The world we currently orbit is a strange and confined one. This world has introduced us to a new type of solitude as unfamiliar feelings surface that are unique to a chaotic world amidst a global pandemic. During this time, reflection has happened upon us all to varying degrees. As we move into winter with no prospect of clarity, we seek out ways to stay positive and escape the distress of uncertainty. A constant source of solace during this time has been the (re)discovery of cinema. Through cinema the exploration of other worlds is possible: small pockets of alternate realities to escape the reality of a winter stuck inside the house, missing loved ones and the joys of full bodied freedom. It came as perfect timing then, that as "melancholy fall" became my particular cinematic mood, Pure Person Press released a new charity compilation Va focused on musician and...

The arrival of a show like “Little America” is no accident. Each chapter of Apple TV Plus’ new anthology series centers on the journeys of immigrants and first-generation Americans who end up in the United States either by choice, necessity or some combination thereof. It also comes at a time when Hollywood is (at the very least) making overtures toward becoming more inclusive in its storytelling and on-screen representation, and as the country’s increasingly dire political situation keeps the very nature of immigration in jeopardy.
“Little America,” which Apple renewed for a second season weeks before the first was set to premiere, strives to show the myriad ways and reasons why people come to the United States while also highlighting their individual personalities and humanity. Even though every episode is written and directed by someone different, following characters with no specific awareness of one another, all of the installments...

There are as many sad parts of Apple TV+’s new immigration anthology series Little America as there are sweet ones. The eight stories contained in the first season feature children being separated from parents, dreams going astray, and scene after scene conveying the profound loneliness of being a stranger in a strange land. There is plenty to make you smile, as well, but be advised to keep tissues handy.

"Chinglish," David Henry Hwang's play about an American businessman coping with translation and romantic problems in China, will close on Jan. 29, the producers announced on Monday. The play, which previously ran at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, will have given 128 performances at the Longacre Theatre. Back Stage critic Erik Haagensen called the show a "smart and uproarious comedy" and singled out Angela Lin who plays two supporting roles, as giving one of his ten memorable New York theater performances of 2011. Watch Video With The Cast Of "Chinglish"Jennifer Lim Challenges Ethnic Stereotypes In "Chinglish""Magic/Bird," Eric Simonson's new play about basketball legends Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird, will begin preview performances at the Longacre on March 21 in advance of an April 11 opening, producers announced on Tuesday. David Henry Hwang: Chinglish Longacre Theatre, NYC
Chinglish is the word coined for those humorously bad Chinese-to-English mistranslations found on signs, in electronics manuals, etc. That sort of thing is hardly exclusive to China (there are plenty of examples from around the world here), but thanks to the first-world economic implosion, China is where the stakes are highest now. The new play by Chinese-American playwright David Henry Hwang (his first on Broadway in 13 years) is built around both this crucial transition and mistranslation. Bring your opera glasses, because being able to read supertitles has never been more important.
Our hero lead schlub, Daniel Cavanaugh (Gary Wilmes), opens the play alone, explaining to an unseen conference audience the secret of his business success in China. As his business is signs, this talk includes memorably mistranslated examples, most prominently "Fuck the certain price of goods," which makes perfect sense once it's...
