Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired North American rights to Night Call, a French thriller marking the feature directorial debut of Michiel Blanchart, whose live-action short You’re Dead Hélène was shortlisted for the 94th Oscars.
Slated for release later this year, the film follows a young locksmith who gets way more than he bargained for after responding to an emergency call that puts him in the crosshairs of a ruthless mob boss.
One evening, Mady (Jonathan Feltre) – a student by day, locksmith by night– receives an emergency call from Claire to open a lock. But the door the young woman wants to open isn’t hers, and the bag of cash she runs away with isn’t hers either. It belongs to Yannick (Romain Duris), a sinister crime boss who blames Mady and will stop at nothing to retrieve his stolen goods. In a city shaken by protests,...

Gaumont is launching “Night Call,” a high-concept thriller set over the course of a night, directed by rising filmmaker Michiel Blanchart.
Blanchart, who is repped by WME and Itaka Media, previously directed the short film “You’re Dead Hélène,” which was a festival standout and played at Clermont-Ferrand and Sitges, among other festivals. It also made the live action Oscar shortlist last year. Blanchart is set to direct a U.S. feature adaptation of “You’re Dead Hélène,” produced by Sam Raimi.
“Night Call” follows Mady, a student who works as a locksmith by night. He helps Claire get into her apartment and soon realizes that she lied to him about her identity and robbed something that belonged to a dangerous man, Yannick. Mady gets embroiled in a manhunt and will have one night to prove his innocence.
The thriller is set in a Brussels, shaken by demonstrations pitting Black Lives Matter activists against police.

"I'm the peacemaker, and I'll fuck up anyone who gets in my way."
Steve Buscemi... you had me at Steve Buscemi. But then you add Jeffery Tambor and Rupert Friend, and I want to see this movie even more. The Death of Stalin is a political satire film based on the moments after Stalin died and it looks really funny.
As I watched the trailer, there were multiple moments that I just thought landed the comedy perfectly. It reminds me almost of Dr. Strangelove in many ways. All these comical representations of political figures dealing with an issue of a controversial leader passing away and what happens next. It's directed by Armando Iannucci who is well known for political satire. All the performances look hilarious and I love, that although it takes place in Russia, all the actors are basically playing it straight. No one is trying to do a forced Russian accent.

While his work on Veep led to one of the funniest shows on television, we’ve been missing Armando Iannucci’s specific brand of political humor in the cinema. He’s now finally making his In the Loop follow-up with The Death of Stalin and ahead of a fall festival premiere, the first trailer has arrived.
“A lot of it is based on true stuff, but what we’re trying to do is not just concentrate on these people. Within the story you see how their deliberations impact on people all over the empire of the Soviet Union,” Iannucci told THR. “So it’s quite an expansive, quite an ambitious scale. It’s both intimate and very, very vast at the same time.”
Starring Adrian McLoughlin, Jeffrey Tambor, Steve Buscemi, Olga Kurylenko, Michael Palin, Simon Russell Beale, Paddy Considine, Andrea Riseborough, Rupert Friend, and Jason Isaacs, check out the hilarious preview below.

The film has already pre-sold to Germany and Austria (Alamode), Belgium (Alternative Film) and Switzerland (Pathé) and Pathé International sales chief Muriel Sauzay says there is a potential for the film to travel even wider.

French comic scribe and artist Régis Loisel created a darker, violent series of works based on the Peter Pan saga first created by author J. M. Barrie. Filmmaker Nicolas Duval wrote and directed an adaptation of Loisel’s graphic novels, which continues the gritty, Dickensian story in short-film form. Sparkly fairy Tinker Bell is included, but she’s (hurray!) not a blonde, white, Hollywood-ized version of the character. Young Peter isn’t an orphan here, but a child of an alcoholic, cruel mother. And of course Captain Hook makes an appearance, ruling his crew with an iron fist. Duval’s visuals are moody and magical, and we’d love to see another entry in this series that reveals what happens next, as we’re left with a bit of a...

We've got a real short film treat for you you today. This is called Peter, and it's based on a graphic novel by Regis Loisel. It tells the story of Peter Pan, but this is a much darker vision of the character than anything you've ever seen before. The short was written and directed by Nicolas Duval, and it's a beautifully made film. The special effects and visual designs are pretty incredible. I was pretty impressed by the short, and I would love to see the story continue.
This short film presents the first striking stages of Regis Loisel’ s work ‘Peter Pan’ where he puts forward his dark vision of the world in the way of a fairy tale for adults. The film displays Peter as a child, years before Sir James Matthew Barrie’s one. We all know that Peter Pan is an eternal child who hates adults...

Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, the filmmakers behind the French international comedy hit "The Intouchables," are re-teaming with that film's star Omar Sy for "Samba" at Quad, Gaumont and Ten Films.
Charlotte Gainsbourg ("Melancholia"), Izia Higelin ("Mauvaise fille") and Tahar Rahim ("A Prophet") also star in the French-language immigration-themed dramedy.
Sy plays an undocumented immigrant, while other story and character details are being kept under wraps.

The ceremony is over here in London, bringing together some of the finest and most talented people in the film industry under the same roof for one night. The BAFTAs are this country’s highest honour in film, and they have handed out their awards for the 66th time to those whom they deem the most deserving in the past year in film.
And since Ben Affleck is one of my favourite filmmakers of all time, I have been in a brilliant mood tonight, because he’s won (and very much earned) Best Director for Argo, and taken home the Best Film prize alongside his co-producers George Clooney and Grant Heslov. If you haven’t yet seen Argo, I can’t recommend enough how much you should see it as soon as possible.

The Guardian film team predict who will win what at this year's ceremony
On Friday Xan Brooks assessed the field of this year's Bafta contenders and found it "a hazy huddle of frontrunners, all seemingly bobbing back and forth in front of the finish line".
Lincoln is first among equals with 10 nominations. Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Skyfall and Argo all crowd in behind.
The awards momentum has swung from Life of Pi to Lincoln to Argo over the past few weeks. In a competition this close there could be upsets. There should be tears. There must be winners.
So here's what we think will take home scary award masks this year. We've listed all the nominees. Our predicted winners are in bold.

At this point in awards season, it’s pretty hard to surprise us. The Oscar nods are going to be announced tomorrow morning, and we’re pretty sure the top of the list will look like this: Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, Life of Pi … So anyway, we could be inclined to yawn when looking at the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards (a.k.a. the BAFTAs), as the L films — Lincokn, Les Miz and Life of Pi — are in the lead. That’s why we like looking at the details, like the Outstanding British Film category, which gives Skyfall, Anna Karenina and Seven Psychopaths a chance to shine. There’s also the Rising Star award, nominated by a panel but voted on by the public. This year Elizabeth Olsen, Suraj Sharma (Pi), Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), Juno Temple (Dark Knight Rises...

The BAFTA film nominations are in. You can read the list of nominees in full here...
We are now well into awards list season. We've already had the list of Razzie nominees, and the actors and filmmakers up for an Oscar nod will be revealed tomorrow. In the meantime, here's the British Academy's list of nominees, which features a strong showing from Lincoln, Les Mis and even Skyfall - a surprising inclusion, given that Bond movies are usually overlooked at these sorts of things.
Make what you will of the list that follows, but we're more than a little disappointed to see The Pirates: In An Adventure With Scientists missed out of the animation category, and we're pretty sure Ben Wheatley's Sightseers deserved some sort of mention, too.
The BAFTA awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 10th February, after which there'll be face painting and a meat raffle.

Colin Firth is in early talks to star in "Untouchable", the English-language remake of French box office hit "The Intouchables", for the Weinstein Company reports Variety.
"Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig is in early negotiations to write and direct this new take on Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache's dramedy which itself will get a U.S. limited release in late May.
Based on a true story, this follows a wealthy aristocrat who suffers a tragic accident that leaves him a quadriplegic.
He goes through several caretakers before bonding with a young, troubled caregiver, and the seemingly mismatched duo end up learning a lot from each other.
Nicolas Duval-Adassovsky will produce and shooting aims to kick off in the Fall.

Although Paul Feig is recognized for his dramedy work, remember last year’s Bridesmaids, it looks like he will be turning his attention to drama. That’s because a report from Variety has pegged the Bridesmaids‘ director to helm Untouchable for The Weinstein Company. The movie already has Colin Firth in talks to star as a “a wealthy white aristocrat who suffers a tragic paragliding accident that leaves him a quadriplegic.” After cycling through a number of caretakers, the man bonds with a young, troubled immigrant caregiver.
The movie which is based on a true story, doesn’t have a writer attached, but I am very interested to see if Feig himself will take on the project. He certainly has the talent to write a script. The trade reports that Nicolas Duval-Adassovsky, who produced The Intouchables, will also be producing Untouchable.
Variety adds that The Weinstein company hopes to begin production in the summer.
