Whatever it takes to keep a techno hellraiser on its feet, The Hummingbird Project doesn’t have it. Just don’t blame the film’s two lead actors. Jesse Eisenberg surges with all the manic energy he showed in The Social Network, playing Vincent Zaleski, the hustler behind an idea to run fiber-optic cable from Kansas to a Wall Street databank in New Jersey to gain a millisecond of info advantage — the speed of a hummingbird’s wing beat — that could bring in billions.

Christopher Meloni is back on the beat, with Happy! as an ex-cop, but don't expect Law & Order: Svu's Detective Elliot Stabler when your turn on the Syfy series. In Happy!, which is based on Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson's graphic novel, Meloni plays Nick Sax, an intoxicated, corrupt ex-cop who now works as a hit man...and sees an imaginary blue horse named Happy. A blue horse with wings. And a horn. "It was pitched this way: 'Read the script,'" Meloni told E! News about how producers showed him the project. His response to the script? "Ok, I read it. I have no idea what I just read. Can you enlighten me?" But Brian Taylor, who co-wrote the pilot and...

Mere seconds into the first episode, “Happy!” almost earns the exclamation point in its title. As Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni), a disgraced ex-cop with booze running through his veins, stares into a dirty barroom mirror, he pulls two pistols from his pockets and blows the back of his head off.
That’s a good thing — using the weird logic of the scene — considering how much blood was being kept at bay by the top of Sax’s skull. A flood of red sprays from his open cranium like water bursting from busted fire hydrant, and Sax’s joyfully exuberant reaction is mirrored by the new environment around him. As his innards paint the ceiling, a bunch of half-naked dancers twirl around the lobotomized cop to an electro-tinged version of “Jingle Bells.”
It is Christmas time, after all.

Patton Oswalt defines the protagonist in Syfy’s new comedic thriller “Happy!” by referencing a classic buddy picture. “Remember in ‘Midnight Run,’ when Charles Grodin is telling DeNiro, ‘the reason you have an ulcer is that you have two modes of expression: Silence and rage’? That’s Nick Sax,” Oswalt told co-star Christopher Meloni, who plays the lead character. “It’s either glowering silence and then just explosive and it’s hilarious.”
It’s not a bad way to sum up the relationship between Meloni’s and Oswalt’s chatacters in “Happy!”, which premieres this Wednesday. But here’s the big difference: Rather than playing somewhat sane humans, Meloni stars as incredibly unstable private investigator Nick Sax, and Oswalt is the voice of Happy, a CGI flying unicorn who is either a figment of Nick’s imagination or the manifestation of a little girl’s imaginary friend.
Either way, only Nick can see Happy,...

The premise of Brian Taylor’s Mom & Dad sounds like a great spin-off to Blumhouse’s The Purge: There’s a 24 hour period where parents turn violently against their kids. And we’re brought into the fold of the lives of Brent (Nicolas Cage), a great dad on the brink of a cataclysmic mid-life crisis, and Kendall (Selma Blair), the mom who has sacrificed everything and gets no respect. “Nobody wanted to make this movie,” Nicolas Cage told us at Deadline’s Tiff studio. The Overlook Film Festival is something special. Easily the best genre event I’ve attended, Overlook was created for horror fans by a team whose passion for the genre runs deep. Not only have they scoured the globe for the latest horror movies that fans will get excited for, but they’ve also worked with some of the most creative people in performance art and immersive entertainment to offer attendees one-of-a-kind experiences.
Most film festivals focus heavily on the feature programming side of things for obvious reasons, but The Overlook Film Festival has enough alternative programming that you could spend your entire time focused on it. In fact, I’d say that calling it “alternative programming” does a disservice to what they’ve put together, as their special programming was stronger than the films they screened.
If you want the traditional film festival experience, that is entirely possible. If you...

The tagline “Nightmares come from somewhere” might not sound all that scary by itself, but paired with the extremely creepy teaser for the Syfy anthology series “Channel Zero,” it’s enough to give you a serious fright. The inaugural season of the show, “Channel Zero: Candle Cove,” is a six-part series based on Kris Straub’s short story from Creepypasta, and stars Paul Schneider and Fiona Shaw (“Harry Potter”).
The teaser reveals what can only be described as the scariest manifestation ever of a monstrous tooth ferry, which appears to “eat” several teeth off the hand of a young boy. Bloody Disgusting describes the show as centering “on one man’s obsessive recollection of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s – and his ever-growing, dreadful suspicions about the role it might have played in a series of nightmarish and deadly events from his childhood.”

James Cameron has already begun production on his new Avatar movies — four entirely new films, as he personally announced at CinemaCon last week — and the Oscar winner exclusively tells Famous Monsters of Filmland executive editor David Weiner of his highly anticipated endeavor, “It’s going to be probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done.”
While detailing the production and lessons learned while making Aliens on the 1986 Sci-Fi classic’s upcoming 30th anniversary for a cover story in the June issue of Famous Monsters, Cameron revealed new details on his ambitious Avatar sequels production, including how he plans to shoot all films concurrently, not back-to-back; that he plans to use more real-world photographic references for the films; and that he has no intention to go up against the new Star Wars films:
On Shooting All New ‘Avatar’ Films Concurrently:

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

Some of the most memorable posters of recent years have emanated from the imaginations of fans, and this Drew Struzan-y effort for upcoming sci-fi adventure Robot Overlords is another such. Crafted by Scotsman Brian Taylor - Aka Candykiller - it captures the "'80s Amblin" spirit director Jon Wright is promising for his new sci-fi adventure and showcases his three stars, Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley and Aussie newcomer Callan McAuliffe. Click below for a closer look. Unlike those Amblin classics - The Goonies, especially - its gang of intrepid kids don't hail from Middle America. Ben Whishaw will have to start growing out his facial hair starting now for his role as the impeccably mustachioed Freddie Mercury.
The upcoming biopic is finally on the move after a couple of years in limbo, with Sacha Baron Cohen attached. The remaining Queen band members apparently were concerned about the casting of Cohen, who's known for his prankster roles.

Exclusive: Slavery continues to be in the cultural zeitgeist. FX has joined the trend with The Code, a limited series exploring American slavery from Kelsey Grammer‘s Grammnet Nh Prods. It is based on the book Song Yet Sung by The Color Of Water author James McBride, which draws from the life of famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman. Born a slave, she escaped and, with the help of the hard-bitten white watermen of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, fostered an intricate escape network of secret routes and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad that she used to smuggle more than 300 slaves to the North. The Code centers on Liz, a black woman making a desperate dash to freedom, on the run from a torn white waterman and able slave catcher, who takes on one last job — only to find himself in a war against a notorious female slave stealer. At one point, Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play the late Queen singer Freddie Mercury in a biopic, before abruptly abandoning the project soon after. Since then, Daniel Radcliffe was rumored to replace him, but that turned out to be just a rumor. Now, Queen drummer Brian Taylor has revealed to Mojo Magazine why Cohen left the project, despite fighting so hard to make it happen. "We felt Sacha probably wasn't right in the end," Taylor explained. "We didn't want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved." Cohen is known for his role in "Borat" and "The Dictator," but his portrayal of Mercury was never intended to be humorous. Queen members, however, were worried about his over-the-top reputation.

Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play late Queen singer Freddie Mercury in a biopic before abruptly leaving the production in July, citing creative differences. Now, the band is singing a different tune about what went wrong.
During an interview with Mojo Magazine, Queen drummer Brian Taylor summed up the band's interpretation of what led to Cohen's departure.
"We felt Sacha probably wasn't right in the end," Taylor explained. "We didn't want it to be a joke. We want people to be moved."
That's a bit different from the rumors swirling around in July, when Deadline reported that "the band wanted to make more of a PG movie about Queen while Cohen was counting on a gritty R-rated tell-all centered around the gifted gay singer." Though it's unclear what about Cohen's interpretation of Mercury would have been "a joke," Queen apparently wasn't amused by Cohen's reputation for over-the-top comedy showcased in "Borat" and "Bruno.

Tyler said, “When Marvel & Shane Black approached me about scoring ‘Iron Man 3,’ I was thrilled as a long-time fan of the series and super hero films in general. We all wanted this score to have a deeply thematic component with a strong melody. We felt that the story would lend itself best to go classic and use the orchestra as the main voice of the music,...

Having grown up as a teen on the troubled streets of South Central Los Angeles, writer and director David Ayer is fast becoming the best chronicler of the crime, social injustice and random violence that forever plagues the city of angels. Since writing the screenplays for Training Day and Dark Blue, Ayer has turned to directing with the underrated Harsh Times, Street Kings and now End of Watch.
End of Watch follows two L.A. patrol cops Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) as they cruise around the streets and apprehend various criminal low lives. Taylor and Zavala stumble on to something much bigger though and find themselves marked for death by a Mexican drug cartel. Along the way we learn of their hopes, dreams and the loves in their life and how close the two of them are.

★★★☆☆ A cursory glance at David Ayer's filmography will reveal his propensity for cop dramas, with previous work including such titles as 2001's Training Day (for which he wrote the screenplay) and 2008's Street Kings. The American director was back on the beat again last year for his latest flick, End of Watch (2012), a gritty action-thriller set in Los Angeles which owes much to two exceptional central performances. Our protagonists this time around are Officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), partners and best buds who are duty-bound protect and serve the citizens of the 'City of Angels'.

For those of you who have been hoping to never see another Ghost Rider movie starring Nicolas Cage, today is your lucky day because he's done with it! I enjoyed Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance more than most people. Regardless of how stupid it was, I liked the over-the-top ridiculousness, and I was entertained. Here's what Cage had to say,
I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved.... Personally, I'm done, I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done.
I wouldn't be too disappointed if I never saw Cage star in another Ghost Rider movie. Now, I would actually like to see another vision of the comic book character on the big screen, he's such a badass, we just need a writer...

Nicolas Cage has said he is not interested in making any more Ghost Rider movies.
Mark Steven Johnson's first film in 2007 made $228million globally on a $110million budget and accrued a feeble 26 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Attempting to give it a more gritty style and hold on to the screen rights, Sony brought in directing duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor for the semi-reboot Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which had a lower budget of $57million but made even less at the box office ($132million) than the first outing and was even less popular with critics (17 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes).
Not surprisingly, Cage says he's finished with the franchise - though he insists Spirit of Vengeance was a success in its own way.

Nicolas Cage has revealed that he will not star in a third Ghost Rider film.
The Croods actor said that he has no plans to reprise his role following 2011's poorly-received Spirit of Vengeance sequel.
"I think the ship has sailed on that one," he told MTV News.
Cage acknowledged the negative press surrounding the most recent outing but said that he was proud of the film.
"Contrary to whatever the perception is, that was an enormously successful movie," he said. "We made it for, like, $47 or $48 million dollars, and it approached $200 million. I view that as a success.
"I think people need to know we did that on a shoestring budget. When you look at it that way you see the enormous talent of Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor, that they were able to accomplish that."

While promoting his animated movie "The Croods," Nicolas Cage spoke about the "Ghost Rider" franchise, confirming that he will not be returning for any more installments. "I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved," he told MTV. "I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done." Cage went on to praise director Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor for their work on "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," which has a 17% rating on RottenTomatoes. "That was an enormously successful movie," he said. "We made it for $47 or $48 million dollars and it approached $200 million [in gross revenue]. I view that as a success." Despite having zero interest in "Ghost Rider 3," Cage said that he would like to see the franchise continue. "It would be interesting if they did it with a female Ghost Rider," he stated.

[From MTV Splash Page] "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" is very much a movie for me. As a fan of co-directors Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor well before their Marvel adaptation, and as a fan of Nicolas Cage's signature brand of over-the-top performances, "Spirit of Vengeance" was a movie that worked for me on every level — or, at least, on the important ones.
That said, I am the first to admit that it's not a movie for everyone. Its 17% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes says it, too. With that statistic in mind, perhaps it's not surprising to hear that Cage is done making "Ghost Rider" movies.

Holy hell, the last time we talked about The Vatican Tapes was 2009, and back then it had James Marsh (Man on a Wire) set to direct the latest flick detailing what happens when an exorcism goes wrong. Time has passed, and things have changed.
Variety is reporting that Lakeshore Entertainment has set Mark Neveldine to direct the thriller The Vatican Tapes, marking the filmmaker's first solo gig apart from his usual directing partner, Brian Taylor.
The story centers on a series of events that unfold after a tape gets leaked from the Vatican displaying an exorcism that goes wrong. Chris Borrelli wrote the screenplay based on a story by Borrelli and Chris Morgan.
Look for more soon, and to add a little disturbing to your day -- watch the video below, which is an account of the basis for The Exorcism of Emily Rose, the real life exorcism of Anneliese Michel.

The story about two friends, police officers and partners in the mean streets of La, End of the Watch is brilliantly shot - thanks to the documentary style or .found footage. that has become popular in recent years. The film has a gritty realism that hooks you from the opening moments. The ending breaks some of the emotional investment of the audience, but the film is still one of the best police dramas in years. The two police officers, young and on the brink of the rest of their lives, are Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Mike is married and he and his wife are expecting a child while Brian is single. Throughout the...

This week: Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as two Lapd partners that unwittingly make themselves targets of a dangerous drug cartel in the gritty, violent police drama "End of Watch."
Also new this week is the controversial Southern-fried drama "The Paperboy" starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey, as well as the raunchy-sweet chick flick "For a Good Time, Call …" featuring a breakout performance by funny lady Ari Graynor.

However, nothing can prepare them for the violent backlash that transpires after their routine actions threaten to expose a notorious drug cartel that tries to take them out in retaliation. End of Watch arrives on Blu-ray this Tuesday, thanks to Universal Home Entertainment. David Ayer wrote and directed one of the most realistic police dramas that I have seen. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, and Natalie Martinez. Watching it again on Blu-ray has reminded me of how powerful the performances are. Those, coupled with the fantastic script and tight action sequences, make End of Watch a great addition to your Blu-ray collection.
The film follows two young officers Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena) during their daily patrols of South Central, one of the most crime populated sections of Los Angeles. Taylor and Zavala are both gung-ho young officers who go above and beyond the call of duty and use their knowledge of the streets to do some low level detective work. This pays off for their professional career, but gains...

Jake Gyllenhaal (Love and Other Drugs) and Michael Pena (Everything Must Go) try to serve and protect in End of Watch.
The crime movie delves into the gritty, dangerous world explored in another movie written by writer/director David Ayers, Training Day.
In End of Watch, Gyllenhaal and Pena play young, enthusiastic cops Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala, respectively, who form a brotherhood to ensure they both go home at the end of their watch. But that gets more difficult after they perform a routine traffic stop and confiscate some money and firearms. Turns out, the items belonged to a notorious drug cartel, and they put a price on the cops’ heads.

This is one "movement" of our exquisite corpse-style critical project, Tony Scott: A Moving Target, which coincidentally begins with a look at Crimson Tide, the same movie that begins the other movement. As outlined in the introduction to the entire project, this project began in my mind, as something fairly simple: a snaking continuum of scene analysis. This is only in part what resulted.
The varied responses I got back from my group—"mine" in the sense that it is the one I participated in, since Gina's contribution closes Movement B—seem to say as much about the participating critics as they do about Tony Scott's films and the overlap between the two: the perception of Scott's films and career. Participating in this writing game is a little like being crossed between Robert Bresson’s A Man Escaped (1956) and Jean Genet’s Un chant d’amour (1950). Both prison films, both about Men on Fire. One implicitly gay, the other explicitly so. Alone in my cell, like in Bresson, I am doing my bit to chip my way through to collective freedom and enlightenment. And, meanwhile, I am being presented, like in Genet, with things—all kinds of things—to help me along,...

David Ayer made his name as screenwriter of Training Day, in which Denzel Washington went down the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles as a smart bent cop showing the ropes to honest rookie Ethan Hawke. There is little moral coloration in his directorial debut, the entertaining police-procedural End of Watch, just different shades of honest Lapd blue, as principally worn by dedicated patrol officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has most of the jokes and is considering matrimony, and his Hispanic buddy, Mike Zavala (Michael Peña), who does most of the driving and is a long married father. They're a more realistic version of Lethal Weapon's Riggs and Murtaugh.
Both actors are first rate, their friendship palpable, their professional conduct (tempered by practical joking and youthful bravado) convincing. During the course of their daily watch, they take on every sort of case from fires and domestic disturbance...

Jake Gyllenhaal's new cop thriller is the latest in a tired movie trend
You know that feeling when you're working as a beat cop in South Central Los Angeles, keeping an assemblage of thugs, gangbangers and drug cartels in line on a daily basis, and yet you remain so starved of adrenaline that you decide to take up gonzo documentary film-making as a sideline? Brian Taylor, the renegade protagonist of Us indie hit End of Watch certainly does; or at least we can assume so, because the film is the latest in an increasingly long line of "found footage" movies, and Brian – armed only with a stockpile of handheld cameras – is its ostensible creator.
The central conceit of the found footage genre – fictional characters, be they priests, partygoers or palaeontologists, suddenly being struck by the inexplicable urge to immortalise the drama of their lives on film – can be a...

MTV has put in development Blackwood, a drama from Lionsgate Television and Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet Prods. It is based on the young adult book of the same name by Gwenda Bond, which was published this past September on the Strange Chemistry Ya imprint of UK-based science fiction publisher Angry Robot Books. DC Comic book and television writer Peter Calloway (Brothers & Sisters) will write the adaptation. Blackwood centers on 19-year-old Miranda Blackwood who, when 114 people, including her father, suddenly vanish off Roanoke Island, begins to investigate the mass disappearance, teaming with her high school sweetheart. But she makes a chilling discovery when she uncovers that she’s at the center of not only this mystery, but one that traces back to the first American mystery: the disappearance of 114 people at what would be called The Lost Colony. The project stems from Grammnet’s deal with Lionsgate. Calloway executive produces with Grammnet’s Kelsey Grammer,...
