“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
Despite only having four Fridays, October 2017 is jam-packed with films. And so many of their studios apparently like boxes. Tiny boxes, big boxes, boxes forming shapes, and boxes in frames. Whether it’s the uninspired Marshall (open October 13) grid (link) overshadowing its predecessor’s starkly bold frame (link) or The Meyerowitz Stories (limited October 13) cribbing off the lo-fi aesthetic of old album covers with film still boxes (link), the boredom is mind-numbingly intense. Powell & Pressburger’s big-scale historical epic is perhaps the best show ever about an old-school naval encounter between battleships. The first half depicts the showdown between England and Germany in the South Atlantic, and the second half a tense diplomatic game in the neutral country of Uruguay. Peter Finch, Bernard Lee and Anthony Quayle shine as sea captains.

Get ready for remakes, sequels, and festival holdovers because it’s … a month of the year. Sometimes I miss the days of my childhood when there’d only be one new film a week, an era when no one thought remaking an animated film shot-for-shot with real actors would make money. But it’s invigorating nonetheless to see all those tinier films constantly stepping up to go against these behemoths and earn acclaim and cash while proving creativity does still exist.

Courtney Barnett brought a mixed bag of crunchy riffs and social anxiety to The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Wednesday with a performance of "Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go to the Party."
The Australian rocker (clad in a Midnight Oil T-shirt for good measure) and her band breezed through the uptempo cut, which boasts a hook as infectious as its message is endearingly neurotic: "I wanna go out, but I wanna stay home."
"Nobody Really Cares" appears on Barnett's 2015 LP, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

Marvel’s Agent Carter on Tuesday night brought its season to a satisfying conclusion — but was there almost too much closure, not enough dangling threads?
VideosIn New S.H.I.E.L.D. Promo, Skye Quakes Over Her Inhuman Secret
Picking up where last week’s episode left off, the Ssr arrives at the movie house to find 47 innocents dead, the cause as shocking as the grim scene itself: “They killed each other.” The trigger for the melee is uncovered by Sousa, who inadvertently gets a whiff of the Item 17 gas and then violently lunges for Thompson, before getting subdued.

Chicago – With the 2014 Major League All-Star game coming up next week on July 15th, that break is a time to reflect on the current season and your favorite team. At the “Hot Stove Cool Music” event in Chicago on June 20th, HollywoodChicago.com got in the All-Star spirit by talking with the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein, plus baseball writer and former Espn commentator, Peter Gammons.
Hot Stove Cool Music was co-founded by Peter Gammons in 2000, and began in Boston. Theo Epstein and his family charity organization, “Foundation to Be Named Later” partnered with the event shortly thereafter, and in total it has raised more than $5.5 million dollars, creating positive opportunities for disadvantaged children and families. Cub Charities was also a co-sponsor of the night, which featured Gammons, Epstein and other Chicago talents rocking on the Cabaret Metro stage in Wrigleyville, about one block from the Chicago Cubs home base,...

For those who are unaware. I am an Australian. And for a vast majority of my life I have been involved with the local music industry. I have played with the best and brightest this country has to offer from all walks of life, from all genres of music and who are skilled in all types of musical instruments.
And in my career spanning two plus decades (I started very young). working within every known aspect from roadie to performer, agent to stockroom boy, I have not only witnessed the potential for musical greatness that this corner of the globe was once famous for, but have been front and centre to experience the catastrophic decline this once genre defining industry has suffered in the past 15 years.

The rich get richer, the poor get the picture, as noted U.S. policy experts Midnight Oil once said. And in America at the outset of the 21st century, the picture for those at the ass end of the wealth distribution spectrum is getting very bleak indeed. As we learn in Inequality for All, earnings for the "1 percent" have doubled in the last 35 years, while wages for workers have diminished dramatically. Former Secretary of Labor (and current University of California, Berkeley, professor) Robert Reich, as informative and self-deprecating as always, examines this gulf. The doc is centered around a lecture to his public policy class and supplemented by interviews with some of these new über-rich as well as Americans in danger of falling through the cracks. Using income tax data going ...

What do all of these bands and musicians have in common? They all hail from a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountain ranges, of drought and flooding rains.

The other day I was talking to a documentary filmmaker I admire quite a bit and mentioned how I thought Searching For Sugar Man was a lock for Best Documentary in this year's Oscar race. He cocked his head and gave me a funny look. "Do you really think so?" he asked, pointing out how the viewer doesn't really get to know Rodriguez in the film. You get to meet his daughters and the two guys who were searching for him, but you don't meet Rodriguez himself. "The movie isn't true," he went on to say. "They left out a lot of the story. He wasn't as obscure as they make it out in the movie." To say I was surprised by this observation would be an understatement. Searching For Sugar Man has been mentioned by many of my friends have been raving about Malik Bendjelloul's doc since the...

I.m primarily a director and cinematographer, but I have always really enjoyed editing. In the .80s, I was cutting music videos on film on a six plate 16mm Steenbeck, including Midnight Oil.s Beds are Burning, and was an early-adopter of digital editing in the .90s, helping set up the Radical Transmission Syndicate, one of Sydney.s first community access Nle suites with a Media 100.

On September 29, 1991, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video premiered on MTV's "120 Minutes," an event that, in the years that followed, would come to signify the beginning of rock's great renaissance and usher in a cultural shift that would define a generation.
Of course, back then, it was just another video on another Sunday night, and no one — not even "120" host Dave Kendall — thought otherwise.
"I have to say, quite honestly, as soon as I heard that record and saw that video, I had no idea they were going to be as huge as they were," he laughed. "I was very, very impressed. I was moved but I really didn't have any idea it would explode to the extent it did. There's the truth.

Instead of Auld Lang Syne this New Year's Eve, let's discuss Old Lame Singers. Or maybe I'll just leave the discussing to you - Lordtopus knows I'm going to need entertainment tonight as I sit home with my kids like I do every New Year's Eve. For you single Pajibans, it's all going to parties, drinking it up, sleeping with random strangers, throwing up and hangovers. For those of us with little twerps (Congratulations Stardust!) it's just drinking and vomit with extra noise. But in the end I'd rather be home celebrating; its safer, cozy and warm and I know the toilet seat is clean.
Here's the list:

The third series of The Librarians is bigger than its predecessors. Miguel Gonzalez visited the Melbourne set of the cult ABC comedy.
Most of the time, the Melbourne Showgrounds are an exhibition and functions venue, but occasionally, they are also the home of the Middleton Interactive Learning Centre and her manager, head librarian Frances O’Brien. ABC TV’s comedy The Librarians – launched in 2007 – was originally shot at an old car dealership in Melbourne, but people kept trying to come in thinking it was a real library. Taking advantage of the fire that destroyed the original library in the first series, the show moved during its second season to building 13 at the Showgrounds, a much more private and spacious location.
