Ah the early 2000s. The Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube were the hottest videogame consoles around. Limp Bizkit, Smash Mouth, Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, and Usher were ruling the airwaves and little did we know we would be blessed with tons of horror video game movie adaptations as well. Granted, some weren’t that great, looking at you House of the Dead, Doom and Alone in the Dark. But there also were some fun films from this genre…Silent Hill and Resident Evil. At the time, both weren’t exactly loved by critics, but they did have their fans and have each spawned sequels. Today, we’re looking at the first Resident Evil (watch it Here) on this episode of Horror Revisited.

This week, the music world mourned the death of Steve Harwell, a founding member and frontman of Smash Mouth whose distinctive delivery helped turn “Walkin’ on the Sun” and “All Star” into multi-generational pop hits. Until his retirement in 2021, he and bassist Paul Delisle were the two consistent members of the band’s lineup since their 1994 inception. And while guitarist Greg Camp served as the songwriter behind the group’s best-known tunes, Harwell was its iconic voice — in more ways than one.

Today came the sad news that Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell died at 56. Smash Mouth is undoubtedly best known today for the fact their 1999 hit song "All Star" played at the very beginning of the first "Shrek" movie. Like with everything else related to "Shrek," the song has become a bit of a meme.
It's easy to forget, however, that before "Shrek" debuted at Cannes and went on to win the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, "All Star" was a smash hit way before Shrek. It was considered one of the best songs of 1999 and even got nominated for the Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal Grammy. While "Shrek" immortalized it, it was actually another film from 2001 that gave us the best use of "All Star," and one of the best endings to a movie of the last 20 years.

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has died at the age of 56.
According to Smash Mouth’s manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell “passed peacefully and comfortably” at his home in Boise, Idaho on Monday, September 4th.
Harwell recently began hospice care due to liver failure. Additionally, he suffered from cardiomyopathy and Wernicke’s encephalopathy.
Born January 9th, 1967, in Santa Clara, California, Steven Scott Harwell actually began his career as a rapper. His group Freedom of Speech (F.O.S.) recorded one song, “Big Black Boots,” that earned them some local radio play and scored Harwell a manager before he set his sights on alternative rock.
Harwell formed Smash Mouth in 1994, teaming with drummer Kevin Coleman, guitarist Greg Camp, and bassist Paul De Lisle. Their debut album, Fush Mu Yang, arrived three years later, and featured the single “Walkin’ on the Sun,” which hit No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.

The first season of Cruel Summer was an unexpected hit for Freeform back in 2021 when it became the No. 1 new cable drama among women. The series had a great hook: the story was divided across three years, each visually distinct, following the same characters as their circumstances changed in relation to a central mystery.
In season one, that was the kidnapping of a popular girl. In season two of showrunner Elle Triedman‘s anthology series, the stakes have escalated to murder.
Just like before, the action involves two high school girls: risk-averse, straight A student Megan Landry (Sadie Stanley) and Isabella Larue (Lexi Underwood), the wealthy daughter of diplomats. The latter girl is essentially an exchange student who comes to stay with Megan and her family – mom Debbie (KaDee Strickland) and younger sister Lily (Jenna Lamb) – for a year in the small Pacific North West tourist town of Chatam.

Seth Meyers actually felt some sympathy for “Fox and Friends” host Brian Kilmeade on Wednesday night, after watching a segment in which Kilmeade ended up running frantically around a Florida diner, looking for anyone to say they weren’t supporting twice-impeached former president Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
The segment came from Tuesday morning’s show, when Kilmeade was sent to a restaurant called Metro Diner in Ponte Vedra Beach. In the clip, Kilmeade first asks the crowd “who’s pumped up” for the 2024 election. When they all enthusiastically agree, Kilmeade begins rapid fire asking everyone there “Who’s your man” or “who’s your woman.”
By Meyers’ guess, Kilmeade and Fox News were hoping to get a lot of Ron DeSantis as an answer, because “they’re hyping Ron DeSantis” in an effort to “put the genie back in the bottle.”

Twenty years after its cancellation, "Firefly" still casts a large shadow. Its ensemble cast, its space Western setting, and the way it wasn't afraid to tackle darker themes earned the show a loyal fan base that continues to support "Firefly"-themed projects to this day. But one thing's for certain: Fox never knew what to do with "Firefly."
For starters, there was the marketing. An initial promo for the show used wacky sound effects and Smash Mouth's "Walkin' on the Sun." It referred to Morena Baccarin's Inara Serra as a "cosmic hooker." And it contained perhaps the most groan-worthy pun, suggesting "Firefly" was "out there." Because...

Way back in 2016, when “Netflix movie” still sounded like a contradiction in terms, McG and producer Mary Viola’s Wonderland Sound and Vision began developing its first project for Netflix, “When We First Met.” As one of the first Netflix rom-coms, no one knew exactly what a Netflix rom-com was supposed to be; McG made it his mission to find out.
Netflix Original Independent Film VP Ian Bricke remembers that as soon as the deal closed, McG turned his high-energy patter toward trying to understand exactly what Netflix wanted from its original films — everything from demographics to the way the platform worked. “As a creative and as a businessman and a producer, he’s always looking around the corner — what’s the next thing?” said Bricke. “The fact that it was uncharted territory, the wild west, was part of the appeal for him.”

Still, Noem cleaved closer to Trump’s failed policies than any other governor. In public, she recited Trump’s talking points: Covid was a Democratic plot to take over the country, masks were optional, and we’re open for business. Superficially, the statements seemed less crazy when delivered in the calm...

Universal Music Group filed a motion to dismiss a class action lawsuit filed by Soundgarden, Tom Petty’s ex-wife Jane, Hole, Steve Earle and the estate of Tupac Shakur on behalf of artists who are seeking damages related to a 2008 fire that allegedly destroyed over 500,000 recordings.
The class action lawsuit was filed in late June and accuses Universal Music of negligence in not doing enough to prevent the fire, as well as concealing the extent of the destruction from artists while simultaneously pursuing litigation and insurance claims to recoup losses.

It's a trap!
Mark Hamill celebrated May the 4th (aka Star Wars Day) with some light-hearted pranks for some of the Force's most loyal devotees, that resulted in meeting Luke Skywalker himself.
"I've rounded up some superfans for something special," Hamill says in the video. "They think they're here to read some classic Star Wars lines for a video celebrating the 40th anniversary. But what they don't know, is that I'll be their surprise co-star."
Flashback: George Lucas Talks Origins of ‘Star Wars’ and Expanding ‘A New Hope’ Into a Trilogy
Watch the video below to see how the fans reacted to the stunt.
Priceless! This really is the perfect way to reach out to the beloved franchise's die-hards.
Elsewhere on May the Fourth, Jimmy Fallon did some musical re-editing on Wednesday's Tonight Show, cutting together footage from previous Star Wars films to make the original cast do a rendition of Smashmouth's "All Star."

Shrek was released my junior year of high school and was inexplicably popular with the teenage set. I, however, fucking hated it, and this fact caused actual arguments with my peers. Seriously. They found it offensive that I disliked it, even when I laid out my very astute critique. It only made me hate the movie more.
So I was super gratified when this turned up in my inbox. Sure it has taken the wider culture 16 years to catch up to me (good hell, I’m old), but finally, Screen Junkies has made an Honest Trailer for the film that lays out a lot of my reasons for hating the film when it was released, give or take a few. Watch the Honest Trailer to learn most of the reasons why Shrek is terrible, and then spend the rest of the day cursing me (and the Screen Junkies crew) for...

What's the only thing worse than a sequel? The only prospect worse than paying £10 at your local cinema to have your favourite movie ruined, forever. The answer has three words. Straight-to-video.
In the '90s, home release sequels became fairly common. You'd greet them with surprise at your local Blockbusters and then want to pull your eyeballs out when you took them home and watched them. They're probably called straight-to-dvd or straight-to-Blu-ray now, but they still exist.
With the announcement that Dolph Lundgren will be starring in Kindergarten Cop 2 (because of course), here are 21 absolute stinking sequels - the vast majority of which weren't even considered good enough for the cinema. How many of them have you watched?
1. American Pie Presents: Band Camp
2. American Pie Presents: Beta House
Maybe it's the Eugene Levy factor - just why did he keep starring in all the sequels?! - but we have weird...

The Disney Dtv sequels have become a bit if an embarrassment to the Disney legacy. There have been a lot of them and for every Toy Story 2 there are a half dozen cash-ins like Aladdin The Return Of Jafar, Beauty And The Beast’S Enchanted Christmas, and Lilo And Stitch – Stitch Has A Glitch. Most seemed rushed with inferior animation, weak tunes, and lame scripts. They may have worked their way into the wallets of the Disney fans, but not their hearts.
Let’s face it – topping Phil Harris and his classic jungle jive in the original 1967 Jungle Book wasn’t going to happen but 2003’s Jungle Book 2 was better than most sequels, had an impressive voice cast, and was wise enough to include the Jb signature tune “The Bear Necessities” not once but three times! The film’s animation was more detailed and vivid than most of Disney...

I think Daft Punk might have replaced Smash Mouth as the Richest Band on the Planet. Or they’re about to. Reports HypeBeast: Coca-Cola partners up with another major act in 2011 as they introduce the Daft Punk x Coca-Cola “Club Coke”. Produced in two distinctive colorways, mimicking the helmets worn by the French duo, the gold and silver bottles will see a limited production run beginning in March 2011. In addition to the general release at clubs, the bottles will be packaged in a collector’s box as a set, made available in exclusively through colette in Paris. Club Coke. Subtle. Here’s the commercial, featuring Justice. Jk! Featuring Hot Chip. Double Jk! Featuring Daft Punk. They are just one Shrek soundtrack away from buying and selling us all. Via Brooklyn Vegan...

The movie awards season always sets out to reward the excellence in the film world every year (culminating with the Oscars, whose nominations will be released on Tuesday morning, January 25), but considering most of the movies that come out over the course of a year are middling-to-terrible, there should also be awards that recognize failure as well. That's where the Razzies come in. For 31 years, the Razzies (or rather, the "Golden Raspberries") have been recognizing the worst in cinema every year. Past winners of Worst Picture include notorious busts like "Howard the Duck," "Hudson Hawk," "The Postman" and "Showgirls," and this year's nominees include problematic releases like "The Bounty Hunter," "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," "Sex and the City 2," "The Last Airbender" and "Vampires Suck." There are also awards for Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Screenplay and Worst Director (in addition to the new-this-year Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3-D, which...

It's not something I would have considered two months ago, when this show was first unleashed on the American public, but all that time we've spent with certain contestant suddenly makes the decision of who goes on, well, difficult. Each of the remaining 20 acts has performed three times now, and we've gotten to see their journey (or at least parts) and get to know them as people -- people devoted to their dreams, people for whom this show is the biggest deal possible. And people I sort of like. Really! I had the opportunity to speak to all 20 semifinalists over the past four weeks, learning about their struggles and triumphs, their goals for the future, and the sort of unrelenting optimism that has guided them this far. The producers got it wrong when they decided David Hasselhoff was the most important part of their show -- he's a buffoon (you...
