On Thursday evening, Rolling Stone’s Future of Music Showcase was the place to be — and not just because it took place inside while storms were wreaking havoc elsewhere at SXSW. The third night of the event at Acl Live at the Moody Theater was all over the place in an excellent way, a women-led lineup that bounded from alt-rock to wildly fun punk to satisfying R&b to Day-Glo alt-pop, and lots more.

Austin City Limits, the longest-running American music series, continues its 48th season on PBS this weekend with a special performance from Austin’s own Spoon. In anticipation, Consequence has an exclusive premiere of their performance of the Lucifer on the Sofa cut “Feels Alright,” which you can watch below.
The guitar-heavy performance features frontman Britt Daniel commanding the song with rugged vocals and a poised demeanor as the group gives off a sense of authority gained from over two decades of experience. Slick riffs, tight harmonies, and piano embellishments show off the band’s musical chemistry and ability to play off each other’s sound.
Spoon made their Austin City Limits debut in 2003. Now returning for their fifth performance, the group joins the likes of Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Lyle Lovett with the most appearances on the Acl stage. The band’s latest set highlights their latest record, Lucifer on the Sofa,...

Spoon’s Britt Daniel has always loved gadgets, held a soft spot for studio wizardry. And it’s these tendencies that have helped keep the Austin indie-rock outfit so intriguing and inventive over the last two-and-a-half decades. But for Spoon’s tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, Daniel wanted to do away with all of that, and start with just vocals and rhythm guitar. That guiding principle resulted in a stellar rock & roll collection, and made Lucifer one of Spoon’s best records to date.

In the music video for their latest single “My Babe,” indie rock outfit Spoon hearken to the Seventies to pay homage to variety show host Jack Clement. Inspired by the country music producer’s short-lived series Cowboy Jack Clement Show, the band performed in front of a recreation of the set’s signature orange glow. The band shared the video exclusively via Facebook. They also shared a remix of the track by dub producer Adrian Sherwood.

Spoon showcased their unique brand of high-octane indie rock on Jimmy Kimmel Live with a performance of “The Hardest Cut,” the lead single from the band’s newest album, Lucifer on the Sofa.

Spoon are the most reliable great American rock band of the past 25 years. That might say more about American rock than it does about Spoon, but facts don’t lie. They’ve been at it since the mid-Nineties, and they’ve never made a dull record, thanks to leader Britt Daniel’s brilliant songwriting and a knack for nuancing their Texas indie rock. They do jittery guitar bangers; they throw in some soul; they try out electronics; they nod to Prince and the Kinks and Motown and Wire. But it...

Spoon have released a new song, “My Babe,” from their upcoming album, Lucifer on the Sofa, set to arrive Feb. 11 via Matador Records.
“My Babe” begins as a practically wistful ballad, but the song follows its plucky lead acoustic riff to a far punchier place that feels perfect for either an arena or a garage: “Oh, I would get locked up/Hold my breath, sing my heart out/Beat my chest for my babe,” wails Britt Daniel. “Let our hearts beat in time/Let the love go on and on now/My babe.

Britt Daniel knew he wanted to record Spoon’s 10th album in Austin, Texas. After recording the band’s previous two albums in rural upstate New York, Daniel wanted to craft Lucifer On The Sofa in a place where he could “soak up the energy of the city” and recall the way Spoon used to record albums back in the ’90s.

A newly released demo of Spoon’s “Inside Out” points to the band’s earlier era — and shows the evolution of the track. In this simpler form, it sounds closer to Spoon’s more straightforward music on their breakthrough records, Girls Can Tell or Kill the Moonlight.
Britt Daniels plays the piano on the demo, crooning the lyrics with a little bit of grit in his voice. The whole thing lasts less than two minutes, as opposed to the album track, which was one of the longest on the record.

Spoon have long been one of the most reliably great rock bands to emerge from the early Aughts indie boom. Their secret weapon has always been their restraint — riffs that simmer but don’t boil, lyrics about cautious hope, air-tight production that plays up their musical economy. It’s what makes you want to hear more of them. It has led them to masterpieces like “The Way We Get By,” a piano-driven declaration of desperation, and the dusky title track of this compilation here, “Everything Hits at Once.” And, for what it’s worth,...

We had a lot of questions after we watched (and rewatched) Childish Gambino’s “This is America.” The jarring, provocative and reference-rich music video for Gambino’s loaded track was ripe for analysis. But the first question on our minds was, “Who is Hiro Murai?” Murai has risen to prominence by directing episodes of Donald Glover’s (aka Childish Gambino) “Atlanta,” but he cut his teeth with other music videos that are Almost as haunting, mind-bending and creative as “This is America.” Here are some of Murai’s greatest hits.
“Signs” (2009) – Bloc Party
For just his second music video after working as a Dp on Death Cab for Cutie music videos, Murai directed this Lynchian trip for the English band Bloc Party. The video’s aggressive editing, grimy color scheme and images of bodies mashed up with disco balls and sound waves hint at the dark places Murai would go...

With car dashboards eliminating CD inputs and relying more on smart displays and smartphones, podcasts — both music-related and others — are increasingly becoming big players for a captive mobile audience. In a recent Nielsen Podcasts Insight Report, the number of homes that considered themselves “avid podcast fans” went from 13 million in 2016 to 16 million in November 2017.
With more than 240 music-related podcasts available on iTunes alone, it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff, so we’ve done it for you: Below is a subjective selection of 10 of our favorite music podcasts, in no particular order.
“Song Exploder” (iTunes/SoundCloud) — Film and TV composer Hrishikesh Hirway hosts this bi-weekly, 20-minute deep dive into a single song, with musicians from Solange and Lorde to Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent and Phoenix offering both anecdotes and the thought process behind their creations. In an episode spotlighting Lorde’s “Sober,” she tells the story...

Earlier this week, CBS announced that former One Direction member — and latest addition to the Christopher Nolan Players — Harry Styles is slated for a week-long residency on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” For four consecutive nights, starting on May 15, Styles will serve as the resident musical artist.
With that “Dunkirk” appearance on the horizon and a solo music career still in its early stages, you could do worse than Styles when picking someone to hand the keys to an entire week’s worth of late night. And having been through the process of a breakneck sketch show schedule, he’ll probably be a capable comedy sidekick for Corden.
But what if this residency is a smashing success? Which other bands and artists would be ripe for tenures of their own on the other major daily late-night shows?
Jon Batiste and Stay Human hold down the fort for “The Late Show.

My review of tonight's penultimate "Fargo" of season 2 coming up just as soon as I show you what a South Dakota necktie looks like... "It's just a flying saucer, Ed!" -Peggy There's a Roger Ebert review that's always nagged at me, not because it should be impossible for me to disagree with my favorite critic growing up, but because the reason for the disagreement has always seemed so small to me. Back in the summer of 1988, Ebert gave the original "Die Hard" only 2 stars, complaining that the movie's abundant technical merits, not to mention Alan Rickman's performance as the heavy, weren't enough to get him past the introduction of Paul Gleason as the Lapd deputy chief who refuses to believe that John McClane is a cop, or has anything useful to offer him and his men. "As nearly as I can tell," Ebert wrote, "the deputy chief is in...

Talk about a night to remember. Spoon crashed an after party in their honor after a show in Portland, Maine on Friday night. Jeff Beam's Loudspeaker, local Portland, Maine outfit performed Spoon's seminal rock albums "Girls Can Tell" and "Kill the Moonlight" in their entirety immediately following Spoon's own concert at The State Theatre. As luck would have it, the band swung by after their set to enjoy some of their own classics. Pictured top right in this photo collage courtesy of Sean Morin, you can see the back of Britt Daniel snapping photos and recording video of Jeff Beam's Loudspeaker. Above is a clip of Spoon doing an impromptu set of "The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine" and "Jonathon Fisk". As remarked on the event page, this was truly a "surreal" experience and one that I'm sure the Portland music scene will be talking about all summer. And just...

Few current TV shows are as cinematic as NBC's "Hannibal," and that includes the stellar music that accompanies each episode. If you're a fan of the series who's looking to add to your CD collection, then read on for some very cool news!
From the Press Release:
Lakeshore Records will release four volumes of music from the hit NBC television series Hannibal, composed by Brian Reitzell (Lost in Translation, "Boss").
The Hannibal Season One Volumes 1 & 2 soundtrack will be available digitally on August 5th and on CD September 2nd. The Hannibal Season Two Volumes 1 & 2 Original TV Soundtracks will be available digitally on September 2nd and on CD September 23rd.
“Visually it’s so artfully done and quite fantastical so I see it like an opera staging; otherwise, I might be more disturbed,” said Reitzell of Hannibal. “Listening to the music alone is scarier than in the context of the show.”

There’s a lot of excitement around the new Spoon album, “They Want My Soul,” much of it coming from catchy first single, “Do You.” In direct contrast to the song’s upbeat melody, the video is a bit of a downer. Lead singer Britt Daniel, looking dazed and confused from a head wound, drives through a city at war, but despite the chaos, he’s moving at a very leisurely pace. About two minutes in, we realize he’d not alone: his companion is a teenage girl in the backseat. With her headphones on and her blasé expression, she seems even less concerned about the unfolding destruction. Directed by Hiro Murai, the video is a case of not much to see and everything to see all at the same time…depending upon your view. If you can hang on until around the 3-minute mark, there’s an amusing pay-off.

Efficient, distorted, fresh and messy. That's how I'd describe Spoon's "Rent I Pay,"the first song to arrive from their forthcoming album "They Want My Soul." The band has in various forms of away-time for the last four years, their longest break. Singer Britt Daniel formed the Divine Fits, drummer Jim Eno has produced some great records from !!!, Heartless Bastards and more, for instance. I've gotten the impression from talking to Daniel before that he needs a certain amount of distance from his band to get anything done. He moved out of Austin, for instance; he writes lyrics separately, which is one of the hardest part of his job description. I love the crunch and pop of 2001's "Girls Can Tell" and the tight empty spaces of 2002's "Kill the Moonlight." I don't think I or the band could explain how those albums -- released one after the other...

Lifetime is making a movie about Donatella Versace and The Hollywood Reporter says that Gina Gershon will play Donatella with Enrico Colantoni as Gianni and Raquel Welch as their Aunt Lucia. I’m sure Gershon will be great but she’ll have to make us forget:
If only Ugly Betty were successful enough for a Fabia spin-off.
The next season of The Real World wil return to San Francisco and risk comparisons to the show at its peak. However, ratings are sinking — the current season is attracting half as many viewers as 2011′s return to Las Vegas did. Thus, the iconic series may be heading towards its series finale but not before producers try to adjust the format. The Real World has already tried being more substantial and wallowing in the worst of reality TV. What is left to try?
What will third greatest event in the history of television be?...
