kevin Walsh and Mark Huffam. And you might remember her as Maximus’ wife in those Gladiator flashbacks as Russell Crowe’s character was dying.

First reactions for Ridley Scott’s star-studded murder drama “House of Gucci” are trickling in following the movie’s official world premiere in London. The film is Scott’s second major release of 2021 following “The Last Duel,” which launched to strong reviews out of the Venice Film Festival but flopped at the box office. Will “House of Gucci” be a rebound for Scott? Based on the first reactions below, it appears the director has made a messy and soapy fashion epic that’s bound to be one of the buzziest films of the holiday movie season.

If you thought “Borat” (2006) started a frenzy of pop culture and consumers quoting lines for years, wait until we navigate the next couple months with Lady Gaga’s take on famed murderess Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s campy “House of Gucci” — which cement Mother Monster herself as one of the leading contenders for the best actress prize.

MGM has opened the doors to “House of Gucci” with a brand-new trailer for the Ridley Scott drama before its debut in theaters on November 24.
The highly anticipated film is one of the biggest awards contenders yet to widely screen — something certain to change in the coming weeks. Not that enthusiasm for the project is low: the Gold Derby odds have it in play for a number of top awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Lady Gaga, Best Actor for Adam Driver, and Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto. Those performers are given some explosive moments in the new trailer — particularly Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of hiring a hitman to kill her ex-husband, Gucci heir Maurizio (Driver). “I don’t consider myself a particularly ethical person, but I am fair,” Lady Gaga says as Patrizia as the trailer concludes. “I subscribe to unconventional punishments.

Three years after “A Star Is Born,” Lady Gaga is back in the Oscar race for her latest acting tour de force in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci.” She stars as Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of orchestrating the killing of her ex-husband and ex-head of the Gucci fashion empire Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) in 1998, and served 16 years in prison. From the looks of this latest trailer from distributor MGM, Lady Gaga tears down the house in Scott’s soapy murder saga, and is gunning for that Best Actress statuette. Watch the new trailer below before the film arrives in theaters on November 24 via MGM distributing arm United Artists Releasing.

MGM has offered another peek at “House of Gucci,” releasing a new trailer for its upcoming star-studded drama.
Set to the alluring beat of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the British pop duo Eurythmics, the new trailer features the first meeting between socialite Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), accompanied by her husband Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), and the lavishly wealthy Italian family. “House of Gucci” will tell the true story of the assassination of Maurizio and the collapse of the Gucci family’s fashion dynasty. Reggiani was tried and convicted of orchestrating her ex-husband’s murder in 1998.
The trailer offers a further look at the opulence and menace of the Gucci family’s world of high fashion, showcasing wild disco sequences, a blindingly white ski trip and the deadly conclusion of its story.
The production is directed by Ridley Scott, whose medieval epic “The Last Duel” hit theaters less than two weeks ago.

“Father, Son, and House of Gucci”: Has Lady Gaga ever uttered more iconic words?
The star-studded trailer for Ridley Scott‘s “House of Gucci,” in theaters November 24, promises plenty of greed, deception, and of course, murder. But audiences were also left to unravel the real-life mystery surrounding the fashionable family. The film already is being eyed for awards season buzz as Adam Driver and Gaga seem to be a match made in Academy Award heaven coming off respective critically acclaimed films “Marriage Story” and “A Star Is Born,” and coupled with performances by an unrecognizable Jared Leto, Al Pacino, and Jeremy Irons, all Oscar winners. Golden Globe award-winning star Salma Hayek rounds out the cast, alongside Camille Cottin, Jack Huston, and Reeve Carney.

2018’s “A Star is Born” was a breakthrough film for both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. It introduced Cooper as a feature film director and Gaga as a feature film actress. They earned a combined five Oscar nominations for the film, including lead acting honors for both. Say “ciao” to your first official look at Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in “House of Gucci.”
Set to Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” the trailer, which debuted Thursday afternoon, provides a glimpse into the drama, costumes and accents we’ve all been eagerly anticipating since the glitzy project was announced.
The film, directed by Ridley Scott, follows the assassination of Maurizio Gucci (Driver) as well as the downfall of the Gucci fashion empire. Gaga plays socialite Patrizia Reggiani, Maurizio’s ex-wife, who was tried and convicted of orchestrating his murder after he left her for a younger woman.
1970s glam aside, the trailer does hint at the darkness of the based-on-a-true-story flick.

Salma Hayek has joined the cast of “House of Gucci,” Ridley Scott’s next film that stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver and is filming now for MGM.
Hayek joins a cast that already includes Gaga, Driver, Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino, Jack Huston and Jared Leto. Hayek in “House of Gucci” is playing Pina Auriemma, a friend of Reggiani and a clairvoyant who was sentenced to 25 years in prison following Maurizio Gucci’s murder trial in 1998 for allegedly organizing the killing for a fee.

Patrizia Reggiani, the former Gucci heiress who was convicted of ordering former husband Maurizio Gucci’s murder, is calling out Lady Gaga, who is starring as Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie “House of Gucci.” A first photo of Gaga as Reggiani and Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci debuted this week to explosive fanfare from moviegoers, but the real Reggiani says she’s “rather annoyed” that Gaga never contacted her or met her prior to filming “House of Gucci.”
“I am rather annoyed at the fact that Lady Gaga is playing me in the new Ridley Scott film without having had the consideration and sensibility to come and meet me,” Reggiani told Italian news agency Ansa (via The Independent). “It is not an economic question. I won’t get a cent from the film. It is a question of good sense and respect.”
