Michael Cera’s cream wins the Super Bowl
Unlike the game, where the number of points scored determines a clear champion, it is up for debate about which ad truly “won” the game. But a case could be made for “Barbie” and “Arrested Development” actor Michael Cera’s whacked-out commercial for CeraVe skincare products.
The weirdness began, as so many things do, in the darkest corners of the internet, where, as many as seven years ago some probably very stoned people on Reddit thought it would be funny to connect the actor’s last name to the product. This continued for a while, until, in recent weeks, Cera was seen hanging out in Brooklyn pharmacies, signing tubs of the stuff. (The New York Times later revealed that this was all part of a planned campaign.)

The ensemble includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, and others. There were several cameos in the film, and Ben Affleck was also going to have one.
Yes, it’s true. Ben Affleck would have an exciting scene in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Michael, who played Allan in the film, revealed the same. Michael ended up filming the scene initially planned for Ben. Remember the scene where Allan starts fighting and beating up some men? It was first written for Affleck.

Wes Anderson has recruited his next star-studded cast for a new movie led by Bill Murray, Michael Cera, and Benicio del Toro, reports Deadline.
Anderson co-wrote the film with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. Details are officially being kept under wraps, but it’s set to go into production this year.
Last June, Anderson gave insight into the movie during an interview with Le Monde. “My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot,” he said. “I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”
Recent reports have also said the plot revolves around “three key characters,” with other Anderson regulars playing smaller roles.
While the currently untitled movie will mark Cera’s first time working with Anderson, Murray and del Toro have previously worked with the filmmaker.

Exclusive: Bill Murray (The French Dispatch), Michael Cera (Life & Beth) and Benicio Del Toro (The French Dispatch) have been set to star in the newest feature from seven-time Academy Award nominee Wes Anderson, which is set to go into production this year, Deadline has confirmed.
Anderson wrote the film with Roman Coppola, his regular collaborator going back to The Life Aquatic. Details as to the plot are under wraps. Anderson hinted at the project in a September 2023 interview with Deadline, noting that he and Coppola had just finished the script for a Del Toro-led feature before the start of the writers strike. Further cast is also under wraps at this point, but given Anderson’s tendency to pursue huge ensembles, expect many more names to emerge in the coming weeks to months.
Anderson is coming off of Asteroid City, a quirky alien invasion dramedy that follows a writer going about penning a world-famous fictional play.

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) goes on quite a journey to defeat Ramona Flowers’ (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) exes in the Scott Pilgrim franchise, which began as graphic novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, was brought to the big screen by Edgar Wright in 2010 with Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and most recently in Netflix‘s anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The show brought to life the characters who inhabited the pages of O’Malley’s books with help from the film’s cast as Cera, Winstead, and many more reprised their live-action roles as voice actors this time around. For those less familiar with the IP, Scott is a twentysomething Canadian band member who finds himself obsessed with Ramona Flowers, a mysterious American with an ever-changing, brightly-hued hairdo. Linked to the younger Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), his draw to Ramona outweighs all else, even when he learns she has a league of...

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula, Dylan Baker | Written and Directed by Kristoffer Borgli
Nicolas Cage delivers one of his best performances in the fantasy black comedy Dream Scenario, from Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli, which takes savage satirical swipes at viral fame and cancel culture. It also serves as a thematic follow-up to Borgli’s previous film, Sick of Myself, a superb arthouse horror which dealt with extreme narcissism and the pursuit of fame at any cost.
Cage plays boring, middle-aged college professor Paul Matthews, whose efforts in the field of evolutionary biology haven’t led to the sort of recognition he had hoped for, partly due to his own laziness in actually getting around to writing a book. At home, he’s supported by his understanding wife, Janet (Julianne Nicholson), though he’s all but ignored by his two teenage daughters (Lily Bird and...

On the style, co-developer BenDavid Grabinski said, “There was some sort of visual language that is a starting point already…The thing that was helpful is that [Science] Saru were experts on the books. It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.

Exclusive: Amidst one of the most creatively fertile periods in his career to date, actor Michael Cera has taken on new agents at CAA.
The in-demand Canadian actor is coming off of a standout role in Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s triumphant live-action take on the Mattel doll for Warner Bros, which has thus far grossed over $1.4B worldwide and seems likely to figure heavily in the awards race to come.
In addition to the highest-grossing film of the year, the fantasy comedy penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach has set records as the top-grossing title ever released by Warner Bros, and the highest-grossing film from a solo female director. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Cera portrayed Allan, the lovably awkward best friend of Ken who, unlike the central characters, has no counterpart in his universe.

After a historic summer, Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit film, Barbie, arrives in IMAX today, and previously unseen post-credit scenes are coming with it. In a new interview with Variety, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has shared that the new footage is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the movie’s unseen scenes go. Giving insight into what ended up on the cutting room floor, he highlighted one deleted scene that gave Gerwig quite a chuckle: a moment with Michael Cera inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
In the film, Cera portrays Allan — the now-discontinued Mattel doll intended to be Ken’s friend — and delivers the movie’s “most reliably funny jokes,” according to Consequence’s Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller, who even suggested that Cera’s memorable performance is Oscar-worthy. According to Prieto, the scene that cracked Gerwig up was a play on the famous dolly zoom from Jaws,...

As fate would have it, the decades-old “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” cast email chain was randomly revived by Michael Cera just before Netflix ordered its new “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” anime series, featuring the original film cast in voice roles. Franchise creator Bryan Lee O’Malley revealed the coincidence in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, noting that the long-dormant email chain’s revival was so random that cast member Chris Evans hilariously called out Cera.
“The cast have spoken about this email chain a lot but there’s one detail that I don’t think anyone has mentioned,” O’Malley said. “We were exchanging emails when the movie was coming out and then this thread went dormant for about nine years. Then, before this anime was even on the docket, Michael Cera responded to a meme someone had sent as if no time had passed. He just said, ‘Oh, that’s funny.

Nicolas Cage, after more than 100 credits, finally has his dream role, at least as comedy fans are concerned. He knocks it out of the park as a schlubby, balding college professor who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams, first his daughter’s, then an old girlfriend’s, and soon millions of people around the globe are seeing this ordinary looking, very plain guy walking through their slumber in rather non-descript ways no matter what the situation. He becomes a phenomenon, until it reverses and the whole thing turns into a literal nightmare.

Michael Cera is producing and starring in the film.

According to extant Barbie lore, Allan — introduced by Mattel in 1964 — is Ken's best friend. He was about the same size as Ken, so the two were able to swap outfits at a moment's notice. As the years passed, Allan's evolving outfits began to trace out a narrative for the man. In 1990, Mattel introduced Wedding Day Allan, wherein he was wearing a groom's white tuxedo (which quickly became a honeymoon outfit). It seemed that Allan (later Alan) was marrying Barbie's friend Midge. Additional toys saw Alan and Midge getting pregnant (customers were notoriously weirded out by the pregnant Midge doll), and Alan, later pushing his son Ryan around in a stroller.
In Greta Gerwig's new hit film "Barbie," Allan does appear, played by actor Michael Cera. "Barbie" begins in an Edenic playworld called Barbieland wherein all the women are named Barbie and they are all happy, capable, and in positions of power.

Michael Cera and Ryan Gosling star in the biggest movie of the summer, "Barbie," and both have received rave reviews as the magnificently neutral Allan and the insecure Ken, respectively. Gosling, in particular, has made waves for his blockbuster performance of the song "I'm Just Ken," which allows him to show off his dance skills and impressive vocal range. Unfortunately, Cera's Allan doesn't get to show off his vocal skills, which is a shame because Cera actually has a very nice voice, and he's used it to make some pretty solid indie folk music.
As it turns out, both Cera and Gosling have produced impressive indie music projects over the years. Cera released his debut album, "True That," in 2014, and it's a soft, wistful, lo-fi folk project that garnered generally positive reviews and comparisons to the likes of Elliot Smith. Though the album showcases Cera's impressive songwriting skills, one...

Michael Cera‘s super bad old phone prevented him, albeit slightly, from forming an even stronger bond with the cast of Barbie. All good though. Cera says his character in the film would have probably kept a distance anyway.
People recently reported in its Barbie special issue that before the start of shooting principal photography, Margot Robbie hosted a sleepover for her fellow Barbie actresses. The outlet quoted Barbie actor Simu Liu describing what took place.
“Margot was so great. She had a sleepover with the Barbies before photography started, and the Kens were allowed to either visit briefly or to phone in and say hi,” he said.
He went on to say that the Kens “made sure to show our support but not be overbearing with our presence,” so “all the Barbies and Kens got in a group chat.”

The “Barbie” press tour has reached its personal device stage. In a story covered Friday by countless news sites – and now this very publication – it was revealed “Barbie” star Michael Cera missed out on the cast’s group chat and its related antics because he doesn’t own a smartphone.
“I don’t have an iPhone myself. … I have a flip phone,” Cera told People as part of its new special issue on the Greta Gerwig feature. “But I still think I wouldn’t belong on [the group chat] anyway, because [my character] Allan is sort of in his own little world. Greta’s gift for me when I arrived was a picture disc of Nsync’s ‘No Strings Attached,’ which felt like somehow a real guiding light in the backstory of this character.”

It only makes sense that all the Barbies and Kens from Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film were in a group chat together, but one Ken said he missed out on all the text message shenanigans.
During a recent interview for People‘s Barbie special issue, Simu Liu revealed that since Margot Robbie hosted a sleepover for all the Barbies, all the Kens decided to start a group chat with them to “show our support but not be overbearing with our presence.”
But Michael Cera said he got omitted from the conversation because “I don’t have an iPhone myself. … I have a flip phone.” Cera noted that he was fine with it though, adding, “I still think I wouldn’t belong on [the group chat] anyway, because [my character] Allan is sort of in his own little world.”
This isn’t the first time the Superbad actor has been open about his dislike of modern technology.

Seth Rogen is teasing the Sausage Party sequel series and talking about an “unbelievably shocking” scene that even caught co-star Kristen Wiig off guard.
“There’s one specific scene that had a special screening for the Amazon PR people,” Rogen told Empire magazine about Sausage Party: Foodtopia. “‘You should all just start wrapping your heads around this now. You’ll probably have to talk about this a lot.'”
He continued, “We had Kristen Wiig in picking up a few lines the other day, and I think we’ve all become desensitized to it because we’ll just be like, ‘Roll the scene!’, and then she was like, ‘Oh my God?! This is insane!'”

Michael Cera is looking back on the “funnier” revision that was made to the script of 2013’s “This Is The End”.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the actor explains how “no pain, no gain” applied to the scene where he got slapped by Rihanna at James Franco’s house party.
Cera, 35, noted that, after multiple takes, the two — who play exaggerated versions of themselves, along with the rest of the cast — agreed to ditch the fake slaps and actually slap one another, leading to a “slightly revised” script.

Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza almost tied the knot more than a decade ago, all for one big joke.
The Superbad actor told Rolling Stone, in an interview published online Friday, that one time when they were driving through Las Vegas, they “almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married.”

Do you remember when Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza dated? Me neither. They met on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs the World and dated for a year and a half, but the pair almost took their relationship to the next level just for a gag.

Michael Cera was almost Mr. Aubrey Plaza.
The “Life and Beth” actor revealed to Rolling Stone that he almost tied the knot with “Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World” co-star Aubrey Plaza during production on the 2010 Edgar Wright film.
“We were driving through Vegas,” Cera said. “The idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other ‘my ex-husband’ and ‘my ex-wife’ at like 20.”
Cera and Plaza ultimately did not wed, with Plaza marrying filmmaker Jeff Baena in 2021 and Cera calling Nadine Cera his spouse since 2017.
However, the duo are reuniting for the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim” animated Netflix series, as announced earlier this year. The rest of the original ensemble cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Kieran Culkin, Satya Bhabha, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong, are also returning to voice their respective characters.

Four years and a global pandemic later, and the sci-fi anthology Black Mirror is finally returning to Netflix. According to Netflix, season 6 is set to be the “most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected yet” of the series. As Black Mirror has taken off in popularity, the show has become almost as well-known for its A-list cast as it has for its satirical takes on our world. With stars like Miley Cyrus, Jesse Plemons, Daniel Kaluuya, Bryce Dallas Howard, and so many more appearing in the series over the years, its no surprise that season 6 is just as stacked as the rest.

Complicated sibling relationships are the basis of Dustin Guy Defa’s The Adults. The film depicts the emotional journey of three siblings — played by Michael Cera, Hannah Gross and Sophia Lillis — reuniting after their mother’s death, a scenario that, while rife with potential conflict, also presents an opportunity for reconnection, understanding and healing. As Defa portrays, such a reunion can cause the distance that has grown between siblings over time to become painfully real.

A new series of posters for the upcoming "Barbie" movie has revealed just how stacked the film's cast actually is. Director Greta Gerwig's cinematic take on the immortal fashion doll stars Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, but the film will also feature an ensemble of actors playing different variations of both toys within Mattel's line. The most obscure of these references is Michael Cera's character Allan, a discontinued doll that Mattel introduced in the 1960s as Ken's friend.
Cera's appearance in the "Barbie" teaser trailer amounts to a quiet, vacant stare while he watches Gosling's Ken and Simu Liu's Ken fight about "beaching off," while his poster appears alongside the Ken variations with the tagline, "There's only one Allan." It's pretty clear that the gag is that Allan is Ken's dorkier, less sexy counterpart, which is an in-joke that...
