Every year internationally renowned identical twin filmmakers, the Soska Sisters ("American Mary," "See No Evil 2"), invite you to bleed for an incredibly good cause: Women inHorror’s PSA for a Massive Blood Drive . Donating blood is something many people find off-putting and terrifying. By using humor, innovation, and provocative imagery, this PSA will encourage viewers to face their fears and donate to the cause.
For this occasion, the Soska Sisters are launching an anthology of horror shorts directed by celebrated women filmmakers from around the world.
Women in Horror Recognition Month (WiHM) assists female genre artists in gaining opportunities, exposure, and education through altruistic events, printed material, articles, interviews, and online support. The collaborative vision is a world wherein all individuals have equal opportunity to create, share, and engage in freedom of expression.
The Soska Sisters and Women in Horror have invited award winning Canadian filmmaker Patricia Chica to present her darkly comic short
"Ripe N’ Bloody" to be included in this anthology of films from some of the most innovative, unique, and irreverent female directors across the globe.
“I am a huge fan of the Soska Twins’ work, so I’m thrilled to be part of this project which supports two causes that are dear to my heart: the empowerment of Women in Film and Blood Donation," says Patricia Chica.
“I started getting involved with blood donation when my mother was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and needed a lot of transfusions in order to survive. It made me realize how important each litter of blood was for the survival of my own mother and all of the patients at the hospital who were suffering from similar conditions. My recent film"Ceramic Tango" dealt with the issue of blood and HIV awareness”, explains the director.
“This PSA is not only aligned with my purpose of making films that serve society and elevate the viewers' consciousness but it was morbidly fun to make! ”, concludes Patricia Chica.
"Ripe N’ Bloody" is a Canadian production that was written by award winning filmmaker-screenwriter Kamal John Iskander ("Jesus Comes to Town," "Montréal Girls"), produced by Patricia Chica, Grace Santos (Odessa, Silk), and veteran Byron A. Martin ("Serpent's Lullaby," "My Babysitter is a Vampire"). The short was executive produced by Tara Kurtz ("Blue Weekend,""Something About Her"), co-executive produced by Adonai Interiano of Hni Productions, and artist Morris Umali. Practical effects were created by Danny McCarthy of 800 Lb Guerilla. Visual effects were created by Henry Lipatov, Anton Golovchenko, and the crew at Fame Cube based in the Ukraine. Director of photography Imad Rhayem, production designer Gabrielle Giraud, and makeup artist Valentina Badaracco round out the production team. Starring Leonard Waldner, Stephen Brewster, Andrea Fletcher, Keira McCarthy, and introducing Marco Reilly.
An expanded version of the short will be presented on the festival circuit during the 2015/2016 season.

Four years after my original guest post “Navigating Rejection With Grace” (May 10, 2011) we’re still navigating plenty of rejection (c’mon, does that really ever end!?) but also proud to share some “wins” – seven years in-the-making! Our doc Finding Hillywood (www.findinghillywood.com) has screened at more than 60 festivals around the world, and is available on iTunes (and a myriad of other digital platforms) this month!
I remember being knee-deep in production and fundraising just to finish our film. Grant-writing, crowd-funding, trying to stay positive, constant highs and lows… it all takes a toll. But then you premiere in front of a packed theater with friends and family who give you an emotional standing ovation, and it feels pretty damn good. Things can only get easier from here, right? We made an inspiring film about the universal power of story and the power of art to heal – themes that should resonate globally.

“Never happen.” That’s how John Cena replied to a comment about a heel turn from Mark Bell and his cameraman at the Supertraining Gym in Sacramento recently. The video was released on Youtube and runs for 7:41 with about 20 seconds of Bell and his friend suggesting a heel turn to Cena.
The discussion about wrestling didn’t last too long. Most of it was about weightlifting, which is something Cena enjoys a lot. There was one other moment where Bell wondered if Cena had it in him to go heel. Cena replied confidently: “Oh I’ve got it in me for sure… I do what they tell me, boss.” In other words, he’s confident he could pull it off although he doesn’t really think they’re going to ask him. He’s got a point there.

Those who have suggested that The Review Show's move from BBC2 to BBC4 signals the end for the programme are wrong, but the reduction to once a month is a travesty
After almost 20 years on mainstream TV, The Review Show is being shunted to BBC4, its weekly slot reduced to a monthly cameo. As John Dugdale wrote in last week's issue, the messages coming from BBC management are, in the words of my fellow panellist Anne McElvoy, "executive code for likely death". I'd known for a while of the quiet euthanasia that was being performed on the programme that I'd loved since, as a pimply teenager, I'd tuned into Tom Paulin, Tony Parsons and Allison Pearson chewing over the cultural significance of Toy Story on the Late Review. Now the world knew too, and a half-hearted #savethereviewshow campaign briefly fizzled into life on Twitter. I made the trip up to...

Flagship BBC2 arts and culture show loses its weekly status but retains presenters Martha Kearney and Kirsty Wark
For nearly 20 years it has brought BBC2 viewers the latest developments in the world of arts and culture, in various incarnations and featuring bickering panellists including Tom Paulin, Allison Pearson and Tony Parsons.
But now The Review Show, one of the BBC's flagship arts programmes, is to be moved from BBC2 to BBC4 and cut from a weekly to monthly slot – as new director general Lord Hall prepares to join the BBC on 2 April from one of the UK's leading arts institutions, the Royal Opera House.
Arts coverage on BBC1 and BBC2 is being cut as a result of the BBC's £700m cost-cutting measures, Delivering Quality First.
The BBC's arts commissioning editor, Mark Bell, said the reduction in arts coverage was minimal across BBC1 and BBC2, amounting to a "couple of hours" a year.

The BBC has announced that The Review Show is to move from BBC Two to BBC Four.
The revamped show will also be reduced from a weekly broadcast to a monthly hour-long episode.
Martha Kearney and Kirsty Wark will remain as presenters in a new primetime slot on the digital channel.
The Review Show has been one of the BBC's flagship arts programmes for nearly 20 years, and features contributors looking back at the week's cultural highlights.
The move has been criticised by various quarters, with Channel 4 News culture editor Matthew Cain tweeting: "Who's going to start a petition to save the BBC's Review Show? I want to sign it!"
It has also been described as a "typical piece of BBC cowardice" by Guardian writer Stephen Moss.
BBC Four controller Richard Klein defended the changes, saying: "The range of topics will be, I think, broader, but also we'll do what...

Gillian Anderson, best known for playing Agent Scully in The X Files, has been unveiled as the new face of Charles Dickens' tormented Miss Havisham, in the BBC's festive adaptation of Great Expectations.
The American actress looks every bit the jilted bride imagined in the Victorian classic, but her performance is sure to be measured against that of Helena Bonham Carter, who is playing the same character in a production to be released next year to coincide with Dickens' 200th anniversary.
The 43-year-old may be best known for her dealings with the supernatural, but she's also previously proven she can do period drama, having been nominated for BAFTA, Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her role as Lady Dedlock in the BBC adaptation of Bleak House in 2005.
The production also stars Ray Winstone as the dastardly Abel Magwitch, David Suchet as Miss Havisham's lawyer, Mr Jaggers, and Douglas Booth...

Remember Chris Gore's 90s online film mag Film Threat? Well new publisher and editor-in-chief Mark Bell bought it in 2010 from Gore and now, bucking current trends, plans to turn it into a quarterly $4.99 glossy print publication, launching in September. According to Folio, FilmThreat.com gets about 250,000 page views a week. Media giant Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher as measured by total daily circulation, confirmed Tuesday that it will lay off 700 employees. Revenue is still down and the company is laying off 3% of employees at newspapers like The Courier-Journal of Louisville, the Cincinnati Enquirer, and the Indianapolis Star.

On April 16th 2011, science fiction author Stephen Hunt sent out a press release to genre websites, including Fgt, announcing a letter of protest signed by 85 authors of sci-fi and fantasy literature sent to the BBC.
This letter, penned by Hunt, complained that the BBC 2 had not covered science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction sufficiently in their World Book Night programming on March 5th, 2011. The programs that particularly bothered Hunt were called “The Books We Really Read”, an episode of The Culture Show, hosted by comedian Sue Perkins and “New Novelists: 12 of the Best.”
Hunt quoted himself in his press release as outlining his contempt for the BBC shows:
Quote:
Fantasy author Stephen Hunt, who organised the protest, commented, “The sneering tone that was levelled towards commercial fiction during The Books We Really Read was deeply counterproductive to the night’s aims of actually encouraging people to read novels. The weight...
