As the final month of 2014 approaches, two companies with close ties to the Internet are looking to discover the topics that most energized fans this past year. Online video network Maker Studios has teamed up with pop culture encyclopedia Wikia for The 2014 Year In Fandom, which will explore the most popular cultural phenomena of the past 12 months. In order to select the subjects it would feature in Year Of Fandom, Wikia ranked its database through its Wikia Activity Metric, which measures "total audience, size/complexion of the body of content, and usage momentum" for all of the topics on the site. Once the top subjects were selected, Wikia turned to Maker Studios partners like Noodlerella, JakeMcCoyNetwork, and ThatWasHistory, who will reenact the best moments in a series of videos that will be released on Wikia, Maker.TV, and the YouTube channels of both Maker and Wikia. “Video is such an...

It was almost 50 years ago that Gene Roddenberry began developing Star Trek and its tales of the ever-rational United Federation of Planets (which values connection and communication above conquest) and noble, shining Starfleet (which devotes its powerful engines to exploration and insight).
Those concepts launched one of the most persistent mythologies in American pop culture (on television alone there have been six series with 700-plus episodes over 30 years) and they seem to echo also in Trek Initiative, a just-announced venture from Roddenberry Entertainment that is taking a Starfleet approach to the a unruly universe known as the Internet.

After a slight but exquisitely torturous delay, Comic-Con 2012 hit the ground running in Hall H with the panel for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2."
Comic-Con President John Rogers kicked things off by expressing his condolences to the family of Gisela G., the fan who was killed earlier this week when she was struck by a car while waiting in line to get into the "Twilight" panel.
Eric Moro of Wikia, who served as the panel's moderator, then introduced Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Stephenie Meyer and little Mackenzie Foy to the stage. Director Bill Condon wasn't able to attend due to being in London for scoring sessions on the film, but he had a pre-recorded greeting that included the announcement that they were about to see the first seven minutes of "Breaking Dawn - Part 2."
Warning: Spoilers!
The clip picked up right where "Part 1" left off:...

Seth MacFarlane made his first trip to SXSW this year, and he brought a surprise with him: his Ted star Mark Wahlberg, who somehow came off as beleaguered and charming in equal measure at a Q&A Sunday. During a 90-minute conversation at the Vimeo Theater in the Austin Convention Center during SXSW, MacFarlane ranged over his remarkable animation and singing career, artfully cut down hecklers, previewed never-before-seen footage of his new Universal comedy and fawned over his star. The event was a definite highlight of the weekend thus far. Moderator Eric Moro from Wikia walked MacFarlane through the

Amctv is known for ‘going there’ in terms of kinetic, challenging drama that you just can’t take your eyes off – with The Walking Dead, AMC is taking intense human storytelling to an even darker dimension. If you weren’t made a believer with the last bit of video goodness AMC released, The Walking Dead trailer, I double zombie dare you to take in this marvelous bit of storytelling. If you are unfamiliar with Robert Kirkman’s comic series of the same name, I suggest you focus on the number of times you hear the words “character” and “story.” Yes, anyone can pull zombie hokum out of their butt, what Kirkman started in the comic, and Frank Darabont is channeling to the screen, is nothing short of a dark fairy tale into the shadow filled groves of the human psyche. The Walking Dead would be scary, without zombies. Don’t worry though,...

"Let's get our zombie on," IGN's Eric Moro welcomes the crowd Friday morning (July 23) at Comic-Con.
AMC's "The Walking Dead," which will launch practically worldwide in October, packs the house to overflowing.
Anticipation has been high -- not just because of the huge zombie fan base -- but also because the photos released so far look cinematic and worthy of AMC's high standards for quality programming.
The crowd is treated to a look at the series. Any fan of the comic books will see it's almost exactly like the comic book, characters, images and all. We see Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) as he's shot and then wakes up into a world full of zombies. It's actually a thing of beauty from start to finish, and the zombies -- finally we see them in motion -- don't disappoint. The Walker Brothers' "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" is a pitch perfect choice for the first-look.

Flynn Lives! I knew these Encom badges being sent out were more than just swag! A press release has been posted on the official (viral) website this morning for Encom International and a new video featuring Bruce Boxleitner as Encom's "Executive Consultant" Alan Bradley has been posted on IGN. Looks like the Tron Legacy viral is about to really explode soon. The press release has information about an upcoming press conference being held in San Francisco on April 2nd starting at 8Pm. And get this, the "meet-up" is being held at a huge industrial plaza in downtown San Francisco. Is this Joker viral all over again, I hope? I've included an embed of the video below, in which Bradley talks about what's going on in a faux-interview with IGN's Eric Moro. The press release says that Bradley "will introduce the latest addition to the Encom International product library" next Friday.

Last year, we got a hold of a documentary called Reformat The Planet and caught wind of the 8-Bit music craze. Because of that documentary, and friends of ours who were part of this movement, we put together a showcase of great 8-Bit musicians in the abandoned Salvation Army space that was later converted into The Highball. We’re doing another screening of this fantastic documentary to prep our minds for another Datapop show. A show that is bigger, better and has twenty different artists performing for two nights! It’s going to be an epic party, and we would love for you to join us! We’re doing a Free Screening of Reformat The Planet on Monday, and then the Alamo, along with New York City’s 8bitpeoples, 2 Player productions, and the people behind the Blip Festival have joined forces to create Datapop 3.0!

Anybody anticipating Astro Boy's big screen debut in October, should stop right now, as the clip shown at yesterday's Comic Con looked generic and cheap. Moderated by IGN Movies editor, Eric Moro, the crowd seemed less enthusiastic after seeing the clip than Moro did, with only a few of them clapping after seeing the scene on the screen. Granted, it was a little rough around the edges-there was no sound at parts, but that was about it. That still doesn't keep this scene, in which Astro Boy first learns the ropes of how to use his rocket boots, from falling flat on its face. Astro Boy, if you don't know him, is a pretty iconic character. He's been around since the late 1950s, and this is actually his first big screen movie. But if this is what it's going to turn out like, with the animation looking more in tune...
