The tight-knit crew at Ktla got some more tough news this week with the revelation that the station’s longtime weatherman, Mark Kriski, has suffered a mild stroke. The news comes after station staff were devastated by the news earlier this month that beloved entertainment reporter Sam Rubin had died of a heart attack.
In a post to social media Ktla said Kriski’s stroke had happened earlier this week, but noted that “he’s in good spirits…and looks forward to being back with the team soon.”
The station also made a brief announcement on air about his condition.
Kriski’s wife told TMZ that he had the stroke early Monday and was hospitalized.
He joined the Ktla Morning News in 1991 and, according to his official bio, is “one of the last-remaining original ‘characters’ from the show’s inception.” He is a nine-time Emmy winner, has appeared as a...

Eponymous hero tackles a pooch-pinching operation by getting captured in this old-fashioned production
In some ways, the Lassie films are like the canine answer to the James Bond series. Both have literary antecedents, both have been big screen successes for MGM, and the basic formula remains essentially the same: a hero saves the day. The equivalent of Sean Connery is probably Pal, the rough collie dog who portrayed Lassie in seven feature films in the 1940s and 1950s. In Lassie: A New Adventure, Lassie is played by Bandit, who brings what is needed to the role, in a slick, handsome, functional way that suggests the Lassie franchise is perhaps in its Pierce Brosnan era, though unfortunately more Die Another Day doldrums than GoldenEye high point.
It bears mentioning at this point that the film is more properly titled Lassie – Ein Neues Abenteuer; this is a German production which has...

The hit game Palworld was a tremendous success for Pocketpair; the game has a record-breaking concurrent player number on Steam. This title, with similar mechanics as the Pokémon franchise but with very different ones, has proven to be a very good contender to the Nintendo saga.
The studio behind Palworld has already confirmed a roadmap for the future of the game. New areas to explore, PvP battles, Raids, and much more. Now, according to Reddit, new Pals are coming to the game.

The Academy Awards grew up at the 16th annual ceremony March 2, 1944. Since the first Oscar ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Blossom Room in 1929, the Academy Awards were small banquet ceremonies for La La Land movers and shakers. But that all changed 80 years ago. World War II was in its third year and movies meant more than ever to war-weary audiences.
So, the Oscars moved to the then-Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and bleachers were introduced giving fans a chance to see their favorites walk the red carpet. And instead of a select industry audience, attendees included members of all branches of the armed services many of whom sat in bleachers on the stage at the Chinese. The ceremony was heard locally on Kfwb; Jack Benny hosted the international broadcast for the troops on CBS Radio via shortwave. And for the first time, supporting performers finally received a full-size Academy Award.

Palworld, an action-adventure video game by Japanese developer Pocket Pair, debuted via Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview on Jan. 19. In just three days, five million copies sold, making it the top-selling and most-played game on the Steam charts, with players describing it as addictive fun: “Tried it for a couple of hours at 9pm, had some fun, it was then 3am,” reported one satisfied redditor who downloaded the game.
But that customer’s description of the game itself hinted at a point of controversy that has complicated the lightning-in-a-bottle success of Palworld.

Ed Sheeran is a lightweight when it comes to marijuana, which he related in a new interview with the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast when he revealed he once got high with Snoop Dogg after a concert — very high.
As Sheeran recalled, he and wife Cherry Seaborn were joined by her mother to take in Snoop’s show in Melbourne, Australia, where they met the rap icon backstage.
“I just remember looking at him and being like, ‘I can’t see right now.'”
“I remember him meeting my mother-in-law, and he was like, ‘What’s up, queen?’” Sheeran said, as reported by People.

For his eighth studio album, Autumn Variations, Ed Sheeran decided to shake things up. Rather than utilizing the power of a major label (his previous albums were released on Atlantic), he’s released his latest LP independently on his own label, Gingerbread Man Records.
The British singer-songwriter sat down for an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, and explained why.
“You have to be like, ‘I don’t care what people think.’”
“Each record before I’ve done, like, all the big going in and doing all these radio interviews, and going on the late-night shows, and doing, doing all this stuff,” Sheeran said.

Bhilai, Aug 21(Ians) A team of researchers from the Indian Institutes of Technology (Iit) Bhilai has successfully engineered a novel hydrogel-based insulin-delivery platform, which can help patients with Type-1 diabetes better manage their conditions.
Currently, an estimated three million people in India rely on insulin therapy, where they often resort to daily insulin injections using needles or specialised devices to manage their blood sugar levels.
The hydrogel-based drug delivery system has the ability to release insulin in a controlled manner in response to elevated blood glucose levels- mimicking the natural insulin secretion process of healthy pancreatic cells.
“Current insulin injection methods have some limitations. They do not work quite like the body’s natural system and can be fatal. The current insulin injection methods can also make blood sugar levels drop dangerously low, and patients might have to rely on them forever,” said Dr Suchetan Pal, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry,...

Science fiction on film has been around almost as long as cinema itself. Starting in 1895 when the first public showings of motion pictures commenced in France and the United States, and as filmmakers began to realize that they could string scenes together to tell a complete, coherent story, the genres of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy were part of the equation.
Celluloid offered ambitious storytellers the chance to put images on the screen—crude at the time, but still groundbreaking—that had only been glimpsed in the pages of novels, short stories, and later, comic books and pulp magazines. And as filmmaking techniques themselves progressed, and the motion picture industry began to take shape in the early 20th century, visionaries came along with audacious ideas that moved the art form, the technology, and the genres forward well into the new millennium.

The cinema of science fiction began to mature in the 1950s, concurrent with the arrival of the Cold War and the Atomic Age, as well as the growing sophistication of the literature. But it was during the 1960s that the genre really began to expand in different directions, still heavily influenced by the ideological paranoia and existential dread of the previous decade, but finding even more distinctive expressions of it.
At the same time, the 1960s was also the decade in which sci-fi movies truly started to become event films, not just B-movies and drive-in fodder, as evidenced by the likes of landmarks like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Planet of the Apes, both released in 1968. There were other successes as well, some of them on our list below, but a lot of remarkable sci-fi films of the era did not initially score with critics, audiences, or either. Yet nuclear terror,...

As talks between the actors union and the studios come to down to the final days before the extension of SAG-AFTRA’s current contract expires, artificial intelligence has become a significant obstacle to any deal.
“There seems to be no real negotiations here,” a SAG-AFTRA member close to talks tells Deadline on AI talks with the AMPTP. “Actors see Black Mirror’s ‘Joan Is Awful’ as a documentary of the future, with their likenesses sold off and used any way producers and studios want.” The union member is referring to the opening episode of the latest season of the Charlie Brooker-created satire starring Salma Hayek and Annie Murphy. “We want a solid pathway. The studios countered with ‘trust us’ – we don’t.”

Exclusive: After getting flamed by writers on social media for posting about being on the set of American Horror Story while striking WGA writers were outside picketing, Kim Kardashian’s at it again.
While all Hollywood has been hanging on with worry about the potential SAG-AFTRA strike, Kardashian posted a pic with the guild’s president Fran Drescher for a Dolce & Gabbana show, mugging for the cameras in Puglia, Italy. See it below.
Kardashian posted the photo on her Instagram Stories thread, and while Kardashian makes her coin by living life in a fishbowl, many in town think that the optics here look terrible for Drescher, whom many figured would have been sweating at the negotiating table in hopes that a deal might prevent many from potentially losing their homes if the business shuts down. Drescher, who chairs the guild’s negotiating committee, is returning to L.A.

The modern era of comics is built for short attention spans, all miniseries and limited runs and hot new creators, emphasizing new “jump-on issues” and trying to ignore that vastly more people are jumping off, every chance they get.
Some of that is effect, some of it is cause; it’s been a spiral since the ’90s crash fatally injured the viability of the long-running series. Frankly, long series always tended to dip and (if they were lucky) rise over time – it’s just the “rise,” unpredictable as it used it be, got eliminated from those calculations forever sometime in the early Aughts. [1]
So a comic that’s published anything like regularly doesn’t look regular. There’s this twelve-issue series and that thrilling relaunch and the other one-shot tying into something else. And each one of those “new” things has to be new enough for the fabled “new reader” to start there,...

This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" season 3, episode 3, "The Convert."
"Star Wars" can't help but serve as a mirror for the world. Sometimes it's deliberate, like when George Lucas wrote "A New Hope" as a response to Richard Nixon's presidency and the Vietnam War. Other times, a galaxy far, far away is ahead of the curve, like when Lucas was writing his prequel trilogy about the rise of the Galactic Empire, unaware that 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Patriot Act were all right around the corner.
More recently, the Disney+ TV shows "Andor" and "The Bad Batch" have picked up the baton, drawing clear parallels between life under the Empire and neofascism in the 21st century. By comparison, "The Mandalorian" takes place five years after the Empire's fall and examines how societies rebuild themselves in the aftermath of war. In the season 3 premiere, we saw that the...

Kolkata, Dec 18 (Ians) The seventh edition of the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K saw winners Leonard Barsoton and Desi Jisa in the men’s and women’s elite international category respectively rewrite the record books on a nippy Sunday morning that saw over 15,000 running enthusiasts put their best foot forward literally.
Kenya’s Barsoton defended his Tsk 25K title in style as he betted his own course record of 1:13.05 he set in 2019. Barsoton, the 2017 world cross-country silver medalist, finished in 1.12.49.
In the mix right from the beginning, but not in the lead pack, Barsoton was behind Alfred Ngeno, Abdisa Tola and Berhanu Legese. He picked up pace after the 20 km mark and never looked back.
“I know the course and I knew exactly when to pick up the pace. I started picking up the pace from 20.06 km. The last stretch is flat,” said Barsoton, who will take home a Usd...

A second Blu-ray disc of When Worlds Collide ’51 is too good to be called a bonus extra: this edition looks better than anything seen since original Technicolor prints. In one show we endure scurvy invaders from The Red Planet; in the other a rogue Astral Body threatens Earth with obliteration, necessitating escape on a space ship. Russell, a Best Director Oscar nominee for the surprisingly successful boxing drama The Fighter, makes both a fashion and a facial statement upon his arrival with guests at the 2011 Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. This was his first Best Director nomination. About five years ago, David O. Russell made headlines thanks to leaked videos showing him having a volcanic, expletive-filled confrontation with Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees – an ambitious all-star comedy that turned out to be much less successful than the bizarre behind-the-scenes video clips. (Check out Paul Rudd in a parody of the 'I Heart Huckabees' blow-up.) Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees alumnus Mark Wahlberg has said that he had to fight with Paramount...

If you’ve seen Gwyneth Paltrow’s brain dissected in Contagion, you know that Steven Soderbergh is willing to portray stars in a less than glamorous light. But in an interview with The Independent, the Oscar-winning director of Traffic and Haywire practically exuded blood lust for A-listers. Don’t worry, though: It’s all in the name of art!
“It’s always good to kill movie stars,” Soderbergh told the British newspaper. “I think that the two most important things that have happened to that aspect of movies in the last 50 years are Hitchcock killing off Janet Leigh in a...

National Velvet

'A most exciting and engaging film'
"National Velvet," the Technicolor film of Enid Bagnold's story about the butcher's daughter who won the Grand National, asks for a suspension of disbelief, but, admitting the fairy tale element, it makes a most exciting and engaging film, and the basic improbability is no bar to the enjoyment of the story. There is naturally something fresh, and unusual about the plot and its setting, and if the Brown household and the village they live in seem almost too delightful to be true, there can be no doubt that many of the country and seashore scenes where Velvet trains the Pie horse are: lovely-to look at.
