The team behind “Girls5eva” has gotten used to being texted song demos out of the blue. Series creator Meredith Scardino regularly sends music supervisor (and fellow executive producer) Jeff Rich- mond and his team voice memos singing her lyrics to the show’s latest absurd songs, such as “Home Alone Doorknob” or “Sweet’N Low Daddy.”
By season’s end, Sara Bareilles also gets in on the fun. It is a tradition that the Grammy winner, who stars as Dawn, writes a song to emotionally punctuate each finale. In Season 1, as Dawn began to harness her own songwriting dreams, Bareilles penned an ode to imperfection with “Four Stars,” and for Season 2, she was behind the empowering anthem “Bend Not Break.”
Deploying Bareilles’ soulful style is always strategic for the series, which moved to Netflix for Season 3 after two seasons on Peacock.

In Netflix series Girls5Eva the band gets back together — literally. The titular all-female pop group hit the skids back in the early aughts, but when a hip hop star samples their old hit song 20 years later, the women grab their second chance, leading to some questionable outfit choices and calamitous video shoots. As self-proclaimed band leader, Wickie Roy, Hamilton Tony-winner Renée Elise Goldsberry deadpans her way through deliberately terrible songs written by co-star Sara Bareilles, alongside Paula Pell and Busy Phillips. With the show in its third season, Goldsberry says it reminds us it’s never too late to chase our dreams.
Deadline: Tell me how you came to connect with Girls5Eva creator Meredith Scardino and executive producer Tina Fey. And what was your first impression of the script?

There is something so delicious about biting into a comedy from the Tina Fey/Robert Carlock universe. “30 Rock,” of course, was the gold standard — and a show I find myself still quoting to this day. Team the Fey camp with Meredith Scardino, who cut her teeth on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” and you get “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” another landmark show that helped Netflix define its smart comedy brand early in that streamer’s life.
Scardino was also part of the Fey/Carlock collab that gave us NBC’s “Mr. Mayor,” and I am still a bit angry that not enough people tuned into that sharp series. Ted Danson and Holly Hunter led a workplace comedy that delightfully skewered Los Angeles while setting up some amazing character dynamics.
But that’s not what this column is about. Yes, the short life of “Mr. Mayor” still stings. Instead,...

It shouldn’t surprise you that Finneas is a great interview. Like his sister, Billie Eilish, he’s incredibly engaging and charming, and he’s more than willing to sit down and dive into his creative process, whether it’s on Eilish’s excellent new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, his solo work, or scoring gigs for TV and film. We spent several hours with him for Eilish’s recent Rolling Stone cover story. Last week, we shared some of the outtakes from that story — but there’s even more.

In this edition of THR Frontrunners, Girls5Eva creator and showrunner Meredith Scardino and stars Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips and Paula Pell joined The Hollywood Reporter‘s Tyler Coates for a conversation about the third season of the Netflix comedy series at a live event hosted by the San Vincente Bungalows in Los Angeles.
“It was heavenly,” said Pell about the streamer picking up the series — the first two seasons of which aired on Peacock — for its third season. “It’s like art imitating life: Our characters have second chances.”
Scardino added that a lot of the comedy, which follows the exploits of a turn-of-the-millennium girl group who are thrust back into the spotlight decades later when a Gen-z rapper samples their pop hit, is sparked from the four stars’ incredible bond both on- and off-camera. “They have a joke that I have weekly meetings with their therapists,...

“Girls5eva” deserves to be heard. Yes, the laugh-out-loud comedy, from the minds of Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, creator Meredith Scardino and others, is funny. The music industry is wickedly skewered. The music, led by Jeff Richmond, is clever and catchy.
But really, the heart of the show comes from its stars — Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell — and the characters they play. These are women of a certain age who are rediscovering their voices and finally taking on their dreams, after years of settling for something less.
Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast recently spoke to Philipps and Pell about Season 3 of “Girls5eva,” what the show has meant to them and the special message that it resonates between the laughs. Listen below!

At the beginning of Act Two of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Mendez and other ensemble members sing “It’s A Hit!,” celebrating the successful opening of characters Charlie and Frank’s first Broadway musical. Indeed, one could say the same about this revival of “Merrily,” not just because of its smash box office receipts, but also because of the seven Tony Awards nominations that it received on April 30. This recognition from New York theatre’s highest honor is a true redemption for the show, whose original production was a notorious flop for composer Stephen Sondheim and director Hal Prince that ran only 16 regular performances and earned only a single bid for Sondheim’s original score. But how does this production’s Tony success compare to other recent revivals of the late composer’s works?

As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actress, make sure to check out our photo gallery that catalogs the likeliest contenders. Including newly promoted 2023 supporting champ Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), three past winners are presently leading the pack, practically ensuring one of the most exciting acting races of the year.
Edebiri’s expected challengers include this category’s reigning victor, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), and 2021-2022 winner Jean Smart (“Hacks”). Brunson already lost to Smart two years ago but was honored that night for writing her show’s pilot episode.
None of the four actresses Brunson beat last year are in the running this time. Both Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”) and Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) starred on series that concluded during the last eligibility period, while Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”) and Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) won’t continue in their roles soon enough to qualify.

Fumi Nikaido could be one of several “Shōgun” stars who go on to earn Emmy nominations for their career-best work in the FX series.

Meanwhile, a British sailor (Cosmo Jarvis) begins a brand new life after becoming shipwrecked in Japan and entering the service of Hiroyuki Sanada‘s Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
Jarvis and Sanada are both competing for lead actor nominations and so, too, is Anna Sawai. Nikaido, meanwhile, is one of several supporting players who are looking for an Emmy citation for their work on the show. What happens when you plan an extravagant worldwide tour… and nobody shows up?
That, unfortunately, seems to be the case for Girls5eva, the sharp and sassy music-industry comedy that moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season this month. The show — staring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of a forgotten Y2K-era girl group attempting a middle-age comeback — was never properly appreciated during its two Peacock seasons, and it felt like a lifeline when it got picked up by Netflix for Season 3, since the streaming giant routinely turns its acquired shows into monster hits.

My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.

Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is working. Well, it is and maybe it isn’t.
According to a new study of more than 2,500 U.S. households performed by Leichtman Research Group (Lrg), 10 percent of Netflix users are still borrowing the service. If that feels low, it is — according to recent history, at least. In 2022, Lrg found that 15 percent of Netflix users were borrowing someone else’s paid account; the rate was 14 percent in 2020 and 16 percent in 2018.
Ten percent starts to feel less small when you do the math. Netflix has 260 million global paid users, which (basically) means that 26 million users are still not being monetized. Assuming they should be paying at least $7.99/month apiece — the going rate to share with an outsider — that’s $200 million-plus in monthly revenue not being collected.
A Netflix rep did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on Lrg’s findings.
No wonder Disney+,...

Assuming they should be paying at least $7.99/month apiece — the going rate to share with an outsider — that’s $200 million-plus in monthly revenue not being collected.
A Netflix rep did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on Lrg’s findings.

Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?
The title “Girls5eva” refers to a fictitious girl group from the late-90s and early-aughts, as well as their breakout song (cause 4eva‘s too short!): Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Phillips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry). The group disbanded after fifth member Ashley (Ashley Park) drowned in an infinity pool, but 20 years later they’re making a comeback.

Netflix fans are reportedly scared that the streamer is planning to axe a favorite comedy series. Although Season 3 of the 90s girl drama just dropped last week, people are worried that it won’t be renewed for Season 4. Girls5Eva was dropped by Peacock before it moved to Netflix and now it seems like the streaming service might be getting ready to drop it too. Keep reading to see why fans think it may be the next popular series to get the axe and what the future of the show might be.

Band on the run! After two seasons on Peacock, the recently reunited (and mercifully fictional) ’90s girl group known as Girls5Eva is heading out on the road…and staking out a new home on Netflix. “It’s a dream come true,” says Grammy winner Sara Bareilles, who continues to simply shine as logical, slightly uptight crooner Dawn opposite Renée Elise Goldsberry‘s fame-hungry Wickie, Paula Pell‘s earthy lesbian Gloria, and Busy Philipps‘ flaky Summer. “When we [heard] we were moving to Netflix and the first seasons were coming as well, there was so much relief because we all love making this show so much.” When the comedy returns for a stellar six-episode run, the ladies are out on the least-glam tour ever in support of their new album, Returnity. “Janky, low-end…yeah, analog,” offers the chronically hilarious Pell of their array of stops. Along the way, they manage to...

Forever’s too short — and so is two seasons, which is why Emmy-nominated musical comedy Girls5eva is headed to Netflix for an all-new third season debuting March 14. Seasons 1 and 2 will also premiere on the service the same day. Check out the brand-new Season 3 trailer above and keep reading below for more information about what’s to come.
Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell star in Girls5eva as the surviving members of a one-hit wonder girl group from the ’90s who reunite in the present to try their hand at pop stardom one more time, all while juggling the responsibilities of adulthood.
Multi-hyphenate Meredith Scardino (creator/showrunner/executive producer/Emmy-nominated writer) and executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, David Miner, Eric Gurian, and Jeff Richmond are also returning for the series, which hails from Universal Television.

The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.

When she’s not earning laughs as the flighty but metamorphosing Summer Dutkowsky, the self-proclaimed “hot one” of Girls5eva, the real Busy Philipps — beloved actor, internet personality, and podcaster — has spent the past seven years building a reputation as the brutally honest one.
Around 2017, Philipps started chronicling her daily life on the then-nascent Instagram Stories, speaking directly into the camera with a confessional “Ok … You guys …,” followed by whatever might pop into her brain at any given moment. One story, for example, is an admission of keeping running shoes...

Starting today, three seasons of Girls5eva — the Tina Fey-produced comedy starring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell as members of a one-hit wonder pop group struggling to mount a comeback in middle age — are streaming on Netflix. The average subscriber will be forgiven for assuming the show, is, and always was, a Netflix original they just never noticed before, especially since the third season features a couple of meta jokes about being on the streaming giant. (The parents of Goldsberry’s Wickie, for instance, like to binge shows on Streamberry,...

There’s a very specific brand of broad silliness that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have championed across comedies like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor. Their shows exist in a fluid reality where it feels like anything is possible.
Meredith Scardino worked on the latter of these two series and her original creation, Girls5Eva, is very much cut from the same absurdist cloth. The music industry lampoon received plenty of attention when it first premiered on Peacock, only to fade away like a forgotten pop music group. It’s exciting that Netflix has rescued the effort, which is just as hilarious as ever, yet Girls5Eva still feels destined to resonate with a niche crowd instead of becoming the streaming service’s next big hit. This comedy can hit the right notes, but it’s not going to pack a stadium full of fans.

Girls5eva, which is headed into its third season this week, tells the story of four women who were members of a briefly popular girl band and are now back together, two decades later, in a second attempt at success. The show pokes fun at the absurdity of the real pop culture landscapes in both the ’90s and today, but the cast and crew want to be clear: The laughs are made with love.
“The show, for us, has always been this beautiful kind of healing,” star Renee Elise Goldsberry tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It gives refuge.”
The Tiny Fey-produced comedy is written and created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and stars Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps.
Part of that healing, Goldsberry and her castmates say, comes from their regard for Scardino’s source material.

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

Meryl Streep is opening up about some of the fears she had going into season three of Only Murders in the Building, particularly when it came to her big musical number.

The series, which premiered in 2021, stars Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, and Renée Elise Goldsberry as former teen pop stars who now want to get the band back together. Two years after ending its two-year run on Peacock — and subsequently being rescued by Netflix — Meredith Scardino’s musical comedy “Girls5Eva” is ready for its new streaming home. Seasons 1 and 2 are set to move from Peacock to Netflix in March, and they’ll be accompanied by the all-new Season 3, which dropped its first trailer on Thursday.

A musical comedy television series created by Meredith Scardino, “Girls5eva,” started life as a Peacock series before getting canceled after a second season. Centering on a one-hit-wonder band from the ’90s who gain a second shot at fame when a young rapper samples their song, the series, fortunately, had enough ride-or-die fans that Netflix deemed it worthy of a season pick-up and bought it from Peacock for season three, which is soon approaching.

The show from creator Meredith Scardino and 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock will settle into its new home after originally debuting on Peacock where it streamed for two seasons. Girls5eva centers around the members of the titular late ’90s girl group – Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Summer (Busy Philipps), and Gloria (Paula Pell) – as they continue to work on their comeback tour after having reunited and recorded their new album Returnity. (Credit: Netflix) The only catch is that they don’t have a plan, tour manager, or venues secured for such an endeavor, forcing the ladies to pile into a van and hit the road to promote their album and get back on top.

The ’90s are still back, and Dawn, Wickie, Summer and Gloria are ready for round three.
Netflix debuted the Girls5eva season three trailer on Thursday, featuring the ladies’ Returnity comeback and a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
In the video, show regulars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell are back with their fan-favorite girl band comedy. With little support, the band bets against the odds to head on tour for their album Returnity and book a gig on the late night show.
The first two seasons of Girls5eva premiered on Peacock, but the streamer announced in 2022 that it would not continue the series. Netflix will now release the show’s third season on March 14, the same day fans will also be able to access seasons one and two on the mega-streamer.
