It’s the evolution of animation. It can be argued that “The Simpsons” opened the door for Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, which in turn kicked down the door to let in shows including “Bojack Horseman,” “Archer” and “Rick & Morty.” U.S animators are serving up not only raunchy comedy but also sophisticated storytelling. Outside the U.S., animated features have a long history of telling difficult stories — most recently “The Swallows of Kabul” and “Funan” are two films that tackled horrific events. Animation aimed at adults is on the rise worldwide.
In his recently released white paper, “Adult Animation Finally Breaking Free of Its Comedy Shackles,” John Evershed, head of High Concentrate, which specializes in the packaging, development and sales of animated TV series and movies for adult audiences, notes that adult animated series have been driving ratings on both linear TV and SVODs for the past few years.

London-based financier and producer Anton, which already fully finances a slate of its own feature films and short-form content, as well as co-financing big-budget TV shows like HBO/BBC’s “His Dark Materials,” is moving into the development and production of its own scripted series, Anton founder Sebastien Raybaud tells Variety.
The 8-year-old company, named after Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, established its reputation with a film co-production pact — now concluded — with Studiocanal, encompassing titles like the “Paddington” franchise, “Non-Stop” and “Shaun the Sheep.”
In 2017 Anton entered a co-production partnership with the BBC, with an initial investment of £150 million ($193 million), to greenlight premium British drama with international appeal, such as “McMafia,” “Les Misérables” and “His Dark Materials,” which launched this week to stellar numbers.
Last year, Anton signed a sales, financing and production pact on the $40 million animated movie “Fireheart,” from Main Journey’s production team Laurent Zeitoun and Yann Zenou (“The Intouchables”), producers of “Ballerina.

French studio Gaumont said Thursday that its upcoming Celine Dion film will not be a biopic but a fictional “homage” that draws heavily from the details of the singer’s life and uses many of her hit songs.
The film – tentatively titled “The Power of Love,” the same name as one of Dion’s songs – is directed by and stars Valerie Lemercier. She plays “Aline,” a young woman who grows up in a large Canadian family, is discovered as a major talent in her teens, becomes a global sensation and experiences the tragedy of losing her husband, just as happened to Dion.
The promotional materials conflate Lemercier’s character with Dion, inviting viewers to “discover the incredible story of Celine Dion through the tender, funny gaze of Valerie Lemercier, who pays her a vibrant homage.” But the names of the characters have been changed, as well as some details of Dion’s life.

French actress and director Valérie Lemercier (Avenue Montaigne) is set to star in ambitious European biopic The Power Of Love (Famous) based on the life of Céline Dion. According to producers, the big-budget (around €23M) French-language project has buy in from Canadian star Dion and will feature her songs.
The film will retrace Dion’s life from the 1960’s to the present day and her relationship with her manager and late husband, René Angélil. The last of 14 children, the Canadian singer became a global superstar in the 1990s, selling more than 200M records, including hit singles The Power Of Love, Think Twice and the iconic theme song to Titanic.
Two-time César winner Lemercier will star as a character based on Dion (but won’t sing her songs). She will also direct the project, which is based on her script. Shoot is due to get underway in France this spring. Sylvain Marcel (Mensonges) will play Angélil.

Seeing worldwide sales sell-outs on “355” and “Ironbark,” from FilmNation, and Studiocanal’s “The Secret Garden,” the 2018 Cannes Film Festival proved the second big market in a row to buck, although only in part, longer-term pessimism.
After glacial-paced early trading, titles sold from Cannes first weekend both to the U.S. and abroad at a steady, though never spectacular, rate.
But if Cannes, like February’s surprisingly buoyant Berlin, suggested there is still life in the international independent film business, despite a tepid Sundance and dire American Film Market, it also delivered a sobering snapshot of new market realities.
Whichever way the 2018 Cannes Film Market is taken, heartening signs of continued market traction have to be placed in a context of a longer-term attrition in the independent theatrical market affecting both many mid-sized English-language movies and arthouse titles alike. The bottom hasn’t fallen out of either market. But their theatrical space,...

Bringing one of the biggest new independent animation projects onto the Cannes market, London-based Anton is lead-financing and handling world sales on “Fireheart,” produced by Main Journey’s Laurent Zeitoun and Yann Zenou.
Budgeted at $40 million, “Fireheart” marks a step-up in scale for the Montreal-based Main Journey whose “Ballerina” (released in the U.S. as “Leap!”) earned $110 million worldwide. Zeitoun and Zenou’s producer credits also include “The Intouchables,” which grossed a global $427 million.
Set in New York in the roaring twenties, “Fireheart” is written by Zetoun and Jennica Harper (“Some Assembly Required”) from an idea and story by Zeitoun. It turns on Maria, just 16, who dreams of becoming a firefighter, but has to overcome the challenge of being a girl with a highly overprotective father.

It turns on Maria, just 16, who dreams of becoming a firefighter, but has to overcome the challenge of being a girl with a highly overprotective father.
When New York City comes under threat from a mysterious arsonist, who is burning Broadway theaters down one by one, Maria disguises herself as...

To mark the release of The Death of Stalin on 26th February, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
The internal political landscape of 1950’s Soviet Russia takes on darkly comic form in a new film by Emmy award-winning and Oscar-nominated writer/director Armando Iannucci.
In the days following Stalin’s collapse, his core team of ministers tussle for control; some want positive change in the Soviet Union, others have more sinister motives. Their one common trait? They’re all just desperately trying to remain alive.
A film that combines comedy, drama, pathos and political manoeuvring, The Death of Stalin is a Quad and Main Journey production, directed by Armando Iannucci, and produced by Yann Zenou, Kevin Loader, Nicolas Duval Assakovsky, and Laurent Zeitoun. The script is written by Iannucci, David Schneider and Ian Martin, with additional material by Peter Fellows.

As ever, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards favor homegrown fare. Thus many nomination slots that might have included such Hollywood films as “The Post” or “Wonder Woman” went to the likes of “Dunkirk,””Darkest Hour,” and “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.”
Leading the BAFTA nominations field was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” with 12 nominations. But the Mexican filmmaker wound up taking home Best Director and the film won Production Design and Score. With wins at the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, Directors Guild and BAFTA, the directing Oscar is Del Toro’s to lose.
“Darkest Hour” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” followed with nine nominations each; “Darkest Hour” settled for wins for Best Actor Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and Best Hair and Makeup, while “Three Billboards” dominated the night with five wins: Best Picture,...

In the wee hours of the morning, the British Academy announced their BAFTA nominations, putting into place yet another major Oscar precursor. This voting block, known as the British vote, does hold some sway with the Academy. At the Academy Awards, they represent a solid portion of membership, so while SAG will always be the largest delegation, this one isn’t too far behind. That makes it a precursor worth taking note of. Obviously, as you’ll see below, there are some release date oddities that push some films from last year into this year, and of course exclude some of this year’s contenders until next year. That’s just how it goes with BAFTA… Leading the way was The Shape of Water with a dozen nominations, far ahead of any other film. Those 12 citations set the pace, while next in line were Darkest Hour and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,...

The 2018 awards season has well and truly begun. Over the weekend the Hollywood Foreign Press Association threw out their Golden Globes in a politically charged ceremony which was as much of a comment on the biggest stories from the industry last year as any gold statue handed out. Today the awards spotlight swings over to the UK as BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, announced the nominations for their 2018 Film Awards ceremony.
As in previous years the British Academy will endeavour to be seen as more than just another stepping stone to the Oscars. While there are a number of British-specific awards handed out on the night, the expectation is that homegrown productions will be high on the list of nominees. The 2018 BAFTA Film Awards will be handed out in a ceremony in London on the 18th of February of this year.

Generations apart, but connected by chutzpah and talent, Mel Brooks and Kate McKinnon have two of the most signature voices in comedy. Now, try to identify their characters in “Leap!,” the latest mediocrity for children from the Weinstein Company.
Either they were both so ashamed by the humorless script that they masked their voices well, or it’s impossible to imagine either one in the movie’s shockingly lifeless version of 1880s Paris. Directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin from a script by Summer, Laurent Zeitoun, and Carol Noble, this filmmaking-by-committee approach ensured “Leap!” got tugged in a million different directions — and none of them good. The movie is weighed down by too many secondary characters, which only serve to dissipate their flickering charms. No one in the film, even our heroine, gets more than a hint of backstory as the single-minded plot careens toward its predictable conclusion.

Chicago – One of the rites of passage for most girls in the U.S.(and elsewhere, I presume) is ballet lessons. Usually it lasts for a very short time, but some girls-to-women keep pursuing it, and may even become prima ballerinas. A new animated film named “Leap!” is dedicated to that spirit.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The headline is a lyric quote from “A Chorus Line” and their magnificent song “At the Ballet,” about the longing and destiny of dance. There is a bit of that in “Leap!,” but mostly it deals with the usual plucky-orphan-sticking-it-to-the-man and becoming a ballerina against all odds. And since it works at a kid’s level, the story is nothing to write home about. But the choreography is the thing in this one, as the animators used the exquisite movements of ballerinas and reproduced them in cartoon characters. For every little girl who has taken the dance stage,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Cheesy Euro ballerina-porn cartoon is full of dated animation, cringeworthy attempts at humor, bizarre anachronisms, and a terrible message for little kids. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about girls and women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ballet. It’s not that difficult, Anyone can dance ballet — I’m talking world-class ballet, not gradeschoolers twirling in tutus — as long as they really really want to. Everyone knows this.
That’s why it’s so easy for Felicie (the voice of Elle Fanning: The Beguiled, Live by Night), a tween orphan in late 1880s France who runs away to a Disney-esque Parisland, to lie and cheat her way into a ballet school at the prestigious Paris Opera, get cast in a production of The Nutcracker, and perform without benefit of a single rehearsal.

Steve Buscemi... you had me at Steve Buscemi. But then you add Jeffery Tambor and Rupert Friend, and I want to see this movie even more. The Death of Stalin is a political satire film based on the moments after Stalin died and it looks really funny.
As I watched the trailer, there were multiple moments that I just thought landed the comedy perfectly. It reminds me almost of Dr. Strangelove in many ways. All these comical representations of political figures dealing with an issue of a controversial leader passing away and what happens next. It's directed by Armando Iannucci who is well known for political satire. All the performances look hilarious and I love, that although it takes place in Russia, all the actors are basically playing it straight. No one is trying to do a forced Russian accent.

While his work on Veep led to one of the funniest shows on television, we’ve been missing Armando Iannucci’s specific brand of political humor in the cinema. He’s now finally making his In the Loop follow-up with The Death of Stalin and ahead of a fall festival premiere, the first trailer has arrived.
“A lot of it is based on true stuff, but what we’re trying to do is not just concentrate on these people. Within the story you see how their deliberations impact on people all over the empire of the Soviet Union,” Iannucci told THR. “So it’s quite an expansive, quite an ambitious scale. It’s both intimate and very, very vast at the same time.”
Starring Adrian McLoughlin, Jeffrey Tambor, Steve Buscemi, Olga Kurylenko, Michael Palin, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Andrea Riseborough, Rupert Friend, and Jason Isaacs, check out the hilarious preview below.
