Martha Stewart didn’t talk to CNN for a new original documentary series the news outlet has produced about her. But she’s still the star of the show.
“The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” is a four-part series produced by CNN Studios, a division devoted to longer-form and enterprise programming in the wake of a strategic decision made in 2022 to scale back big ambitions to compete in the documentary arena. Under previous leader Jeff Zucker, CNN extended its aegis to the world of film festivals and documentary series led by notables such as Anthony Bourdain, Lisa Ling and W. Kamau Bell.
A good chunk of that work was scrapped after Warner Bros. Discovery, a big player in the world of cost-conscious reality programming, took over CNN, and installed a leader, Chris Licht, who had a mandate to pare operations. Months later, CNN would win an Oscar for a documentary...

There’s enough pressure shopping for gifts for your favorite and hardest-to-shop-for people. Why take a wild guess and risk a re-gifting situation (or worse, a post-gifting return and exchange trip), when you can make it easy on both of you by getting them something they’ll actually use? Yes, we’re talking about gift cards, but it doesn’t have to be as impersonal as it sounds.

With the opening of Funke this month — and last year’s arrival of a Jon & Vinny’s as well as Mexican steakhouse Hideaway — the Beverly Hills dining scene is on a roll. Three other new restaurants of note have just debuted as well as a slew of others on the way.
Espelette
French chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s namesake restaurant in the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills has closed after six years. Taking its place is Espelette from Waldorf Astoria culinary director Steve Benjamin, focusing on simple, coastal European dishes. 9850 Wilshire Blvd.
LA Dolce Vita La Dolce Vita
The legendary Hollywood hotspot — which initially bowed in 1966 with the help of Frank Sinatra as an investor — has reopened in its longtime Beverly Hills location under the restaurant’s third owners in its 57 years. Café Boulud is coming to Beverly Hills in a move that marks chef Daniel Boulud’s first West Coast operation. The restaurant is expected to open in late 2023 at the Mandarin Oriental Residences Beverly Hills, a new boutique condominium (the first to open in the neighborhood in a decade) offering 54 private residences, developed by luxury real estate investment and development firm Shvo.
The Café Boulud brand is named after the original Café Boulud, founded by Boulud’s great-grandparents on the family’s farm outside of Lyon, France. In honor of this heritage, Boulud focuses his menu on classic French dishes, seasonal specialties determined by the local market, vegetables and global flavors.
“I have been visiting Los Angeles for more than 30 years and have many fond memories from filming a TV series, After Hour, with chefs and restaurants across the city many years ago. I always teased Wolfgang [Puck] that if he...

Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar nominee Michelle Yeoh skipped the Super Bowl in favor of a private dinner prepared by Michelin-star chef Daniel Boulud and hosted by Mandarin Oriental Residences and real estate developer Michael Shvo on Feb. 12.
The actress, who jetted in from London for the weekend (and the Oscar nominees luncheon where she caught up with Tom Cruise), was on break from filming her role as Madame Morrible in the Jon Chu-directed big-screen adaptation of the musical Wicked. Of the much anticipated adaptation of the Broadway smash, she tells THR that the movie is going amazingly so far.
“Jon Chu has always been such an incredible filmmaker, and they were right to wait for the right time to find the right director,” she says before turning her attention to her co-stars, playing Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. “And with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, it’s like a dream.

Even the Super Bowl wasn’t going to keep this crowd away from celebrating Michelle Yeoh and her historic Oscar nomination as the first Asian woman with a nod in the best actress category.
On Sunday night — while the last quarter of the big game was still being played — around 100 guests arrived at the new Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills for a dinner in honor of the Everything Everywhere All at Once star.
Hosted by project developer Michael Shvo, chef Daniel Boulud and Mandarin Oriental, the night began with a cocktail party, where a large-screen TV had the game on.

This coming holiday season, many glasses raised in Hollywood may be filled with spiritless spirits. Stars are jumping into the nonalcoholic adult beverage market with their own brands; sales are up dramatically in the 395 million sector (rising 20.6 percent between August 2021 and August 2022, according to market research company NielsenIQ); and a growing list of celebs are speaking out about alcohol-free, sober and sober-curious lifestyles (Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Chrissy Teigen, Drew Barrymore and Kit Harington among them). Also driving demand is a pandemic-fueled societal focus on wellness.
“We are at the beginning of a new era of social drinking,” trumpets Christopher Lackner, co-founder of Jeng, a maker of CBD-infused, alcohol-free canned cocktails (including a Jeng & Tonic, and a Paloma). “Now that there are high-quality alternatives, it’s no longer difficult or awkward to be sober. In fact, it’s quite a treat.

With close to 365 days of flawless weather, outdoor dining is a year-round occurrence in Los Angeles, and even more so during a pandemic. And now that summer is officially here, there’s nothing like a lively patio, especially in the power-lunch centers of Beverly Hills and Century City, where the majority of talent agencies and entertainment law firms are perched.
Industry regulars say that patios throughout Century City and Beverly Hills are bustling these days. “As Beyoncé declares in her new single, ‘Break My Soul,’ we are ‘back outside’,” says Patrik-Ian Polk, co-executive producer of Starz’s P-Valley. “As convenient as Zoom meetings are, nothing beats the in-person L.A. business lunch circuit. It’s a vital part of the entertainment industry social scene that was sorely missed.” UTA partner Darnell Strom tells THR that he feels it’s harder to get a reservation “last second” right now in the area.

Five chefs remained in “Top Chef: Houston” for “We’re on a Boat” the last challenge before the finals: Damarr Brown, Evelyn Garcia, Buddha Lo, Nick Wallace, and comeback kid Sarah Welch. This would also be their last challenge in Houston before traveling to another culinary mecca: Tuscon, Arizona, as we learned at the end of the episode. As such, this week’s show bypassed the Quickfire Challenge and went straight to the main event.

As the title of the episode suggested, the chefs were out to sea to start their challenge. Tom Colicchio and “Top Chef” All-Star Dawn Burrell welcomed them onboard and explained their task: they were about to go fishing. It wasn’t just a pleasure cruise, though. Whatever they fished was going to determine what they had to cook with.

I’ve always thought I understood the arcane workings of the star system, but I still marvel at how cooks and bottle washers have achieved the star status of actors and musicians. Famous foodies are much in the news lately — Mario Batali, Gordon Ramsay, Wolfgang Puck and the late Anthony Bourdain — and the shows of star chefs sprawl across the TV landscape. “Misfits, free spirits and wanderers have created a new American profession,” heralds Andrew Friedman in his new book titled Chefs, Drugs and Rock & Roll, which is good summer reading.
Friedman writes colorfully about his cast of foodie miscreants, but I am left wondering whether we’re all falling victim to a feast of hype. I’m willing to pay a hefty tab at a top restaurant heralding a “name” chef, but still wonder how the egos, prices and sexual...

Outside of the big Oscar shindig in Los Angeles, there is only one official Academy Awards party on the night of the awards. This party is held at the ridiculously swanky uptown Manhattan restaurant Daniel, with noted chef Daniel Boulud whipping up a number of delicious delicacies for the members of the Academy who are East Coast bound (and willing to shell out a not insignificant amount of cash to watch the awards in a lovely dining room outfitted with large HD televisions). This party, while not as extravagant as the West Coast counterpart, might be just as fun. And last week in New York, we were able to taste a little bit of what the night has to offer.
At the tasting, a small group was joined by Boulud and Patrick Harrison, Program Director at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who explained that, after a delicious light breakfast (seriously,...

This story first appeared in the Sept. 13 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. The town’s new Four Seasons arrived complete with plenty of five-star luxuries: There’s a Daniel Boulud restaurant, noise-reducing cement walls for a hushed atmosphere and in-house hair and makeup teams — not to mention Beyonce, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake were all hotel guests while on tour. While The Oscars are, quite obviously, held on the sunny West Coast, there are still a bunch of Academy members who live on the East Coast who have voted in the awards and still totally like to party. Luckily for them, there is a lone, official Academy Awards shindig in New York City, and earlier this week we were treated to a preview of that party's menu. What made the truly delicious event even better was the fact that many of the menu items for the Oscar party, by celebrity chef Daniel Boulud, are inspired by the nominated films. (Sadly, "Zero Dark Berry" tart was not present.) The event was held at Chef Daniel's Upper East Side restaurant Daniel, a place so fancy that I was pretty sure the second I walked in someone would quietly remind me that the McDonald's with the unlocked bathroom is three blocks south. I'll say this for MasterChef: it certainly knows how to raise its fresh Wal-Mart stakes.
Rather than artificially escalating the team challenge by making the contestants prepare dozens of plates -- I half expected to see our top four aboard a viking warship this time -- MasterChef wisely eschews spectacle for substance this week, inviting three guest judges to share a table with Gordon, Graham and Joe.
These guests include Gordon's Parisian mentor Guy Savoy, New York icon Daniel Boulud, and the highly decorated Alain Ducasse. The judges are the only audience this week, ensuring that only the most skillful chefs survive.

Now that you've heard the news about Top Chef Canada's second season, you're probably wondering the same thing we are -- just who are these chefs?

Well, except for the East Coast, which will be sorely missed after Todd Perrin's inventiveness last year. Here's what the Huffington Post Canada found out about these 16 chefs who will be competing on Food Network Canada starting March 12.
Chef: Joel Aubie, 27, of Tofino, BC (originally from Bathurst, Nb)
Aubie currently works as the head chef at Shelter restaurant in Tofino, having worked his way up since its opening in 2007. As a restaurant on the edge of the coast's famous beach, he focuses on seafood, with an emphasis on local and organic ingredients. He might just find it a challenge cooking from Loblaws' shelves during the competition.
