The concept of body swapping is so fluid that it fits into every possible movie genre. It sounds ludicrous on paper, but you can’t ignore the pulpy charm of it. Director Kim Jae Hoon’s latest Korean thriller, Devils, plays the audience, or rather deceives them, thanks to their affinity for this particular concept. Body swapping is introduced as the primary tool to move the narrative forward until you get to the big reveal. How you perceive things after the reveal determines whether or not the movie works for you. I thought it was quite gimmicky. I am not saying the idea was bad, but the execution of it is hasty and bland. A little bit of polish in the screenplay and editing could have saved it by bringing much-needed flair, but sadly, things didn’t go that way.

The highlight of the fest is that American filmmaker, photographer, and artist, Mark Pellington, will be in attendance at this year’s epic event. On Friday, October 6th, the Fest will be screening his 2002 cult classic, The Mothman Prophecies, starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Debra Messing, and Will Patton. Kim Jae-Hoon's "Devils" is the psychologically twisted South Korean remix of "Freaky Friday" and "Face/Off." Throw some "Freaky" in there to hit on violent slasher elements where a killer has complete control of an innocent's body, because why not? The melting pot of subgenres plays sterner than Jae-Hoon's science-freaky, body-swapping premise might suggest, but that's not a missed opportunity. "Devils" is a slippery crime thriller that plugs surprises into an albeit ludicrous concept, and while the ending leaves a tad to be desired, it's still well worth the mind games and manipulation at stake.
Jae-hwan (Oh Dae-hwan) is a homicide detective still grieving the death of his brother-in-law and ex-partner, killed on duty by a serial murderer with a dark web snuff channel. Jin-hyeok (Jang Dong-yoon) is one-fourth of the maniacs behind "Snuff Cinema," and the psychopath Jae-hwan obsessively hunts. Nearly two years later, Jae-hwan comes face to face with Jin-hyeok,...

It seems like the turn towards the crime thriller, which was actually one of the driving forces behind the current popularity Korean cinema enjoys, is back for good, as titles like “The Childe”, “Hopeless” etc eloquently highlight this year. Kim Jae-hoon also moves in the same direction for his feature debut, by coming up with a movie that channels John Woo's “Face Off” significantly, but definitely going much further.

Raging Grace (2023) by Paris Zarcilla
There's quite a lot to like with “Raging Grace.” Among its brighter aspects is a solid central setup by writer/director Zarcilla that makes for a wholly engaging scenario. The first half explores quite heavily and naturally the desperation Joy feels at keeping her life in order, despite it all crumbling down around her. This ranges from the struggles of finding housing for her and Grace, facing racism and misogynistic abuse for the work she does, and the natural indignation of being a single mother. This gives the new job opportunity with Katharine such a sense of importance for Joy which she can use as a means of escaping this lifestyle only to end up stumbling upon a far more dangerous threat inside Katharine's house which gets uncovered slowly during her employment. This is handled incredibly well for a great start to things. (Don Anelli...
