After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.
In the video, Lance covers the opening gambling scene with our heroes Jack Burton and Wang, the alley battle scene that...

Chinese director Wang Bing returned this summer to the Cannes International Film Festival, where, in 2018, his nearly 500-minute documentary Dead Souls premiered. Youth (Spring) (2023) compromises half of those minutes, in which Wang partially abandons the conventions of observational documentary and his tendency to blend into the landscape, emerging more present than ever. However, he remains true to the idea that the created intimacy – the reciprocal bonds among the members of a small community of workers in Zhili and that which develops between them and their audience – can only be achieved through the extended moments on screen.

The number of people credited as “Anonymous” in Jialing Zhang’s documentary “Total Trust” is chilling. Banned from China after making the documentary “One Child Nation,” Zhang relied on those in the country to help bring to life this examination of life in a surveillance state. The fear is real; in a coda at the end, we’re told that Sophia Xueqin Huang, a reporter critical of the government and one of the three women upon which the documentary focuses, was arrested on her way to study in the U.K. on charges of “inciting subversion of state power.”
In ways big and small, “Total Trust” tells audiences, the Chinese government is watching its citizens. Cc TV does its part; biometrics also plays a major role. But the true villains turn out to be the Chinese citizens who eagerly police their own neighbors.

Wang Jianlin, the Chinese billionaire who previously sought to buy a controlling position in Hollywood, is preparing to complete his imminent exit from the film industry. The troubled conglomerate is facing debt repayment pressure.
Wanda Film, which remains China’s largest cinema operator, Wednesday said in a regulatory filing to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange that Wang and his Wanda Investment vehicle expect to sell their remaining stake 51% in the company to China Ruyi Holdings.
Ruyi, which operates across film, TV and online games, counts games, social media and streaming giant Tencent among its largest shareholders. The Hong Kong-listed Ruyi previously bought 49% of Wanda Investment in July for $320 million (RMB2.3 billion).
Ruyi has made no comment on the pending deal. The Wanda Film filing asked for a two-day suspension of its shares and said simply, “If the above matters are ultimately implemented, it will result in a change of control of the company.

Chinese streaming giant iQiyi has hailed the integration of artificial intelligence into its development and pitching processes.
Owned by Chinese technology conglomerate Baidu, iQiyi has been well-positioned to quickly incorporate AI into several key areas of development and production.
The platform’s Chief Content Officer, Wang Xiaohui, told delegates at the Singapore’s Asia TV Forum & Market (Atf) today that AI integration has brought startling efficiencies to its content teams and allowed for instant responses to producer pitches.
In the development phase, iQiyi uses AI to digest large amounts of text from shortlisted novels and books to produce summaries. “We can turn 2,000,000 words in a novel into an 8,000-word document that outlines the plot and includes character analyses,” said Wang.
This has shortened iQiyi’s pitch and feedback process from 3-4 days when performed by humans to just one hour with AI. The summaries generated by AI have an accuracy of 90%, added Wang.

What’s your favourite Taskmaster task? Did it result in a delicious failure or a triumphant win? Was it a crafty solution from a cunning mind, or a bonkers, impractical response that could only have come from the brain of John Kearns?
We asked our writers to nominate their favourites, in order (and not including Prize Tasks because that’s already been covered here), and collated the results into the Top 50 below. With 15 series proper, two Champion of Champions specials, and multiple New Year’s Treat episodes, there were approximately 89,000 tasks to choose from, hence a nice, neat 50.
If you’re at all concerned about the scientific robustness of our approach, rest assured that Google Sheets formulas were used in the creation of this list, resulting in an entirely accurate ranking order that cannot be questioned. Well alright, you can question it.
So, what are the best Taskmaster tasks of all time?...

Orbiting somewhere around the Chris Rock-fronted Good Hair and Sion Sono’s Exte, An Asian Ghost Story riffs on wigs, their multiple lives, the mortality of hair, and its afterlife.
Floated into this exploration is the significance of Hong Kong as a midpoint between China and the west, with director Bo Wang using hair exports from the mid-20th century to tell a story of an under-documented industry, broader Asian industrialisation, and the barriers posed by the US to Chinese trade.
Wang’s playful, elegantly experimental film weaves eerie supernatural investigation and multiple potted histories with statically shot street scenes captured with lo-fi film stock in parallel with a narration told from the point of view of a factory worker who speculates on how a wig can retain the spirits of those whose hair was shorn to make them.
Wang’s affection for his subject matter is clear, but he also seems to delight.

Documentary festival IDFA, which runs Nov. 8 to 19 in Amsterdam, has revealed its first 50 titles, including the top 10 Chinese films selected by Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing, IDFA’s Guest of Honor.
The festival has also revealed the films playing in two of the three Focus programs: Fabrications, which probes the difference between reality and realism, and 16 Worlds on 16, an homage to 16mm film.
Wang’s selection will take the viewer “on a contemplative journey into contemporary Chinese cinema,” according to the festival. “The films and their politics are subtle in their film language, representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.”
The selection (see below), which covers films produced since 1999, includes Lixin Fan’s 2009 film “Last Train Home,” which was supported by IDFA’s Bertha Fund. The film documents the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.

London, Sep 3 (Ians) Love to mindlessly pop multivitamin pills, without any proven deficiency? Beware, you may be at an increased risk of cancer, warns a study.
The study led by a team from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden showed that Vitamin C and other antioxidants stimulate the formation of new blood vessels in lung cancer tumours.
The discovery, published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, corroborates the idea that dietary supplements containing antioxidants can accelerate tumour growth and metastasis. However, the risk is only when taken in excess amounts.
“We’ve found that antioxidants activate a mechanism that causes cancer tumours to form new blood vessels, which is surprising, since it was previously thought that antioxidants have a protective effect,” said study leader Martin Bergo, Professor at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

New York, Sep 1 (Ians) World No.1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek dropped just one game as she stormed past qualifier Kaja Juvan into the women’s singles pre-quarterfinals at the US Open in New York on Friday.
Swiatek eased past one of her best friends in Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday, beating qualifier Kaja Juvan 6-0, 6-1 to reach the Round of 16 at the 2023 US Open.
The pair have been close for nearly a decade, since their days in juniors. But defending champion Swiatek of Poland was still unwavering in collecting her third straight win over Slovenia’s Juvan, polishing off the victory after just 49 minutes of play.
This is Swiatek’s 10th straight win at the Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, as she aims to defend a title for the fourth time in her career.

Just 24 hours after crashing out of the 2023 US Open singles draw, Caroline Garcia shared heartbreaking news of her grandmother's passing back home.
The French player penned a letter on X explaining that her grandmother took her last breath on Monday afternoon, putting Garcia in an incredibly tough spot ahead of her opening match on Tuesday. The 29-year-old was hardly in the right frame of mind as she was soundly beaten by Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang 6-4, 6-1.
It was a dismal performance from Garcia right from the off. She served six double faults in the match, faced 10 break points, and was broken on four occasions. Tennis fans were left in bedlam as Garcia's season turned from bad to worse , losing to 114th-ranked Wang.
But the World No. 7 has shed light in the aftermath of one of her poor displays this season. She couldn't speak to the press after the match...

Chinese filmmaker Wang Bing is this year’s Guest of Honor at IDFA, which holds its 36th edition from Nov. 8 to 19 in Amsterdam. IDFA is also honoring filmmaker and artist Peter Greenaway with a Lifetime Achievement Award, a selective retrospective and an extensive on-stage talk.
IDFA will highlight Wang’s “innovative prowess” – in the festival’s words – through a curated selection of his work. His masterpiece “Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks” (2002) heralded a new era for Chinese documentary film, “granting viewers an organic view of contemporary China free from any exotic gaze.”
IDFA is also screening Wang’s “Man in Black” and “Youth (Spring),” two films that premiered earlier this year in Cannes, and which “demonstrate the filmmaker’s vision and capacity for innovation,” IDFA said.
Other film screenings will be “Alone” (2012), “’Til Madness Do Us Part” (2013), and “Mrs. Fang” (2017).
Wang will also give an indepth Master Talk.

New Delhi, Aug 13 (Ians) Having a bad hair day? Blame your genes, according to the first gene mapping study on human scalp hair whorls.
The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, showed that hair whorl direction has a genetic basis, but also that it is affected by multiple genes.
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China identified four associated genetic variants that are likely to influence hair whorl direction.
A hair whorl is a patch of hair growing in a circular pattern around a point specified by hair follicle orientations. As an easily observed human trait, scalp hair whorl pattern is typically defined by the whorl number (single or double whorl) and whorl direction.
Because atypical whorl patterns have been observed in patients with abnormal neurological development, understanding the genetic basis of whorl patterns may help unravel important biological processes.
“We know very little about why we look like we do.
