Ryan Coogler has signed on to produce Universal’s jukebox musical based on the music of Prince.
The “Black Panther” director will produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Oganian through their Proximity Media, with Proximity’s Rebecca Cho executive producing. They join the project just over 5 years after Universal acquired the rights to the rock and funk legend’s music.
Bryan Edward Hill wrote a previous draft for the film, which won’t be a Prince biopic, but rather an original story inspired by Prince, who died in 2016, and his music. Atom Factory’s Troy Carter, entertainment adviser for the musician’s estate, will also produce with Universal Music’s Jody Gerson.
Proximity Media was founded by Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, and co-founded by Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis and Peter Nicks. The company’s projects include “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Los Angeles’ Frieze week got off to a hot start in a fairly chill environment: a roller rink.
“I’m so glad Jimmy finally found a place to entertain in!” cracked James Corden, regarding the estate of super-producer/entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine. The former Late Late Show host played emcee to a crowd that included a rare fusion of music and art royalty: Ed Ruscha, Brian Grazer, Katie Couric, Joel Madden, Benny Blanco, Bob Geldof and sports agent Rich Paul, aka Adele’s partner.
All convened at the sprawling Bel Air manse of Iovine for an art auction, co-hosted by Dr. Dre, to raise funds for a revolutionary education program. In 2013, Iovine and Dre (born Andre Young) opened the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, a novel university program fusing art, tech and business. In 2022, the duo went a step further, opening their own magnet high school in Leimert Park: the Iovine and Young Center.

The Black Music Action Coalition called Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner’s exclusion of Black and female musicians from his upcoming book The Masters “an offensive and absurd erasure.”

Women in hip-hop are getting a major spotlight from Netflix next month in a new limited docuseries. Per the streamer, "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" aims to recall the history, impact, and influence of women in the culture, as well as "their role in the genre's 50 years by reinserting them into the canon where they belong: at the center, from day one to present day."
The trailer, which was released on July 26, plainly states that "Black women are crushing it in hip-hop right now," from "dominating the charts" to "being the ultimate influencers of the culture." So, in their own words, the docuseries gives women in hip-hop the floor to share their stories and honor the sisterhood that's contributed to their success.

Seconds after hitting the red carpet outside NeueHouse Hollywood on Thursday night, Jennifer Garner stopped posing momentarily to ask the row of photographers a quick question (or two).
“What do you think? Is she doing a good job?” Garner asked, referring to the woman standing to her left, power publicist and Lede Company co-founder and co-ceo Meredith O’Sullivan. Garner then turned to face O’Sullivan, adjusted the lapels of her black tuxedo jacket and faux-straightened her white dress shirt, like a publicist might do for a client ahead of a gala like the one about to unfold.
The gesture perfectly telegraphed how the tables turned for the special event as Garner showed up to honor O’Sullivan, her longtime publicist and “dear friend,” someone used to shining a light on her A-list clients, not the other way around.

More than 100 Democrats in the House and Senate and independent Bernie Sanders have signed a letter urging the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to negotiate a fair contract with IATSE, saying, “We are united in our belief in the importance of livable wages, sustainable benefits, and reasonable rest periods between shifts and during the workday” – three of the union’s core demands.
The letter was signed by 31 senators and 87 representatives and sent to AMPTP president Carol Lombardini.
The union’s members begin voting on strike authorization Friday in advance of what could be the last round of bargaining before a strike that would shut down film and TV productions across the country.
The politicians also reminded Lombardini that industry workers “risked their health and safety” during the pandemic, and that “the entertainment you jointly produce is helping to heal our nation.”

We have, by and large in this pandemic year, lost our grasp on time, tossing out heralded routines and watching some minutes skirt by while others seem to drag without end. And yet Clive Davis remains unperturbed. The 88-year-old music executive’s storied pre-Grammy bash, which he hosted Saturday night in virtual form, lasted a formidable five hours — almost as long as its in-person counterpart. Davis, however, swapped out the usual ballroom hors d’oeuvres, champagne flutes, and side-of-the-room gossip for a potpourri of at-home artist performances, interviews, and decades-spanning reminiscence.

“Prince was like nobody I had ever worked with before,” says one of his longtime recording engineers, Peggy McCreary. “He never explained anything to me. You never knew who a song was for until somebody got called in to sing on it.”
McCreary, whose credits also include monolithic albums like Van Halen’s self-titled debut and Toto’s IV, worked with the artist from 1982 to 1987, the peak of his fame. You would think she would have known him well, but she says getting close to him was an impossible task.

Grab your raspberry beret, because new Prince music is coming! Though the iconic musician passed away in 2016 at the age of 57, his legacy has continued to live on. He graced the world with classics such as "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy," but soon, we'll get to hear even more tunes. On Thursday, the Prince Estate and Warner Bros. Records announced an upcoming posthumous album titled Originals, which will consist of 14 previously unreleased demos from the luminary. The song "Nothing Compares 2 U" that was released as a single in 2018 will also be included on the album.
Although Prince wrote a number of hits for other artists, he often recorded his own versions that remained under wraps. The LP will solely feature some of those tracks, including ones originally performed by Kenny Rogers, Sheila E., The Time, Martika, Apollonia 6, Vanity 6, and The Bangles. The songs were specifically chosen by Jay-Z and music manager Troy Carter.

Many artists put their stamp on Prince songs, but nothing compares to the Originals.
Prince had an ear for talent and an overactive imagination no single record label or artist could contain. He is known for iconic songs, which feed into the legend of his artistic mastery. Any one of his hits could have defined another artist for their musical life. Prince wrote songs which defined, refined, and redefined other artists as well. Prince wrote the 1984 hit “I Feel for You” which marked the next step in the evolution of Chaka Khan. Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to a number of classic songs from Prince’s catalog and is developing an original film musical inspired by his music, using the songs to drive a fictional narrative.
Insiders stress is that the film is not a biopic but an original story with Prince’s classic songs driving the plotline. The Prince estate has been inquiring with studios about such a film, and Universal Chairman Donna Langley worked aggressively to acquire the rights.
Sources close to the situation say the estate and Universal already felt that the biopic angle had largely been covered by Prince’s 1984 star-making film “Purple Rain” and wanted to do something original and outside the box. Meetings have begun with potential writers and producers and execs are hoping the film can be something like Universal’s “Mamma Mia,” with a completely original story where Prince’s music helps drive that narrative.

“I was always hoping that these recordings were still around because of the feeling that’s in them,” Don Batts, Prince’s personal recording engineer in the early Eighties, tells Rolling Stone. He’s reflecting on a demo cassette he made with the artist released Friday as Piano & a Microphone 1983, 34 minutes of Prince sketching out song ideas by himself. “It’s just him pounding this idea out so he could come back later and fill in the blanks. These were his little grooves.”

Spotify’s Chief Marketing Officer Seth Farbman is leaving at the end of the month, in a departure that the music streaming service said was part of a broader realignment of its marketing efforts, the company said in a regulatory filing.
Farbman joined the company three and a half years ago as part of an effort to raise the company’s profile in preparation for an initial stock offering, though not everyone in the company was a fan of his work.
“He’s played a pivotal role in establishing our brand around the globe and building the remarkable team that will carry us into the future,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said in a statement.
Farbman’s departure is the latest in a number of executive exits over the past year, as the company evolved from scrappy startup to publicly traded entity with a $32.7 billion market valuation.

Relationships between the old and new guard in music — i.e. the tech firms driving the streaming revolution and the record companies still producing the actual content for it — were always bound to be tumultuous. Case in point: Just a year after Spotify renegotiated its deals with the three major labels to get back in the industry’s good graces, it is testing new business models that could be throwing it right back out.

If you were still deciding whether you should see Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman when it releases later this week, we have something that just might sway you. The big screen adaptation of Ron Stallworth's true story, will feature an unreleased track by the late Prince titled, "Mary Don't You Weep." Lee shared the news with Rolling Stone, revealing that he acquired the song from Spotify executive Troy Carter, who also serves as a Prince estate advisor. Knowing that he needed an song for the end-credits of BlacKkKlansman, he invited Carter to a private screening for his advice.
"I invited Troy to a private screening. And after, he said, 'Spike, I got the song,'" Lee recalled. "And that was 'Mary Don't You Weep.'" The song is a Negro spiritual that originated from before the American Civil War and has been recorded by many other artists, including Aretha Franklin,...

Spike Lee and Prince went back a long way. Apart from being friends and mutual fans for decades, the two worked together on Prince’s “Money Don’t Matter 2Night” video and, more famously, on the 1996 film “Girl 6,” which featured a soundtrack made entirely of music from across the artist’s career, along with a new song he’d written specifically for the movie. And in the hours after Prince died of an accidental drug overdose in April of 2016, Lee threw an impromptu block party outside his Brooklyn office that ended up being live-streamed on CNN, and even got the cooperation of local police when it ran over the time he’d been allotted — that celebration has evolved into an annual event held in Brooklyn (read Variety’s coverage of the event here).

“BlacKkKlansman” has been earning praise and making headlines since its world premiere at Cannes, where Spike Lee’s latest was awarded the prestigious Grand Prix. Now, on the eve of the film’s theatrical release, there’s more news still: “BlacKkKlansman” uses the unreleased Prince song “Mary Don’t You Weep” during its end credits.
“I knew that I needed an end-credits song,” Lee told Rolling Stone. “I’ve become very close with Troy Carter, one of the executives at Spotify [and a Prince estate advisor]. So I invited Troy to a private screening. And after, he said, ‘Spike, I got the song.’ And that was ‘Mary Don’t You Weep,’ which had been recorded on cassette in the mid-80s.”
“Prince wanted me to have that song, I don’t care what nobody says,” he added. “My brother Prince wanted me to have that song. For this film. There’s no other explanation to me.

The deal, officially announced today, includes 35 previously released album titles from the artist’s catalog — several of which are among the best-selling titles from his original 19-year stint on Warner Bros. The Prince catalog covered under the new agreement will be distributed by Legacy Recordings, a division of Sme, with worldwide rights beginning immediately to 19 previously released album titles originally released between 1995 and 2010.
