Prominent Korean filmmakers and arts organizers will hold a media event in Seoul on Friday calling for an investigation by authorities into the circumstances that led to the passing of Parasite star Lee Sun-kyun, who died last month at age 48 of an apparent suicide.
Before his death, Lee had been under police investigation for several weeks over suspected illegal drug use, accusations he strenuously denied. The actor claimed that he was the victim of a blackmail plot and that if he had consumed drugs, it was because he had been tricked into doing so. South Korean police have said that Lee passed several drug tests and sat for lengthy sessions of questioning, including one marathon meeting days before his death that lasted 19 hours. His lawyers have told local media outlets that the actor was upset by the way police were handling the investigation and how details were being leaked to the press,...

In the 2018 Korean drama My Mister, Lee Sun-kyun stars as a man who seems to have it all — a stable career, the respect of his colleagues and a loving family — but is in actuality burdened by the pressures of providing for his loved ones and employees while navigating an extortion scheme and suspicions of a workplace affair. Beset with a melancholic disposition, at one point he stumbles on some train tracks and contemplates remaining there. It’s a fleeting thought but a poignant moment in the critically acclaimed series, which won best drama at the Baeksang Arts Awards and was a highlight in Lee’s notable career.
That Lee — one of Korea’s most popular actors who earned worldwide mainstream recognition through Parasite — would be involved in any sort of real-life scandal was nearly unthinkable. He had been married (to actress Jeon Hye-jin) almost as long as he’d been famous,...

However, she recently shattered royal protocol by boldly shaking up Queen Elizabeth’s one royal fashion rule. This led a commentator to exclaim, “Wow, Kate’s hot!”

Blackpink received quite the honor while visiting Buckingham Palace on Wednesday (November 22) in London!
The K-pop stars – Rosé, Jisoo, Jennie and Lisa – joined South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee as they met with King Charles at a special Investiture ceremony.
The ladies were awarded by the King as Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire for their roles as COP26 advocates for the COP26 Summit in Glasgow 2021.
While they all received the honors, Rosé‘s “Honorary” qualifier was left off as she has dual citizenship in New Zealand, which is one of the 14 realms under the British rule. Those who are non-uk citizens or members of the realms, receive honorary versions of the MBEs.
The day before, Blackpink dressed to the nines as they attended a state dinner ahead of the Investitures ceremony. Prince William and Princess Catherine were also in attendance at the dinner.

While Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has taken the global box office by storm and shattered numerous records — the film raced past the $1 billion mark in just over two weeks — it hasn’t connected with audiences in one major market, South Korea. Some observers cite cultural differences as the reason — especially the film’s feminist messaging.
According to the Korean Film Council, Barbie only managed an eighth-place finish at the box office in Korea over the Aug. 4-6 weekend, grossing $273,414, with only a 1.2 percent advance ticket sales rate, compared to 35.8 percent for the other half of the “Barbenheimer” juggernaut — Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer — which is set for release in South Korea on Aug. 15.
Barbie has sold 518,172 tickets since its July 19 release, according to the KFC (for a total gross of $3.8 million according to Box Office Mojo). That compares to 3.8 million tickets for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which opened a week earlier.

Seoul, May 11 (Ians) South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday declared an end to almost all Covid-19 restrictions, including mandatory isolation, effectively placing the disease in the endemic category.
Yoon said during a Covid-19 response meeting that the seven-day mandatory isolation period for infected patients will be reduced to a recommendation of five days, reports Yonhap News Agency.
He also said the indoor mask mandate will be lifted everywhere except for hospitals with rooms for hospitalization, and the Pcr test-upon-arrival recommendation will be removed.
The new measures will take effect June 1 when the national crisis level for Covid will be lowered from “serious” to “alert”.
“I am pleased that our people will reclaim their everyday lives after three years and four months,” Yoon said during the meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at the presidential office.

Earlier this week, President Joe Biden surprised absolutely no one when he announced on Wednesday that he’ll be running for reelection next year. Of course a big looming “if” hanging over this is the fact Biden is the oldest-ever president and he turns 82 in 2024. So of course on Thursday’s episode of NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” Jimmy Fallon had plenty of jokes about Biden, and his age.
But Fallon defended Biden, joking that Potus is “the same age as Lincoln… if he were still alive today.” The joke being that Biden was born in 1809.
First though, Fallon kicked things off with a look at this week’s state visit by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and the impressive impromptu performance of “American Pie” by Don McLean he gave at the White House. “There’s always that one friend at karaoke who knows they’re good, you know?...

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited Washington, D.C. this week, and while there had a chance to meet with Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos.

While the world has been riffing on BTS, “Squid Game” and “Parasite,” China has been busily keeping the Korean content wave at bay.
That may be about to change after Tencent Video this week began streaming “Hotel by the River,” a 2018 film from art-house director Hong Sang-soo about a poet meeting his estranged sons.
The move has caused some in the Korea entertainment industry to hail a “partial lifting” of China’s ban. And the president of Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol has already claimed some of the credit. Yoon met with China’s president Xi Jinping last week on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali.

South Korean defence minister says that it would be “difficult” to extend an alternate form of military service to BTS due to “aspects of fairness”.
Last month, Busan’s mayor asked South Korea’s president to exclude BTS from mandatory military service so they can help support the city’s bid to host the World Expo in 2030.
Park Heong-joon told president Yoon Suk-yeol that “without solving the military service issue, BTS actively promoting Busan’s bid for the Expo might be impossible”.
He told the president that the global event is a “dire necessity” for Busan.
Busan’s mayor said he was asking for an alternative “national responsibility as heavy as the mandatory military service” for the famous K-Pop band.

Seoul, Aug 17 (Ians) American billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates said on Wednesday he hopes to see “a more generous” South Korea in its global aid contribution to help address global health challenges and provide the right help to those in need in developing nations.
Gates, a co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said raising the aid budget is another important role South Korea can play as a rich country besides its brisk innovation in vaccine development.
“I’m very involved in encouraging rich countries to be more generous and to raise their aid budgets,” Gates said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency on the last day of his three-day trip to Seoul.
“You can’t do everything. Even in rich countries, there are some trade-offs that you don’t spend infinite amounts to intervene, but in poor countries, those trade-offs are quite brutal … so we should make sure everything goes to those high-impact interventions,...

Seoul, Aug 12 (Ians) Samsung’s Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was given a presidential pardon on Friday, in a move widely expected to help him consolidate his leadership and speed up business decision-making in the country’s biggest conglomerate.
The decision comes as the tech giant has been faced with intensifying global competition from smaller rivals, including those in China, and growing economic uncertainty from global inflation, monetary tightening and worries over an economic slowdown.
Earlier in the day, President Yoon Suk-yeol approved his first special pardons for Lee, Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin and 1,691 others on the occasion of the Aug. 15 Liberation Day anniversary. Yoon said the pardon was expected to help the country “overcome the economic crisis.”
Samsung heir Lee was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison in a bribery case involving former President Park Geun-hye and released on parole in August last year. His prison term officially ended July...

The most prominent beneficiary is Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee, the report said.
“I will work hard for the national economy,” Lee told reporters in front of the Seoul Central District Court upon the pardon announcement.

“Broker,” the art house drama film that appeared in competition in Cannes last month had a bright start in Korean cinemas, picking up over 6 million in its opening foray. Its score, however, was not enough to unseat mainstream crime actioner “The Roundup” from the weekend’s top spot.
“Broker” earned 4.13 million over the Friday to Sunday weekend, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That put it second behind “The Roundup” with a weekend score of 6.69 million.
Backed and released by Cj Entertainment, “Broker” enjoyed a wide release on some 1,500 screens and claimed top spot on its Wednesday opening. Over five days it earned a total of 6.03 million.
The film’s successes appear to have been noted at the highest level of society. It was reported that newly installed Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol on Sunday had dinner with “Broker” star, and Cannes best actor prize-winner,...
