The directors of an eclectic array of six short films gathered earlier this month at The Landmark in Los Angeles for TheWrap and Shorts.TV‘s Short Film Showcase, where the filmmakers discussed their inspirations and the challenges behind their work. Joining TheWrap’s awards editor Steve Pond for a Q&a panel were filmmakers Chris McCaleb (“15 Minutes at 400 Degrees”), Bonnie-Kathleen Ryan (“Real.Live.Girl.”), Jeremy Merrifield (“Balloon”), Asher Jelinsky (“Miller & Son”), Pete Browngardt (“Curse of the Monkeybird: A Looney Tunes Cartoon”), and Mohammad Gorjestani (“Exit 12”). The panel followed a screening of the shorts introduced by Linda Olszewski, vice president of global acquisitions for Shorts.TV, which sponsored the showcase with TheWrap. Watch the full video above.

Cyrus and Jeff, Who Lives At Home filmmaker Mark Duplass will return to South by Southwest to keynote the 2015 edition of the annual Austin film conference, organizers announced today. Like 2014’s popular keynote speaker Lena Dunham, Duplass is making a homecoming of sorts to SXSW where he launched his career in 2005 by winning the SXSW Audience Award with brother Jay for The Puffy Chair. Last year at SXSW he and director/co-writer/co-star Patrick Brice debuted their microbudget horror Creep which Radius-twc and Blumhouse Tilt jointly acquired.
Also stopping by the Austin fest held from March 13-21, 2015 will be Bollywood actor and director Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth, The Four Feathers), who will lead a Conversation session. Over 150 keynotes, conversations, panels, and mentor sessions are in the works for the annual confab, which has yet to announce its full lineup.

Last summer in L.A. the Sundance Institute presented their first-ever ShortsLab, a day-long workshop for short filmmakers. The success of the event has led the Institute to expand ShortsLab to three cities this year with the first being Chicago on May 7 (NYC will happen on July 9 and L.A. Aug. 6).
The Chicago workshop will include seminars, screenings and panels that focus on story, production and distribution. There will also be a panel dedicated to short film programmers, as they’ll talk candidly about what films they’re looking for and give tips on how to get your short noticed.
Some of the names scheduled to attend: Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, Get Low director Aaron Schneider, director and Chicago native Kyle Henry, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler, Shorts International co-head of global acquisitions Linda Olszewski and Sundance shorts programmer Todd Luoto.
Tickets are $150 and available here.
