In 2022, Netflix and showrunner Ryan Murphy released Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to mixed reviews and a tremendous amount of controversy.
While the series received acclaim from some critics for its performances and its unflinching portrayal of Dahmer's grisly crimes, others felt that the show went too far in humanizing the monster at its core.
Now, Murphy is preparing to court controversy again, this time with the story of Erik and Lyle Menendez.
The Menendez brothers are far more sympathetic figures than Dahmer, but the fact remains that they committed two brutal murders, which the show will likely depict in graphic detail.
Their murder trial became a national sensation when it was broadcast on Court TV in 1993, but our younger readers might be hearing the Menendez name for the first time.
So here's a rundown of what you can expect from a show that's sure to generate a lot...

The story of the Menéndez brothers, convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, will next be tackled by Ryan Murphy as part of his Netflix franchise “Monster.” Netflix and Murphy were set to confirm Monday that they are at work on “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the follow-up to the hit limited series “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
Netflix had ordered two additional installments of the anthology series from Murphy and Ian Brennan; this would rep the first. Separately, Netflix revealed that it also has what it called “exclusive access” to Lyle and Erik Menéndez to participate in a documentary feature from Campfire Studios.
The announcement of “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” comes as the case of the Menéndez brothers recently returned to the news headlines. The new Peacock docuseries “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” focuses on an allegation by Roy Rosselló,...

Netflix and Ryan Murphy have found their next Monster — or rather, a pair of them.
The second installment of the anthology series from Murphy and Ian Brennan will focus on Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty, at their Beverly Hills home in 1989. The umbrella title of the series will get pluralized, with the season going by Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Netflix also says it has “exclusive access” to the brothers for a forthcoming documentary.
Following the runaway success of the first Monster, focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix ordered two more installments and turned the series into an anthology that will tell “stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” The first season currently stands as Netflix’s third most popular English-language series ever of its first 28 days of release.

Edie Falco is heading to Pandora. The veteran actress is boarding James Cameron’s “Avatar” franchise, and will portray a general in the upcoming sequels.
“Avatar 2,” the first of four follow-ups, will hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2020. The remaining installments will be released on the same weekend over the next few years, with “Avatar 3” arriving on Dec. 17, 2021; “Avatar 4” on Dec. 20, 2024; and finally “Avatar 5” on Dec. 19, 2025.
Cameron, the creator of the original “Avatar,” already began filming the sequels. “Avatar,” the 2009 fantasy epic, remains the all-time box office champion with $2.8 billion worldwide. The director initially envisioned two sequels, but after meeting with the screenwriters, artists, and designers, he realized he had too much material and extended his plans for four more films in total.
Cameron and Jon Landau are producing through their Lightstorm Entertainment company. The returning stars include Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, and Sigourney Weaver are returning for the upcoming films.

One of the entertainment industry’s most notorious murders has been spotlighted in a most unlikely place – a basketball trading card.
Lyle and Erik Menendez, the Beverly Hills brothers who brutally killed their father and mother, entertainment executive José Menéndez and his wife Mary (Kitty), are depicted on a Hoops trading card from the 1990-1991 season.
The brothers were captured calmly sitting courtside on the card, an action shot featuring former Knicks guard Mark Jackson.
The eerie coincidence was noticed earlier this week and has since gone viral after being posted on Reddit. The photo would have been taken before they were arrested for the murders in 1990.
After a mistrial and deadlocked juries, the brothers – who claimed they were sexually and emotionally abused and feared for their own lives – were later re-tried and convicted in 1996 of two counts...

This year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie have eight wins already under their belts… but they wouldn’t mind one more, we’re sure.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
The good news for contenders in this category this year is that there is no juggernaut limited series on the scale of Big Little Lies or Feud to fill up all the slots with giant movie star names. The field is far more spread out this time around, even if one of those Big Little Lies Emmy winners is back in frontrunner position with a powerful TV movie. The list is impressive overall, with four past Emmy winners taking on a four-time nominee and one lone first-timer. Here’s how it looks…

Let’s make one thing clear from the start: No one, including me, wants a longer awards show. No One.
But when the categories just don’t accurately reflect the breadth of work that’s being done, maybe it’s time to give them another thought.
This year featured a range of powerful, resonant performances from women across the medium — from trenchant hourlongs to hilarious half-hours, from searing movies to compelling limited series, from scripted to improv. Women proved they could do everything men could. The year’s most talked about performances came from the female side of the ledger — from “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” Elisabeth Moss’ ever-more-complicated Offred/June, who tells us all we need to know with just one flicker of those eyes, or “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Rachel Brosnahan, whose word-perfect delivery of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s scripts makes us all wonder if she isn’t...

As the “True Crime” template goes, “The Menendez Murders” is based on the real story of brothers Joseph and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted in 1994 of murdering their parents. Felicity Huffman is going from one American crime to another. The actress earned three straight Emmy nominations for Best Movie/Mini Actress for playing various roles in the ABC anthology series “American Crime” (2015-2017). Now she has been tapped to co-star in Ava DuVernay‘s four-part limited series “Central Park Five.” Also joining the cast are a couple of young actors from recent Oscar-winning films: Jharrel Jerome (“Moonlight”) and Jovan Adepo (“Fences”).
“Central Park Five” will tell the true story of five teenagers who were wrongly convicted of rape in New York Ciy. Huffman will play Linda Fairstein, who prosecuted the case for the Manhattan district attorney’s office. Jerome will play one of the accused teenagers, Korey Wise, while Adepo will play another of the teens, Antron McCray. The series will cover the story from 1989, when the suspects were first questioned, to 2014, when they were finally exonerated and reached a settlement with New York.

Just how much do the Emmys love Edie Falco? She’s currently the only actress to win lead trophies for a comedy series (“Nurse Jackie” in 2010) and a drama series, and now she hopes to add to her record with a victory for a limited series. On Thursday Falco received a Best Movie/Mini Actress Emmy nomination for her work on the limited series “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders.” If she wins, that would make Falco the eighth performer from the “Law & Order” franchise to win an Emmy.

J.K. Simmons (“Counterpart”) and Edie Falco (“Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders”) sat down for a chat for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” presented by Shutterstock. The full interviews will air in two episodes on PBS SoCal Koce, the first on Tuesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. and the second on Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m. Click here for more “Actors on Actors.”
Edie Falco: What interested you in the role in “Counterpart”? And what scared you?
J.K. Simmons: I was first interested just reading the script, and then on about page 20 I started getting scared. The first 20 pages is just about this guy Howard who’s kind of a sad sack and a lowly cog in this weird sort of Fritz Lang monolithic government bureaucracy. And then the big reveal is, oh, by the way, there’s a parallel universe, and there are two versions of this guy.

Erik and Lyle Menendez, two brothers convicted of murdering their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989, are reunited in the same California state prison after having been kept apart in separate prisons since their convictions in 1996, more than 20 years ago.
Lyle Menendez made a transfer request from Mule Creek State Prison in Northern California to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, according to CNN, which cited a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Lyle Menendez was transferred on Feb. 22, but on Wednesday, he was moved into the same housing unit as his brother Erik.

According to CNN, the prison board saw no reason why Erik and Lyle should be kept apart. They’ve each been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
On Aug. 20, 1989, Lyle and and Erik shot their wealthy parents in their mansion using shotguns they bought just days before the murders. Their father had been a successful Cuban-American business executive, while their mother was a homemaker and a socialite. Both had been shot in the kneecap (among other wounds) which made authorities believe the brothers wanted it to look like a mob hit.
The Menendez case was highly publicized and has been the subject of a recent ABC documentary, “Truth and Lies: The Menendez Brothers – American Sons, American Murderers,” which dug into the family’s more troubled history than originally understood. It was a ratings juggernaut.
The brothers were also the subject of a “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders” in 2017, starring Edie Falco as their defense attorney Leslie Abramson.

Leslie Abramson, the spitfire Los Angeles defense attorney who represented one of Erik Menendez in two sensational murder trials, says she will not watch Edie Falco portray her on NBC’s “Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders.”
“Oh boy,” Abramson told TheWrap when asked about true-crime TV movie. “I have nothing to say. Absolutely nothing. Goodbye.”
Before she hung up, she was asked “Are you going to watch it?” “No,” she said.
NBC and Dick Wolf Productions are betting big on Falco’s performance.

Lawyers for Phil Spector released a coroner's report on Thursday which suggests murdered actress Lana Clarkson may have fired the gun herself. A report by the music producer's attorneys claims Clarkson - who was found dead in the producer's home - had gunshot residue on both of her hands and was shot with a gun inside her mouth. The document concludes her death was murder. It says Clarkson showed no signs of being suicidal and had not written a suicide note. The forensic analysis was released after over a year of being on "security hold" at the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office and was prepared four days following the B-movie actress's death on February 3, 2003. It reads, "Analysis revealed several highly specific particles and many consistent particles of gunshot residue on both the right and left hand. Therefore, the decedent may have discharged a firearm or had her hands otherwise in an environment of gunshot residue." Spector's lawyers, Leslie Abramson and Marcia Morrissey, explained their reasons to release the report in a letter which reads, "There is certainly no justice in maintaining this secrecy in the light of Mr Spector's being charged with murder." Spector, 63, who has produced numerous artists including The Beatles and Eric Clapton, was charged with Clarkson's murder in November and is currently free on $1 million bail. Despite the latest release of information, Abramson and Morrissey have decided against releasing the report on gunshot residue tests done on Spector the night of his arrest. Other documents in the coroner's file showed Clarkson had alcohol and the painkiller Vicodin in her system when she died.
