X-Men comics have always been about the future. They are, after all, stories about mutants, the next stage in human evolution. The central tension dividing Professor Charles Xavier and his best friend Magneto is how to go into that future, either working with humanity or ruling them.
X-Men comics have also always been very, very confusing, with their frequent tales of clones, shape-changers, and alternate realities.
Given those two facts, it’s no wonder that X-Men creators would embrace time travel as a storytelling conceit, throwing Marvel’s Merry Band of Mutants far into the future or launching them deep into the past. The results vary, but these fifteen tales represent the best, and sometimes most headache inducing, of the X-Men’s adventures across time.

The 1990 crossover Days of Future Present is only half an X-Men story, as Franklin Richards is the main character.

This Batman article contains spoilers.
Joker continuity is a bit messy by design. Ever since the Clown Prince of Crime declared that he “preferred multiple choice” in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s seminal 1988 comic Batman: The Killing Joke, it’s been very tough to nail down just what is true and what isn’t about the villain’s origin story. Was the Joker once a failed comedian who went mad after criminals murdered his family and he fell into a vat of chemicals? Maybe. Or was he originally a crime boss known as the Red Hood? Is his real name actually Jack?
Multiple choice has mostly worked well for the Joker, who is meant to be Gotham’s embodiment of true evil. The fact that his story is indecipherable and ultimately unknowable makes him that much scarier of a threat for Batman. But things are getting a little too convoluted now.

Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is once again heeding the call of the Bat-Signal.
Tomlin is reteaming with Matt Reeves to write The Batman 2, the follow-up to Reeves’ well-received Robert Pattinson-starring take on the Caped Crusader that proved to be a hit with audiences.
Plot details are being kept in the Batcave. It is not even clear whether the sequel will feature the Joker, Batman’s classic nemesis teased in the closing moments of Reeves’ movie and portrayed by Barry Keoghan. The news comes as Reeves signs a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Tomlin worked on The Batman, coming in during the development when third-act issues arose, although he did not receive screenwriting credit — which Reeves shared with Peter Craig. This time around, Tomlin is coming in on the ground floor.

One of the big questions we’re always asked whenever there’s a new superhero movie is what comics should someone who only knows a character from TV or movies check out. Sometimes this question is easier to answer than other times, but with The Batman, it’s an incredibly easy answer. Batman: The Imposter, which is now available in hardcover from DC Comics, reads like a direct sequel to the new movie. It isn’t one, to be clear, but if all you know about the character and his world is what you just saw on the screen? Then The Imposter is a perfect next step.
There’s a good reason for that. Batman: The Imposter is written by Mattson Tomlin, who is an uncredited writer on The Batman screenplay. The Imposter takes place in year three of Batman’s career, in a very grounded Gotham City, and features...

When it comes to comic books, the natural thought most of us have is that of costumed heroes and villains with otherworldly superpowers. No matter where you go for your entertainment—be it movies, television, or video games—it won't take long to come across any of the characters we've all come to know from the "Big 2" Publishers.
While superheroes may be the bread and butter of the industry, what about the other stories of comics? Ones that are on the darker, spookier side of lore?
Horror in comics is hardly a new concept, dating back as far as the beginning of the Golden Age of the 1940s and ’50s. At that time, most were adaptations of popular fiction works such as Eerie Comics' New Adventures of Frankenstein and Classic Comics' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The genre really found its footing when EC Comics introduced the world to what...

Now that comic books have been around as long as they have, and we are coming up to the one hundredth year anniversary of the American comic book industry in the not too distant future, literally tens of thousands of characters have been created to date. When DC Comics announced their Black Label offshoot many though it would be a replacement for the Vertigo line, telling all-new stories and creating all-new characters and universes. But in the end it turned out to be something more interesting – a place where writers could explore the familar characters of DC’s stable in new and intersting ways. Sort of an “Elseworlds” universe, only one where writers were free to target a more mature audience and tell more adult stories in a premium format… And it’s turned out to be something of a huge success; right from the get-go with the controversial Batman Damned and it’s bat-dong, to the likes of Superman: Year One and Harleen – a look at the Joker’s sidekick-come-love interest.

The Eisner-bait comic, Strange Adventures, gets a new DC label to match its content.
Strange Adventures, the comic so hotly anticipated that DC is already making a show about it before it comes out, is in for some changes. The book, written by Tom King, with art from Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner and letters from Clayton Cowles, is being upgraded from a regular DC comic to the company's prestige mature readers format, Black Label.
"As Strange Adventures was coming together, we had to take a step back and look at what made the most sense for the project," said the project's editor, Jamie S. Rich. "Since its tone and themes are more in the vein of Mister Miracle than, say, Tom King’s work on Batman, we decided that it made more sense to give Strange Adventures its own space, where Tom, Mitch, Doc, and Clayton...

Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz take The Question back to Hub City, then back to the Old West, then to the Depression...
Denys Cowan is a living legend. He pencilled the original run of The Question with Dennis O’Neill, laying the groundwork for that character to become a fan favorite for three decades. He co-founded Milestone Media and gave the world Static and Hardware and all the other characters that make you shout in delight when they show up on Young Justice. Hell, he even drew the album art for Joe Biden’s favorite Wu Tang record.
Bill Sienkiewicz is also a living legend. He just dropped an art retrospective covering a portion of his work as the primary artist on books like Elektra: Assassin and New Mutants and Stray Toasters. But beyond his work as the primary artist on all-time classics, he’s also one of...

Andrea Sorrentino was already incredible, but he brings it to a new level on Joker: Killer Smile with Jeff Lemire.
I feel like everyone has a Jack Kirby. Every artist working at a consistent, Big 2-level in comics, when asked to contribute something that looks like Jack Kirby art, can submit a piece that looks similar to what the King did, even if only two or three people can make something that could plausibly pass as Kirby art (for the record: Walt Simonson and Keith Giffen Omac does the trick). Andrea Sorrentino, the artist on Joker: Killer Smile, did it himself on Legion of Super-Heroes: Millenium. His Kamandi story was up to his typical high standards for art, but it was also really surprising in how much Kirby there was in it. And while it's not especially surprising that he can do a great Kirby impression, it...

Director James Wan, known for Aquaman, Saw, and the Conjuring and Insidious films, is now set to take on another comic story. This time he is headed for the TV in a series based on the comic Gideon Falls, by writer Jeff Lemire, and artist Andrea Sorrentino. Here’s a rundown of the comic and what the series will entail:
The lives of a reclusive young man obsessed with a conspiracy in the city’s trash, and a washed-up Catholic priest arriving in a small town full of dark secrets, become intertwined around the mysterious legend of The Black Barn, an otherworldly building that is alleged to have appeared in both the city and the small town, throughout history, bringing death and madness in its wake. Rural mystery and urban horror collide in this character-driven meditation on obsession, mental illness, and faith.

Let’s get this out of the way right now. This list is wrong. Although I try to be as objective as possible when putting it together there is no way to make it completely void of my subjective opinion. So why do this? For one I enjoy doing it as it pushes me to read comics I would not normally read. The biggest reason is that my favorite thing is to recommend comics and this allows me to do just that. Lastly, I hope it shows just how varied comics can be and the amazing content there is each year.
The other part of this is the criteria used to create this list. Comics provide a unique challenge in end of year list creation due to the many different formats they are released. You have straight graphic novels that are self-contained stories, ongoing monthly titles, one shot, mini-series, webcomics,...

Marvel Comics seems to like exploring the “Old Man” versions of certain characters. Old Man Logan was a great comic series and the Old Man Hawkeye series is going to conclude next month. Next up on docket is Old Man Quill and Marvel has released the first piece of cover art for the series featuring a much older version of the character.
We also have some additional details on the story that you can read below:
The comic is being written by Old Man Hawkeye writer Ethan Sacks and it sounds like it’s going to tell a compelling story that fans will love. While talking to Newsarama, Sacks talked about working on Old Man Quill and teases what’s in store for fans:

Hivemind announced Thursday that it has acquired the rights to “Gideon Falls,” an Image Comics horror title that will be made into an hour-long TV series.
Written by Jeff Lemire & Andrea Sorrentino — who recently worked on DC’s “Green Arrow” and Marvel’s “Old Man Logan” relaunches — “Gideon Falls” follows three strangers in the titular small town: a washed-up Catholic priest, a determined female sheriff, and a conspiracy-obsessed recluse. Though the three have nothing in common, they are brought together as they discover that a forgotten local legend may have more truth than it first appears.
Created earlier this year, the genre-oriented Hivemind’s other titles include Amazon’s “The Expanse” as well as upcoming titles like Netflix’s adaptation of the video game “The Witcher” and the feature film adaptation of the classic children’s horror series “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”

Marvel's "Secret Empire", now available is written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino, Daniel Acuña, and Leinil Francis Yu, with a cover by Mark Brooks, as 'Steve Rogers' aka 'Captain America' brings about a 'Hydra' revolution during "...the worst day in the 'Marvel Universe'...":
"His plans and Hydra's plans will have begun to unfurl," said Marvel about the story. "We are done with the covert portion, the buildup portion of the program. 'Secret Empire' is the pyrotechnics, the big Michael Bay blockbuster, with huge colossal struggles and battles across the 'Marvel Universe', with all of our key characters and players taking on a big role. 'Cap', as head of 'S.H.I.E.L.D.', is able to mobilize forces..."
"We'll definitely see an impact on our new, younger generation of heroes, a huge turn for them, a 'Watergate' moment for them.

It’s that time of the month again to go through all comics laced with more than a hint of adamantium. This month I will bring you up to speed on the previous three issues of Weapon X, All New Wolverine #20-#21 and then review the first issue from the new creative team on Old Man Logan #25. Before I get into the reviews I must apologise for not giving proper credits for the books I reviewed last month, so that will be rectified from here on in.
Weapon X #2-#4
Writer: Greg Pak | Artist: Greg Land/Ibraim Roberson | Inks: Jay Leisten | Colours: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Joe Caramagna
The second and third issues of this series have a certain feel of the writer following a paint by numbers. That being said I am enjoying the series thus far, but because of the characters involved and the concept of Weapon X always appeals to me.

If anything, September will be an important month for Marvel because, if all goes according to plan, they’ll be just about ready to put their currently in progress crossover event, Secret Empire, behind them and poised to move forward with whatever their next major initiative may be. And while we haven’t been in contact with any flies on the walls over at the House of Ideas, we’re pretty sure the Marvel Legacy one-shot is the vanguard.
First, let’s talk a bit about Secret Empire because that seems like the logical thing to do. Not long ago, it was revealed that a tenth issue would be added to the limited series, something not unheard of when it comes to major events – especially those from Marvel. And although this would seem like a definitive end to the story, there where rumors swirling that an eleventh wasn’t out of the question.
From what we can tell, that’s not going to happen, but an epilogue of sorts in Secret Empire Omega #1 has been announced. Upon examining the solicitation below, it quickly becomes apparent that this will likely be an essential read given that it retains the very same creative team that worked on the mainline series itself.

Secret Empire Aftermath!
• Hydra has fallen, but the world is still not secure! As the heroes of the Marvel Universe stir from the wreckage of the battlefield, the inevitable rebuilding must begin.
• However, one question hangs in the air over the proceedings: What redemption can there be for Captain America?
40 Pgs./Rated T+ …$4.99
Should that meet its targeted September release – which may be a feat, especially when you consider that Secret Empire #6 has been delayed until July 19 – that’ll smoothly transition into the all important Marvel Legacy #1 (solicitation below). So, if the publisher does allow it to ship before Secret Empire concludes, we can only hope that it doesn’t completely spoil the crossover’s ending. But, then again, let’s not forget this is the same lot that released Who Will Wield The Shield? before Captain America: Reborn wrapped.

Welcome to the first instalment of Wolverine Wednesday. Your monthly guide through the world of Wolverine based comics. My main focus will be on the solo adventures of Logan and Laura but I will drop in reviews of other trade paperbacks, mini series and one shots related to the Logan family tree. Kicking things off this month I will get you up to speed on Old Man Logan before a new creative team takes charge with #25. I’ll also be talking the jump on friendly events of All-New Wolverine #19 and the beginning of the new Weapon X ongoing.
Old Man Logan: The story so far…
With the events of the event Secret Wars coming to an end in 2016 timelines and realities in the Marvel Universe were drastically altered. It served as an opening to bring everyone’s favourite alternate version of Wolverine into current continuity. Over the course of their...

When Secret Empire #0 debuted I was amazed by how much was packed into the first issue. Typically zero issues are nothing more than recaps, but Secret Empire did not follow that trend and moved at a break neck spread with a tremendous amount of standout moments. Nick Spencer built a foundation to tell a great story, and when time jumped even further in issue one it appeared this series would not get as bogged down as other event titles. Since that time jump however the majority of narrative has been spent playing catchup. Once gain we have another event where there is a lot going on but nothing really is happening.
Part of the problem is how rapidly the scope has expanded in these last two issues. Now we have Black Widow and The Champions training to take down Steve Rogers,...

Well, it looks like you’ll have to wait slightly longer before getting your hands on one of those glow in the dark Cosmic Cubes because the Secret Empire shipping schedule has been slightly amended. You see, the sixth issue to make up Marvel’s currently unfolding major event has undergone some changes, which we’ll get into right now.
The first we’ll discuss is that of a higher page count, which will, of course, increase the price point of the issue in question. Having inflated from 40 pages to 48, expect to pay $4.99 as opposed to $3.99 for this baby when it hits stands. Sure, one dollar doesn’t seem like much, but comic book collectors often pick up more than one title each week and, believe me, it adds up quickly. As such, some True Believers are already expressing their displeasure with the decision and have also accused those behind...

For all the hype and excitement surrounding Secret Empire – not to mention a good degree of controversy – this issue has an unmistakable sense of being filler. Nick Spencer is enjoying exploring the Hydra-controlled world that he’s created, and I understand that he’s trying to make it all feel a little bit more real. He wants to explore the sense of hopelessness and despair that’s attendant in such a fascist-controlled world. At the same time, though, that makes for a slow-moving event comic.
This issue is all about moving the pieces into place. On the one hand, you have Black Widow preparing to launch an assassination attempt on Steve Rogers. On the other hand, you have Hawkeye leading a team in pursuit of the Cosmic Cube. Meanwhile, Steve Rogers himself pursues the Cosmic Cube relentlessly.

Let’s face it, Secret Empire is easily the most controversial event comic in years. And this, I think, is the issue that really turns the story upside down.
It really does look as though writer Nick Spencer has been pulling a bait-and-switch all along. There’s a twist at the end of the issue that’s simply breathtaking. Now, I’m not going to spoil it for you, as the twist really is a moment that, I think, will come to define the entire event. In fact, I reckon Secret Empire #2 will force us to reinterpret the last year’s worth of Marvel comics. That’s how big this twist really is.
Overall, this is a fascinating issue, and again, I can see why Nick Spencer claimed to be inspired by Star Wars. The attack...

"...years after 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', the last of the 'X-Men merry mutants', including an aging 'Logan' aka 'Wolverine', whose healing factor is starting to fail and 'Charles Xavier' aka 'Professor X', protect a young girl named 'Laura' who is being hunted by sinister forces..."

Set fifty years into the future, it uses a similar premise to another Millar book,...
