- Hungary-born Martin had been trained as an acrobat as a youth. He started the knife-throwing act with his wife, Elizabeth, who worked with him for 30 years. In the last years of his life, his daughter joined him in the act.

On 27 September, he was driving, with his wife and daughter as passengers, en route to a theater engagement to Davenport, Iowa. He lost control of his car and it overturned, his wife and daughter received minor injuries.
