The 2023 BET Awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with dozens of performances that played like a musical family reunion as pioneers of the genre blazed the stage during a hostless but party-filled show held during the writers strike.
The Sugarhill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Erick Sermon and Keith Murray performed Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating rap music and honoring its roots as well as its domination in pop culture.
Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.

‘Rap Sh!t’ Music Supervisors Spent Three Months Trying to Clear Drake’s ‘No Friends in the Industry’
Issa Rae’s ‘Rap Sh!t” focuses on female friendships, but also female rappers and the challenges facing women in a male-dominated industry. For music supervisors Sarah Bromberg and Philippe Pierre, that meant pulling together a soundtrack of artists that not only reflected Miami’s rap scene but also the strong ties between its main characters.
In the Max show, Shawna has been chasing fame as a solo rapper, and she reunites with her friend Mia (rapper Kamillion) to form a rap duo. Together they navigate success, friendship and the lively city of Miami.
Here, Bromberg and Pierre break down key needle drops in the series and how they spent months trying to clear a Drake song, as well as having to change an original song at the last minute due to clearance issues.
“No Friends in the Industry” – Drake
Bromberg: This was not in the script. They were nice enough to not script Drake.

“Rap Sh!t” may not be the follow-up some expect from Issa Rae, but it makes perfect sense. In “Insecure,” Rae made her affinity for rap well-known with her character Issa’s popular mirror performances. So “Rap Sh!t,” which Rae created, is not a radical departure in the least, and the explosion of female rappers like Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Saweetie and others makes the timing ripe. In fact, the story itself bears a noticeable similarity to the rise of female rap duo City Girls, whose members Caresha “Yung Miami” Brownlee and Jatavia Shakara “Jt” Johnson coincidentally serve as executive producers.
Set in Miami, rappers Trina and City Girls’ hometown, “Rap Sh!t” follows one-time schoolmates Shawna and Mia who reconnect and begin forming their own rap duo. Since high school, the two women have been on different paths. Mia is a fledgling makeup artist and...

Rick Ross, low key, might have invented “yacht rap.” The Miami-bred boss specializes in cigar-to-the-sky manifestos that make the most ruthless coke deals seem like a company cruise. A grizzled behemoth prone to surrealist flights of fancy (and some motivational, meat-and-potatoes grind talk), Ross epitomizes extravagance, largesse, and team goals. He’s like a benevolent Shark Tank titan with coke residue still in his beard.

Regina King hosted the Valentine’s Day episode of “Saturday Night Live,” with musical guest Nathaniel Rateliff. It was the rare instance of a host promoting their directorial effort — in this case, her feature directorial debut, “One Night in Miami.” For her opening monologue, King spoke of how she grew up watching Eddie Murphy on the NBC sketch series, but quipped that she mostly lost interest after he left in 1984. Now we know why Lil Wayne started a "F*** Cash Money" chant at his last concert -- all talks of settling his $51 million lawsuit are off, and Wayne's laying blame directly at Birdman's feet. Sources connected to the label tell TMZ ... settlement talks broke off within the last month. As we first reported, Weezy and Birdman started trying to patch things up back in January. You'll recall, Birdman even vowed he had Wayne's back to the death.

Lil Wayne put Zero 'Respek' on Birdman's name by hanging out with Rick Ross and Trick Daddy -- 2 of the guys who prompted Birdman's infamous rant. Weezy and co. posed together in Miami right before Beyonce took the stage to kick off her tour. Never one to hold his tongue, rapper Birdman was reluctant to participate in an interview with the hosts of “Breakfast Club” on Friday morning (April 22) because he was convinced they had been disrespecting him.
The outspoken musician showed up at Power 105.1 and immediately started arguing with DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne The God regarding past interviews with Rick Ross and Trick Daddy.
Birdman blurted, “I’m gonna start this sh*t off straight telling all three of y’all stop playing with my name. Stop playing with my f*cking name. Period.
