The year of 2022 was extremely fruitful for remarkable horror films, as we saw such genre’s gems as Pearl, Barbarian, Men, and Scream. All these films demonstrated the current trend that implies moving away from the jumpscares. Nevertheless, they make a movie kind of nostalgic and appealing for today's veterans of the genre.
Luckily, there was a movie, originally set for release on Paramount+, that became a worldwide commercial success just because of the proper use of this horror mechanic. Two years after its release, it’s now conquering Netflix’s global chart.
Its plot revolves around Dr. Rose Cotter, a therapist who witnesses a bizarre suicide of a patient and later has the visions of it tormenting her. She can’t explain the horrifying hallucinations she is seeing, and that’s why she starts strongly believing it is a supernatural entity from another world that takes more and more control over her life.

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

Filmmaker Parker Finn has experienced a career start that most can only dream of. After his 11-minute horror short "Laura Hasn't Slept" screened at SXSW 2020, Finn signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to adapt it into a feature-length film, "Smile," which stars Sosie Bacon as a psychotherapist who becomes targeted by a sadistic demon. After witnessing a patient's suicide, she's plagued by hallucinations of people she knows staring at her with very creepy smiles, and finds herself unable to trust anything she sees or hears.
"Smile" grossed more than $217 million at the box office, a massive success given its $17 million budget, and a sequel was soon greenlit, with Finn returning as writer and director. Kyle Gallner, whose character survived the last movie and was implied to be the demon's next target, has returned for "Smile 2," and is joined by new cast members Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt, Dylan Gelula,...

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and now she has a co-star. Deadline reports that Scott is being joined in the cast by Lukas Gage, whose previous credits include episodes of Euphoria, The White Lotus, You, and the soon-to-wrap-up Fargo season 5. I first saw Gage in the Blumhouse horror production Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss.
Details on the characters Scott and Gage will be playing in Smile 2 have not been revealed. Plot details are also being kept under wraps.
Smile was based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept (watch it Here), which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category.

It’s almost time to turn that frown upside down again as Smile 2 casts Lukas Gage alongside Naomi Scott in the sequel.
Smile, Parker Finn’s deliciously creepy horror film, was a bit of an unexpected hit for Paramount back in 2022. Horror has always been a bankable genre; low production costs but decent box office returns is the recipe for success, but Smile was also pretty well received by critics.
A sequel was greenlit almost immediately, because those pesky Hollywood studios like to strike while the iron is hot. Finn is reportedly returning to write and direct the sequel, which doesn’t have an official title yet. Naomi Scott was reported to play the lead and now, as reported by Deadline, Lukas Gage is joining her.

Naomi Scott, who memorably played Princess Jasmine in Disney’s big-budget Aladdin remake, is set to star in Paramount’s highly anticipated horror sequel, Smile 2. The film, which already had an October 18, 2024 release date, has been on the fast track ever since the first film scored an amazing $217 million at the global box office. Not bad for a movie that was originally planned as a direct-to-streaming film.
According to Deadline, Scott’s role and the premise of the film are being kept under wraps. Apparently the role was a hot one for a lot of up-and-coming young actors, with Scott nailing the part thanks to her status as a rising star. While she’s never really gotten the right breakout role yet (the Charlie’s Angels reboot she was in flopped), Scott seems primed to make it to the next level, and a juicy part in a horror franchise might be just the ticket.

2022's "Smile" was a sleeper hit, but audiences weren't sleeping well after watching that scary experience.
The film follows Rose (Sosie Bacon), a therapist who witnesses hysterical patient Laura (Caitlin Stasey) kill herself while brandishing a sinister smile. Soon, Rose sees other people wearing the grin and promising her she'll die in a week. Our heroine realizes that she's the latest link in a chain of demonic serial killings; her curse is spread by trauma, and unless she wants to kill someone and traumatize an onlooker, she must confront her own past.
"Smile" is an underdog success story worthy of Hollywood. On a production budget of only $17 million, the movie grossed $217 million, becoming the biggest original horror movie of 2022 in a year filled with successes for the genre. The film had originally been slated for a Paramount+ release but was moved to theaters after positive test screenings.

Scream VI was named best movie on Sunday night at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, which pivoted at the last minute from live to pretaped due to the writers strike,
The film also won best fight for Courteney Cox (as Gale Weathers) and the killer Ghostface, the latter of whom accepted both awards via pretaped video.
Accepting best movie, Ghostface quipped that there is finally an answer to the question, “What is your favorite scary movie?” — a reference to a classic line of dialogue from the franchise.
The Last of Us also was a big winner, taking three awards, including best show. Star Pedro Pascal was named best hero, while he and Bella Ramsey also were named best duo. Stranger Things won two awards.
The show was held amid the ongoing writers strike, which led host Drew Barrymore to drop out in a show of support for the striking scribes.

While the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards weren't held live on May 7, some of Hollywood's biggest stars still got their moment during the prerecorded show. In the lead-up to Sunday, the ceremony planned for Barker Hangar in Los Angeles was scrapped amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore stepped back from the gig in support of the striking writers, and the decision to do without a red carpet closely followed. Heading into the weekend, it was confirmed that the event would not be held in its original form.
Still, big names accepted their popcorn trophies through video clips, including Tom Cruise, who was piloting a plane while expressing his gratitude for his win for best performance in a movie for "Top Gun: Maverick."
