Cliff Saxton is the Archivist for Micds (Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School), known as St. Louis Country Day School when Vincent Price attended in the 1920’s. In 2011 I asked Mr. Saxton to write an article about Vincent Price’s days at Country Day in honor of Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which we were preparing. There is information here I have never seen in any biographies of Vincent Price and I thank Mr. Saxton for taking the time to research and write this article. In honor of it being Vincent Price week here in St. Louis with Victoria Price in town for three fun events (read about the details of those Here), We Are Movie Geeks has decided to re-post Cliff Saxton’s article.

Born in St. Louis on May 27, 1911, iconic actor Vincent Price retained a special fondness for his place of origin, and that love was reciprocated with Vincentennial, a celebration of his 100th birthday in his hometown back in May of 2011 (for summary of all the Vincentennial activities go Here). Because of their close relationship and her access to his unpublished memoirs and letters, Victoria Price was able to provide a remarkably vivid account of her father’s public and private life in her essential book, Vincent Price, a Daughter’s Biography, originally published in 1999. .In 2011, her biography of her father was out of print. but now it’s been re-issued and Victoria will be in St. Louis this weekend (October 9th – 10th) for three special events. Horror tends to come in many forms, but it can be truly at its best when something so offbeat comes along that feels truly original. The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rides Again make up Arrow Video’s new Blu-ray collection The Complete Dr. Phibes and manage to have this feel. These are two movies that stand out in the seventies as going against the trend when it comes to horror, becoming something that is truly special and felt tailor-made for its star Vincent Price.
The Abominable Dr. Phibes
The Abominable Dr. Phibes is our first introduction to the character as he seeks revenge on the nine doctors he considers responsible for his wife’s death. Using the nine Biblical plagues as inspiration for his murders the police are at first baffled, then the evidence begins to show that Dr. Anton Phibes, thought killed in a car accident may not be dead at all.

For fans of classic horror the thought of being able to see Theatre of Blood on Blu-ray is special enough, but add to that it’s being given the Arrow Video treatment and the beautiful Steelbook version and this may potentially be their best release yet. Thanks to his daughter, Victoria, late legendary actor Vincent Price is very much alive online as the focus of a new official website.
Victoria Price in December launched VincentPrice.com to give fans of the horror film great a personal look at "The Elegant Side of Evil." In a recent phone interview, Price told me what fans are getting now is just the start of what promises to be a comprehensive look at her father's life and career.
To date the site has a blog that Price authors, along with video, fan resources, and assorted news regarding her father, including an initiative to get Vincent Price on a U.S. Postage stamp. There's also a new section on the 50th anniversary edition of A Treasury of Great Recipes, which Vincent and his wife, Mary authored in 1965. Chicago – Scream Factory continues to impress with one of the most essential box sets of 2013 for horror fans — “The Vincent Price Collection,” featuring complete remasters of six of the legendary actor’s most beloved films along with hours of archival and new special features. The bonus material is cool but, as with a lot of these Scream Factory releases, it’s the HD remastering that is truly breathtaking. I don’t believe “The Pit and the Pendulum” looked this well-mixed in terms of color and shadow when it was released fifty years ago. It’s a great holiday season option for horror fans.

Infamous 1931 miscarriage of justice close to being reversed as state government considers law to allow for pardon
Sheila Washington vividly recalls the day she first learned about the terrible events that occurred in her small town in Alabama almost three decades before she was born. She was 17 years old and, rooting around for something beneath her bed, she discovered a dusty old book that bore the town's name in its title.
Scottsboro Boy was a memoir by Haywood Patterson, one of nine young black boys who in 1931 became entangled in one of the most notorious miscarriages of justice of the Jim Crow era. Wrongfully accused of raping two white girls, the nine came close to being lynched by an angry mob, were rushed to trial in front of an all-white jury, and ended up serving many years in jail, eight of them on death row.

An almost spectral-looking 2011 portrait by artist Rich Bernal of Vincent Price as he appeared in The Raven. Commissioned for the St. Louis Vincentennial.
2011 is the birthday centennial for Vincent Price, and the anniversary was celebrated by various magazines, blogs, film screenings and other events that honored the late actor. It was most memorably observed in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, where the Vincentennial was marked by a series of events organized primarily by Price fan Tom Stockman. Local newspaper reporter Raymond Castile and I attended many of the screenings, interviews, museum and gallery events in the more-than-month-long observance of the multifaceted man many think of as the “King of Horror.”
Raymond talked with a number of fans from around the world about their love of Price (including myself), and their encounters with him in life or on the screen. I later talked with a number of Vincent Price’s...

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” – The Twilight Zone first season opening narration
