This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
“I need the X-Men!” declares a frightened and bruised Jean Grey at the end of the X-Men ’97 two-episode premiere before passing out in front of the team. An injured Jean is distressing enough, but add to that the fact that this Jean Grey is not the Jean Grey we’ve been following for the first two episodes. It’s a second one, while the first is standing by Cyclops, watching this doppelganger in shock. For casual viewers, this cliffhanger may require an X-plainer.
When we catch up with the team at the start of the first episode of X-Men ’97, Marvel’s animated revival of the hit 90s cartoon series, a pregnant Jean contemplates leaving the team with Cyclops, where the couple can raise their son together. But that decision is delayed when Magneto shows up to honor Charles Xavier’s will and take over the mutant team.

If you keep up with superhero movies, you probably know how Marvel Studios started as an underdog and became a behemoth. The omnipresent Cinematic Universe all started with 2008's "Iron Man," which was far from a guaranteed hit; the title character was a B-list comic star at best, and comeback vehicles (like this was for Robert Downey Jr.) can be anything but.
According to the recent behind-the-scenes book "MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios" by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, even the film's writers didn't initially know if it would work. Their concerns went back to the source material. The most famous "Iron Man" comic was and is "Demon in a Bottle", about Tony Stark succumbing to and then beating alcoholism.
During the Bronze Age of Comics (the 1970s), superhero stories gestured to social relevance. "The Reign of Marvel Studios" says that writers weren't keen on such a premise being a blockbuster hit,...

Welcome to Sales to Astonish, a new column in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us news on comic sales and the general moves in the comic market over the past month or so!
There was an expectation when I entered the realm of online retail that being open and having product available 24 hours a day would mean that sales would take place almost anytime. On the cusp of my third anniversary selling comics, graphic novels and Roleplaying games predominantly as an online retailer it’s fair to say that the majority of my sales occur during normal retail trading hours with the exception of a few night owls who buy between 10pm and midnight (does this coincide with the finishing of a shift?). Comic book fans got a surprise in September when reports confirmed that the Don Cheadle-led series "Armor Wars" wouldn't be a Disney+ series after all, but a full-length Marvel movie. In a franchise that's known for having a rock-solid plan years ahead of time, the change to a project that was already in development may have felt like a sign that cracks were appearing in the Marvel Studios machine. But longtime Marvel producer Nate Moore recently visited the podcast "The Town with Matthew Belloni," and revealed that the reason for the format switch-up is actually a good thing: the story just needed a bigger budget (via Games Radar).
"There were some great ideas that were coming out for that show, but that to be quite honest felt too big for that show," Moore shared, before clarifying that he meant "too big" in terms of both budget and concept. "Armor Wars...

Marvel’s “Armor Wars,” originally planned as a TV series for Disney+, is being redeveloped as a feature film, Variety has learned.
“Armor Wars” will star Don Cheadle, reprising his MCU role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine. The project is based on Marvel Comics’ seven-issue arc of the same name within the story of Iron Man, and follows Rhodes as he must face what happens when Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands.
Yassir Lester, who was originally set as the series’ head writer, remains attached to write the project.
This is Marvel’s second big shake-up of the week. “Blade” director Bassam Tariq stepped away from the project on Tuesday, just two months before the film was set to begin production, signaling a potential delay from the originally set Nov. 2023 premiere date. However, “Armor Wars” won’t slide into that date — it’s...

Deadline has confirmed that Marvel’s six-episode Disney series Armor Wars series will now be morphed into a movie.
Don Cheadle is expected to reprise his role as War Machine, aka Colonel James Rhodes. Yassir Lester, who was on board for the series, will continue on with writing the movie.
The series was first announced during Disney Investor Day in December 2020.
There is no director attached at this time, and no word when the movie will be released in the 2023-2025 Marvel Cinematic Universe continuum.
The “Armor Wars” storyline ran through Iron Man (Vol. 1) #225 (December 1987) to #231 (June 1988), written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton with art by Mark Bright. In the series, also dubbed “The Stark Wars,” Iron Man encounters the Spymaster, who steals the Stark technology. Iron Man also comes up against Force, which sets up the plot of “Armor Wars” in the following issues.

Marvel Studios has shaken up its Armor Wars project, and now what was to have been a series for Disney+ will be redeveloped as a feature film.
The move essentially pushes back the title further down the development slate.
Sources say the studio was committed in getting the story told the right way and in that process realized that a feature was better suited for the project. Like all Marvel movies, it is intended for a theatrical release.
Don Cheadle, who is reprising his longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Aka War Machine, remains on board to star. Yassir Lester, who was acting as head writer on the series, will remain as its feature scribe.
Marvel had been eyeing a 2023 start of production on the series, but the few people who were gearing up for that were notified Thursday of the change of direction.

Tom King and Clay Mann’s Batman/Catwoman kicked off its complex thread of mysteries earlier this month. In the present, the Bat and the Cat set out to search for Andrea Beaumont’s missing son, while an older Selina Kyle pays a friend a visit in the future, with the first issue concluding with the return of killer vigilante the Phantasm.
It’s hard to say just where these threads are going after just one issue, but we do know that at least one new character from Bruce and Selina’s future and DC Comics’ past is set to play a major role in this story. As revealed by King and Mann on Twitter, Helena Wayne, the daughter first teased in King and Lee Weeks’ amazing Batman Annual #2 (2017), will don the cape and cowl in the maxi-series.

If you take a look at the first wave of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows coming to Disney+ you can trace a direct line to the core Avengers team. January’s WandaVision focuses on Vision and Scarlet Witch. March’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier plays in the same superspy corner of the McU that Black Widow does while continuing the Captain America legacy. Hawkeye will feature Clint Barton training his replacement and will be the most street level McU look since Daredevil was unceremoniously canceled. Loki is Thor’s brother, for cryin’ out loud. And She-Hulk, well…you get the picture.
Each of these shows is devoted to either furthering the legacy of particular Avengers, or fleshing out and exploring specific corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But there’s one corner of the McU that has remained unexplored, and it’s the one that started it all: Iron Man.

Marvel’s new Iron Man series looks set to be a kind of soft reboot for the character. The book follows in the wake of Iron Man 2020, a tale featuring Arno Stark (Tony’s adoptive brother) seizing the mantle and Tony at the forefront of a synthetic life revolution. After that, writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Cafu seem determined to bring him back to basics, showing Stark doing hands-on superhero work and fewer stories about him being a global celebrity.
All of this comes with a new suit, too. Designed by comics legend Alex Ross, this pulls back from the tech-focused sharp lines of Adi Granov and the McU designs and goes for something that’ll be familiar to longtime fans of the character.

Sometimes it’s crazy to look at what a mythic character Tony Stark has become. For decades, he was the Avengers member who was well-known enough, but couldn’t make it big in the mainstream. He had a cartoon with a cheesy theme in the ‘60s, a cartoon with a badass theme in the ‘90s, a quick reference on Seinfeld, and a few appearances in some awful straight-to-dvd animated movies that nobody ever talks about.
Then 2008 and Robert Downey Jr. happened and with it came Disney’s ability to print money like nothing else with dozens of successful movies. Even with Iron Man written out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point, he’s still considered the heart of what made it work.
Meanwhile, in the comics, Iron Man has hit some major highs. Not only a founding Avenger, founding member of Marvel’s Illuminati, and once Director of Shield,...

As I watched the latest trailer for the latest Vin Diesel-starring super-powered action-adventure, I began humming "Bette Davis Eyes" to myself. It's always a pleasure to see Guy Pierce on screen; he's certain to bring a measured humanity to his role as a scientist who brings dead people back to life so they can kill people for a shadowy agency. And Vin Diesel is (seriously) always a treat to watch as a mucho macho dude who begins to suspect something is amiss, especially when he says something like, "something's not right." The screenplay credits include both Eric Heisserer and Jeff Wadlow, so I'm positive they did everything they could, within their vivid, occasionally colliding imaginations, to translate the comic book by Bob Layton, Don Perlin,...

Vin Diesel action vehicle Bloodshot has unveiled its first trailer, and what better way to start the week? Sure - another day, another comic book movie, but this one has a little Tony Scott-ness to it, so we're going to give it an easy pass.
The directorial debut of Dave Wilson, who was in charge of the visual effects on Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Bloodshot stars Diesel as resurrected supersoldier Raymond Garrison, who has the ability to both shapeshift and heal very quickly, and who becomes a pawn in a deadly game. This is supposed to be the start of a Valiant Entertainment comic book universe, but follow-up project Harbinger has since moved to Paramount, so we'll see. Last month, Instagram user Ultraraw26 posted some pretty sweet Avengers 4 fan art featuring Captain Marvel and Iron Man fighting side by side. Now, they’ve followed that piece up with another image depicting the same pair of Marvel heroes, albeit under much gloomier circumstances.
This time, we have newcomer Carol Danvers cradling the body of a presumably lifeless Tony Stark. In the background, meanwhile, we see the hulking figure of Thanos as he walks away, his enemy slain. Not exactly a cheery picture then, and what’s more, this isn’t even the first time Ultraraw26 has presented us with a death scenario for the Phase 1 Avenger, with a similarly morose piece from a few days ago showing Stark dying in the company of Peter Parker instead.

While we still have a lot to learn regarding next year’s Avengers 4, one thing that half the internet seems pretty confident about already is that Tony Stark will be meeting his demise in the Avengers: Infinity War sequel, with even Iron Man comic book writer Bob Layton recently predicting that Marvel may take this tragic route.
But when a theory is this prevalent amongst the fandom, you have to wonder if the studio has another trick up its sleeve. With this in mind, a post on Reddit is not only predicting that Stark won’t die in the upcoming film, but also argues that it would make for a more appropriate conclusion to the character’s arc if the man beneath the armor lived to see another day.
It’s often part of the Stark death prediction that his end will come in the form of a knowing sacrifice...

Knowing how superheroes dominate the box office and television airwaves these days, you’d think comic books would be flying off shelves – but that unfortunately isn’t the case. In an era when Black Panther – a character previously unknown to the mainstream at large, mind you – can’t translate a highly successful theatrical run into periodical sales, it may be safe to assume that not as many people care to read anymore.
Speaking of which, I’ve noticed how each successive generation enjoys sitting down with a good book even less. As such, bookstores are closing left and right, in addition to magazine racks growing smaller with each passing year. To quote Egan Spangler in Ghostbusters, “print is dead.”
Still, there are those of us unwilling to give up on the comic book industry, myself included. Even so, famed writer and author/artist of the classic Iron Man: Demon in...

Having seen the twentieth instalment soar beyond the $2 billion plateau, and push the McU to nearly $17 billion earned at the global box office, it’s easy to forget the humble beginnings of the highest grossing film franchise of all-time. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating, if only slightly. After all, Iron Man was built upon a production budget of $140 million, but when compared to the $400 million it cost to make Avengers: Infinity War, the “big man in a suit of armour” was dealt mere peanuts.
Speaking of Infinity War, I’m just as surprised as you are that, essentially, only the Og Avengers survived. And apparently, so is famed Marvel comic book writer Bob Layton.
During a sit-down with the Tampa Bay Times, the man behind villain Justin Hammer – portrayed by Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2 – and James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, was asked if Avengers 4 will be...

[Note: Major spoilers ahead for “Ant-Man and The Wasp. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the movie, we recommend not reading further.]
One of the great standouts of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is the mysterious Ghost, (played excellently by Hannah John-Kamen), a masked, sci-fi-suited fighter who can become intangible — meaning she can pass through walls, go invisible, and so on — and who makes life hell for our heroes. But much like her “quantum phasing” abilities, not everything is as it seems.
We later learn she’s a young woman named Ava Starr, who got her powers as a child after she was exposed to a failed attempt to recreate the technology that makes Ant-Man and the Wasp possible. Now those same powers are killing her, and her seemingly villainous actions stem from her quest to find a cure before its too late.
All of that is wildly different from her comic book counterpart. Though the...

Hannah John-Kamen is a star on the rise.

It’s a totally new take on the classic character, too, given Bob Layton’s creation was originally introduced to comic book readers as a male antagonist capable of giving Iron Man a run for his money in the tech department. Deadpool 2 introduces a character who hasn't seen the spotlight in nearly a quarter of a century.
Russell "Rusty" Collins (aka Firefist) first appeared in the comic X-Factor #1 created by Bob Layton and Jackson Guice in 1986, and last appeared in X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997). During that period, Marvel depicted Russell as a trim, fair-skinned blond born in Tulsa, Ok, raised under his uncle's care. At 16, he joins the Us Navy and learns of his mutant abilities when he quite literally becomes fired up over an attractive woman who he ultimately burns to death. The authorities attempt to arrest him, but he sets the officers ablaze and escapes.
The plot of Deadpool 2 throws that entire background aside in favor of introducing us to an olive-skinned, foul-mouthed orphan from New Zealand with a body-positive attitude (Julian Dennison). The only thing that the movie version of...

Since his involvement was announced, there’s been a fair amount of secrecy surrounding and speculation regarding who, exactly, Julian Dennison, star of Hunt for the Wilderpeople, will be playing in the upcoming Deadpool 2.
Fan theories have the young New Zealander portraying a variation of Hope Summers, Kid Apocalypse or Firefist, on account of his pyrokinetic abilities. Now, however, thanks to a brand new trailer denoting that advance tickets for the pic will go on sale this Thursday, there’s been a significant break in the case.
At one moment in the teaser, Wade Wilson, the titular foul-mouthed mercenary portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, refers to Dennison’s character as Russell. Now, assuming that the film will take characters directly from the comic books, which they’ve been doing for a majority of the roles thus far, the Russell in question is…drumroll please, Firefist, Aka Russell Collins.

Could Vin Diesel be the one to spearhead Sony’s fledgling Valiant universe?
That’s the latest comic book-related rumor doing the rounds online, with The Wrap claiming that Diesel has now entered talks to star in Bloodshot, presumably at the expense of Jared Leto.
The Suicide Squad and Blade Runner 2049 star was originally linked with the long-gestating project six months ago, during which time the likes of Oscar Isaac (The Last Jedi) and James McAvoy (X-Men: Dark Phoenix) were seemingly in contention, too.
Fast forward to now, and it seems Sony has whittled down its list of potential super-soldiers to only one – Vin Diesel. Should a deal place, the Fast and Furious veteran will help launch a five-film series based on popular Valiant comics in the vein of “Harbinger” and “Bloodshot,” and we understand the latter adaptation will be angled as an R-rated feature in the spirit of Logan and Deadpool.

Here's a cool bit of movie trivia that you've never heard before. Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero almost directed the very first Marvel movie back in the early 1980s. That film would have centered on the character Copperhead.
The big reveal comes from a clip from an upcoming documentary series called Untold Horror, which focuses on the film projects that the great horror movie director "almost" made. The clip focuses on how this Copperhead film project almost came about and it offers all in-depth details.
Romero explains that he was looking to make a film that was pretty much Transformers meets RoboCop before those two things were even a thing. Concept artist Bob Layton went on to give us a better idea of what the director was planning:
“It was a post-apocalyptic world… populated by cyborgs, ninjas, mad scientists… this movie had everything. At one point...

If you haven’t been paying attention to the Marvel comic world lately, Steve Rogers has been, well, less than a good guy. He’s been acting a lot like the thing he swore to battle than the symbol of freedom. He tricked all the other heroes into either being locked out of planet earth without the key, or inside of New York City without a key, or just running in fear. But it looks like the cap who stands for the right is returning to his anti-Hydra days.
I have been a huge fan of Secret Empire and the story they’ve been able to tell with a kind of what if scenario come to life, of the Cap turning bad. Not totally evil, but just aligned to a different goal. It has been a great series that has a lot of commentary on current times. Even the moment...

Synopsis: When armors collide! Trapped in the time-lost land of King Arthur, Iron Man battles Doctor Doom in a classic clash of titans! Found in Iron Man #149-150.
My Background:
Although I have not read a lot of classic Iron Man comics I did grow up a big fan of the character. During the 90’s I remember waking up early on Sunday mornings prior to going to church in order to watch The Marvel Action Hour. Not only was it my first introduction to Iron Man and Fantastic Four, but it was also my first exposure to this strange energetic man named Stan Lee.
That cartoon also impacted my first love at the time which were action figures. I collected so many of the Iron Man figures and still have many to this day. On...

Valiant Comics' signature super-soldier, Bloodshot, is coming to the big screen, played by Vin Diesel.
Bloodshot is set to arrive in 2020 as the first feature film adaptation of Valiant Comics, brandishing a headliner in Vin Diesel, who stars as the eponymous nanite-powered super-soldier.
Sony Pictures partnered with the publisher with clear designs for Bloodshot to launch a Valiant Cinematic Universe alongside film projects such as Harbinger and Archer & Armstrong as well as a Quantum & Woody TV series (with the Russo Bros. involved). However, the studio’s dream of harvesting its own shared continuity became mired in doubt back in September after Paramount acquired the rights to Harbinger, a crucial title filled with key characters and concepts in the Valiant lineup, analogous to Marvel’s X-Men IP.
Dave Wilson directed Bloodshot, transitioning from work as a visual effects artist on Avengers: Age of Ultron and an array of video games.

DC. Marvel. Industry giants, yet not the only names in comics. Not by a long shot.
Valiant is one such company that has been around for quite a while, founded in 1989 by former Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Jim Shooter and Steven Massarsky. Like the two industry leaders, we have the Valiant Universe including such titles as X-o Manowar, Harbinger, and Shadowman. Valiant already has a five-picture deal with Sony to bring the Valiant Universe to life, including movie versions of Bloodshot and Harbinger, leading to an Avengers style event in Harbinger Wars.
Heat Vision has learned that now that Valiant is developing Archer & Armstrong in house before being shopped around to studios. The project certainly won't be a hard sell, considering the talent that just joined the film.
Archer & Armstrong has already secured Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) to direct a script from Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise). Rossio is also...
