After studying Animation at the prestigious West Surrey College of Art and Design, Mark Waring began his professional career at the animation company Filmfair in the early 1990′s. Here he quickly rose through the ranks to become Lead Animator and then Director on many of their stop-frame children’s series and specials. A period of freelance Directing and Animating work gained the attention of London commercials orientated production houses, and lead to Mark being signed to the directors roster of, among others, Bermuda Shorts and Tandem Films. Through these production companies Mark directed and animated on various commercials, promos and short films with such clients as General Motors, Wrigley’s and MacDonald’s. Here's a couple of images from the new Frankenweenie short film called Captain Sparky Vs. the Flying Saucers. As you saw in the film, young Victor wants to be a filmmaker, so this is kind of a movie within a movie, it's a film Victor would have made if he was real. The short will be a part of the special features on Frankenweenie‘s Blu-ray/DVD release. The story focuses on Sparky’s attempts to save the world from an alien invasion.
The short was directed by Frankenweenie animation supervisor Mark Waring, and written by Frankenweenie co-producer Derek Frey. Waring talks about the film in an interview with USA Today saying,
In the short, there are a few sections of (Victor) trying to very early use stop-frame technique. The whole thing's stop-frame, so how do you make it look more stop-frame than it actually is.
The key was to...

Frankenweenie is out on DVD January 8 and features some neat new extras including a look behind-the-scenes at the set and props used in filming and an all-new original short, Captain Sparky vs. the Flying Saucers which has Sparky recruited into duty when an alien spacecraft begins attacking Earth. Like the Sparkysaurus short in Frankenweenie, it’s a movie-within-a-movie that references '50s sci-fi movies and Burton’s experience making Super 8 films.
USA Today spoke to Captain Sparky’s Animation Supervisor Mark Waring who dished more details on the extra.
“While Burton was filming the animated Frankenweenie, there was talk of doing more of Victor's little Diy Super 8 films,” Mark Waring said. ‘Quite a lot of people, especially on the crew, had done that themselves.’
… Waring's team was also happy to work with Sparky again after putting in the time to make the animated pet feel real on screen,...
