In Charles de Lauzirika's masterful documentary "Wreckage and Rage: Making Alien 3," producer David Giler laments that the David Fincher-directed sequel was doomed to disappoint because the studio was more focused on making a release date than a movie. Though I think they wound up with a boldly dour film that is every bit as singular as the movies that preceded it, his point is well taken. Setting down rails before you ride a train into town is not a bad idea. But the only thing Hollywood studios hate more than originality is learning from their mistakes.
Which brings us to 20th Century Fox's 2006 remake of "The Omen."
Amusingly, the studio that courted disaster with "Alien 3" 14 years prior opted to resuscitate their dead and decaying "The Omen" franchise because of a release date. 6/6/06 was only ever going to happen once, and, so the reasoning went, you'd be leaving...

Warner Bros. felt like they'd dodged a bullet in 1995 when Joel Schumacher's "Batman Forever" breathed box-office life back into their still-young Caped Crusader franchise. Though Tim Burton's "Batman" was an unprecedented commercial phenomenon in 1989, his 1992 sequel, "Batman Returns," fell $150 million short of the first movie's worldwide take. Audiences were turned off by the film, while McDonald's was so disturbed by the movie's dark tone that they canceled their Happy Meal tie-in.
As a course correction, the studio brought in Schumacher (with the tremendously relieved blessing of Burton), who embraced the campiness of the 1960s ABC TV series and threw a splash of color into Burton's dour Gotham City. It was a big, bright and goofy film that appealed to families. WB wanted Schumacher to go right back to work on the sequel. So, even though he was set to deliver "A Time to Kill" for the studio...

A new Creed spinoff titled Drago, from screenwriter Robert Lawton, is in development at MGM, we can confirm. When contacted by Deadline, the studio had no comment.
Details as to the film’s plot are being kept under lock and key. But we hear that it will center on the Russian boxer of the same name, portrayed by Dolph Lundgren—previously seen in 1985’s Rocky IV and 2018’s Creed II—as well as his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu), previously seen only in Creed II.
The Creed franchise launched in 2015 is a spinoff to Sylvester Stallone’s sports franchise Rocky, launched with the iconic 1976 film of the same name. Michael B. Jordan stars as Apollo Creed’s son Adonis and is reprising the role in the upcoming Creed 3—having also directed the pic slated for release on November 23.

Tom Cruise and Tim Curry in Ridley Scott’s Legend (1985) will be available on Blu-ray September 28th from Arrow Video
This is such stuff as dreams are made of. This is Legend.
After changing the face of science fiction cinema forever with Alien and Blade Runner, director Ridley Scott turned his visionary eye to the fantasy genre, teaming with writer William Hjortsberg (Angel Heart) to create a breathtaking cinematic fairytale with one of the screen’s most astonishingly rendered depictions of Evil. In an idyllic, sun-dappled forest, the pure-hearted Jack (Tom Cruise) takes his true love Princess Lili (Mia Sara) to see a pair of unicorns frolicking at the forest’s edge. Little do they know, however, that the Lord of Darkness has dispatched his minions to capture the unicorns and sever their horns so that he may plunge the world into everlasting night.

The Movie:
In concept, ‘Alien: Covenant‘ is what ‘Prometheus‘ should have been. In many regards, the film is a vast improvement over it’s predecessor. It’s also better than many people are giving it credit for. Instead of focusing more on the philosophical aspects of the story, this film is a straight up Alien movie, and that’s a good thing. Unlike it’s predecessor, ‘Alien: Covenant‘ feels like it’s a return to form for both the franchise itself, as well as director Ridley Scott. Set roughly ten years after the events of ‘Prometheus’, the film is both a sequel to that, as well as a prequel to all of the previous Alien movies. But this is also part of the problem with the film, that it can’t quite juggle all of these aspects while also telling it’s own unique story. Despite a few minor flaws,...

Chris Hemsworth is pretty sure that Thor is no match for Wonder Woman.
As the feminist superhero flick breaks box offices records during its opening weekend, star Gal Gadot has thrown down the gauntlet (hammer?) to the Thor star, challenging the fellow superhero to a battle while confidently predicting that she would win.
In a short video Katie Couric posted on Twitter Friday, Gadot, 32, shows off her superhero swagger.
“They ask me, who would win? Wonder Woman or Thor? And I think it’s Wonder Woman. Don’t you, Chris?” she said with a knowing smile.

Talk about melodramatic. Having stepped out of a Saturday afternoon IMAX screening of Prometheus in June 2012, your humble writer fell into a steep pit of gloom. A picture of a torn cinema ticket with the caption, “My broken heart” (or something to that effect) was posted on Twitter. A pub was visited; consolatory beers were imbibed.

Charles de Lauzirika has probably been involved with some of your favorite behind-the-scenes footage and DVD extras on classic films like Blade Runner and the cult series “Twin Peaks”.
With Crave (review here) he’s graduating to a new level of filmmaking by directing his first feature about an eccentric photographer who begins to walk down a very dark path. Moving into directing is a good move and a brave one (for anyone) but especially for Lauzirika since DVDs are dropping off more and more and extras are now harder to come by as studios don’t put the effort into new releases quite like they used to.
Crave is certainly a decent first effort but also an effort that Lauzirika himself isn’t completely satisfied with. For anyone looking to direct themselves one day, the below interview should offer some insight and advice for any first-timer.

While you may not know Charles de Lauzirika’s name offhand, you’ve likely collected a fair amount of his work already. The director of some of the biggest behind the scenes features on DVDs and Blu Rays including the Alien Quadrilogy box set, Blade Runner and The Amazing Spider-man among many others, has just seen his first feature film, Crave, released on VOD, on iTunes and theatrically this month. Crave is intriguing, complicated and immensely entertaining. It’s a film that is on one hand absolutely astounding for the combination of the emotional story arc and the rich world created within that and on the other hand a fascinating examination of a disintegrating mind.

Crave is the feature debut of Charles de Lauzirika, a man best (un)known for directing/producing DVD special features. So what, you say? Sew buttons on a dead hobo's suit! You know you love yourself some special features, and de Lauzirika is responsible for some quality content on many a quality disc. Hell, his Alien 3 featurettes might be better than the film itself. But does this qualify him to tell a more complex story? The story being that of a crime scene shutterbug named Aiden who becomes increasingly more detached from reality? A tragi-comic character study full of pitch black humor? An unlikely romance with moments of extreme discomfort? A story full of emotion and nuance and gray morality? Because that's the delicate balancing act...

Crave is so close to being the next fantastic piece of pulp cinema to depict vigilante justice, but at the same time, Charles de Lauzirika’s first directorial feature simply treads water for what seems like forever, only climaxing for a short period before going out with a timid whimper. There was no reason for this flick to march past the hour and a half mark, yet I found myself checking my watch an hour into the “mayhem,” only to find close to another hour still remained – causing an exasperated sigh. Like I said, Lauzirika is so close to creating a flashy bit of independent bliss, but our main character’s mental struggle turns out to be nothing but a misleading, long-winded chore.

From classic noir thrillers to modern special effects blockbusters, we look at 10 movies that began production without a finished script...
"We started the film without a script, without a cast and without a shark," was how Richard Dreyfuss famously summed up the nightmarish production of Jaws, whose last-minute rewrites, technical hitches and sinking boats almost halted Steven Spielberg's career before it had even begun.
Incredibly, Jaws was defined rather than destroyed by its arduous shoot. The presence of the murderous shark was implied through editing and music rather than excessive effects shots, while the absence of a finished script for much of the movie resulted in some of Jaws' most memorable lines - "We're gonna need a bigger boat", Quint's bloodcurdling Indianapolis speech - were either improvised or partly written by the actors themselves.

Every year at Toronto After Dark, there are usually a couple of films that surprise me. These are usually movies that have flown underneath my radar and end up being so entertaining that I can’t believe I hadn’t heard more buzz about them beforehand. This year, one of those films was definitely Charles de Lauzirika’s debut feature, Crave.
Crave tells the story of a middle-age freelance photographer named Aiden (Josh Lawson) who finds himself growing weary of the society around him. Being that much of his work involves photographing crime scenes for a detective (played by Ron Perlman), he has developed a hatred for those who would victimize others. Throughout his day, he fantasizes about standing up to the rude and awful people that he encounters; exacting what he feels would be justice upon them. As his mental condition deteriorates further and further, he begins to have...

There are certain films that change our perception of the world around us and I hasten to say that Charles de Lauzirika’s Crave is one of those world. Just as Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver altered the public conciouness to the fact that the Vietnam War was still very real to many people and that there was the possibility to be a monster in all of us, Crave alerts us to our own desires and need for change that we are unable to act upon. That it seems all the more impossible to “be the change you want to see” when there are signs all over telling you to do so. Crave may be the best feature film debut since Rian _____ Brick.
It all begins with Aiden (Josh Lawson), a freelance photographer who specializes in crime scenes. Tired of being around murder and death without being able to affect any change.

Hey everyone! Jeff here with a quick recap of Day Two of the Toronto After Dark 2012 film festival. Today was a little bit quieter, as I was still recovering from lack of sleep, but I did see one film that I very much like. The other? Well, we’ll get into that in a minute…
Luckily, when I got to the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, I was able to get a good seat, which always makes the screening more enjoyable. As usual, the first film was preceded by a Canadian-made short. This time around, it was Jovanka Vuckovic’s The Captured Bird. Seeing as Vuckovic Vuckovic used to be the Editor In Chief over at Rue Morgue Magazine, there has been a lot of buzz about this short; which is also her first foray into filmmaking. Essentially, the film tells a tale...

Crave
Directed by Charles de Lauzirika
Written by Charles de Lauzirika and Robert Lawton
USA, 2012
Although this review is going to be about Charles de Lauzirika’s Crave, it seems appropriate to talk about it in relation to Taxi Driver, because despite its best efforts to differentiate itself, Crave just can’t seem to emerge from its obvious shadow of influence. Throughout the film, the anti-hero pontificates to his imaginary enemy while waving his gun at them, has relationship-ending theatre-going experiences with his date, is involved in convenience store stickups, and has a deep-seated hatred for pedophiles and pimps; but he is not supposed to be Travis Bickle. Right.
The anti-hero is Aiden (Josh Lawson), a cynical Detroit crime scene photographer who’s troubled with the urban and moral decay of his city. An introvert by birthright, Aiden copes with his anxieties by escaping to the dark recluse of his inner fantasies,...

Ridley Scott turned down the opportunity to make a director's cut of Prometheus. DVD and Blu-ray producer Charles de Lauzirika, who directed the epic 220-minute Making Of documentary The Furious Gods, confirmed to Digital Spy that Fox offered Scott the chance to re-cut the film for its home entertainment release. "It was discussed quite a bit, the idea of an extended cut," de Lauzirika said. "But the theatrical cut is Ridley's director's cut." "Fox very kindly offered him the opportunity to create a new cut of the film, and he said 'No, this is my cut, and I'll give you thirty-something minutes of deleted scenes on the side'. "It was that simple, there was really no debate and no argument." De Lauzirika went on to discuss the making of The Furious Gods, which he began collecting footage (more)...

An in-depth look at the release of 'Prometheus' Blu-ray promised answers to the many mysteries of Ridley Scott's sort-of "Alien" prequel, as the Blu-ray's producer Charles De Lauzirika debuted his content-packed disc (including a 3+ hour doc titled "The Furious Gods") at a London event this week.
"For a film as complicated as this you have to try to capture everything you possibly can and figure it out later," said Lauzirika during his presentation, "but along the way you're starting to identify interesting story threads in terms of the making of the film. What are more problematic issues, what are more interesting abandoned ideas. I always love that part of it, when you see so much work put into things and those get put off to the side because they didn't organically mesh with things as they were developing."

The film world wobbles, shakes and fouls itself this week with trepidation at the further bashing, nit-picking and venomous bloggery that fans of the Alien franchise will excrete after the exploration of the Blu-Ray release of Prometheus.
According to Bleeding Cool, who spoke with Fox Special Features worker, Charles De Lauzirika, what will be absent from the release is an extended cut of the film. A longer cut was desired by Fox but director Ridley Scott refused to oblige, stating that the theatrical cut he assembled is the director’s cut. The 40 minutes of extra footage will be included as bonus material but at Scott’s insistence was not re-edited into the film.
Another 40 minutes spliced into the film? If the material is as revelatory and exciting as fans are expecting (e.g. Ripley gallops in on the back of the Queen brandishing a flamethrower) – wouldn’t Scott have included it anyway?...

Oh Marvel, what hath thou wrought? Now that their shared universe of superheroes has raked in mad cheddar at the global box office, everyone is clamoring to create their own shared movieverse, be it with DC Comics characters or Tom Clancy novels.
In another example of movie synergy, Collider is reporting that there is an aster Egg on the new "Prometheus" Bu-ray which ties the "Alien" prequel to Ridley Scott's other sci-fi masterpiece "Blade Runner," albeit pretty flimsily.
Amid the special features on the disc fans will find a letter supposedly written by "Prometheus" corporate figurehead Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) in which he clearly refers to his "mentor and long-departed competitor" which could only be Eldon Tyrell (Joe Turkel), CEO of the Tyrell Corporation in "Blade Runner"

Crave is the feature debut of Charles de Lauzirika, a man best (un)known for directing/producing DVD special features. So what, you say? Sew buttons on a dead hobo's suit! Because that's the delicate balancing act this...

Written by: Charles de Lauzirika, Robert Lawton
Featuring: Josh Lawson, Emma Lung, Ron Perlman, Edward Furlong

Crave follows Aiden (Josh Lawson), a freelance photographer who documents violent crime scenes on the mean streets of Detroit with the help of his buddy Pete (Ron Perlman), a world-weary homicide detective. Aiden's a nice guy, despite the voices in his head that constantly hector him, telling him he's a coward or that people that do bad things deserve to die. But, hey, everyone talks to themself, right?
Aiden realizes something's off. His constant observations of the dark side...

Fantastic Fest is almost at its end, which means it’s of course time for the one and only Fantastic Awards!
Now I could waste your time for a few paragraphs on the apparent ridiculousness of holding an Award Ceremony at the half-way point of a festival, but instead I’m going to save my tirades for more important matters, and just assume that Festival Organizers worldwide know what they’re doing. What I Will give you though is a list of this years Award Winners!
As you look through the list of winners, you may want to take note of a few key films and add them to your “To Screen” list. One of them is Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s homage to 70’s horror film’s Here Comes The Devil, which became the first film in Fantastic Fest history to completely Sweep the Horror Features...
