Jack Black does comedy like few other actors can, both onscreen and offscreen. His latest stint comes by way of his universally acclaimed portrayal of Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which starred Anya-Taylor Joy and Chris Pratt.
Jack Black as Bowser singing Peaches
‘Peaches‘ is one of the songs that Bowser sings for Peaches, whom he kidnaps, prompting Mario to rescue her again and again in Mario’s story. However, despite being widely well-received by fans of the film, the actor, and the character, the song failed to secure a nomination at the Academy Awards, much to the actor’s hilarious charging. Not only did this get a reaction from Black, but he also used this to discuss his ideas for a possible Super Mario Bros. sequel.

Ariana Grande is moving on from a broken heart in the music video for her new single “we can’t be friends (wait for your love).”
The 30-year-old pop star unleashed her new album eternal sunshine on Friday (March 8). She celebrated the occasion with the new visual, which co-stars Evan Peters and pulls inspiration from Jim Carey‘s movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Head inside to watch the music video…
In it, Ariana plays a character named Peaches who schedules an appointment at Brighter Days Inc. The goal? To erase memories of her time with her ex, played by Evan.
The emotional video, directed by Christian Breslauer, documents the challenges of moving on after heartbreak and the pain of letting go. However it, also captures the exes coming out on the other side.
Fans already have a lot of theories about who Ariana is singing about on the song.

Ariana Grande is an influential figure in the music industry, and her ability to sing across four octaves of vocal range sets her apart from the rest of her peers. The pop star has released seven albums in her career, with her latest set to be released on March 8th, 2024, i.e., today. Grande often takes inspiration from her life, experiences, and pop culture. Her new album, Eternal Sunshine, is no different in this regard.
Interestingly, the name of Ariana Grande’s new album pays homage to one of Jim Carey’s iconic movies. Over the years, Carey has delivered some memorable films; unsurprisingly, one holds a special place in the Dangerous Woman singer’s heart.

Listen closely: On “Principles,” the jarring penultimate track of Kim Gordon’s new solo album, The Collective, are the words she’s wailing “an actress of life”? Or is that last word “light” or “lies” or “live” or something else? The legendary “Pulp of Trash,” John Waters hasn’t directed a feature film since A Dirty Shame back in 2004, but The Guardian reports this week that the Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, and Serial Mom director will soon be making a long-awaited return with a brand new movie!
The Guardian reports this morning, “Hairspray director John Waters is about to start production on his first feature film for 20 years, with Aubrey Plaza as the lead.”
The film is titled Liarmouth, an adaptation of Waters’ same titled novel from 2022.
Liarmouth is “a feel-bad romance,” with the novel billing it as “a hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime, and family dysfunction from the brilliantly twisted mind of John Waters.”
“Liarmouth centers on a scammer and compulsive liar called Marsha Sprinkle who splits from her partner Daryl and steals from both her daughter and her mother.”

It’s a good time to be a Sofia Coppola fan. Alongside last fall’s release of one of her finest films, Priscilla, we got an expansive book detailing her career. Now we have two new updates related to other peaks of the director’s career.
First up, a New Yorker profile has revealed that a documentary on the making of her 2006 feature Marie Antoinette is in the works. Sofia Coppola’s mother Eleanor Coppola shot behind-the-scenes footage from the production, as she did for her husband Francis Ford Coppola’s films, most notably resulting in the documentary feature Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse. On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.

Cat Power and Iggy Pop have teamed up for a new cover of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero.”
The cover arrives as a single from an upcoming compilation album titled The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, organized by In The Q Records, Bandbox, and the Women of Rock Oral History Project to help raise funds for Faithfull as she “recovers from Long Covid.” Thus, the version of the song that Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Pop have delivered pays homage to Faithfull’s 1979 version of the song, with a driving beat and an ambient sense of tension.
Overtop, Marshall’s multi-tracked vocals carry Lennon’s powerful words, while Pop dips in throughout with spoken word lines, sounding almost like a late-career Leonard Cohen, proclaiming a solemn truth with a low, commanding growl. Listen to the single below.
In a statement, Marshall expressed her excitement to be part of the project.

Iggy Pop, Shirley Manson, and Cat Power are a few of the artists who’ve contributed to The Faithful: A Tribute to Marianne Faithfull, an upcoming covers compilation honoring the legendary English singer. Before it’s out in full December 8th, Tanya Donelly & The Parkington Sisters have shared their rendition of “This Little Bird.”
Also featuring fellow icons like Peaches, Lydia Lunch, Bush Tetras, Donita Sparks, and more, The Faithful is a benefit album that hits especially close to home: All profits will go directly to assist Faithfull as she recovers from long Covid. Donnelly and the Parkingtons do their forebear justice with their cover of “This Little Bird,” with layered vocal harmonies and delicate, complex string arrangements.
“Marianne’s voice has always been one of my favorite instruments, from childhood through today, and her music and spirit have been life-long inspirations,” Donnelly says in a press release. “I wanted...

Jack Black brought his piano ballad “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie to the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday. During the surprise performance at The Game Awards 10–Year Concert, one-half of Tenacious D was accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by Lorne Balfe. Watch it below.
After entering from stage right, Black — whose character Bowser dedicates the song to Princess Peach (voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy) in the record-breaking movie — let loose an especially schmaltzy, over-the-top rendition of his first solo hit while rocking the same green suit and red hairpiece from the music video. Meanwhile, footage of Peach from the film played on the giant screen hanging over the stage.
Following its release in April, “Peaches” peaked at No. 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent a total of five weeks on the chart. Its music video, directed by Lyrical Lemonade’s Cole Bennett, has racked up 45 million YouTube views to date.

“I’m one of those people who will always have to find something to laugh about,” reveals playwright and actor Jordan E. Cooper. During the summer of 2016, he was reeling from the killings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling within days of each other. So, in order to discover a bit of levity, he decided to find “the light” within this moment of darkness. An idea popped into Cooper’s head: what if every Black American decided they were finished dealing with racism and inequity and left the country? The script for the play “Ain’t No Mo’” started to flow out of him. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In Cooper’s play, the United States government emails every Black citizen with the offer of a free plane ticket to Africa. A chance to escape racial oppression. A series of actors embody multiple roles, with each scene exploring how...

With the variety of dilemmas they cover, it was bound to happen. With Fantasy Island Season 2 Episode 11, the showrunners and writers tap into my Achilles' Heel for trauma, children of divorce who turn into pleasers out of fear of abandonment.
Yeah, I legit cried when Arthur and Melanie owned their suckiness because only on Fantasy Island do we get to see parents turn their crappy parenting around. But I could be jaded about this sort of thing.
Meanwhile, Ruby's response to learning about Elena's interference with Isla is such an authentic reaction I could kiss the writer that wrote those scenes. Talk about respecting the character.
While some might argue that Elena's actions echo that of an overprotective parent, a stronger parallel can be drawn between our Ms. Roarke and the Island's newest guest, the jilted and bereft Laura Turner.

A week after Renfield and The Pope’s Exorcist failed to open in double digits, we have Evil Dead Rise surpassing expectations with a $23.5 million opening weekend. Pretty solid when you consider the original 1981 classic made just $2.8 million, 1987’s Evil Dead II made $5.9 million, 1992’s classic Army of Darkness pulled in $11.5 million while 2013’s re-imagining saw the cult series soar to new heights by opening with $25.7 million on its way to a $97.5 million worldwide total. With pretty solid reviews, including a 9/10 from our own Jessica Dwyer and an 81% audience score (which is actually pretty solid for a horror film), this gore fest has all the makings for a decent run at the box office, especially when you consider the budget for the film was kept at a modest $19 million as it was originally meant to drop directly onto HBO Max.

More good programming coming your way this week. If you think it sounds bad, but we say it's good, have some faith!!
This week, you can't go wrong with Hallmark's A Pinch of Portugal, Amityville: An Origin Story on MGM+ (it follows the From premiere!), or Saint X on Hulu.
Love & Death on HBO Max is well worth the watch (no matter how much you know about the story), and the movie Clock on Hulu will give women nightmares. We're loving these female-driven productions.

Jack Black has gone above and beyond when it comes to promoting The Super Mario Bros Movie, and that includes starring in Peaches, a music video which finds the actor dressed up as Bowser while proclaiming his love for Princess Peach. You can check out the Peaches music video below and find yourself humming it for the rest of the day.

What began as an unlikely friendship between three misfit creatures — a sloth, a mammoth believing he was the last of his kind and a saber-toothed tiger that doesn’t want to be violent — in “Ice Age” (2002) has stretched into a storied saga of the trio’s journey through all kinds of realms as warming slowly melts their world across five “Ice Age” movies and one spinoff.

The podcast is produced, edited and hosted by Amanda.
“This podcast is my dream project. It unites my lifelong love of cats with my pattern detection skills, my passion for storytelling, and my curiosity for all things art, culture and history,” said Amanda. “Especially in these polarizing times, it’s such a joy to use research to playfully deconstruct and interrogate the black-and-white assumptions we have, such as the false binary of cat versus dog. At 23, Sinéad O’Connor was a chart-topping international superstar. By the time she turned 26, she was fodder for jokes. She was hardly the first and wouldn’t be the last female pop artist to be derided for coloring outside the lines, but as a sympathetic and perceptive new documentary reminds us, O’Connor wasn’t vilified simply for being erratic or unclassifiable, though that surely didn’t help.
“Everybody felt it was Ok to kick the shit out of me,” O’Connor recalls in a new interview for Kathryn Ferguson’s Nothing Compares. “I regret that I was so sad because of it,” she adds, her crystalline voice deepened by the years. The fallout from what she endured, and her retreat from the limelight and ensuing struggles, are alluded to but not explored here; the focus of Kathryn Ferguson’s first feature-length film is O’Connor’s ahead-of-the-mainstream courage, and her outrage.

Taylor Swift has a new single out and the internet has thoughts. Lots of thoughts. But you already knew that. (Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last day or so. In which case, welcome back!) While Twitter is busy with arguments over what "Look What You Made Me Do" is really about, who it's aimed at, whether or not it's intentionally using the beat of that one Peaches song from Mean Girls, and if the song's even any good, we're over here realizing that the lyrics about a woman pushed into doing things she didn't want to do after endless unfair treatment makes the perfect theme song for more than a few of our favorite women on TV. And we're not just talking about the ladies...

If you’re a total procrastinator, don’t have a creative bone in your body, or are cursed with the unfortunate combination of both those traits, Halloween can be a particularly challenging holiday. Not only do you have to come up with an inventive costume that all of your friends will immediately recognize, but you’re then faced with the burden of one-upping yourself every year for the rest of your life. Returning to the form of feature-length documentary to chronicle a subculture and the people that take pleasure in it, Brent Hodge’s third feature The Pistol Shrimps follows a recreational basketball team with a starting line-up that includes comediennes Aubrey Plaza and Molly Hawkey. The Shrimps, started as an impromptu team, inspired the league to grow into something somewhat serious — the team is even required to hold practices now. Oddly the team and the league inspire a podcast (Pistol Shrimp Radio) hosted by Matt Gourley and Mark McConville mixing alt comedy, geeky fandom and sports talk radio as the men become experts on all things Pistol Shrimps. This of course requires more energy, dedication and mental bandwidth than most men would have and, although they’re not the focus, their passion is reminiscent of the men that love My Little Pony, the subject of Hodge’s first feature A Brony Tale.

The second season of Jill Soloway's Transparent takes a deeper dive into queerness — it's not just Maura, played by Jeffrey Tambor, who must navigate her gender and sexuality, but each member of the Pfefferman clan. The change hasn't simply been in front of the camera, but behind it: Soloway brought a trans writer, Lady J, and a trans director, Silas Howard, into the fold for the second season. Howard was in the band Tribe 8, one of the first queercore groups from San Francisco, for many years before making his directorial debut in 2001 at Sundance with By Hook or By Crook, alongside artist Harry Dodge. (Fun fact: He's the godfather of Dodge and Maggie Nelson's child, Iggy.) Since then he's made other films as well as a recent music video for Peaches' "I Mean Something." Vulture met up with Howard at the offices of marketing agency Girlie Action...
