Photo: ‘Sweet Girl’ Revenge at a Cost From director and producer Brian Andrew Mendoza comes ‘Sweet Girl’, a revenge action-thriller that was released to Netflix this past Friday. The film follows Jason Momoa as Ray, a father who recently lost his wife, as he embarks on a quest to bring justice to those responsible for his wife’s death while also protecting the only family he has left, his daughter Rachel portrayed by Isabela Merced. The film attempts to find a spot somewhere between the styles of other revenge thrillers such as the recent Liam Neeson film ‘Cold Pursuit’ or the Keanu Reeves film ‘John Wick’, trying to offer surprises and thrills while also delivering on the common expectations and conventions of the subgenre. Is it harder to picture Jason Momoa getting manhandled by dudes in a fight, or to buy the wacky plot device excusing his manhandling? “Sweet Girl,” Brian Andrew Mendoza’s directorial debut, leaves it to the audience to choose their own misgiving.

It’s Friday, which means that it’s time for Netflix to release another generic action thriller into the wild. This week it’s Sweet Girl, which stars Jason Momoa as a devoted husband and father whose loss of his wife to cancer — which could have been possibly prevented had the big, bad pharma company done the right thing — sends him and his daughter down a dark path of justice.
Directed by Brian Andrew Mendoza, Momoa’s longtime producing partner who makes his directorial debut here, Sweet Girl fits the exact brief of the kind of run-of-the-mill thriller, written and shot according to a specific formula and anchored by one big star, which the streaming giant has made into a vast cottage industry. A perfunctory layer of social consciousness is applied over the top, but it’s done in such a heavy-handed manner that the film just becomes exhausting to watch.

Sweet Girl finds Jason Momoa and all of his mammoth screen presence in John Q mode. Directed by his longtime collaborator Brian Andrew Mendoza, the Aquaman star plays Ray Cooper, a tried-and-true family man forced into the unthinkable. Admittedly, it is hard not to smirk at the need to include intense scenes of fight training early on to justify how an “everyman” who looks like Jason Momoa is able to fight like Jason Momoa.
Ray is tragically forced to watch his wife (Adria Arjona) die after pharmaceutical company BioPrime takes the generic version of her cure off the market to turn a larger profit. After he calls into a local news show and publicly threatens to kill the company’s CEO, a journalist emerges to tell Ray he has proof of illegal activity. This all moves at quite the quick pace, which is appreciated.

Big Pharma are killers, and they take a resounding beating, in “Sweet Girl” — literally. An actioner about a father who responds to personal tragedy by going on a bloodthirsty rampage with his teen daughter in tow, Brian Andrew Mendoza’s feature debut is a giddily outlandish exploitation throwback, featuring Jason Momoa as a grieving bruiser whose answer for everything is violence, violence and more violence. Delivering the sort of R-rated macho carnage that was all the rage in the ’80s and ’90s, when it debuts on Netflix on Aug. 20.
Following some cornball voiceover that accompanies the sight of Ray Cooper (Momoa) leaping off the roof of Pittsburgh’s Pnc Park in front of FBI agent Sarah Meeker (Lex Scott Davis), “Sweet Girl” rewinds to detail the misfortune that befalls Ray when his wife Amanda (Adria Arjona) falls ill with cancer. Hope briefly arrives when Ray and his 18-year-old daughter Rachel...

"You knew going after powerful people was a dangerous business." Netflix has dropped the official trailer for an action thriller titled Sweet Girl, marking the feature directorial debut of producer Brian Andrew Mendoza. Produced by and starring Jason Momoa, the film is about a devastated husband who vows to bring justice to the people responsible for his wife's death while protecting the only family he has left, his daughter. Sounds intense. Don't mess with Momoa! This is set primarily in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city we don't often see many action movies set in. Isabela Merced stars as his daughter Rachel, with Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Adria Arjona, Raza Jaffrey, Justin Bartha, Lex Scott Davis, Amy Brenneman, and Michael Raymond-James. This looks promising, but I'm not so sure it's going to be a total knock out. At least Momoa looks badass, as always. Taking on Big Pharma! Bring 'em down, Momoa. Check it out below.

Though he's now leading a superhero franchise, Jason Momoa didn't always lead a glamorous lifestyle. While feeling "homesick" filming Denis Villeneuve's forthcoming Dune, the actor took to Instagram to reflect on the time he drove through Ireland and slept in a van with his friend, producer Brian Andrew Mendoza, after not being able to afford a flight home during a break in production on the first season of Game of Thrones.
Alongside a photo of himself lying on air mattresses in said van, Momoa wrote, "We were [too] broke to fly home so we rented a panel van aka Uhaul in Belfast and drove around beautiful amazing Ireland searching for the greatest pint of Guinness. Turns out it's perfect everywhere." He added, "So many wonderful people and stories. I treasure those times. It was the simplest moments I remember the most. I still miss my family. Been a long road...

Oeding is an award-winning director of short films, whose work has so far embraced a multitude of genres – from thriller (Interpretation) to drama (Wake), to science fiction (Lifted). With Braven, the helmer will draw from that experience behind the camera, as...
