The iconic British sci-fi show, Doctor Who returns once more with thrilling adventures featuring Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday. In its typical fashion, the show takes the audience on a ride, this time around it also hits a pitstop in 1960s London for a musical showdown against the terrifying Maestro, portrayed by the multi-talented Jinkx Monsoon.

Diversity and representation are vital in the entertainment industry. So when the Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa was cast as the fifteenth Doctor in Russell T Davies’ fourteenth series, Doctor Who, it should have been a cause for celebration. Sadly, instead of being met with open arms, he has faced a barrage of racist and homophobic backlash from online trolls.
In case you missed it, Gatwa’s casting in Doctor Who signifies the first queer actor portraying the Time Lord. Regretfully, certain bold casting choices will inevitably give rise to hatemongers, as was the case with the Masters of the Air actor.

However, Jinkx Monsoon, who appears as the villainous Maestro in the fourteenth series of Doctor Who, recently responded defiantly to the negativity, elevating the conversation to an introspective high.

Warning: this Doctor Who review contains plot spoilers.
To use some technical musical terminology – this one’s a banger.
Like most fans, I was very intrigued when I heard that Russell T Davies would be returning as showrunner. Having decisively brought Doctor Who into the 21st century, remade it in his own image and delivered a bona fide cultural phenomenon, Davies had subsequently gone on to make several other successful shows. It’s not like he needed to come back. He had nothing to prove. So it seemed safe to assume that if he was going return, it was because he had new ideas, new things he wanted to say, new experiments he was hungry to try out.
That was an exciting prospect. The Tennant specials had swagger, but they were something of a victory lap – comfortable 60th anniversary reunions tying up loose ends, though obviously not without surprises. Then...

“Doctor Who’s” Ncuti Gatwa just faced off against the franchise’s wackiest, most over-the-top villain yet. And that was before they started singing.
Enter “RuPaul’s Drag Race” superstar Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro.
Those familiar with Monsoon’s game wouldn’t expect anything else from her: the beloved two-time “Drag Race” winner is currently taking Broadway by storm, wowing audiences as Audrey in “Little Shop of Horrors” opposite Corbin Bleu. This summer, she will return to “Chicago,” reprising her role as Mama Morton after she became the cast’s first drag performer in 2023.
And she’s not done dreaming big — Monsoon’s still got her sights set on becoming a Disney Villain one day. “I’m available! People know how to get in contact with me. I got a great laugh, and I can sing. I was raised by Ursula the sea witch,” she says.

Disney and the BBC really don’t want any spoilers revealed for today’s debut of the latest season of Doctor Who. Fair enough, but I’m here to tell you that you will hear some of the worst music ever in these opening episodes of Ncuti Gatwa’s hopefully long run as the famed Time Lord.
Crossing timelines and absent granddaughters aside, that’s the point.
Since Rwandan-born Gatwa’s debut in December last year, his Doctor Who has already flipped a lot of scripts on what the Tardis travelling Doctor is and should be. Yes, the Fifteenth Doctor is the first Black and the first openly Queer incarnation of the Gallifreyan since the iconic British series debuted in 1963, as well as the first person not born in the UK to play the Time Lord Both those representations are long overdue and wonderful, but the real thing about this...

We’ve had goblins on Doctor Who, now it’s time for gods.
Drumming up excitement for the new season in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies is promising anarchy. In a preview of episode two “The Devil’s Chord,” Davies teases the wild, raw, tumbling, free-falling energy that comes from introducing “a godlike element into Doctor Who”.
That godlike element? It’s a god, as played by drag performer and Broadway star Jinkx Monsoon. In “The Devil’s Chord” – which comes out bundled with episode one on May 10/11 depending on your time zone – Monsoon plays Maestro aka the god of music. Her character is described in the pages of Dwm 603 as “a maleficent god”, “a deity with daddy issues”, and the episode’s titular devil.
(‘Maestro’ is of course also the Italian word for ‘master’, a connection that hasn’t escaped Doctor Who fans...

When you’re good to mama, mama’s good to you.
And life is certainly being good to Jinkx Monsoon. Cementing their place in the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Hall of Fame by winning “All Stars 7,” Monsoon strutted their stuff on Broadway, making herstory as the first drag performer in “Chicago” on the Great White Way. Now, the “internationally tolerated” star has an upcoming tour, and they just landed a part in “Doctor Who.”
Monsoon spoke with Variety over Zoom from London, where they were preparing to film a role in the beloved sci-fi series alongside new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. Even from across the pond, Monsoon makes it clear that fighting against the wave of anti-trans and anti-drag bills being passed in the U.S. is a top priority.
“I’m feeling very frustrated that our community is being scapegoated,” Monsoon says, calling out the so-called allies who have remained silent.

If anyone knows how to do the absolute most with their fifteen minutes, it’s a drag queen. While an appearance on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” can catapult a showgirl to a new level of fame, most of the former contestants can still be seen hustling for tips at the club long after their seasons are over. That’s just the way the game is played, and the savviest ones know to keep the show going if they want a lasting career.
Since first launching on LogoTV in 2009, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has brought the art of drag worldwide recognition, introducing a new generation of drag artists and innovators. Shangela, Trixie & Katya, and Bianca del Rio have all parlayed their “Drag Race” fame into sustained and successful careers. But for every former contestant who established lucrative comedy, podcasting, and reality TV careers, there are dozens more who were never heard from again.
