From Dumb & Dumber and The Martian, through to Arachnophobia and Steve Jobs - we salute the screen work of Jeff Daniels...
They say that when you play the Game of Thrones, “you win or you die”. The Game of Jeff Daniels, however, is an undeniably different beast and for the most part is a definite “you win or you win”. After viewing dozens of Jeff Daniels movies and spending many, many hours with his on-screen personas, it’s fair to say that the maxim has been sorely tested but guess what? It still holds true. This list has been carefully curated to celebrate the veteran actor’s talent, versatility and wit and no matter which (if any) of these movies you decide to revisit or check out for the first time, Jeff is guaranteed to give you something to love in each and every one.

Now under new owners, Hoyts Corp. plans to expand its circuit of premium screens and to introduce a new brand which will be pitched between a standard and top-of-the-range cinema.
Hoyts CEO Damian Keogh tells If the company will add at least six premium cinemas, branded Lux, in Australia and New Zealand this year.
He likened the new mid-range cinemas to the premium economy section of an aircraft, with reclining seats and more legroom than standard seats, but without the in-cinema dining component of the premium cinemas.
ID Leisure Ventures, a company controlled by Chinese billionaire Sun Xishuang, bought the Hoyts group from Pacific Equity Partners for a rumoured $900 million just before Christmas.
Pep had acquired Hoyts in 2007 from West Australian Newspapers and Publishing and Broadcasting Limited for about $440 million.
David Kirk has stepped down as chairman of the Hoyts group as his position has been abolished. A new local board is being assembled.

Damian Keogh has been appointed CEO of the Hoyts Group, succeeding Delfin Fernandez who is retiring after nearly nine years in the post.
Keogh has been CEO of the Hoyts-owned cinema advertising firm Val Morgan since July 2011; before that he was national sales director of the Multi Channel Network for seven years.
The change is effective immediately but Fernandez will remain until March 31 to ensure a smooth transition and will continue to serve on the Hoyts Group board.
"I have worked closely with Delfin and have learned a lot from him," Keogh tells If. He will retain his role as CEO of Val Morgan but says there will be a slight restructuring of the division's management.
Keogh says one of his aims is to improve the food and beverage offerings for Hoyts patrons, which implies its premium Hoyts Premiere service may become more competitive with Event Cinemas' and Village Cinemas'. Gold Class.

Former editor-in-chief of The Age Andrew Jaspan argues that Australia is just days away from suffering a major blow to its media plurality if mining billionnaire Gina Rinehart successfully takes control of Fairfax Media.
The next two weeks will be defining moments for Australia. It’s when Fairfax is likely to morph into Gina-fax.
On Tuesday Gina Rinehart, the world’s richest woman, is expected to confirm that she has acquired up to 19.9% of Fairfax. The current Board, led by ex-Woolworths and now Walmart director Roger Corbett, is expected to raise the white flag in their efforts to ward off Rinehart’s bid for control. Rinehart is believed to want two or three seats on the board, and control of the Fairfax’s editorial positioning. And what she wants she can afford to buy.

Howl
Directed by: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman
Cast: James Franco, Jon Hamm, Jeff Daniels
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: Nr
Release Date: September 24, 2010 (limited)
Plot: A drama centered on the obscenity trial Allen Ginsberg (Franco) faced after the publication of his poem, Howl.
Who’S It For? Champions of free speech, lovers of the Beat Generation, and Ginsberg fans alike will adore this film. For those unfamiliar with Ginsberg and Beat, this film will likely be less powerful, but Franco’s performance as Ginsberg is solid enough to enthrall even the most disinterested.
Expectations: While I can’t say that Ginsberg’s obscenity trial was ever at the top of my buzz-list, I have enjoyed watching James Franco in just about everything he’s done. Now that the fourth season of Weeds is over, production has settled down to take a break after a tumultuous season that ended with Nancy Botwin revealing that she is pregnant with what we assume is Esteban’s baby. More intrigue came about when we reported about Justin Kirk, who is still hopeful that his character, Andy would still have a shot in winning Nancy’s heart come season 5.
Meanwhile, Weeds star Mary Louise-Parker is gearing up for a new project. Earlier this month, it was announced that she will be part of a new biopic, which will be written, directed and produced by Oscar-winning documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.
The beatnik biopic entitled Howl is based on Allen Ginsberg’s epic book-length poem of the same title. The film will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the poem, and will feature animated visualizations of the piece, courtesy of graphic novelist Eric Drooker.

Obscenity! The '50s! Legal drama! Book-length poems! Ok, that last one is part of what distinguishes the upcoming Howl, in which James Franco will star as legendary beatnik writer Allen Ginsberg. The film revolves around the court trial that took place after Howl was published in 1956 -- and promptly banned for obscenity. Mary-Louise Parker, Paul Rudd, Jeff Daniels, David Straithairn, and Alan Alda have just been added to the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
All will play fictional versions of real-life characters. On the side of the prosecution (boo! hiss!), indie darling / TV star Parker will play radio personality Gail Potter, the reliably venal Daniels will embody Professor David Kirk, and the firm and steady Staithairn will be prosecuting attorney Ralph McIntosh. In behalf of the defense (yay! cheer!), Paul Rudd will play literary critic (?!) Luther Nichols. Calm and fair as always, I'm sure, Alda will play Judge Clayton Horn.
