Disney on Wednesday settled a copyright lawsuit from 2017 that alleged that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies infringed upon the plaintiffs’ copyrighted original spec script.
Writers Arthur Lee Alfred II and E. Ezequiel Martinez Jr. along with their producer Tova Laiter in 2017 claimed in a federal court in Colorado that Disney committed “willful infringement of Plaintiff’s original copyrighted expression of themes, settings, dialogue, characters, plot. mood [and] sequence of events contained in an original spec screenplay entitled ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’”
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Copyright claims against successful Hollywood projects are common, but judgments and settlements are rare.
Disney and an attorney for Alfred and Martinez did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

David and Jessica Oyelowo are producing under their Yoruba Saxon banner. The project, written by Ed Ricourt, will also be a possible starring project for the Selma actor.
The original movie, released in 1991, was directed by Joe Johnston and adapted from Dave Stevens’ graphic novel. In that film, which made close to $47 million at the domestic box office and became a fan fave for the studio, a young pilot stumbles onto a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero.

Andrew Bujalski may be best known as the godfather of mumblecore, but “Support the Girls” director’s career took a surprising turn last year when he wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live-action remake of the beloved 1955 animated classic “Lady and the Tramp.” But it’s not uncommon for big studios to turn to more low-key talent to bring an elevated sensibility to a project (see Alex Ross Perry’s “Christopher Robin” screenplay). In a recent conversation out of the BendFilm Festival, moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, Bujalski spoke about molding his vision into a pre-existing property, and what made it (and didn’t make it) into the final film.
“Just when I started batting ideas around with the producer [Brigham Taylor], I really tried to rethink, I tried to kind of take it from scratch,” he said. “There [were] never any illusions that like this was going to be my movie and,...

Pirates of the Caribbean was never meant to be a franchise. Not really. Of course one could also argue the concept was never meant to be a movie either. Originally a theme park ride which opened at Disneyland in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean becoming a movie is the kind of high-concept thrown around by Disney execs huddled at a conference table. Indeed, it was creative executives Brigham Taylor, Michael Haynes, and Josh Harmon who brainstormed the basic plot for a Pirates movie during the same period the studio greenlit The Country Bears and The Haunted Mansion movies. However, what made the eventual Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl a classic came from the type of creative inspiration Disney couldn’t anticipate or control… yet.

The new, live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp dropped on Disney+ on Tuesday — but one of the songs from the classic animated movie is missing.
The new movie does not include “The Siamese Cat Song,” which is sung by a pair of Siamese cats in the 1955 animated version. The sequence, with a tune originally recorded by Peggy Lee, has become controversial for offensive stereotypes in its lyrics and its depiction of the Asian felines.
“This movie obviously did a big re-work on that, and I think it’s an improvement,” star Justin Theroux said of the removed song, in an interview with Yahoo!.

Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp might hate dogs, but Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays the character in the new remake of the canine classic, sure doesn’t!

“Sarah don’t like dogs. Yvette does,” she said with a grin. “Every day on set, I had to yell at beautiful, innocent puppies, which was horrible for me as a person but I think it was hilarious.

It seemed like any other movie premiere.
Journalists and photographers swarmed the red carpet as stars Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux smiled gamely for pictures and struck a pose, just as they would for any other Hollywood screening. Except there was one key difference. The film they were in New York City to promote last week, a live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp,” is helping to usher in a new frontier of moviemaking. Instead of bowing in theaters, it will debut on streaming platform Disney Plus.
“The pressure to perform and deliver a great movie was the same,” says producer Brigham Taylor. “We just set out to tell the best story we could. We’re just trying to connect with people, and ultimately Disney Plus could allow us to find a broader, bigger audience than we could even have found in a theater.”

The divas on display at Tuesday’s special screening of “Lady and the Tramp” were of the four-legged variety. It was a night that brought out A-listers such as Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux, but those stars were outshone by Rose and Monte, the two canine actors who portray the title characters in the live-action remake of the animated classic. Both walked the red carpet, accompanied by trainers, posing for pictures and barking when the klieg lights grew tiresome. Hosted at the iPic in Manhattan, it was an evening that was tailor-made for dog lovers.
“I just adopted a dog recently and he’s taught me so much about commitment, about compassion, about being patient,” said Thompson, who provides the voice of Lady. “This is a film about love, about family, about loyalty, about commitment, about the ways in which love allows us the capacity to challenge our own world views.

Today is Monty’s first National Dog Day as a full-blown celebrity. The scruffy mutt with the enchanting eyes is starring as Tramp in Disney’s live-action Lady and the Tramp remake and is BFFs with Justin Theroux — who will voice Tramp in the new take on the classic — but his life was far less glamorous just a few months ago.
Monty wasn’t born with his muzzle in a silver bowl or into a canine acting dynasty. Not long ago, he was sitting in a cage at a kill shelter in New Mexico, hoping to be adopted before time ran out.

It’s a Bella Notte at D23 this weekend, where Disney+ has dropped the first trailer for the live-action “Lady and the Tramp” remake.
The feature film has some CGI in the vein of “The Lion King,” but those are real dogs acting as both Lady and the Tramp, and yes, they do eat spaghetti. While the famous kiss wasn’t shown in the trailer, which you can watch below, we do see the Lady’s life from puppyhood before she leaves her home to explore the bigger world beyond her comfortable home.
Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux provide the voices of Lady and Tramp, respectively, in the classic Disney love story, and they’re joined by the voices of Janelle Monáe, Sam Elliott, Ashley Jensen and Benedict Wong as some of the other animal characters. The film’s human cast features Kiersey Clemons, Yvette Nicole Brown and Thomas Mann.

The Disney Studios lot morphed into the Hundred Acre Wood on Monday night as stars gathered for the world premiere of the live-action “Christopher Robin.”
A garden-themed red carpet lined the entrance to the theater, with Winnie, Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger sitting in lawn chairs at the start of the carpet.
“Christopher Robin” takes place after the eponymous character (Ewan McGregor) has grown up and lost touch with the important things in life. His childhood friends – Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet – venture into the real world to help Christopher rediscover the joys of family, friendship, and appreciating the simple pleasures of life.
That’s a message that’s very relevant today, McGregor told Variety on the red carpet. “I felt very much it was a timely movie for me,” he said. “I felt that way before I read when it when (director) Marc (Forster) described what he wanted...

The first official trailer for Disney’s Christopher Robin is here! Take a stroll back to the Hundred Acre Woods with Winnie the Pooh and friends.
The trailer is very cute and has some laughs. The concept of the film reminds me a lot of Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991) in that we visit a beloved Disney character in their adulthood where work gets in the way of family. Regardless if it’s a bit unoriginal, I’m all in for this one.

A.A. Milne’s silly old bear is back and looking ever so slightly — and altogether endearingly — scruffy in this new trailer for Disney’s live-action Christopher Robin. It’s the best glimpse we’ve had yet of director Marc Foster’s visually realistic, stitched-at-the-seams take on the Pooh bear, depressed donkey Eeyore, Piglet, Kanga, Roo and the rest of Milne’s menagerie.
The trailer, posted exclusively today on Ellen DeGeneres’ Ellentube, focuses more on the animals than previous teasers that set up the tale’s starting-point dilemma: An adult Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is an overworked London businessman who’s apparently not been spending nearly enough time with wife Evelyn (Hayley Atwell) and daughter Madeline (Bronte Carmichael). When he’s ordered to work yet another weekend, Christopher’s stuffed childhood pals arrive to set things right.
Judging from this trailer, Forster’s approach combines a bit of the familiar with the new. The clean, ’60s-modern look of Disney’s animated versions is replaced here with critters that really do look as if they’ve been pulled from an old toy chest in the attic. It’s an appealing blend.
Hitting theaters August 3, Forster’s Christopher Robin has a screenplay by Alex Ross Perry and Allison Schroeder and a story by Perry based on characters created by Milne and E.H. Shepard. The producers are Brigham Taylor and Kristin Burr with Renée Wolfe and Jeremy Johns serving as executive producers. In addition to McGregor, Atwell, Carmichael and Cummings (who also voices Tigger), the movies features Mark Gatiss as Christopher’s boss, and the voices of Brad Garrett (Eeyore), Toby Jones (Owl), Nick Mohammed (Piglet), Peter Capaldi (Rabbit), and Sophie Okonedo (Kanga).
