It’s been a long wait for NBC’s Chicago Med to return with its 9th Season but with the premiere less than a week away (January 17), Deadline has some juicy nuggets to tease about the show’s return.
In the Season 8 finale, the medical drama said goodbye to Day 1-er Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) who handed in his resignation after finding himself more and more unsettled with the new changes implemented at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center following Jack Dayton’s purchase of the hospital. His main concern was Dayton’s insistence on using the O.R. 2.0. even after a machine error caused the death of a patient and could’ve also claimed Dayton’s life.
Dayton’s live surgery for investors cost him nearly all his money after showing the high-tech machine wasn’t ready for showtime. So to stay afloat financially, Dayton sells the hospital.

There's never a dull moment on Chicago Med, but the NBC drama will open its doors to someone with ties to one of the show's longest-serving cast members.
TVLine reports that the series is eyeing "an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor."
The mystery individual will have a connection with Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt).
Initially, the new character will be a recurring player, but as we've seen in the past, people tend to get upgraded to series regular status if they resonate with viewers.
The unnamed new addition "comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up."
Like other long-running series, Chicago Med has lost its fair share of cast members throughout the years, but Chicago Med Season 8 wrote out many ongoing cast members.

[This story contains spoilers for “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?,” the season eight finale of Chicago Med.]
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has been chafing under newly profit-centered management of the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center since Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) took control of the hospital. The season eight finale of Chicago Med brought his frustration to a head, when Dayton insisted on going through with a surgery assisted by his Or 2.0 system, under protest by Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains).
The routine hernia surgery goes fine — no thanks to 2.0, which shows a complication that’s not there. Halstead admits to Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) that he manipulated 2.0 to produce a bad result — and protects Dr. Song (T.V. Carpio), who hacked the system — and hands in his resignation letter. “What are we going to do without you?” Goodwin asks him.
The law of unintended consequences, however, might catch up to the rest of the staff at Med: Dayton tells Goodwin that the botched public demonstration of 2.0 has wrecked him financially,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Chicago Med Season 8 finale “Does One Door Close and Another One Open?”] The promo for the Chicago Med Season 8 finale teased “someone will go,” but how? Does Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) take a new job after meeting with a recruiter? Does Dean (Steven Weber) die before he can get the kidney he needs, from his son Sean (Luigi Sottile)? Does someone else decide it’s time to leave the hospital, because of the recent changes or another reason? The finale foreshadows all of these possibilities. Just as Dayton (Sasha Roiz) is ready to show off what the new Or can do with his own hernia repair, Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Grace (TV Carpio) discover the system created a lesion as a misguided attempt to help him with a patient who died. Dayton tries to brush off Marcel’s (Dominic Rains) concerns at first, then tells him he trusts him (and doesn...

Both Guy Lockard and Sarah Rafferty, who portrayed Dr. Dylan Scott and Dr. Pamela Blake, respectively, are leaving NBC’s “Chicago Med,” Variety confirms. Additionally, Yaya DaCosta, who exited the show in 2021 after six seasons, has returned as April Sexton.
During the Season 8 premiere Dylan chose to leave his job at the hospital following the death of Jo (Riley Voelkel), an undercover cop he became romantically involved with last season, who died in the ER. Co-showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov confirmed his exit.
“Right now, we’ve finished that arc of his story, so he is leaving right now, but we have people leave and we have them come back. We’re leaving that door open,” Frolov told Variety. Schneider added, “We love Guy. He did a great job and was wonderful to work with. But what was sort of...

Chicago Med returns for its eighth season on September 21. Here’s what you need to know from its leading lady, Marlyne Barrett, who plays Nurse Maggie Lockwood. Where We Left Off This may be Chicago Med, but the Season 7 cliffhanger was all about fire. Flames moved through Dr. Will Halstead’s (Nick Gehlfuss) apartment building, potentially trapping him and fellow doc Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard). Meanwhile, Maggie (Barrett) dealt with the embers of an old love when daughter Vanessa Taylor’s (Asjha Cooper) birth father, Grant Young (Wayne T. Carr), reappeared. Where We Pick Up It’ll be all hands on deck as Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), Lt. Commander Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), and mentor Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) work to treat the fire’s survivors, and as Season 8 begins, Maggie’s concern focuses on Will. “He’s one of my best friends, he’s my brother,...

As we brace for the inevitable changes that the Chicago Med Season 7 finale will bring — as these final episodes before a hiatus tend to do — we’re seeing a couple of doctors doing so already. Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) has given up the position of chief of the Ed permanently to his previously-temporary replacement, Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber). In the finale, “And Now We Come to the End,” we’ll see if they can continue to work together after that while treating the son of Med’s general counsel. Also coming up: Will (Nick Gehlfuss) and Hannah (Jessy Schram) clash over a patient in need of a kidney transplant, Crockett (Dominic Rains) is faced with a tough decision when Blake (Sarah Rafferty) is in surgery, and Med’s family grows. Ahead of the finale, Tee and Weber discuss their characters’ arcs in Season 7. Ethan tells Dean that being...

There’s a big reason to look forward to the Christmas party at the end of Chicago Med‘s winter finale, and it’s not just because Dr. Abrams (Brennan Brown) is dressed as Santa. After all, there’s a lot going on in “Secret Santa Has a Gift for You,” executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider tease: Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has his and Sharon Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) VasCom investigation on his mind (after she’d told him to put it on hold); Dr. Stevie Hammer (Kristin Hager) and Dr. Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) are both trying to keep secrets; and among the patients are a four-month-old as well as a man who needs a liver transplant, which has Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), Dr. Pamela Blake (Sarah Rafferty), and Abrams working together.
