Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is an American Western series that premiered late last year. However, it has already received a very positive critical reception, earning an impressive 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the most watched show worldwide on Paramount+.
The show is clearly destined for a series renewal. However, to the surprise of fans, the show's creators have stated that the second season is likely to be very different from the first.
What is Lawmen: Bass Reeves about?
The Western-themed show follows the story of real-life Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, the first African-American to hold the position in the Upper Midwest Territory. Also based on The Bass Reeves book trilogy by Sidney Thompson, the plot of each episode follows Reeves (played by David Oyelowo) as he goes from being held as a slave to becoming one of the most famous lawmen in history.

Star and executive producer David Oyelowo and Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator, showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan said Reeves’ family values were what made him stand out. Oyelowo plays Reeves, a U.S. Marshal after the abolition of slavery.
“The way in for a global audience should be not just appealing to the sensibility of people who love westerns but the family,” Oyelowo said at Contenders TV. “Essentially a Black family which is also something you never see in this time period. As we discussed this, we felt the universal element was going to be the work-life balance as something that everyone can relate to.”
Oyelowo said that Reeves was always trying to get back to his family after his arrests. Reeves’ family values also influenced one of the show’s most memorable antagonists, Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper). Feehan said Pierce represents the antithesis of Reeves.

When it comes to corralling viewers, Taylor Sheridan is hardly all hat, no cattle. The ultra-prolific writer-director’s Yellowstone universe shows and his other Paramount+ dramas perform quite strongly, helping to heavily prop up the streamer with its 63 million subscribers. Naturally, however, some shows outpull others. Here, The Hollywood Reporter takes a closer look at all the titles Sheridan has wrangled so far and how they’ve fared during their rollouts.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains major spoilers for “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” all eight episodes of which are now streaming on Paramount+.
When David Oyelowo first learned about the legend of Bass Reeves — who escaped enslavement to become one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi — nearly a decade ago, the actor-producer set out on a mission to bring the story to the masses.
Oyelowo’s goal was the same as the one he’d set when playing Martin Luther King Jr. in 2014’s “Selma”: Who is the man behind the myth?
Over the course of eight episodes, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” aims to answer that question, filling in the gaps in the historical record about Reeves’ life and career.
“You realize he wasn’t just some saint, or some savior, or someone unattainable in terms of what and who he was,” Oyelowo, who was nominated...

[This story contains spoilers from the season finale of Lawmen: Bass Reeves.]
In the season finale of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the audience witnessed a standoff between former Confederate soldier Esau Pierce (played by Barry Pepper) and the hero lawman Bass Reeves (Golden Globe-nominated David Oyelowo). While Esau seemed to see something admirable in Bass from their day-one encounter (when Reeves was still under the confines of slavery), an unfortunate turn of events toward the end of episode one would forever make Esau a mortal enemy in Bass’ eyes.
And it could not be any other way, says Chad Feehan, showrunner of the Paramount+ series. Having contributed to successful cable network shows such as Ray Donovan (Showtime) and Banshee (Cinemax), Feehan tells The Hollywood Reporter that his friend, executive producer Taylor Sheridan, introducing him to Oyelowo provided the right foundation for the trio to work together in producing what Feehan calls a long-overdue, extensive exploration of the law legend’s...

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” just wrapped on Paramount+. And while the streamer has yet to announce whether it will be coming back for another season, the show’s creator Chad Feehan is absolutely ready to come back.
“I intentionally left some meat on the bone in case we got to this point. Bass’s life is so incredible and it’s so expansive, there is no way that we could hit every major benchmark in his life in 8 or 10 hours or else it would’ve felt almost like a procedural,” Feehan told TheWrap.
And noting the story of the real-life Reeves being forced to arrest his own son in part to save his life, Feehan adds, “I would love to tell that story.”
“Lawman: Bass Reeves” is based on the life of Bass Reeves (played on the show by David Oyelowo), a former slave who became the first Black deputy U.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is more than just a passion project for star and executive David Oyelowo. Now that it’s out (and now that the Hollywood strikes of 2023 are over), he tells TV Insider it’s a “relief” to be able to speak about it. There were seemingly endless obstacles on the path to getting this created. It took the actor eight years to get this story green-lit. During the hard-won production process, extreme changes in weather on set in Texas caused scheduling delays and posed threats to the cast and crews’ health, and on top of it all, the strikes loomed as they were wrapping filming earlier this year. Series creator/showrunner Chad Feehan had to leave set three weeks before they wrapped when the WGA writers’ strike began in May, Oyelowo shares. Suffice it to say it’s been a long journey to get Bass Reeves’ story on-screen,...

Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the latest series in Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s stable, tells an untold story that has been years in the making.

Oyelowo recently told The Hollywood Reporter that when he first pitched the series in 2015, “the whole town turned it down saying, ‘We’re not doing that because no one is doing Westerns.'” When he again went out with the project in 2017, he was told, “Oh, we’re not doing that because everyone is doing Westerns.” Oyelowo said he had a similar journey when getting Selma made, and that it wasn’t until the...

Bass Reeves became an American legend against all odds. He was born into slavery but escaped during adulthood, successfully avoiding recapture until the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery. In the years that followed, he reunited with the love of his life, Jennie Reeves, and they would go on to have 11 children as Bass made a career in law enforcement. Everything about Bass’s life created a sense of justice that’s inalienable from his identity, Lawmen: Bass Reeves star David Oyelowo tells TV Insider. Series creator Chad Feehan previously told us that the Paramount+ series is about the triumph of the human spirit exemplified through Bass (Oyelowo) and Jennie (Lauren E. Banks). Oyelowo calls that a “perfect” description, “because what [Bass] did and went on to do shouldn’t have been possible at that time.” “Three thousand arrests, 32 years in law enforcement, a father to over 10 kids, someone who was enslaved and...

Writer and showrunner Taylor Sheridan is known for creatively exploring and highlighting aspects of American history and culture in his many acclaimed works, ranging from TV series like "Yellowstone" to movies like "Sicario." His most recent project, "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," tells the story of Bass Reeves, a great American legend and Western frontier figure who was the first Black deputy US marshal west of the Mississippi River. In the series, "Selma" actor David Oyelowo plays the role of Reeves alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Dennis Quaid and Donald Sutherland.
The story of Bass Reeves is remarkable: the real figure behind the dramatized series was born into slavery and, according to some reports, managed to capture more than 3,000 outlaws throughout his career as a deputy US marshal, all while enduring the hardships of racism and prejudice in a post-Civil War America. "I think that audiences today need to see stories of triumph,...

Reeves was born into slavery and later became one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals west of the Mississippi. The show explores his story and how he wrestles with the moral and spiritual cost of his career to him and his family.
The show – which is executive produced by Sheridan – premiered Nov.

Television's most sprawling franchise just keeps on trucking along. In no time at all, filmmaker and prolific showrunner Taylor Sheridan has established a vice grip on dads everywhere with his incredibly popular "Yellowstone" series ... but why stop there? He's since expanded the frontier of this universe with a veritable wagon train of spin-offs, sequel series, and even prequels, all of which have enjoyed various degrees of success. Although such grand plans hit a bit of a snag in recent months, first with "Yellowstone" star Kevin Costner parting ways with the production and most recently with the news that the final batch of episodes from the parent series that started it all would be in for a lengthy delay, fans now have another thrilling and star-studded production to look forward to.
Officially titled "Lawmen: Bass Reeves," this latest series was originally conceived as a spin-off from "1883" tentatively known as "1883: The Bass Reeves Story.

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” is here.
The new series, produced by Taylor Sheridan, was created and largely written by showrunner Chad Feehan, who worked closely with the series’ producer and star David Oyelowo. Together, they brought the story of Reeves, an actual historical figure who was one of the first Black U.S. Marshals, to life. In the first two episodes alone, Reeves goes from being a slave serving in the Confederate army to living among the Native Americans and beyond. It’s quite the journey. And the show, as a production, is staggering in its complexity and scale.
TheWrap spoke to Feehan about how he became involved, whether or not it was ever really an “1883” spin-off, the comparisons between Reeves and the Lone Ranger and whether or not he has more stories left to tell with the character.
How did you initially become involved?

Bass Reeves has one hell of a story. Born into slavery in Arkansas, he was forced by his owner to fight on the Confederate side of the Civil War. He escaped — legend has it, he beat up his owner over a card game and ran off — and lived for years in the Indian Territory. He eventually became the first Black man to wear a U.S. Marshal badge west of the Missisippi, and finished his career with thousands of arrests. And, depending on which version of pop culture history you believe,...

This article contains no spoilers for Lawmen: Bass Reeves but does discuss details of the real Bass Reeve’s story.
While audiences have fallen in love with Yellowstone (and perhaps a little out of love since the delay in production due to the myriad of Hollywood strikes and behind-the-scenes drama of the show), its storytelling universe has grown exponentially. With all the proposed spinoffs and pre-existing prequels, fans are now looking at nearly half a dozen shows within this amazing world that reminds Americans about their bearish beginnings and how the West was really formed. Yet none of the cowboy inspired chaos and horse-driven drama is grounded in reality as much as the newly-released Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which is produced by Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan and created by Chad Feehan.

Paramount+’s Lawmen: Bass Reeves episode one introduces David Oyelowo as the legendary lawman whose life was dedicated to protecting the peace in the Old West. Reeves was credited with arresting over 3,000 criminals while serving as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, and it’s not a stretch to believe he might have been one of the inspirations for The Lone Ranger.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves was created and written by Chad Feehan, based on the books Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book One and Hell on the Border: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book Two by Sidney Thompson. Episode one focuses on the last days of Bass Reeves’ enslavement and the time he spent with the Seminoles, with David Oyelowo delivering a powerful performance as the runaway slave turned gunslinging lawman.

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” marks the latest entry in executive producer Taylor Sheridan’s increasingly expansive fiefdom at Paramount+, populated by various “Yellowstone” spin-offs and unaffiliated entries such as “Mayor of Kingstown” and “Tulsa King.” Like those shows, “Lawmen” gives Sheridan the opportunity to anchor a charismatic movie star to a compelling premise, all sprinkled with a high class polish paid for by the Paramount piggy bank.
Created by Chad Feehan, “Bass Reeves” stars David Oyelowo in the title role, a real life figure who went from slavery to serving as one of the country’s first Black deputy U.S. Marshals. He’s a fascinating figure who is more than worthy of a showcase all his own.
While this “Bass Reeves” was initially intended to bear the “1883” label, marking it as part of Sheridan’s extended “Yellowstone”-verse, it’s instead being launched under the newly-invented aegis “Lawmen.” Presumably this...

In the last two years, Paramount+ has released 13 drama series, six of which have stemmed from “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan. Some are directly tied to the hit cable (and now broadcast) series, like the timestamped prequels “1883” and “1923,” while others merely bear the prolific writer and producer’s name. All have been considered successful by the nascent streamer (if less so by the culture at large), and thus the Taylor Sheridan Television Universe continues expanding.
Its latest, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” is actually built from both sides of the Dutton family’s ever-expanding fence — or it was, at least. While always about the first Black U.S. Marshall west of the Mississippi River, the seasonal anthology series was originally tied to “1883” before redevelopments set its story apart and Sheridan, who was once attached to direct, ended up solely an executive producer. Through four of the 10 episodes, I can’t...

For those who know, the true story of Bass Reeves has long been one of those elusive properties that felt made for film or television treatment. Born in slavery. Conscripted into the Confederate Army. Escaped and sheltered among Indigenous people. Deputized as a U.S. marshal and so famous he’s the alleged inspiration for the Lone Ranger. Not to mention one of the all-time great historical mustaches.
Every detail in Reeves’ biography is wild, but for reasons — or “reasons,” since we all know the reason — a filmed recounting of that biography has been restricted to fleeting episodic TV mentions in places like Drunk History and Timeless. So there’s no question that executive producer Taylor Sheridan deserves some credit for using his bottomless reservoir of Paramount+ clout to get a Bass Reeves limited series out of development hell and onto the air. The creator of Lawmen: Bass Reeves is setting the record straight about whether the show is a spinoff of 1883.
When the show was initially ordered, it was billed by Paramount+ as a spinoff of the first Yellowstone prequel.
Chad Feehan, the creator and showrunner of the highly-anticipated new drama, is opening up about what changed to TV Line.
Making the show a spinoff of the critically-lauded 1883 "was an idea we briefly talked about," Feehan explained to the outlet.
"But for me, once I learned some of the things I didn't know about Bass' life, and decided where we wanted to start the story and where we wanted to end the story, it preceded 1883," he added.
In a separate interview with TV Insider, Feehan said the idea to make it a spinoff was talked about before he was hired.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves is not a spinoff of 1883, but it had the chance to be. The Paramount+ anthology series, premiering Sunday, November 5, stars David Oyelowo as the legendary Bass Reeves, the first Black deputy marshal in the United States who’s said to have inspired The Lone Ranger. The eight-episode season is set from “roughly 1862 to 1877,” creator, executive producer, and showrunner Chad Feehan tells TV Insider. Feehan was “given the opportunity” to connect Bass Reeves to Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone universe but chose not to. Here, Feehan explains why. Viewers will see lots of similarities between Bass Reeves and Sheridan’s hit western shows. In addition to having Sheridan as an executive producer, the Bass Reeves title sequence looks a lot like 1883 and 1923‘s and they have Yellowstone actor Mo Brings Plenty in the cast and as a cultural consultant (he ...

This collaboration aims to reframe the narrative around Reeves, a real-life individual whose contributions have largely been “whitewashed” in history books.

And the Taylor Sheridan Extended Universe keeps expanding as Lawmen: Bass Reeves now has an official trailer.
Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, Lawman: Bass Reeves will certainly be a hotly anticipated addition to the corral, especially considering it is based on a real-life figure, to be played by the great Davud Oyelowo. Oyelowo is no stranger to playing historical figures, portraying the likes of Muddy Waters (Who Do You Love?), Martin Luther King Jr. (Selma) and Seretse Khama (A United Kingdom).
In the trailer, we see Oyelowo as Bass Reeves, who considers himself a mixture of both lawman and outlaw. From there, we get a pretty good idea of what the man is all about, teasing the ethics and action that will make up Bass Reeves.

As previously shared, the new series will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ with two episodes on Sunday, November 5, in the U.S. and all Paramount+ international markets.
The anthology series stars executive producer and Emmy Award nominee David Oyelowo, Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Emmy Award winner Barry Pepper, Honorary Oscar recipient Donald Sutherland, and Emmy Award nominee Dennis Quaid.
The cast alone is worth talking about, but the official trailer begins giving some of these historical characters more dimension.

Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Lawmen: Bass Reeves, which is set to premiere with two episodes on Sunday, Nov. 5.
The anthology stars David Oyelowo, who is also exec producing, as well as Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, Donald Sutherland and Dennis Quaid.
Lawmen follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.
Future iterations of the anthology series will follow other iconic lawmen and outlaws who have impacted history.

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves” is the beginning of a new television franchise and a dramatization of one of the most fabled, as the title would suggest, lawmen of all time and one of the first Black U.S. Marshals. He was also supposedly the basis for The Lone Ranger, something that is very clear from the brand-new trailer for the series, which you can watch above.
David Oyelowo plays Reeves, who in the trailer tells a child who asks if he’s a lawman or an outlaw that he’s “a bit of both.” Dennis Quaid is a Deputy U.S. Marshal who also seems to be a mentor. And Forrest Goodluck plays Billy Crow, Reeves’ sidekick and a very Tonto-seeming character. (Even the new poster that was released seems to evoke the spirit of The Lone Ranger’s horse Silver.) Barry Pepper, Demi Singleton, Garrett Hedlund, Donald Sutherland, Dale Dickey and Shea Whigham also star.
