When you think of HBO's classic mid-'00s series "The Wire," it's the characters that come to mind first -- people like McNulty (Dominic West), D'Angelo, Kima (Sonja Sohn), or Stringer Bell (Idris Elba). All of them have their place in the show's vast tapestry, but their stories never feel manufactured or inauthentic. Their major failures and small triumphs echo and clash against those of others, comprising the major drama of the show. And Stringer, the ambitious climber at the top of the show's Barksdale criminal empire, had some of the show's most engaging material. Of course, it helped that he was played by a future movie star.
While you can now see him on the big screen fighting monstrous lions in "Beast" or playing a romantic Djinn in a George Miller film, Idris Elba's work in "The Wire" some 20 years earlier was much more low-key. Stringer is nothing like the typical fantasy gangster.

The late, great actor Michael K. Williams was always honest, and his honesty shone through in his portrayal of one of the most indelible TV characters of all time. As Omar Little, the openly gay gangster who ruled the Baltimore streets for five seasons of David Simon's "The Wire," Williams brought gravitas and emotion to a role that in lesser hands could have been a misfire. Yet the actor took the intriguing depth that was already on the script page and elevated them, turning Omar into a man as complex as the lore that would eventually surround his season 5 demise.
Williams' memoir, "Scenes From My Life," was published posthumously this summer, and in it the actor wrote at length about the role of Omar. From the pressure he felt as a Black man representing his community, to the inspiration he took from relatives and local figures he grew up around,...

As new HBO crime drama "We Own This City"grips audiences, with /Film's Josh Spiegel calling it "vast and existentially bleak," many are revisiting series creator David Simon's prior projects, notably the early-aughts drama "The Wire." Not only does the Baltimore-based series have some cast overlap, they both share an intense engagement with a wide moral spectrum of characters, and none of whom are what they seem.
One of the more compelling characters (hard to say when nearly all of them are) on "The Wire" is known as "Snoop," played by Baltimore native Felicia Pearson. One of the most feared enforcers of drug...

“The Wire’s” Felicia Pearson and Ed Burns are teaming up to develop a limited series based on Pearson’s life, Variety has learned exclusively.
The show is currently titled “A.K.A. Snoop” and would delve into the hardship Pearson endured growing up in Baltimore. Burns and Pearson are co-writing the series. Burns will executive produce along with Philip Michelson of Moondog Films. No network or streaming service is currently attached.
Born three months premature to a crack addicted mother, Pearson was given little chance of survival at birth. She ultimately grew up as a gay Black woman in a foster home in a neighborhood plagued by drugs and violence. She dealt drugs as a teenager before being convicted of second degree murder and spending over six years in prison.
After her release, she met “The Wire” star Michael K. Williams, who brought her to the set. She was subsequently written into the show,...

'Chi-Raq' with Teyonah Parris. 'Chi-Raq' movie review: The return of the Spike Lee of old The star of Spike Lee's Chi-Raq is an astounding young actress named Teyonah Parris (Dear White People); she plays Lysistrata – the name of the titular character in Aristophanes' comedy from about 411 Bce. That Greek play is about one woman's attempt to end the Peloponnesian War (a messy thing involving Athenians and Spartans, among others) by soliciting all Athenian women to withhold sex until peace is negotiated. It would have been a damn good idea to end a war. It was a great idea for a play. And it is a wonderful concept for a satirical film set amongst the very wars being fought on the streets of Chicago and in so many other cities around the world, here on the planet of angry men and their powerful guns. Scary boyfriend and city The Lysistrata...

The first image from Spike Lee's Kickstarter project, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, is here courtesy of Black Film, and you can check it out right here. Look for the flick to premiere on Sunday, June 22, at the 18th Annual American Black Film Festival.
Zaraah Abrahams, Stephen Tyrone Williams, Michael K. Williams, Felicia Pearson, Steven Hauck, and Elvis Nolasco star in the film, which focuses on human beings who are addicted to blood. It's a new kind of love story (and not a remake of Blacula).
“It’s scary. Humorous. Bloody. Sexy,” said Lee in a previous interview, adding that the film uses blood as a “metaphor. As we all know, human beings have many addictions. Drugs, sex, alcohol, power, money, Air Jordans [laughs]. In this one they’re addicted to blood. We shot in New York, Martha’s Vineyard... We shot it in 16 days, and we were one day ahead of schedule.

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Michael K. Williams, Felicia Pearson, Elvis Nolasco
While his “reimagining” of Chan Park-wook’s Oldboy was one of the biggest flops of 2013 (and, unnecessarily so), we’re still excited to see what the end product will be of Lee’s infamous Kickstarter funded film project. Details have been ominous and scant (and that glorious poster art, to die for). While his last self-funded film, 2012’s Red Hook Summer suffered from some wooden acting (though the second half of the film is actually quite well done), this marks an intriguing change of pace for Lee. While the biggest problem with the Oldboy rehash was perhaps the general lack of interest, the opposite effect should take place with the memorably titled Da’ Sweet Blood of Jesus. IMdB...

Four real-life outlaws meet up in the town of Langston, Oklahoma to play a risky game. The winner of their shootout gets to collect their collected bounty: $80,000. The losers? Well, the losers will “die by dawn.” Such is the plot of director Jeymes Samuel‘s new short film, They Die By Dawn, which stars Michael K. Williams as Nat Love and Erykah Badu as Stagecoach Mary. The twist? Every character in the film is a historical figure who actually lived in the Old West. Oh, and all but three characters are African-American.
The film premiered last night in New York at the TriBeCa Film Center in an event co-sponsored by Bulleit Bourbon. We got a chance to talk to Samuel last night about his love of Westerns and his desire to reclaim black history. Sons of Anarchy Season 5 Episode 9, “Andare Pescare”
“My conscience is clear.” – Clay
“That was something that never got in your way.” – Bobby
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from five seasons of Sons of Anarchy, it’s that Clay (Ron Perlman) is hands-down one of the vilest (and luckiest) characters in TV history. He’s up there with Snoop (Felicia Pearson) on The Wire, Sherry Palmer (Penny Johnson) on 24 and Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) on Game of Thrones – characters you just wish were dead because they are so repulsively evil.
In Episode 5.9, “Andare Pescare,” Clay once again escaped Mister Mayhem. After receiving a lead on Frankie Diamonds’ location from the mafia, the club went up to the cabin where Frankie was hiding. Samcro had voted in favor of Frankie’s death for his wrong doings. While this would have benefitted Clay, Jax and Bobby needed Frankie alive in order...

For a man who has created such gripping tales as "Generation Kill" and "Homicide: Life on the Street," it looks like David Simon has a pretty good sense of humor too.

Four stars of TV drama The Wire have reunited to make a musical version of the show.
Sonja Sohn, Andre Royo, Felicia Pearson and Larry Gillard Jr. agreed to appear in the short film for comedy video website Funny or Die.
They are seen smiling and dancing on camera, and highlights of the clip include Royo's character Bubbles trying to quit drugs with the help of a group of singers, and a recreation of the show's famous scene where character D'Angelo Barksdale used chess pieces to explain the drug hierarchy in Baltimore, Maryland.
The programme, which ran on U.S. network HBO between 2002 and 2008, portrayed the inner workings of politics, police, the media and the drugs trade in Baltimore.

In comedy, timing is everything, and the creative minds at Funny or Die timed their spoof of The Wire just right with a musical adaptation released on the show's 10th anniversary.

Most TV critics hail HBO's gritty, five-season drama "The Wire" as one of the greatest shows ever, but you can't help but wonder how much better it could have been as a musical, right? Ok, probably not, but the folks over at Funny or Die are giving it a go in the parody video "The Wire: The Musical," featuring original cast members Michael Kenneth Williams as Omar, Sonja Sohn as Kima, Larry Gillard Jr. as D'Angelo Barksdale, Andre Royo as Bubbles and Felicia Pearson as Snoop.
Omar gets an upbeat, Broadway-style number, singing, "When Omar go a-huntin all the slingers shout my name. They ask, 'My oh my yo, how you survivin' this game?... You gotta whistle babe, before the shotty goes boom." Bubbles and his backup singers, meanwhile, croon, "Come on Bubs. Come on Bubs. Stop doin' drugs. Stop doin' drugs. My name is Bubs. I sniff the drugs.

Ten years ago this month, "The Wire" premiered on HBO. While the show at first was mostly met with indifference, was routinely ignored by the Emmys and almost always faced cancellation from season to season, the show has obviously posthumusly grown in stature and is now regarded as one of the greatest shows to ever appear on television. Created by ex- Baltimore police reporter David Simon with the assistance of former Baltimore police detective Ed Burns, in many ways, "The Wire" changed the game of TV with its scope of vision and longtail patience.
Even some of the cast didn't understand the scope of the show. "I thought David Simon bamboozled the black cast when he brought all the white actors in to tell the docks story line [in Season 2]," Michael K. Williams, who played the fan-favorite character, Omar, said in a must-read oral history piece about the show in Maxim. "I was like,...

"I'm pretty sure David Simon doesn't know they're doing this. But if he did, he'd love it!" Funny or Die takes on "The Wire," inappropriate musical adaptations, jazz hands and creator David Simon's grumpiness about how the series has been broken down in pop culture in the site's new -- and totally great -- video. It reunites plenty of the show's alums, including Michael Kenneth Williams (who shows off his dance skills), Sonja Sohn, Andre Royo and Felicia Pearson. Best moment? I'd vote for Williams' jig to "The Farmer in the Dell."...

The Wire actress Felicia Pearson has been handed a seven-year suspended prison sentence and three years' probation after pleading guilty to a drug charge.
The star, who played drug dealer and assassin Snoop in the hit TV series, was among a group of 38 suspects arrested during a sting operation carried out by police in Baltimore, Maryland in March.
Pearson initially denied counts of conspiring to sell heroin and aiding and abetting, but struck a deal with Baltimore authorities at the last minute.
Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill approved the plea deal for a single charge of conspiracy to sell heroin in court on Monday and gave Pearson the suspended sentence, with credit for time already served while she was awaiting trial.
The 31 year old insists she only agreed to the deal so she could put an end to her legal issues and now she's planning to relocate to Los Angeles - to move away from her troubled past.

Pearson initially pleaded not guilty to counts of conspiring to sell heroin and aiding and abetting, but struck a deal with Baltimore authorities at the last minute in a bid to put an end to her legal troubles, according to the 31 year old's attorney, Benjamin C. Sutley.
He says, "More than anything she wanted to close this matter and move on... She learned a valuable lesson about how some loyalties you keep and others drag you down."
Sutley insists Pearson did not play a big part in the alleged drug ring and she is due to plead guilty to a misdemeanour conspiracy charge in court on Monday.
Her trial was expected to begin on Tuesday.
Pearson is no stranger to legal controversy - she was incarcerated for more than six years for killing a woman when she was just 14.

Snoop has admitted to her role in a villainous ensemble cast. Felicia Pearson, who played a drug dealer's assassin of the same name on The Wire, has craftily kept herself out of prison by pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin for her role in a Baltimore drug ring. By cutting a deal a day before her trial was set to begin, Pearson received credit for time served and a suspended seven-year sentence, as well as three years of supervised probation. During her probationary period she'll be allowed to leave Maryland on a provisional basis to work. The actress, who originally pleaded not guilty, hasn't exactly changed her tune, however. "I would have been found not...

Snoop is innocent. Or so she says. Felicia Pearson, the actress who played the drug-dealing assassin in HBO's seminal crime series The Wire, has pleaded not guilty to drug conspiracy charges Tuesday. And now she's going to trial. Per the Baltimore Sun, the 30-year-old Pearson turned up in Baltimore Circuit Court to enter her plea but declined to talk to reporters afterward. Trial was set for Aug. 9. The actress, currently out on $50,000 bail, was one of 64 people rolled up in a drug sting initiated by the feds and local authorities. The operation, dubbed Usual Suspects, recalled the crime-busting storylines of the cable drama that launched her to fame. Unfortunately for...

The actress, who played the drug-dealing assassin Snoop on HBO's The Wire, has been freed from a Baltimore jail on $50,000 bond after her lawyers ironed out a deal with prosecutors in her drug conspiracy case. So just what were the terms exactly? Following a hearing today in Baltimore Circuit Court, the 30-year-old Pearson agreed to wear an electronic ankle bracelet that will monitor her movements. Baltimore — Actress Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, who played a murderous member of a Baltimore drug gang in the hit HBO series "The Wire," is shocked to be facing charges of conspiring to sell heroin, her attorney said Friday.
"She's a little bit dismayed at being in position that she didn't place herself in," attorney Paul Gardner said.
Pearson, 30, who was ordered held without bail Friday, denies the charges. Her attorney plans to file a writ of habeas corpus and motion for bail review Monday.
Pearson is one of 64 people charged Thursday in "Operation Usual Suspects," a joint state-federal prosecution of an alleged east Baltimore drug gang. Sad news today for fans of great television. One of the many things that set the HBO series The Wire apart was its verisimilitude. This extended to the creators casting many actual former police officers and criminals in supporting roles. Felicia Pearson was one of the best examples of this; a former drug dealer who made an indelible mark as the terrifying murderer Snoop. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Pearson was one of 30 arrested this morning in a real life drug raid.

The following piece discusses the series finale of "The Wire" (which aired Sunday on HBO). If you're a "Wire" fan, I recommend watching the finale before reading what's below.
An image has been in my mind since I watched the series finale of “The Wire.” It’s a scene of a character named Dukie preparing to shoot up drugs.
It’s only a brief glimpse at Dukie’s fate, but it’s heartbreaking.
We met Dukie (Jermaine Crawford) and three other eighth-grade boys two years ago, in Season 4 of “The Wire.” He was a shy, smart, gawky youth who didn’t quite fit in on the tough streets of West Baltimore.
He blossomed when his teacher, a former cop, started giving Dukie clean clothes and soap and showing him how to use a computer. As he gained confidence and shed some of his reticence, it was impossible not to care about Dukie,...
